Winter Light / Summer Heat
- Every week on Wed at 6:00 PM
Multi-Genre Music
With Patrick Green Beans
Winter Light / Summer Heat is a weekly radio music program that features popular old favorites and lesser-known tunes that focus on themes of exploration, nostalgia, mythology, politics, history, existentialism, death, wanderlust and spirituality, or maybe it's just a bunch of songs in a row, brought to the listener through a vehicle of folk and psychedelic music.
The focus of Winter Light / Summer Heat is psychedelic rock, contemporary folk and their sub-genres (acid rock, psych, space rock, garage, jam band, krautrock, psychedelic pop, psychedelic soul, psychedelic folk, p-funk, Canterbury scene, freak, beat, folk rock, progressive folk, folk baroque, folk pop, chamber folk etc...), but the program also dips into world, exotica, funk, rock, singer-songwriter, pop and soundtrack music.
"Psychedelic rock is a style of Rock music which emerged in the mid-1960s that often attempts to emulate or enhance the way music sounds while under the influence of psychedelic drugs. Songs typically include heavily distorted and reverbed electric guitars, extended instrumental segments (especially guitar solos), augmented vocals, and drug-influenced lyrics. Other common characteristics include use of keyboards and elaborate studio effects like backwards recording. It is also not uncommon for psychedelic rock groups to incorporate prominent elements of other genres including Folk, Blues, Jazz, and South Asian Music." - from RateYourMusic.com

The return. I've taken a few months off from the show due to business in my other life and general burnt-out-ness. But now I'm doing another new episode after those lovely reruns. This episode had a working title of 'More Good Folk Crazier" which means I had a playlist pool I already used called "Good Folk", plus I needed to distinguish these folks songs as being wilder compared the more tame and usual folk songs. This playlist dips heavily into world music and goes after high energy beats. Sometimes frantic, sometimes mesmerizing, often catchy, here are some folk songs that are crazier.

Two hours of super psychedelic tracks. This program plays a lot of psychedelic music, but every once in a while I breakout songs that are a notch above the run of the mill trippy, mind-expanding rock. These are some of the trippiest and mind-expandingest tracks to come out of the genre. Prepare for a cacophony of exotic instruments, innovative tape effects, more droning than you'd expect and backwards music galore.
33 different acts in this show, here's some information about some of them:
The 4 Seasons:
The Four Seasons saw themselves slipping out of the charts and decided it was time to seriously take a new direction which would follow the current trend in pop music. They saw that ambitious albums like Sgt. Pepper's were doing well so they called in Jake Holmes, probably best known for his song Dazed and Confused, to collaborate and created 'The Genuine Imitation Life Gazette', a satirical concept album about life in American during the 1960's. The design of the album art is of a newspaper, a design that would inspired other album art such as Jethro Tull's Thick as A Brick and John Lennon's Some Time in New York City. Unfortunately the decision to change with the times did not garner the band much commercial success, as they alienated their existing fans who were expecting pop songs about love and did not appeal to new fans who already saw the band as irrelevant at the time. Bob Gaudio, keyboardist and songwriter for the 4 Seasons said this about the album: “One of the disappointments of our career for me on a creative level was the Genuine Imitation Life Gazette album. It was just something that I had to do at that time. It got wonderful reviews, but obviously it was not an acceptable piece from us. Everybody was expecting Top 40.”
The Twilights:
The Twilights formed in Adelaide in 1964 and started out their career by mostly playing covers. In 1966, they entered Hoadley's Battle of the Sounds and won the competition against the 500 plus other groups. Their prize was a cruise to the UK, and they took advantage playing at the Cavern Club, recording at Abbey Road Studios with Norman "Hurricane" Smith (who also worked on Pink Floyd's 'Piper At The Gates Of Dawn', The Pretty Things 'S.F. Sorrow' as well as many early Beatles tracks) and sitting in on The Beatles recording 'Penny Lane'. Things seemed promising but the didn't achieve the chart success in the UK they were hoping for. They were booked to appear on Top Of The Pops, but unfortunately they were already on the boat headed home. The group added much to their repertoire from what they observed in England and were playing the entirety of the Sgt. Pepper's album in their live shows, before the record had even been released in Australia. Their most famous single 'Cathy Come Home', which featured George Harrison inspired sitar, brought them the attention of a television network interested in doing a Monkees style sit-com involving The Twilights. The series wouldn't come to be but the songs written for the show would be released in their album 'Once Upon A Twilight...", considered one of the top Australian pop albums of the 1960's.

