good evening nerts!
ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ 8:06:29 PM
👻 BOO!
ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ 8:06:43 PM
did I scare you??
Dana K (host) 8:07:06 PM
oh no a ghost
ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ 8:07:14 PM
Greetings and Salutations!!
Dana K (host) 8:08:08 PM
hello and welcome!
Dana K (host) 8:10:22 PM
i once heard this nervous gender song on WPRB when i was in the car with my dad (back when i was still in high school, something like 15 years ago). and my dad HATED it.
ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ 8:11:19 PM
Music is Best when parental units Hate it!!
Christine Duffy 8:21:36 PM
I have to admit, I came here because of Nervous Gender too.
Christine Duffy 8:22:26 PM
Just want to say: never stop playing Nervous Gender, no matter the opinions of parental units!
Gary 8:22:42 PM
Are you taking requests, or is the show set in stone?
Christine Duffy 8:22:49 PM
Mr. Malcontent, I have to agree with you.
Christine Duffy 8:23:39 PM
Hi Gary *waves* I think Dana K has pre-recorded this show, but I'm not 100% certain.
Dana K (host) 8:25:06 PM
Hi everyone, thanks for tuning in! Yes, this show was pre-recorded in my "home studio". I do take requests for future shows (though my next won't be for another two weeks).
Dana K (host) 8:25:51 PM
There are a handful of DJs doing it live but I'm not one of them! (yet)
ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ 8:26:53 PM
@ChristineDuffy, I have to agree and concur with both of us!! *waves at Gary also, in addition, too
Dana K (host) 8:29:18 PM
To be fair to my dad, we have a lot in common and he's given tons of money to WPRB over the years - he just really couldn't stand that one Nervous Gender song!
Gary 8:29:25 PM
I think the title track from Smashing Pumpkins' Oceania ought to get airplay. I understand they may be too commercial, but want to say I have heard The Beatles on this station before.
ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ 8:32:55 PM
Big respect to the Parental Unit Of The Day: DJDanaDad!! To be fair, I was just making #DadJokes!!
Christine Duffy 8:34:23 PM
Dana, your Dad sounds very cool. All parents are allowed to hate on a few cool songs, especially when they support the station overall. 💗
Dana K (host) 8:34:58 PM
Haha, dad jokes are always welcome.
Christine Duffy 8:35:21 PM
#DadJokes are always worth a mention.
ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ 8:35:37 PM
I probably don't understand the concept. SMH, ClassicMrM.
Christine Duffy 8:36:49 PM
I have heard the Beatles on WPRB several times. Yeah, they are pretty commercial.
Christine Duffy 8:37:23 PM
I heard the Beatles were bigger than Jesus at one time
Jason 8:41:16 PM
Hey. I’m a fan of the show. The terrestrial airwaves were not cooperating so I came here to stream. West Philly is a bit too far for Princeton’s juice to reach. Hi all.
Dana K (host) 8:41:52 PM
I live in West Philly too, Jason, so I know how you feel. Thanks for listening!
Christine Duffy 8:42:47 PM
*waves* Hey, Jason
ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ 8:48:45 PM
I like this random playlist with all these nice selections!! Cheers to DJ Dana K!
Dana K (host) 8:49:55 PM
you're too kind :) :)
Jason 8:49:52 PM
That last song sorta reminded me of Slant 6.
Dana K (host) 8:51:55 PM
I can definitely hear that. I wish I knew if any of the members of Household went on to anything else.
Jason 8:54:45 PM
So your dad presumably listens to the kind of music one may expect to hear on WPRB? That’s pretty cool.
Gary 8:57:05 PM
As per a recent announcement, there is a MCIS/Machina sequel in the works. Not sure if there are any Pumpkins fans here.
Dana K (host) 8:57:47 PM
Well he's more so a fan of the folk show on Sunday nights (Music You Can't Hear On The Radio). And my show when I'm in a poppier mood.
Wando 9:00:10 PM
Kaputt? More like Kerplunk
ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ 9:04:19 PM
Kerplunk? More like, KuhhFaww!
Dana K (host) 9:04:46 PM
Important Steaming Coils info I forgot to mention: they were 1/2 Brad Laner (Savage Republic, Medicine, etc)
Wando 9:06:01 PM
And Pilgrim State. Don't forget them.
