Growing up in Baltimore City, listening to my Dad play an old upright piano in our basement is what turned me on to all things music. It was his style of boogie woogie piano that is seared into my soul. That was the late 1960's. My Mom's love of Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and early rock-n-roll is also synonymous with the music playing in the background of my childhood. Fast forward to the early 1980's, and that's when I discovered Billie Holiday, some 40 years after her iconic song Strange Fruit was recorded. Billie Holiday changed it all for me. Of course there was the classic vinyl period, and trust me I still have my album collection and original stereo; but it was the blues that kept calling me. A big misconception about the blues is that its all about sorrow...."my man done left me for my best friend, my dog got bad sick and died, there's no money to pay the rent..." While this all may be true, the blues to me is about humanity, the human experience; and it's rooted in raw emotion. The blues allows us to find joy and feel peace in the midst of bad times. Being at peace is not walking around in a somber way - it's living in the midst of chaos and having peace in one's heart. This is why the blues speaks to my soul. It brings me great joy to share my album collection and digital library on WHCP radio in Cambridge MD. As I like to say ~ "Copacetic and Cosmetic - cuz when you feel good you look good" ~ and to me that's what the blues is all about. Hope you enjoy the show.
