i once heard this nervous gender song on WPRB when i was in the car with my dad (back when i was still in high school, something like 15 years ago). and my dad HATED it.

Hi everyone, thanks for tuning in! Yes, this show was pre-recorded in my "home studio". I do take requests for future shows (though my next won't be for another two weeks).

There are a handful of DJs doing it live but I'm not one of them! (yet)

To be fair to my dad, we have a lot in common and he's given tons of money to WPRB over the years - he just really couldn't stand that one Nervous Gender song!

I think the title track from Smashing Pumpkins' Oceania ought to get airplay. I understand they may be too commercial, but want to say I have heard The Beatles on this station before.

Yay Monitor! They actally had Meat Puppets record a track on that album for them...they couldn't manage the noise they imagined for it.

Yes! That early version of the Meat Puppets was so wild.

And then somehow mutated into an accomplished country, jam, whatever they wanted band. Great show!

I saw “World Imitation Productions” as the label. The only other time I have seen that phrase is on the sleeve of the first Meat Puppets EP. I was wondering if there was a connection.

I also worked in record stores for several years. Tower Records, then Sound of Market. The pay was shit, but it was fun bullshitting about music all day long.

Bandcamp, definitely. We're discouraged from using Youtube (but that doesn't mean I haven't).

Sound of Market was my favorite record store! They had so much wild stuff on the 3rd level!

I remember Third Street Jazz & Rock. That place was a wonderland! I bought so many amazing records and CD from there.

That’s where I worked. Up on the third floor. I was there 1998-2000.

Ah, a little before my time then. I was there all the time in 2004/2005.

It was so much better just a bit before you came around. Our selection was nuts. They scaled back around the time I left. Nobody knew about that place. We had a bad location.

Which Tower did you work at?

Jerry Gordon, the owner of Third Street Jazz & Rock is the force behind the Serenade To A Cuckoo show.

The owners were this elderly immigrant couple. They did not like or know about music at all. The Beatles could have walked through the door and they would. not have know who they were. They could just as well have been selling socks for a living. It was astonishing. They stumbled onto a set of very knowledgeable and dedicated buyers.

Some of you here probably know this already, so apologies.

The whole store was great too. It wasn't just rock and jazz. We had a top notch selection of rap, 12” dance, and soul on the 2nd floor too.

I was still talking about Sound of Market.

To answer your question, I worked at the Tower on South Street.

You could not have guessed from street level that Sound of Market had so much great stuff. I can only imagine what it was like before I started going.

I never set foot in the place before I got hired there. I didn’t know it was there.

I did a ton of medical studies at TJU and would stop in at Sound of Market after every appointment to look through the bins. This is probably 2000 until they closed.

I used to take the train in from Jersey for weekend classes at Moore, and would always hit up Sound of Market afterwards.

After I quit Sound of Market, Drug studies was how I made ends meet for a good while.

Only people who were pumped full of drugs could appreciate these sounds.

Experimental drugs, at that!

There was a band from Philly that named themselves after a place that did skin studies. Ivy Labs. They were decent. Solid concept!

I love these chats: we've got an intersection of record store employees who also have done clinical studies.

I worked at Wild Mutation last year and Common Beat (the one on Baltimore Ave) for a little bit in 2018.

I heard Common Beat got looted two nights ago. It’s a shame.

There is a bunch of broken music shit I have been meaning to take down there to look into getting fixed.

I recommend them wholeheartedly. Good folks.