Christine Duffy 9:06:04 PM
I'm of an age where I remember playing Kerplunk. 😄 Any Kerplunk players in the house?
jimbeaux 9:13:37 PM
Yay Monitor! They actally had Meat Puppets record a track on that album for them...they couldn't manage the noise they imagined for it.
Dana K (host) 9:15:49 PM
Yes! That early version of the Meat Puppets was so wild.
jimbeaux 9:17:27 PM
And then somehow mutated into an accomplished country, jam, whatever they wanted band. Great show!
Jason 9:17:29 PM
I saw “World Imitation Productions” as the label. The only other time I have seen that phrase is on the sleeve of the first Meat Puppets EP. I was wondering if there was a connection.
ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ 9:18:18 PM
Yay, MEAT PUPPETS! 😜😋🙃
Dana K (host) 9:21:34 PM
Jason, World Imitation was an music/art collective based in LA, and Monitor was the name of the band that came from that. Wikipedia might explain it better: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Imitation_Productions
Wando 9:28:22 PM
So into this French stuff!
Dana K (host) 9:30:22 PM
that song is on the same compilation as your favorite band, swingo porkies
Wando 9:31:07 PM
those Porkies are total swingers!
jimbeaux 9:31:35 PM
OMG big butter!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dana K (host) 9:33:28 PM
so glad you appreciate big butter, jim! i know virtually nothing about them!
jimbeaux 9:34:16 PM
Got it when it came out in this heavy cardboard slleve
jimbeaux 9:34:54 PM
Handprinted sleeve...very obscure, very fun!
Dana K (host) 9:36:13 PM
ah, would love to see their records IRL!
jimbeaux 9:40:38 PM
Worked in a record store...so much of the rare stuff never made it past the employees (who spent all their wages(
Gary 9:41:31 PM
In the spirit of Halloween, check out: Smashing Pumpkins - O Rio
Dana K (host) 9:43:09 PM
i'd love to work at a record store again someday. i spent most of 2019 working for the record store commie francis' husband owns. perfect job for me.
jimbeaux 9:46:16 PM
So much fun...crash course in music. BTW love! Love! Yumbo!
Christine Duffy 9:46:25 PM
That sounds like a dream job.
Gary 9:47:16 PM
Many free in-house concerts, too.
Gary 9:47:40 PM
I'm guessing
Christine Duffy 9:48:32 PM
I bet!
Dana K (host) 9:48:51 PM
not at the store i worked at - it was too small!
Christine Duffy 9:49:30 PM
I want a time machine so I can re-visit Third Street Jazz & Rock. Jerry Gordon's iconic music store.
Dana K (host) 9:49:36 PM
record shopping and live music, the two things i miss the most in corona times. and broadcasting from the actual WPRB studio.
Christine Duffy 9:51:03 PM
Dana, do you or any of the djs have access to the stacks? Or are you all just operating with your own personal collections?
Dana K (host) 9:53:12 PM
nope, we're all working from our personal collections.
Dana K (host) 9:54:41 PM
lmao, i made a lot of mistakes editing this one. serves me right to record my mic breaks at 4 am.
Christine Duffy 9:55:13 PM
You have a fantastic collection 👍
Gary 9:55:23 PM
For the live shows, are you able to make use of songs published on Bandcamp and Youtube?
jimbeaux 9:56:11 PM
Agree...so many surprises & deep tracks from Dana!
Jason 9:57:19 PM
I also worked in record stores for several years. Tower Records, then Sound of Market. The pay was shit, but it was fun bullshitting about music all day long.
Dana K (host) 9:57:19 PM
Bandcamp, definitely. We're discouraged from using Youtube (but that doesn't mean I haven't).
Dana K (host) 9:58:13 PM
Sound of Market was my favorite record store! They had so much wild stuff on the 3rd level!
Jason 9:58:47 PM
I remember Third Street Jazz & Rock. That place was a wonderland! I bought so many amazing records and CD from there.
Gary 9:58:18 PM
Just asking in general. Good to know.
Jason 10:00:09 PM
That’s where I worked. Up on the third floor. I was there 1998-2000.
Dana K (host) 10:02:29 PM
Ah, a little before my time then. I was there all the time in 2004/2005.
Jason 10:05:17 PM
It was so much better just a bit before you came around. Our selection was nuts. They scaled back around the time I left. Nobody knew about that place. We had a bad location.
