good evening! hope everyone had a fine thanksgiving, if you celebrate.
Mark 8:11:51 PM
Hi Dana K - very nice advice about staying and keeping others safe / I like that u don’t just assume everyone celebrates
Mark 8:12:41 PM
Pretty seemless coming to your chat from Lizbot
Dana K (host) 8:14:56 PM
hi mark, thanks for sticking around!
Jason 8:15:09 PM
Hello all
Dana K (host) 8:15:44 PM
hi again jason!
jimbeaux 8:15:26 PM
These Cigs are smokin' !
Jason 8:17:07 PM
The Cigarettes sounded like a sloppier Buzzcocks or a more polished Fall.
Jason 8:17:27 PM
I am not previously familiar that band.
Mark 8:18:20 PM
Ha thanks for the music / your conversation about the bromley contingent a couple weeks ago inspired me to do a little investigation on a term I hadn’t heard in decades
Dana K (host) 8:18:50 PM
the cigarettes had that mod/punk thing going on - a theme i explore in this show a little further
Bo 8:19:02 PM
Hi Dana K. No. I agree with you about this day. Loved that Carpettes song, tight.
Jason 8:19:44 PM
I am not familiar the Chefs either. This is nice. I see its on Graduate Records. I wonder if it’s the same Graduate that put out the early UB40 records.
jimbeaux 8:19:31 PM
The chefs are even more smokin!
Dana K (host) 8:21:27 PM
the chefs' singer helen still has an active solo career, she's absolutely charming.
Mark 8:21:36 PM
Obviously took me to the infamous tv interview w Siouxsie Sioux in it Kinda mild by today’s standards/ shocking back then
Dana K (host) 8:23:22 PM
and that interview was the inspiration for "where's bill grundy now" by the television personalities!
Jason 8:23:44 PM
Classic song!
Bo 8:23:53 PM
Thanks for playin' The Moondogs, I didn't think they'd made it across the pond, did you watch the Film Good Vibrations?
Mark 8:24:41 PM
Haha sometimes I find it hard to believe you’re a millennial :) !
Dana K (host) 8:25:59 PM
i'll take that as a compliment!
Dana K (host) 8:27:20 PM
and bo, no, i've never seen that movie.
Bo 8:28:03 PM
You know what it's about yeah?
Mark 8:28:11 PM
Haha the only way to interpret! WPRB has the greatest most diverse group of women dj’s in the universe- Thursday is a fantastic listening day
Bo 8:28:59 PM
Dito Mark, I wish every day was Thursday.
Dana K (host) 8:30:07 PM
i'm looking it up now and it looks entirely up my alley!
Dana K (host) 8:31:05 PM
and i'm so honored to be on after lizbot, who i've been listening to for ten years now
Bo 8:31:32 PM
As I supposed.
Jason 8:31:49 PM
I see this is on Hearthan Records. That’s Pere Ubu’s jawn. These folks must be from Ohio.
Dana K (host) 8:32:37 PM
they're actually from boston if i recall correctly
Dana K (host) 8:32:51 PM
there's probably a story as to how they ended up on pere ubu's label
Jason 8:34:06 PM
They do have a Ubu type vibe somewhat. With those wooshing synths.
Dana K (host) 8:35:32 PM
apparently the only non-ohio band on the label! http://detailedtwang.blogspot.com/2009/01/girls-boston-freethinkers-1976-1979.html
Jason 8:35:39 PM
I looked them up on Discogs. Produced by David Thomas!
jimbeaux 8:37:00 PM
Cool connection!
Dana K (host) 8:38:50 PM
dinner just came out of the oven (took longer than expected!), so sorry if i'm not active here in the chat for a bit
Bo 8:40:33 PM
I LOOOVE The Primatons.
Jason 8:44:01 PM
The Embarrassment! Good stuff.
Mark 8:44:38 PM
Hahaha we can talk about Dana K for a bit behind her back / I’ll start she curates a fantastic show !
jimbeaux 8:45:47 PM
Indeed on Embarrassment! There's a really good early live video out there
Jason 8:45:25 PM
Totally. Each show has so many discoveries.
