Also, a big thank-you for this: For years, i've been trying to think of a phrase to describe the strong but nuanced and even classically-flavored harmonies of groups like the Association and the Mamas & Papas. there's this hobo graffiti guy, buzz blur, who draws a pipe guy and writes some kind of phrase on freight trains. one time i was in austin and i was reading a story about hobo graffiti in a zine and i saw a picture of his tag and it said "october in the railroad earth". then the car i i was in stopped at a train crossing and i saw that same tag on the train!

yeah honestly i love a lot of old timey minstrel music but i think it's just as well it's fallen out of favor and i won't play it on the radio. when people complain about certain songs getting "cancelled" i just tell them that you don't hear minstrel music on the radio anymore. cultural norms change.
