Patrick Blanco 12:08:42 PM
Good morning Jerry and happy Hanukkah.looking forward to great show
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:10:42 PM
Thank you Patrick, thank you Brian D. Nice to hear from you!
Christine Duffy 12:10:22 PM
Hi DJ Jerry, what a cool opener to this week's show! Inspired.
Christine Duffy 12:10:35 PM
Happy Hanukkah!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:12:29 PM
Thank you, Christine. Nice of you. I hope everyone will relate to the Hanukah music I play later on!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:12:55 PM
Patrick, how are you?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:15:18 PM
I should say enjoy, not "relate"
Brian D 12:17:40 PM
Jerry my wife says hi too. She loves hearing your voice/ accent!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:18:46 PM
Even my kids laugh at me!
Brian D 12:18:57 PM
I loved the openers today too. Sounded like gamelan and vibraphone combined
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:22:37 PM
This band "Barrett Martin" does short little atmospheric pieces; there are 17 on their latest album. They do have a predilection for asian-Indian sounding stuff.
Sangeet Wprb 12:23:27 PM
Sangeet approves...
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:28:04 PM
Thank you, Sangeet, an honor!
Brian D 12:28:08 PM
We were talking about the tribute lp Miles From India yesterday in dj Esoterica chat. Great Indian sounds fused with jazz doing Miles D tunes. Pete Cosey, Mike Stern, Wallace Roney, Gary Bartz, Jimmy Cobb, Ron Carter, Chick Corea, John MMcLaughlin, U. Srinivas & many others
Russell Woessner 12:29:09 PM
Thanks for the shoutout, Jerry!
Sangeet Wprb 12:31:47 PM
Miles From India. I've aired some from that on WPRB. It's an interesting blend. Jazz and Indian music have much in common.
Christine Duffy 12:33:21 PM
Miles from India is now on my list. Thanks, Brian D. for mentioning it during Esoterica's show yesterday.
Brian D 12:33:32 PM
Yes. My wife and I are big fans of Sangeet as well. Thank you for great Saturday morning music
the_dude 12:34:21 PM
Chiming in just to say I am really enjoying this track, thanks for the great music Jerry! And yeah these chats gave been top notch lately
Christine Duffy 12:34:02 PM
Another Sangeet fan here *waves*
Sangeet Wprb 12:35:06 PM
Thanks, Brian and Christine! It's always good to know people are out there listening.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:35:12 PM
Miles From India is so brilliant. You guys may or may not know Miles-Guinnivere. Heavy on the sitar. It is musically my most musically comfortable place to be.
Brian D 12:34:35 PM
What is current song/artist? Guitar
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:36:11 PM
It's an Indonesian pop AND fusion star named Dewa Budjana.
Brian D 12:35:48 PM
Yes Jerry! I have that David Crosby Miles cover on the deluxe Bitches Brew box set
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:37:23 PM
Right on, Brian.
Brian D 12:36:47 PM
It is very deep indeed. Miles did so well with that melody. Guinnevere
the_dude 12:37:47 PM
I too am enjoying the jazzy shred, all this music still coming out in 2020, wow
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:39:09 PM
This guitarist and many of his friends are fusion gus, and I don't know if there are any current guys that match it. Indonesian, asian sensibilities and western sensibilities.
Brian D 12:39:37 PM
I love all of discs 3 n 4 on the B Brew Complete Sessions box. Super funky and some super calming
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:41:44 PM
Thank you, Dude, nice to hear from you.
the_dude 12:44:18 PM
Do I hear a little delfonics in there?
the_dude 12:44:49 PM
Sorry, stylistics
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:46:11 PM
Absolutely, Dude. Is that incredible?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:46:47 PM
I sometimes confuse both bands also. The Philly sound.
the_dude 12:49:58 PM
It is! Was wonderful, subtle but clear, it fit in there really well. And, yeah love that Philly sound, haha I'll forgive myself if you've done the same.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:54:52 PM
There is a common thread between the two bands, songwriter Thom Bell
Mark 1:05:26 PM
Hi Jerry I hope I can add to ur chat discourse :)
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:06:57 PM
Hi Mark, by all means!