Fairfield Parlour:
Fairfield Parlour came into being in 1969, but the only thing new was the name, the band had existed prior under the name Kaleidoscope. The name change was part of a new musical direction and overall difficulty finding initial success, reportedly the group wasn't worried about alienating fans because they weren't sure they had any. Kaleidoscope released two albums and added a third with Fairfield Parlour's "Far From Home", it included two songs that were outtakes from Kaleidoscope sessions. Lyricist Peter Daltrey has said the song "Aries" is mostly autobiographical, about characters and places from his childhood.

[Excuse the poor vocal quality]
Two hours of randomly (sort of) selected tunes. While making episodes of Winter Light / Summer Heat I come across tons of songs that I think would be good to play on the air but do not fit in to a playlist I am currently working on. When this happens I file them away into miscellaneous playlists, one for psychedelic songs and one for folk, believing that some day I will return to them and incorporate them into a new playlist. These songs then exist in playlist limbo, some move on to be played on air, some are ultimately decided not good enough for air, and the majority just sit there for a long time. For this playlist I tried to exhume some songs from the psychedelic playlist by hitting the shuffle button and then sitting back and listening. Ones I heard and thought they were too good to not ever play, I stuck into this episode, once I had two hours worth of such songs I stopped. Who knows what else is lurking in that playlist currently brimming with over 400 songs and nearly 24 hours worth of tune-ary.
39 different acts in this show, here's some information about some of them:
Sixto Rodriguez:
Rodriguez remained a relatively obscure Detroit musician in the United States until the 2012 film Searching For Sugar Man was released, a film about his giant fame in South Africa that Rodriguez knew nothing about. He released two albums and then was dropped from his label. His albums made an impact in apartied-torn South Africa, where his tunes were used as anti-aparthied anthems, his music was censored by the oppressive government and he was held in regard on even footing with Cat Stevens and Bob Dylan even going platinum and out selling Elvis. It wasn't until 1997 that he knew anything about this. His daughter found a website dedicated to Rodriegez, they contacted the website owners and learned about his fame. He then did a series of concerts there. The film Searching For Sugarman shed a light on this odd story and is how many American's became aware of Rodriguez's music.

[REBROADCAST] Psychedelic Guilt
In a Café by Edgar Degas, 1873. Image source
A new year begins and so does another semester of Winter Light / Summer Heat. Another year of your favorite weekly psychedelic and folk music radio program. Whenever this show is brought up, people latch on the psychedelic part, that seems to be the selling point. And I think it makes sense why. It is simply the more interesting bit. Folk music is still around, it will probably be around forever, it is one of the most enduring musical genres, it is something everyone knows even if they don't seek it out. But psychedelic music, although much newer than folk, is already a relic of the past. Some are making neo-psychedelic tunes, but it isn't the same music and it isn't that widespread. There was a time when everyone was making psychedelic influenced music because that sold records, it was groovy and totally far out, happenin' even. But now? Not so much. But back to the point, I play a lot of psych music, but also play a lot of folk and a lot of other stuff too. Like that Christmas music episode from two weeks ago. And every once in a while I am overcome with the feeling of what I'm calling 'Psychedelic Guilt'. I feel like I should be playing more psychedelic music, so that's what I'm doing tonight. Here's a bunch of psychedelic music, well mostly, for two hours. Psychedelic Guilt absolved... for now.

La Bonne Aventure by René Magritte, 1938. Image Source
Two hours of sleepy tunes, to put you to sleep. Go to bed.
30 different acts in this show, here's some information about some of them:
Paddy McAloo:
Paddy McAloon of the band Prefab Sprout was left housebound after going nearly blind, and to entertain himself he began listening to short wave radio, mostly late at night, and sourced material from documentaries, call in programs, chat shows and CD radio to use as a basis for the spoken word lyrics to the song I Trawl The MEGAHERTZ. McAloon found a lot of what he was recording boring, but by reorganizing, altering, combining, finishing and ultimately streamlining it he was able to make it more musical and enjoyable to listen to. Yvonne Connors, a commodities Broker, provides the vocals as McAloon felt his own voice wouldn't suit it, because of this he says he can actually stand listening to the album, unlike his others with him singing. An orchestral motif inspired by McAloon's favorite classical composers Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel accompanies the words.

