Hi everyone. Today we'll be remembering Harold Budd, who sadly passed away last Wednesday due to complications from COVID. Feel free to pass through the chat with any thoughts on Harold, his music, experiences, favorite songs, albums and the like.
Christine Duffy 5:04:22 PM
Hey DJ Deidre *waves 👋
Christine Duffy 5:04:43 PM
Love that station ID. 😄
deirdre dionysiac (host) 5:05:32 PM
Hiya Christine! Haha me too, though it lacks the same when I'm on time 🙄
deirdre dionysiac (host) 5:05:42 PM

Christine Duffy 5:06:20 PM
Rest in Peace, Harold Budd. I love that you're devoting your entire show to his music.
jimbeaux 5:09:38 PM

jimbeaux 5:10:16 PM
and howdy D.D. and C.D.!
deirdre dionysiac (host) 5:10:38 PM
Really. There's a lovely interview with Harold I'll be playing a snippet of done by dublab posted on youtube where he talks at length about that experience.
deirdre dionysiac (host) 5:10:51 PM
And howdy jimbeaux
jimbeaux 5:11:30 PM
cool! just heard they were together but had not idea to what extent
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 5:12:06 PM
Since his Pavillion Dreams, I've enjoyed Harold Budd's music. Any plans to play a side of "Abandoned Cities"?
deirdre dionysiac (host) 5:14:23 PM
It will be making an appearance. Love the darkness of that one in comparison to the rest of his palette
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 5:15:00 PM
Yes. It does take up quite a bit of time. Never heard this Oak of the Golden Dreams before.
deirdre dionysiac (host) 5:19:20 PM
Wasn't in much circulation. From what I understand, once he collaborated with Brian Eno and kind of found himself musically, he wasn't too keen on the work he had done pre-Pavilion of Dreams
Christine Duffy 5:24:08 PM
Hi, jimbeaux and DJ Dave *waves*
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 5:27:03 PM
Hello Christine! Yeaux Jimbeaux.
Christine Duffy 5:51:43 PM
So wordlessly beautiful and expressive.
deirdre dionysiac (host) 5:53:44 PM
I'm always doing the single tear down one cheek routine when listening to him, like i'm in a movie
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 6:00:22 PM
Nice transition just there.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 6:01:37 PM
Those interview excerpts really give extra dimension to this survey of Budd's music.
deirdre dionysiac (host) 6:03:03 PM
I've never really tried incorporating stuff from the horse's mouth like so, glad it's doing something.
Christine Duffy 6:06:28 PM
It's fantastic to hear Harold talk directly about his process and style.
Christine Duffy 6:09:24 PM
That baby crying in the background really got me in the heart. His music brings up so many feelings, and just then I was missing my Mom.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 6:14:41 PM
I am SO glad I decided against attempting a Harold Budd tribute for my show tomorrow. ⛈
deirdre dionysiac (host) 6:14:51 PM
Ah, yeah, I agree. Music for soothing and for longing at the same time. Hope it does more of the former for you, but missing someone can be therapeutic too.
deirdre dionysiac (host) 6:15:23 PM
It was a gamble, Dave. I kept checking recent playlists to see that someone else didn't get to it first
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 6:21:05 PM
I expected Mickey to do his usual tribute, but I think he had already committed to Zappa.
Shane Navoy 6:21:13 PM
I am enjoying the overview of Harold's work, Dierdre. I have a smattering of Budd's stuff but far from enough (obviously). Thanks for going through the trouble.
deirdre dionysiac (host) 6:26:06 PM
I'll keep trying to present a full array for you to choose your next album to explore, Shane. I feel like his albums need to be lived with for a longer period of time anyhow so I think you're doing it right.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 6:35:32 PM
Oh, I just noticed your playlist entries are getting updated with afterthoughts. 💡
deirdre dionysiac (host) 6:38:18 PM
I'm trying to stay on my guard with updating the playlist, the songs are all starting to blend together for me!
Elizabeth Moreland 6:41:14 PM
Hey, Dierdre. Elizabeth in Illinois here. Just found out through your show that Harold has passed. Damn. My favorite from him will always be "The Child With a Lion" off White Arcades. I had taped it as a teen one night off a distant, fuzzy Canadian station in...1988? Went for decades not knowing who/what the artist or song was until one serendipitous occurrence via the internet, many years later. My husband has almost all of his stuff...we're both quite sad about his passing. Damn you, covid.
deirdre dionysiac (host) 6:47:25 PM
Hi Elizabeth. Sorry to be the bearer of ill news, but glad this transmission reached you! I was having trouble deciding between "The Child with a Lion" and "The Real Dream of Sails" and should've just played both! Thank god for youtube and husbands with record collections 😄
Esoterica 6:47:40 PM
good evening, deirdre! I am writing right now and te harold budd tribute is a fitting accompaniment. thank you:) plus you are so smart! love your analysis.
deirdre dionysiac (host) 6:48:33 PM
Esoterica! Awesome to hear from you. Further evidence that Harold draws in a heady crowd!
Esoterica 6:49:54 PM
:) this one is especially meditative
jimbeaux 7:34:40 PM
Truly sublime show, thank you for doing this...
jimbeaux 7:40:24 PM
Any chance of a rebroadcast or archive? Missed a chunk during dinner.
deirdre dionysiac (host) 7:42:56 PM
Wish it weren't necessary but it has felt a bit cathartic to play it out. And I could send an mp3 to you via email if you'd like. I could give you my email and then take it down from the chat, and you could shoot me an email to request it. I don't have any public archive unfortunately but wouldn't mind doing it.
deirdre dionysiac (host) 7:50:34 PM
ah what the heck, it's deirdre@wprb.com if you'd like to request a file.
jimbeaux 7:53:43 PM
Thank you!!!
Christine Duffy 7:54:28 PM
DJ Deirdre, what an deep, insightful show. 💗 Thank you for sharing your knowledge. This three hours passed incredibly quickly.
Elizabeth Moreland 7:55:28 PM
Thanks again for another terrific show. Like someone mentioned below, truly sublime. And hey, I learned something new: Harold collaborated with Blaine Reininger of Tuxedomoon, another favorite band of my younger years.
deirdre dionysiac (host) 7:57:00 PM
Thanks for stopping by with thoughts/feelings Christine, Elizabeth & all!

Wanted to drop in and thank you for playing this excellent send off of Harold Budd.
Elizabeth Moreland 7:58:16 PM
Also wanted to mention that I too, had a roost of vultures outside my apartment in Mt. Holly when I lived there. About 65 of them would return to a 200 year old maple every November. I welcomed them and miss them.
deirdre dionysiac (host) 7:59:47 PM
Wowie, I think they're a bunch of pines that the like. I've seen as many as 40 there! Hope they stay awhile without any ill tidings
deirdre dionysiac (host) 7:59:55 PM
Thanks everyone 👋