Brian D 1:06:37 PM
Ed Neumeister.. I recognized that name. He played w Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders in the funk jazz soul band they had for a little while in late 70s called Reconstruction
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:08:30 PM
Brian, that is some crazy knowledge. It's the fact that you summoned up a fact that only 4 other living people know!
Brian D 1:08:36 PM
Ahh the not so old days of cassette tape collecting
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:09:21 PM
Thanks, Mark. I appreciate the sacrifice you are making to listen today!
Russell Woessner 1:10:27 PM
I wonder what titles Mingus would have come up with today....
Brian D 1:10:12 PM
Reconstruction did a great version of What You Won't Do For Love (Bobby Caldwell made famous l
Mark 1:11:12 PM
Haha 😂 maybe it’ll count when i go before st peter?!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:12:04 PM
He may or may not open the gate.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:12:46 PM
Brian, I have to look that up!
Brian D 1:13:42 PM
And Jerry & Merl before Reconstruction did a great version of Donny Hathaway's "Valdez in the Country"
Mark 1:15:16 PM
And for all that liked the Indonesian fused music earlier there’s a Bali holiday market in mt airey this weekend - I’ll be checking it out !
Brian D 1:14:41 PM
Used to teach that one to the kids who had a lil interest in the funk and jazz
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:15:37 PM
Russ, his song titles would be similar to this one except it would also include the word Trump.
Brian D 1:15:09 PM
That sounds great Mark
Russell Woessner 1:15:40 PM
Hey Mark, where is the Bali market in Mount Airy?
Christine Duffy 1:16:18 PM
That's crazy: a Blondie reference in the middle of that song?
Mark 1:17:23 PM
I got an email on it this morning / outdoor at Sedgwick street corner
Mark 1:18:10 PM
Not sure if their affiliated w a store ?
Russell Woessner 1:18:17 PM
Sedgwick & ? Germantown Ave? Times?
Brian D 1:19:16 PM
I heard a great riff rock band from Indonesia few yrs ago named Mooner. Tabiat is the name of lp. Really good rnr
Mark 1:21:26 PM
Sedgwick & Sherman 10-3 this weekend and next
Russell Woessner 1:21:50 PM
Cool. Thanks, Mark.
Mark 1:23:28 PM
They had a fantastic Bali pop up store in cheesy nut hill last year for month December/ she spent most of the year in Indonesia and brought back great stuff - couldn’t do this year
Mark 1:23:58 PM
Obviously chestnut hill !! Not cheesy
Russell Woessner 1:24:23 PM
yeah, cheesy!
Mark 1:25:29 PM
Haha amazing what auto corrects to ;)
Brian D 1:25:48 PM
I can smell the brisket!
Patrick Blanco 1:26:45 PM
A holiday where you beat up other people???where s that in the Talmud
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:27:05 PM
Hi Christine, There are 4 million songs called Call Me. This is one sung by Chris Montez, who was someone who had hits before the british invasion and then after. This sounded "hip" in 1964, Check it out. Chris Montez-call me
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:29:12 PM
Patrick: Commemorating the Maccabees guerilla victory over the Selucid emperor Antiochus III is part of the holiday. Then getting the second Temple back, the lights, etc.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:29:33 PM
Haha, Brian, I wish this had a haha icon!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:32:04 PM
Patrick, interestingly no mention of of the maccabees or this event in the "Old Testament" only in the New Testament.
Patrick Blanco 1:34:08 PM
You had me at Maccabees.time for me to convert. I always wanted to attend a Bnai.birth.dinner.
Christine Duffy 1:34:45 PM
Thanks, DJ Jerry. I will definitely be checking out Chris Montez!
Bud Burroughs 1:34:56 PM
I think Catholics consider the Maccabees books to be part of their Old Testament. But having been raised protestant, I'm not that familiar with it!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:40:44 PM
You're right, Bud, I am correcting myself. From Wiki: accounts of the Maccabees are included in the Old Testament used by the Catholic and Orthodox Churches,[34] since those churches consider the books deuterocanonical. They are not included in the Old Testament books in most Protestant Bibles since most Protestants consider the books apocryphal.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:41:56 PM
Yeah, Patrick, Moses and Judah the Hammer, our two biggies
Bud Burroughs 1:43:33 PM
I guess from the Jewish standpoint they're considered historically correct, but not "canon"?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:44:54 PM
Bud, exactly.