[REBROADCAST] Losing Your Head With Holofernes
Judith aux portes de Béthulie by Jules-Claude Ziegler, 1847. Image source
This is the third Holiday season that Winter Light / Summer Heat has been around. The first time Christmas came around, I didn't feel like making a Christmas music program, at that time I didn't feel I could really add anything to the glut of Christmas saturated radio. Instead I thought that there are a million songs with religious themes and with religious holidays knocking on the door why not do a religious episode, I already had a mass of them building up and the timing felt right thus premiered The Four Truths. There was a second coming the next year with ...And The Fifth Horseman Is Fear. And now for the third year I present another spiritual episode.
I always gather an image for the episode and in the past I never chose a overtly religious one for my religious playlist, but this time, inspired by the first track in the program: John & Beverly Martyn's John The Baptist, I went looking for images from Bible stories such as the story of John the Baptist. Eventually I found myself admiring paintings depicting Judith and her encounter with Holofernes, a story I didn't remember hearing before. Bethulia, Judith's home, was under siege by the Assyrian general Holofernes. She tricks her way into Holofernes' tent by saying she has some information that will ensure him victory, he imbibes too much wine and Judith uses this opportunity to behead him, bring an end to the battle and sparing her city. Holofernes joins the ranks of the others beheaded in the Good Book, including Goliath, Ish-bosheth, King Saul, Sheba, Dagon, King Ahab's seventy sons, James and his brother John the Baptist. So try not to lose your head while listening to this episode spanning spiritual songs with no real comment but that religion is deeply ingrained in our culture and its themes are ripe in folk and psych music as it is with all genres.

[REBROADCAST] More From The Wonderful World Of The Industrial Musical
Coca-Cola advertisement by Haddon Sundblom, 1952. Image source
After what must have been an agonizing two years of waiting, I have returned with another episode that forgets the musical premise of Winter Light / Summer Heat and instead features songs from Industrial Musicals. A long awaited sequel to the episode The Wonderful World Of The Industrial Musical. What is an Industrial Musical, you ask? Well...
In a time of US history when domestic manufacturing was at its zenith, companies making these fine products for consumers all over the world treated themselves and their employees with shows revolving around the products they sold and the shared experiences within their businesses. The performances, sometimes as elaborate and expensive as Broadway productions, hired songwriters to create musicals to showcase their products (whether it be soda, silicone, air conditioners or paper cups), highlight a new focus or strategy or maybe just to boost employee morale which sometimes culminated in a full length spectacle that included talent that would go on to stardom. Bob Fosse, Chita Rivera, Martin Short, Florence Henderson, Sheldon Harnick, Jerry Bock, John Kander and Fred Ebb, among others all took a turn in the industrial circuit before making it big on the stage and screen. These shows were private affairs and the public has only recently been able to delight in this forgotten genre through the surfacing of rare souvenir records originally exclusively issued to salesmen and shareholders. Tracking down these elusive recordings has become the life goal of at least a handful of collectors.
Many shows featured in the last program return with more gems, but there a new shows that get a highlight including ones centered on products from Chrysler, Johnson & Johnson, York, Continental Assurance Co., Dominion Road Machinery, Westclox, IBM, Westinghouse and Massey-Ferguson.

Dear Darla, I Hate Your Stinking Guts. You Make Me Vomit. You're Scum Between My Toes. Love, Alfalfa
Valentine's Day is for all the lovers out there and all the monsters being friends with each other and keeping their evil in check, and they got a playlist just for them last week, but post Valentine's is for all those who have no love in their life at all, instead they have bitterness and hatred. I do an anti-love playlist every year and it is clearly the more fun of the two Valentines Day centric ones. My goal is to find the ones that are cruel, mean-spirited and extreme, but it seems to be harder and harder to find ones that purely meet that criteria, so I've had to add more and more unrequited and heartbroken songs to fill up the run time. But when I do include those water-down anti-love songs, I am still looking for the most devastating or goofy ones available. So here's some bitter songs for my bitter friend over there.

