The One Where I Listened To: a streaking flurry of hypnotic punk and impassioned, pounding Southern rock, the glorious psychedelic recreations of yesteryear, a savagely Mephistophelian take on Christmas, and the sweet, soothing carols of old friends

Good morning everyone! Hope you’re somewhere warm and cozy, away from the snow ❄️
Corage Mike 10:01:49 AM
👍
the_dude 10:03:27 AM
Cozy but not exactly away from snow! And good morning to you too
Corage Mike 10:04:11 AM
Hey Jim, tell the story.....
DJ Maxi (host) 10:06:39 AM
Oh there’s a story? It would go great with my hot chocolate and music right now
the_dude 10:08:39 AM
Yeah I'm down for story time
the_dude 10:08:58 AM
And yeah saved that band, they we're pretty cool
DJ Maxi (host) 10:09:48 AM
yeah I forgot the DJ but I heard them played on WFMU and it’s always nice to have more garage rock bands to choose from
DJ Maxi (host) 10:10:13 AM
hardest part for me is finding the right bangers to start off the show lol
the_dude 10:17:54 AM
Haha I remember you said that before! Yeah , I started paying attention to you're openers after that and I think you always start off great
the_dude 10:18:21 AM
And hopefully I'm taking off pressure saying that
the_dude 10:19:33 AM
And yeah what's fmu like? I've listened a bit and it's been recommended but I end up going back to prb pretty quickly
DJ Maxi (host) 10:21:15 AM
lol thanks! it does help, I guess it’s just an aesthetic itch I can’t get rid of.. like I feel the song needs to be something that grabs your attention
DJ Maxi (host) 10:21:44 AM
and it’s got a similar vibe but I think the shows are a little bit more niche-oriented.. I know Mike L had a show there for a few years wayback
DJ Maxi (host) 10:22:14 AM
I guess since it’s near New York it’s easy to tune into
the_dude 10:26:05 AM
Interesting, yeah sometimes I tune into kdu (Drexel's station) for similar reasons. And yeah I get that as a dj, so yeah as a listener you're doing a bang up job, definitely always gets my attention. But I can totally relate to the feeling of great, I did it, now do it again!
DJ Maxi (host) 10:30:42 AM
Ooh I should check them out. Before I think I really enjoyed the fact that a lot of these stations had their own chat rooms, so I’m glad we were able to implement that this year, it helps so much
DJ Maxi (host) 10:31:20 AM
Thanks dude! if you (and anyone else) has any recommendations we could use for the start that would always be appreciated! haha
the_dude 10:45:50 AM
Oh cool yeah I love to share ideas - and yeah kdu can be good, limited signal range, good reggae, metal, electronic shows, but sometimes the DJs are a little too unstructured, and that's coming from someone who likes unstructured radio and improvising banter lol
the_dude 10:46:13 AM
Did you ever check out united we doth?
DJ Maxi (host) 10:50:01 AM
lol that was probably like me my first year on the station, jumping from genre to genre with no restraint
DJ Maxi (host) 10:50:32 AM
yes I did! I thought hurricane and the earlier tracks were fun and hilarious, especially the Dadaist lyrics
DJ Maxi (host) 10:51:26 AM
It’s a pity PFFR was their last album I think
the_dude 11:01:08 AM
Haha glad you dug it. Yeah there's some good stuff mixed in there, hurricane is almost a playable on air good song. And yeah I hope they make more music one day .. also , genre hopping is fine it's just a lot of not knowing what to say.. pauses.. but that's college radio!
the_dude 11:01:48 AM
They do make music in a way, in their shows still, have you ever seen their short, suplex duplex complex?
DJ Maxi (host) 11:06:32 AM
No I haven’t! I think there’s an episode on YouTube... How does it compare with some of their other shorts??