Jason 8:45:37 PM
Are you talking about that live video where he catches that beer? Do you know what I’m talking about?
Mark 8:46:26 PM
And if she posted to mixcloud this show seek it out : she did a special folk show in the studio before they closed them down
Mark 8:47:50 PM
It was incredible how she flowed the show - now I gotta check if she posted it
Jason 8:48:23 PM
Loud Family is nice too. This the dude from Game Theory.
Jason 8:49:02 PM
GF & LF both criminally unknown in their day.
Jason 8:49:08 PM
And now
jimbeaux 8:50:07 PM
@jason just remember the excellent performance...need to watch again! Live at Living Room?
Jason 8:50:47 PM
I just remembered that I saw a live clip of them years ago and someone in the audience throws a beer at the band and just landed perfectly in the singers hand and he doesn’t miss a beat. It was really impressive. I guess you had to see it.
Mark 8:52:51 PM
Who’s from game theory?! I’ve only become familiar with them last couple years
Bo 8:52:25 PM
SEAZOO... Nice!
Mark 8:53:43 PM
And Dana where are you :) ? Gotta couple questions?
Krista 8:54:24 PM
The Strum and Thrum Compilation is one of my favorite things to come out this year. Very good! Elliot played some from it yesterday, what a great record.
Jason 8:54:45 PM
The late Scott Miller was in Game Theory & Loud Family. Really original songwriter of angular pop songs.
Mark 8:57:08 PM
Ahhh ok a lot of it is coming together for me / yes he created a lot of great music Thanks for the info now I’m remembering
Dana K (host) 8:57:54 PM
you guys are all too sweet! i agree w/krista, the strum and thrum compilation is all killer no filler.
Krista 8:58:49 PM
He also wrote a great book on music criticism called Music:What Happened (scott miller)
Dana K (host) 8:58:38 PM
unfortunately i never got a copy of the folk show i did earlier this year, the studio shut down shortly afterwards :(
Bo 8:59:05 PM
I'm in agreement Krista and Dana K. FAB music.
Mark 8:59:55 PM
Ouch - yeah I just looked and saw it wasn’t there and was scared it was lost to the ethers
Dana K (host) 9:01:05 PM
i've got a lot of old episodes to upload, just gotta find the time and inclination
Mark 9:01:23 PM
I remember it may have been the last studio show I heard and it was brilliant! I remember it kinda being a tribute to ur dads music tastes
Bo 9:01:45 PM
Where are these guys from, love their sound?
Dana K (host) 9:01:56 PM
yup - still a bit sad that john prine was the last thing i ever played in the WPRB studio
Dana K (host) 9:02:13 PM
love, burns is a solo project by phil from pale lights (who are also great)
Mark 9:03:22 PM
Ok here’s my other question: I just heard a station id that haven’t heard in a long time: appropriate for today: the sweet potato pie ID !!
Mark 9:04:05 PM
It opened up one of the mixcloud shows
Mark 9:04:48 PM
I ain’t complaining about game theory/ loud
Mark 9:06:23 PM
Was John prine your last ? I thought you closed w phil ochs tape from CA
Dana K (host) 9:06:51 PM
it wasn't my last song, but i did play him at one point
Dana K (host) 9:07:06 PM
tape from california is my classic folk show closer, you're right though
Mark 9:07:16 PM
I do know it was a great heart felt show :)
Mark 9:08:33 PM
Now I wish a dj would use the sweet potato ID if possible
Mark 9:09:49 PM
Or WPRB where the records smell like baby ! 🍼
Mark 9:12:57 PM
But don’t push out that comie Francis ID u just used / and yes I’m kinda Station ID geek ;)
Jason 9:13:30 PM
If Phil Ochs was still alive, the last four years would have certainly generated some great Phil Ochs songs. I have literally thought to myself, “what would Phil Ochs have to say about this shit?”
Dana K (host) 9:15:13 PM
and so many of his songs are still incredibly relevant
Jason 9:21:24 PM
Indeed!
Jason 9:22:15 PM
I am old enough to fondly recall WPRB’s classic “hypnotized cheese” promos.