Dana K (host) 10:07:48 PM
Which Tower did you work at?
Christine Duffy 10:08:19 PM
Jerry Gordon, the owner of Third Street Jazz & Rock is the force behind the Serenade To A Cuckoo show.
Jason 10:08:43 PM
The owners were this elderly immigrant couple. They did not like or know about music at all. The Beatles could have walked through the door and they would. not have know who they were. They could just as well have been selling socks for a living. It was astonishing. They stumbled onto a set of very knowledgeable and dedicated buyers.
Christine Duffy 10:08:44 PM
Some of you here probably know this already, so apologies.
Jason 10:10:19 PM
The whole store was great too. It wasn't just rock and jazz. We had a top notch selection of rap, 12” dance, and soul on the 2nd floor too.
Christine Duffy 10:10:47 PM
@Jason, this was Tower Records?
Jason 10:11:08 PM
I was still talking about Sound of Market.
Jason 10:11:31 PM
To answer your question, I worked at the Tower on South Street.
Dana K (host) 10:12:07 PM
You could not have guessed from street level that Sound of Market had so much great stuff. I can only imagine what it was like before I started going.
Jason 10:11:53 PM
I was at Tower 1996-1997
Christine Duffy 10:12:08 PM
OK, thanks Jason.
Jason 10:12:30 PM
I never set foot in the place before I got hired there. I didn’t know it was there.
Wando 10:14:56 PM
I did a ton of medical studies at TJU and would stop in at Sound of Market after every appointment to look through the bins. This is probably 2000 until they closed.
Dana K (host) 10:17:17 PM
I used to take the train in from Jersey for weekend classes at Moore, and would always hit up Sound of Market afterwards.
Jason 10:20:33 PM
Oh you did medical studies, Wando? Like clinical trials? I did that too, but for SmithKlineBeecham. Great money.
jimbeaux 10:23:39 PM
Guinea pigs in the chat, have we? :)
Wando 10:23:41 PM
TJU, GSK, Penn, Drexel, Temple, Astrazeneca, BMS, Ivy Laps, and probably a few spots I'm forgetting. Wyeth.
Jason 10:24:52 PM
Wow. You got around!
Wando 10:25:13 PM
Not having a job is hard work!
Dana K (host) 10:26:19 PM
Don't Back the Front: Music for Guinea Pigs
Wando 10:26:22 PM
That's the subtitle for my radio show, tyvm. Don't bite off my ideas!
Jason 10:27:48 PM
After I quit Sound of Market, Drug studies was how I made ends meet for a good while.
Jason 10:28:26 PM
Only people who were pumped full of drugs could appreciate these sounds.
Dana K (host) 10:28:51 PM
Experimental drugs, at that!
Wando 10:29:00 PM
There was a band from Philly that named themselves after a place that did skin studies. Ivy Labs. They were decent. Solid concept!
Christine Duffy 10:40:33 PM
I love these chats: we've got an intersection of record store employees who also have done clinical studies.
Christine Duffy 10:43:01 PM
Great show tonight, Dana K. Thanks! 🗳 VOTE!
Dana K (host) 10:43:01 PM
I love it too, Christine!
Jason 10:43:49 PM
What records stores did you work at, Dana & Jimbeau?
Dana K (host) 10:44:40 PM
I worked at Wild Mutation last year and Common Beat (the one on Baltimore Ave) for a little bit in 2018.
Jason 10:45:09 PM
Ah. Cool.
Jason 10:45:41 PM
I heard Common Beat got looted two nights ago. It’s a shame.
Jason 10:46:27 PM
There is a bunch of broken music shit I have been meaning to take down there to look into getting fixed.
Dana K (host) 10:46:57 PM
I recommend them wholeheartedly. Good folks.
Dana K (host) 10:48:31 PM
I'm going to get ready for bed! Thanks everyone for tuning in tonight and hanging out in the chat - it was the perfect way to spend a rainy Thursday evening. I'll be on again in two weeks!
Dana K (host) 10:49:01 PM
And please enjoy the Homosexuals song and Diane di Prima poem I tacked onto the end of this to fill my allotted 3 hours :)
Jason 10:49:31 PM
The chat experience was cool. I’m glad I stumbled onto it. Take care.
ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ 10:51:01 PM