Bud Burroughs 1:46:16 PM
By the way, I love the way one of these recent "Klezmerized" an American fiddle tune!
Bud Burroughs 1:46:39 PM
That should say "one of these recent tracks..."
the_dude 1:46:33 PM
Hey Jerry, just sharing if you didn't know that the chat does support emojis 😁😬🤣 ! Along with other ⓝⓔⓐⓣ sʞxıɹʇ. If only it had gifs!
Brian D 1:50:15 PM
I thouht I heard something familiar... What fiddle tune and which recent song?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:50:21 PM
Ahh Dude, I'm on my desktop
the_dude 1:52:54 PM
There's a few ways to do that still if you're interested, not trying to sideline the conversation just give you some tools to enjoy yourself in the chat
Bud Burroughs 1:53:39 PM
It may have been the "Litvak Square Dance". The tune was Devil's Dream, reharmonized into a Klezmer mode.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:53:04 PM
Brian, I think Bud must be talking about Mickey Katz and His Orchestra-Litvak Square Dance. Not positive because I don't know square dance music. But because the "fiddle" was a big part of Klezmer music, it's easy to do bluegrass tunes. If you and everyone don't know Mandolin player Andy Statman, please check him out on YouTube.
Bud Burroughs 1:54:24 PM
Andy Statman is phenomenal, on both Mandolin and clarinet!
Russell Woessner 1:56:09 PM
Statman did a beautiful set on the recent Ragas Live Festival on another radio station.
Brian D 1:58:29 PM
Love Andy Statman. I have his cd with David Grisman.
Brian D 1:58:52 PM
Devils Dream. Great tune!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:00:20 PM
Brian, you had me at brisket!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:03:59 PM
This is an outrageously informed group here today. Absolutely crazy.
Christine Duffy 2:04:38 PM
Another reason I love WPRB. Every show is an education.
Brian D 2:06:31 PM
I have to play that one more on the mando. And gtr. I have a bunch of fiddle tunes on sheet music. Gotta print up Devil's Dream
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:07:49 PM
That Statman/Grisman CD captures all the great Jewish melodies. A beautiful and historic album. Andy Statman was born in 1950. His music is sacred and secular but always great.
Brian D 2:08:28 PM
I got David to sign that cd.
Brian D 2:08:48 PM
Yes great melodies
Bud Burroughs 2:11:36 PM
Both players are so fluent in so many styles of music - they can combine them in a way that really works.
Brian D 2:12:02 PM
What a band on this Smokey tune Go Go. Funk Bros rule the school
Brian D 2:12:47 PM
And... this one! One of my fave Motown records
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:14:29 PM
I am proud to say I went to junior high school and was friends with the guy who produced the Funk Bros movie.
Brian D 2:14:56 PM
Doc Licks. Great job
Christine Duffy 2:27:19 PM
The age-old question: do you love me now that I can dance?
Brian D 2:28:07 PM
Do You Love Me reminds me of Bootsy in that movie
Brian D 2:28:33 PM
And Cool Jerk of course
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:29:27 PM
I was meditating, Christine, of a wild-eyed guy singing this into an ex-girlfriends face!
Brian D 2:39:39 PM
The ascending strings ( and keyed percussion ) make it happen
Brian D 2:41:55 PM
On This Old Heart
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:43:58 PM
I realized how great Glady Knight was years later.
Christine Duffy 2:57:13 PM
These three hours flew, like they always do! Thanks, DJ Jerry for another, educational, inspiring, danceable show!
Christine Duffy 2:58:21 PM
Thanks, cool people in the chat 👋
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 3:00:32 PM
Thanks, Christine, you illuminated the chat
Brian D 3:00:42 PM
Great time y'all
Brian D 3:01:14 PM