Jason 9:23:28 PM
http://www.wprbhistory.org/legend-wprbs-hypnotized-cheese/
Bo 9:23:39 PM
Its been 35 years since I've heard Icicle Works, I didn't appreciate them then, (being a wee Mod), now I do! :)
Dana K (host) 9:25:10 PM
i wish i had access to more than a handful of WPRB station IDs at the moment!
Bo 9:29:57 PM
Pauline Black is my Wife ;-)
Dana K (host) 9:30:10 PM
mine too! right on
Bo 9:30:38 PM
She's an amazing woman.
Jason 9:36:02 PM
AW SHIT
Jason 9:36:14 PM
This might be my favorite song.
Jason 9:37:22 PM
Definitely top ten.
Dana K (host) 9:37:46 PM
i almost played the tracey ullman version but felt the original was more in the spirit of the show
Jason 9:39:21 PM
The OG version has more cred.
Jason 9:39:30 PM
But I’ll take any version.
Jason 9:40:45 PM
“They Don’t Know” is a karaoke staple of mine.
Bo 9:41:15 PM
Kirsty was up there with the best.
Jason 9:48:29 PM
Sounds like early Echo & the Bunnymen
Dana K (host) 9:49:45 PM
Jasmine Minks, a fine Scottish band!
Bo 9:53:25 PM
Aye!
Jason 9:52:53 PM
HOLY SHIT.
Jason 9:53:04 PM
This is my second favorite song.
Jason 9:53:14 PM
Also a karaoke staple.
Dana K (host) 9:53:30 PM
It's one of my favorites too.
Bo 9:55:23 PM
HA! This is what my Geography Teacher taught me in Geography Class ...and fly fishing.
Mark 9:55:02 PM
Yes i agree w all the positive statements & vibes
Mark 9:56:15 PM
Jealous / no teacher of mine taught us fly fishing :)
Dana K (host) 10:02:23 PM
I just made that station ID, you're welcome
Christine Duffy 10:02:48 PM
Love the station ID just then. 😄
Christine Duffy 10:03:15 PM
Hey DJ Dana K *waves* 👋
Dana K (host) 10:03:28 PM
hi christine, hope you're well!
Christine Duffy 10:04:36 PM
Great, thank you. Happy Tofurkey day to you! I am thankful for Don't Back the Front & PRB 💙
Dana K (host) 10:05:04 PM
i'm thankful for WPRB too - and all our listeners <3
Bo 10:05:37 PM
HOLY SHIT! How the hell do you know about this song?!
Mark 10:06:13 PM
Haha I walk away for a second and I miss a new ID after all that earlier ID discussion:(
Pete Trenham 10:07:39 PM
Nice show! Was happy to hear The Loud Family. So underappreciated. Keep the jangle alive!
Dana K (host) 10:09:22 PM
I got that Secret Affair 7" a few years back when I was in London!
Dana K (host) 10:09:30 PM
Thank you, Pete!
Bo 10:11:35 PM
I like the way you think, if ever their was a Mod anthem during the second wave it was Time For Action, thanks for playing it!
Dana K (host) 10:12:50 PM
Of course!
Bo 10:13:45 PM
WOW! Never heard this.
Bo 10:23:24 PM
One of the greatest lyricists of our time, the Modfather.
Dana K (host) 10:25:28 PM
after i went to london during college i came home wanting very badly to be a Mod
Bo 10:27:15 PM
Weeell, it's never too late!
Mark 10:29:36 PM
Ha great dj’s think alike esoterica veered into blow up territory today as she’s want to do / she also discussed mods too - believe she even brought up riding a vesper
Mark 10:30:01 PM
* wont
Dana K (host) 10:30:17 PM
that's because esoterica is way cool!
Bo 10:35:39 PM
I think you meant Vespa unless you didn't?!
Bo 10:39:12 PM
Ahhh ... Vox guitar, beautiful.
Jason 10:42:42 PM
Nice 👍
Dana K (host) 10:54:18 PM
Thanks everyone for listening tonight. I am thankful for all of you! I am probably going to be going LIVE if not for next week's show, then for the week after that!
