In short, an avid 80's/90's indie music fan who enjoys filling in gaps as well as making new discoveries.
How did this obsession of music begin?
Raised on Top 40 Radio during long family car trips and K-Tel Records at Christmas, my own musical journey begins with new wave and post-punk, and then the compulsive building of my collection at the dawn of the CD age (circa 1983). As a result, I compiled many of the original import CD's from Brian Eno et al (Harold Budd, Michael Brook, Jon Hassell), Felt, 70's Bowie, The Chameleons, 4AD, Factory (New Order and unknowns The Wake, A Certain Ratio, Section 25), and Creation Records (before and up to Oasis), etc.

Voices Lost in the Mix
Many music lovers know of the 'Madchester' sound of the late 80's, early 90's courtesy of The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, and Inspiral Carpets. But few know of the darker side of Manchester House in the form of the band New Fast Automatic Daffodils. This week's The Misery of Cities opens with a track of The New Fads' second album 'Body Exit Mind'. And so begins another hour of lesser known music from the 80s and 90s, from bands on both sides of the Atlantic: The Asteroid #4, He Said, Savage Republic. As well as some lesser known tracks from more familiar cult bands Gang of Four and Spacemen 3.

From Laserdisc to Your Radio
One of the rarer songs from the vast Cabaret Voltaire catalog of work, a song originally recorded for a video in 1985 and never released onto vinyl or CD - until 1992, opens up this week's The Misery of Cities. Other rarities from Levellers 5 (covering the Beatles' 'Eleanor Rigby'), The Ocean Blue, Q65, as well as deep cuts from Roxy Music and The Sex Pistols. Get your lost, forgotten, lesser-known music fix from The Misery of Cities.

Comprising Sugar
Deep cuts from Love and Rockets and The Magnetic Fields bookend tracks from lesser known artists The Television Personalities and Lanterna on this week's The Misery of Cities. A look at how Bob Mould created Sugar, with tracks from the bands from where each member came from.. Some fun along the way courtesy of Adrian Belew's 'Big Electric Cat' from 1982 and Mojave 3 from 2003 make this week's show a must listen...

Mostly on the other side of the Atlantic this week's The Misery of Cities takes us this week. Manchester's Section 25 open the show, one of Factory Records' lesser known original signings. While two of Creation Records' lesser signings of its early years close out the hour (Jasmine MInks, The Weather Prophets). In between the usual mix of lost, forgotten, lesser known music that is on the airwaves once again.

Beneath the City of Hedonistic Bohemians
The title of this week's episode gets its namesake from the opening song from one of the best least-known bands of the early 80s LA underground - Abecedarians. RIsing in the same club ranks as fellow bands out of the city of angels (Jane's Addiction, Guns N' Roses), Abecedarians did not get the same breaks and therefore are not as well known today. But their legacy continues, in not just the name of this radio show, but also with this scorcher demo version of what would eventually appear on their 1986 debut 'Eureka'. Boston's Til Tuesday's lesser known 2nd album gets some attention, as does some solo work from former Wall of Voodoo lead vocalist Stan Ridgway and Spirea X A rare treat on this week's show in the first-time unearthing of the 1997 collaboration between Stereolab and Nurse With Wound, the 10-minute trance-trip 'Stereo Headphone Mind'. Plenty more lost, forgotten, lesser known music fill out a very robust hour that will only whet your appetite for more...

The Audience and Those Who Sail in It
Two post-punk bands celebrate their audiences (Bauhaus, XTC), while Steve Jones takes over (some) vocal duties on the Sex Pistols' soundtrack 'The Great Rock and Roll Swindle'. NYC has two bands on this week's show: Thick Pigeon, who recorded for the Les Disques du Crepuscule and Factory labels in the early 80's, and Apollo Heights, formed by three members of The Veldt, and update their 90's soulful shoegaze sound with a new funk ethereal shoegaze sound for the 21st century. Boston's own Galaxie 500 with an alternate version of a beloved first album track, and a bit of Boston Music Television history with one of the first videos played on V66 in February 1985, courtesy of Supertramp's former lead singer. A band that sounds like The Smashing Pumpkins but recorded just one album in 1996 - Catherine - is featured with a track featuring vocals by the Pumpkins' D'arcy. One-hit wonders from Detroit's Gallery and Sydney's Single Gun Theory, and deep cuts from Red House Painters and Red Krayola round out the hour.