[REBROADCAST] The Wonderful World Of The Industrial Musical
Unable to post full description, refer to original posting: https://wbtvlp.creek.fm/broadcasts/2019
Two hours of the greatest radio you could ever ask to hear, which means only songs from industrial musicals.
In a time of US history when domestic manufacturing was at its zenith, companies making these fine products for consumers all over the world treated themselves and their employees with shows revolving around the products they sold and the shared experiences within their businesses. The Bathrooms Are Coming!:
Cult favorite and perhaps the greatest industrial musical (and maybe even the greatest musical period), The Bathrooms Are Coming! combines the glamour of Broadway theatrics with bathroom fixtures manufactured by American Standard. The story is as bizarre and delightful as the title promises. The Greek goddess Femma is enlisted by a group of modern women to usher in a bathroom revolution as explained in the first song "It's Revolution" which includes the immortal lines 'She's free, she's free/ from bathroom oppression she's free'. "My Bathroom" is an ode to what is seemingly boasted as the best room in the house, "Look At The Tub" is a lament from woman who has had enough with cramped, dangerous and overall substandard tubs, "Spectra 70" introduces the world to the endless features of this new shower including a shelf for cigarettes and martinis, which may or may not be a joke, I honestly don't know. Even harder to come by than the music is video of the performance, which could explain the interesting imagery adorning the record sleeve, such as caveman interacting with toilet, a hillbilly with a jug of moonshine and the flippantly blasphemous depiction of a monk in front of an outhouse door with 'John' written on it next to similar doors with the names of other saints.
That's Show Biz!:
My favorite production. This short record of only 5 tunes is all about Prime-Wrap, basically a butcher grade meat storage plastic wrap made by Goodyear. "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" writer Lee Pockriss composed this masterpiece, and who could expect any less. Closer "Welcome To Schultz's Market" allows each member of the five person cast to assume the role of a meat, including Rex Roast and Charlene Chicken. This four minute crazy pork chop opus contains bizarre digs at French president Charles De Gaulle, why did the chicken cross the road? humor, and an excruciating long build up to a ho

[REBROADCAST] Eine melodische Kanone schĂĽtzt uns
Zitherspieler mit Bierkanne by Ernst Immanuel MĂĽller, 1931. Image source
Two hours of German music, with a focus on early 70's Krautrock. Enjoy the often spacey, psychedelic, avant-garde, droning, experimentally electronic music coming from the people of a country trying to reforge its place in the world culturally.
18 different acts in this show, here's some information about some of them:
Kraftwerk:
Kraftwerk formed in DĂĽsseldorf in 1970 and embraced the thriving Krautrock scene in Germany. As their career progressed they began using exclusively electronic instruments and their repetitive, minimalist, robot-rock has influenced pretty much ever electronic and synthesizer based band (and arguably hip-hop group) to follow them. Their 1974 album "Autobahn" was giant leap for the electronic genre- full blown and marketable electronic music, as well as a big hit for German culture, it being the first German language hit in the USA. In 1977, the group released their sixth album, "Trans-Europe Express", which introduced the Synthanorma Sequenzer, allowing the band to make even more elaborate synthesizer lines. The album was meant to be a concept album with two concepts, a celebration of Europe and identity, namely differences between the actual and the image. In their search to emulate the actual Trans-Europe Express, "Kraftwerk went to railway bridges to listen to the sounds the train would actually produce. The group found the sound the train made was not danceable and changed it slightly."
Neu!:
Formed in 1971 in DĂĽsseldorf by Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother after leaving the Kraftwerk lineup. They chose the name Neu, as they felt it was "the strongest word in advertising". Despite this, their first album did not sell well. While recording their sophomore record "Neu! 2", the group ran out of money to finish the recording, so the second side consists of their single "Neuschnee/Super", as well as various remixes of it at different playback speeds or mangled in a cassette recorder. A conflicting version of the story reports that the band purposefully tried to aggravate their label in response to minimal promotion of that same single. For their final album (for a while at least) "Neu! '75", the two founders essentially contributed one side of the record each. With Rother making ambient tracks and Dinger creating more experimental rock-influenced songs.
Achim Reichel & Machines:
Achim Reichel, born in Hamburg in 1944, had been the guitarist and vocalist for the Beat bands The Rattles and Wonderland. He started a Krautrock project in 1971 called A.R. & Machines to experiment with his new new AKAI X-330D tape machine. With it he was able to produce loops, or echoes, of instruments all playing on top of each other. Due to his fame from his previous bands and the cheap production costs, Reichel was able to have his very experimental and non-traditional rock albums produced by a major label. While the debut album "The Green Journey", had trippy tunes mixed in with more pop-oriented songs, the second record "Echo" delves deep into surreal space rock soundscapery as evident by the 5 tracks spanning 80 minutes.
Countries represented: Germany, USA, Wales, England, South Africa.
