This fine kriti is rarely sung these days

T S Ramaa was a very talented musician, hardly known outside Karnataka. To quote Thomas Grey: "Full many a flower is born to blush unseen and waste its sweetness on the desert air"

Good morning! Enjoying the wonderful music this Saturday morning
Sangeet Team (host) 10:22:07 AM
Nice to hear from you, Dude
Sangeet Team (host) 10:22:47 AM
What you are hearing is the only composition in this very rare raga (or scale)
Sangeet Team (host) 10:34:57 AM
Kokilavarali and this composition are again the only raga/composition pair.
the_dude 10:39:40 AM
Ok cool, yeah it's great to hear more information about different ragas as you listen to them, thank you!
the_dude 10:39:52 AM
And it's nice to hear these compositions!

The accompanying violinist, T Chowdiah, designed his own 7-stringed instrument to improve the tonal qualityand "loudness" of the violin (during pre-mike concerts)

Brindavanisaranga is found in both the Hindustani and Carnatic systems. There are some variations in the renderings
Sangeet Team (host) 11:35:09 AM
Durga has its equivalent in Karnatic music - raga Shudha Saveri

@ Dude - we chatted briefly last week about how to gain familiarity with different ragas. Some ragas last have a 'sound' that you can recognize with experience. Durga is one of them. If you hear various artists perform Durga, you can begin to recognize it. Other common (Hindustani) ones are Darbari and Malkauns.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:44:35 AM
Listening regularly is a good way to learn to recognize the ragas. There are many other ragas that, like Malkauns, become easily familiar as you listen. I can mention Bhimpalasi, Puriyadhanashree, etc. Enjoy

And of course the Hindustani Bhairavi / Sindhu Bhairavi. That one is very appealing.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:46:23 AM
You are right on the dot
Sangeet Team (host) 11:48:05 AM
Don't you agree that that Carnatic music with a more elaborate composition construct helps remember ragas easier?
Sangeet Team (host) 11:50:47 AM
Hi evaD, since you mentioned Bhairavi, I can't disappoint you. Here it is
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 11:52:22 AM
That hasn't been my experience. But my listening history was heavily tilted towards Hindustani music for many years, mainly due to its availability in the west versus Carnatic music.
Twofive Assity 11:52:42 AM
This song...wow. love it. Definitely old and full of spirit.

and played by one of great flautists of the 20th century. He learnt music from the same guru as Ravi Shankar, etc, namely, Allauddin Khan of Maihar gharana

Sangeet hopes to see you all next Saturday. Stay safe.