Computers Infect the Hotels
This week's The Misery of Cities covers the years 1966 - with a deep cut from Love's debut album - to 2010 (Brooklyn's The National), with a sentimental revisit to June 6, 1978 when The Cars' debut album was released (RIP Ric Ocasek). Rarities this week include a shelved song by The House of Love's record label, an experimental space rock collaboration between Stereolab and Nurse With Wound, as well as a hidden track from R.E.M.'s fourth album. Long lost tracks from funksters The Nite-Liters and bitter songs about England courtesy of The Fall and Roy Montgomery round out the hour on Boston's own nostalgic radio music show.

Like the Wind at the End of the Street
This week's unearthed bands include Swervedriver's debut (released in 1991 between Ride and My Bloody Valentine albums), 60's garage bands The Monks and Beaux Jens, as well as classic, albeit lesser-known dark electronica courtesy of Fad Gadget and Chris & Cosey. Also, return to 80's college radio with hidden gems from My Dad Is Dead and The Feelies - all on this week's The Misery of Cities, Boston's own out-of-print music show.

The K-Tel Records Show (The 1970's Roots of The Misery of Cities)
The Misery of Cities goes back to its roots on this week's show. K-Tel Records were called 'the Spotify of the 1970s' by Forbes magazine because of how K-Tel introduced new music to record buyers through many classic '20 Original Hits by the Original Stars' compilations. This week's show spotlights 15 songs from 1971 to 1979, some familiar, some lesser-known, and most considered 'one-hit wonders'. Whether you remember K-Tel Records or are a fan of songs of Top 40 Radio, you're sure to enjoy this groovy trip back to the 1970s.

Irreverance
This week's lost, forgotten, lesser-known music show The Misery of Cities spans the years 1968 to 2019 with a wide range of artists from New Zealand (The Clean), England (Lucid Dream, The Adult Net), and Livonia, Michigan (His Name Is Alive), as well as two of Boston's own (Jonathan Richman, Dumptruck). Obscurities from Jefferson Airplane, Elf Power, and British producer Craig Leon, as well as the single from A Flock of Seagulls before 'I Ran' became their signature song, round out the sonically-packed hour.

Are You Receiving
Music fads come and go. This week's The Misery of Cities re-visits new wave music of the late 70's and early 80's (The Associates, The Cars, Japan), as well as college radio acts who broke through, albeit briefly, in the mid-80's (The Church, Love and Rockets). The 90's are represented by indie artists Neutral Milk Hotel and Slipstream, which was part of the Spacemen 3 family tree, as well as another band featured on this week's show, Lupine Howl. Whether re-visiting or discovering this lost music for the first time, tune in for some great music from yesteryear.

No Way Out But Forward Go
The music twists and turns in a variety of directions on this week's The Misery of Cities. Spacemen 3 starts things off before a lengthy stop in the 90s with a variety of genres and lesser-known bands (Hooverphonic, Shonen Knife, Death In Vegas, and Air Miami). A 1977 track by John Cooper Clarke produced by the legendary Martin Hannett before the formation of Factory Records, bands signed onto the Sire label who found commercial success (The Replacements), and those who didn't (Throwing Muses, The Ocean Blue), as well as 80's unknowns Microdisney and The Golden Palominos round out the hour. Lost, forgotten music returns to the airwaves every Wednesday night from 8 to 9 PM.

The Hiatus
Bands who took some time off, whether by choice or not, are the focus of this week's episode of The Misery of Cities. The show start off with the return of Utravox, with a new lead singer, after a three-year hiatus, followed by Television's 1992 return (after 14 years). Other reasons for the band's hiatus are the demise of their label, as was the case for New Order and A.R. Kane. A new sound after a period of time away from each other brings sonic changes for Wire in the 80's and Roxy Music in the 70's. And The Cure return from a self-imposed two year hiatus with a new upbeat approach, while Kraftwerk return with a re-mix after five years of studio silence. Check out the first releases after a band's lengthy hiatus on this week's The Misery of Cities.

Seeping From Soil
Rare, unique recordings from 1969 to 2013 on this week's The Misery of Cities, starting with Snapper, formed by Peter Gutteridge, formerly of The Chills and The Clean. Lesser-known music from The Hairem (before they became She in 1970); the 'Remix' version of Wall of Voodoo's cover of Johnny Cash's 'Ring of Fire', a bonus track from the US pressing of Slowdive's second release, and two abstract pieces from Canada's The Tape-Beatles are just a sampling of the relics on this week's show.
