Robbie Prokop 7:12:15 PM
Hello Mr. Grant ! Hey, another shout out to your musical selective nous... LOVED your pseudo (?) electronica selections last week; then your return to some of the base late 70's/80's beats you drive. You do have - for my tastes - one of the most eclectic and solid background / affinities to music I know. I'm fully ok with saying it's bc your choices resonate with my own so much, but MAN. LOVE your show (my wife too !). If 'Space Age Love Song' is one of (if not the) #1 YouTube algorithms...
Robbie Prokop 7:13:22 PM
...that album is the BEST by FOS imho. I also love DuranDuran's PE, though I am torn if I think that was their best album...
Robbie Prokop 7:13:31 PM
Thanks, sir.
Robbie Prokop 7:15:29 PM
You mentioned something last year about Dale Bozzio's work beyond M.P.'s... can't recall...?
Grant Olsen (host) 7:25:31 PM
Robbie: Thanks so much for listening and the conversation! To me, the first two AFOS records are both so special, though I personally spend more time with LISTEN. Hard to pick a favorite Duran Duran for me, because they really spread out over their first few years together. I don't recall much about Dale Bozzio post Missing Persons, except for a couple of sad semi-scandals, but I'll see if I can remember what you're asking about
Grant Olsen (host) 7:27:18 PM
And keep listening tonight! It's all hits, some smaller than others, but all sequenced in a fun way that I hope illuminates the strengths of songs that have may have lost their luster just by being selected and played randomly next to whatever by some algorithm
Robbie Prokop 7:35:49 PM
Thank you Grant. I was never under the impression Planet Earth was a hit.??? Trust your knowledge there. I always thought Girls on Film had the greater air time, but at my age, memory is. . . well. I did really like Careless Memories too. Since they released that in my transition to college from HS, I got hooked into Rio - but that was the industrial radio machine impact (even though I was a college radio fan early on). Yea, the MP's link - you had mentioned that Dale later went on to play...
Robbie Prokop 7:37:37 PM
...for another band? Am I making that up?? I'm seeing your thread a bit now. Joe Jackson Steppin out, McCartney's solo work, Bowie's most commercial album... Sade though? I know that album had a lot of commercial success... LIke it all ! Thanks !
Grant Olsen (host) 7:43:44 PM
Planet Earth was definitely minor in comparison to some of their bigger hits, but tonight was more about balancing the super familiar with the slightly more obscure, trying to find a path through these songs to give them all the best chance to feel familiar and welcome in listeners' homes.
Robbie Prokop 7:44:03 PM
I know this is random firing, so just say if it's too much, but, are you familiar with the House Martins? London O Hull... Their sound and arrangement have seem to parallel the Jo Boxers sound...
Grant Olsen (host) 7:45:15 PM
I am familiar and thought about bringing them into tonight, but nothing quite stuck. I hear exactly what you're saying, they feel like a hybrid of this mid-80s British semi-Motown revival and The Smiths to me, and I love it
Robbie Prokop 7:45:17 PM
Hmmm... ok. That 'thread' - balane recognizable 'sounds' with known quantities... maybe just repeating you. But, yeah. I get it.
Robbie Prokop 7:46:30 PM
Jo Boxers and House Martins... semi-motown... any hook into the ska sound?
Robbie Prokop 7:47:44 PM
And here you play it... FYC... I thought I read in the past year (two?) that FYC's/English Beat's Rankin' Roger passed?
Grant Olsen (host) 7:47:58 PM
I think the ska thread comes from the evolution of bands like The Specials, Madness, and in the case of what's playing right now, The English Beat, all evolving to incorporate more of that motown feel as they progressed
Robbie Prokop 7:56:03 PM
Lost Mark Hollis too early - I'm not familiar with whether he was still actively creating music, but... bummer. Any Midge Ure on tap tonight? Again, feel free to say, "enough ".