Brian Pinna 11:28:57 AM
Just out of curiosity, have you ever played the shags on this segment?
the_dude 11:31:37 AM
Love the shags. And yeah it's a one off, there's a few on YouTube but some aren't by creators and I think quality is off. I like this link best
the_dude 11:31:41 AM
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://vimeo.com/328301821&ved=2ahUKEwi39savuNXtAhUNwlkKHaNgCRgQwqsBMAB6BAgBEAM&usg=AOvVaw1ZJrseL2tHF4AU1gNvZSJY
the_dude 11:31:50 AM
Whoa longer than I wanted sorry
DJ Maxi (host) 11:32:12 AM
I did not, unfortunately! I have played them maybe once earlier this year though.. any song you were thinking about Brian?
DJ Maxi (host) 11:32:30 AM
And that’s not a problem! Thanks for the link :)
the_dude 11:32:31 AM
The jokes per minute are pretty dense, it's great though if you're a fan of the rest of their work I think you'll like it
DJ Maxi (host) 11:33:30 AM
oh wow it already seems amazing, I know what I’m watching after the show haha. So was this never on adult swim?
the_dude 11:34:52 AM
Yeah it was, not sure when it aired but it was under infomercials , which is a bit of a catch all for them
the_dude 11:35:35 AM
But haha glad you're excited, love sharing that stuff with people. Sometimes I just play it to hear in background
DJ Maxi (host) 11:36:47 AM
I wonder then if adult swim online would have some of their other episodes.. I know that’s how I caught up with Xavier and the shivering truth lol
DJ Maxi (host) 11:37:11 AM
but yeah ofc, their jokes-per-minute density is unrivaled, I love it
the_dude 11:39:40 AM
Hahaha totally, me and my friends joked about the jpm's a lot in college. And yeah there's definitely more stuff on there, not everything though it's weird there's like a clip of similar short with emo Philips but the full thing isn't there
the_dude 11:40:02 AM
And yeah like other pffr, I think it's super smart with a slapstick veneer that's also legitimately funny. I could go on too long about it lol, watch it first! Then I'll bug ya lol
DJ Maxi (host) 11:42:56 AM
lol honestly I still have no idea what to expect because they always seem to surprise you with some other bit of madness. Thanks again! Hopefully I can get a good sound bite for some of the future station IDs
the_dude 11:43:29 AM
And like a little tim and eric-y but tighter and more intentional I think. Oh and great set btw, love bjm, one of my favorite bands!
the_dude 11:43:42 AM
Haha yeah there's probably a good sounds bite in there
DJ Maxi (host) 11:46:02 AM
ooh speaking of which, have you ever watched Scum? A bunch of my friends and I tried to see how many episodes of that show we could endure in a row before calling it a night haha
DJ Maxi (host) 11:46:58 AM
and thanks! yeah I really enjoyed their debut and “thank god...” would love to spam my shows with their songs, they’re that good
the_dude 11:51:07 AM
Oh 100% , spam away! They're really diverse too, you could marathon them and you wouldn't know it at first. Those are good albums. Fun to see live too. And lol yeah a bit but you've probably seen more than me then!
the_dude 11:51:18 AM
A fun challenge with friends though
the_dude 11:52:21 AM
Of their post awesome show stuff I really liked the interview s and videos they did for that self help book
DJ Maxi (host) 11:53:32 AM
Do you have a bjm album that stands above the others?
DJ Maxi (host) 11:54:17 AM
And I forgot they did a self help book.. there’s honestly so much content of theirs It’s insane loll. I think I enjoyed and laughed at some of Scum early on but I think I just get fatigue after a while
DJ Maxi (host) 11:55:37 AM
Thanks for listening and have a great week! Stay warm 🍵
the_dude 11:56:29 AM
Haha yeah the fatigue is real, part of the point but also does the job well and wears you out
the_dude 11:57:34 AM
And great show, thanks for chatting. And honestly not exactly an album, bravery repetition and noise is great but I also really like what you already played , majesties second request
the_dude 11:58:23 AM
And I'm busy at work so might miss your chat but thanks again!
DJ Maxi (host) 11:58:38 AM
No worries! Pleasure to chat and Will let you know what I think of suplex haha
