Long before Mozart seized the title of “prolific musical genius who died young,” there was Henry Purcell (1659-1695). Arguably the greatest English composer before the twentieth century, Purcell wrote for the court, the stage, the drawing room, and everywhere in between. To mark the 325th anniversary of his death, WHRB will feature selections from Purcell’s magnificent catalogue, as well as tributes by those he influenced: John Blow, Oliver Knussen, Benjamin Britten, and others.