Grant Olsen (host) 7:58:27 PM
hahaha, you're great! I enjoy the conversation
Grant Olsen (host) 7:59:21 PM
No Midge Ure tonight, but I can solve that at some point soon. Did you ever see the Prince's Trust concert where the band was Pete Townshend, Midge Ure, Mick Karn, and Phil Collins? It's amazing and crazy
Robbie Prokop 8:06:08 PM
Uhhhh. . . I just learned something new, thanks! I'd never heard of the Prince's Trust concert...but that line-up, WOWza... That's a heavy, heavy studded cast... Kinda cool that Japan's bassist would have played with the other three... That's a cool connection in my mind. With three musicians more well known and then a more 'obscure' player (maybe only in U.S. terms, not U.K.?).
Grant Olsen (host) 8:08:21 PM
All four of them seem so distinct from one another, but Mick Karn definitely acquits himself quite well, and he's unapologetically super weird during the whole set!
Robbie Prokop 8:19:22 PM
Yes - agreed with distinct - all three. I just looked & found a video of "Let my Love" from that concert. You aren't kidding about Karn ! :] His riffs for that song sound pretty different from what Japan's bass lines seemed like, but that's getting in a bit over my head. I saw Phil Collins (online) last year and was devastated to see how his health has detiorated - I'm grateful for all his gifts to music, for sure ! Speaking of unapologetically weird, I'm believing you've seen early Genesis...
Robbie Prokop 8:19:55 PM
...and PG. I love Phil's energy then, too.
Robbie Prokop 8:21:33 PM
Morris Day ! Loved his sound and his arrangements/choreography always made me laugh ... or feel 'happy'...
Grant Olsen (host) 8:24:33 PM
That version of Let My Love Open The Door is so wild! And Peter Gabriel has a wonderful weird side that has served him well for his whole musical career
Grant Olsen (host) 8:25:27 PM
As for Morris Day, if he brings you joy, then give his interview on Questlove's podcast a listen if you have time. Oh man, the behind the scenes of Prince and The Revolution and The Time are just unbelievable
Robbie Prokop 9:07:00 PM
Here's a stream; buckle up.
Robbie Prokop 9:09:54 PM
Thomas Dolby's 'Hyperactive' and Pointer Sisters' 'Automatic' - I FELT the connection - the link - if you were making one. There's that brassy/horn underly on both pieces ... You do know Dolby's at Johns Hopkins University... Forever, I think. I wonder how many people would guess that if you asked... THAT's a creative brain - FOR sure. Grandfather of steam punk ? ? So, I was gonna sign out and thank you; got some World Cup catch up to do, but then you dump STAN RIDGEWAY on... Wow. You got...
Robbie Prokop 9:10:23 PM
...the touch, Grant. Well played and again, thank you. Have a brilliant week.
Robbie Prokop 9:18:02 PM
Ok, I lied. Last thought. As you run Colin Hays, I'm reminded of that elusive (for me) juxtaposition of artists, their music, and time... I've seen a few vids of his continuing work and. . . not that you EXPect evocations to remain the same, but it really paints the picture of how certain sounds strike us at certain times in our lives - and likely do similarly for the artists creating the sounds. Haircut 100 ?? Come on... Ciao for real this time.
Grant Olsen (host) 9:22:36 PM
Thanks for the careful listening, and I'm glad you pick up on sequencing decisions!
Grant Olsen (host) 9:23:03 PM
And enjoy catching up on world cup! Crossing my fingers for Ghana
Robbie Prokop 9:30:14 PM
Here's an original TT's 'septet' ...

Robbie Prokop 9:30:47 PM
I like Ghana's chances against Uruguay...definitely have a chance.
Grant Olsen (host) 9:35:52 PM
Those videos are so good! I love that version of the band
Grant Olsen (host) 9:36:21 PM
And I'll never forgive Uruguay for Suarez's handball against Ghana, so I'm hoping for revenge
Doug McRoberts 9:47:35 PM
Thanks for the fun roadtrip through high school tonight.
