Could have been a tough segue coming from music you can't hear on the radio but I'm digging it

Thanks sean! It must be a pretty jarring segue driving around New Jersey when you're going from John one minute to loud guitar postrock the next, but as is WPRB

Well I jumped out of my seat, though not unpleasantly, at the cacophonous scrambled beginning... And when it settled down into a melodic echoey language guitar piece I was glad to be on board

Google AI better get its shit together and figure out how to interpret my verbalizations better if it truly wants to be my overlord. Otherwise I just roll my eyes at it

Talking about music is next to near impossible for me too. Which probably isn't great for a radio DJ. How do you even talk about music in the first place? Got guitars? Yep. Got lyrics? Sounds good?

Guitars lyrics all those things can be included or not depending on the piece... The great thing about music is it can go from a toon home down a blade of grass between your fingers to a peace played by six orchestras discordantly

Once again Google screwed up my verbal input. Supposed to say music can go from a tune blown on a blade of grass between your fingers

There are a couple disc jockeys on prb that I noticed are obsessed with putting a label on the music they're playing... Just today a guy was debating whether a song was pop punk or punk rock. Just listen to the music without trying to fit it into a box says I, I says

And then he played a Jam song from their LP sound Affects- Start- on a punk rock program that is not what I would call a punk rock program if I was trying to pigeonhole a group. Although I must say this isn't a complaint the show was excellent and a played a lot of good stuff

Totally get not wanting to put things in boxes, especially since almost all music is multi-"genre" to say the least....nothing really is "just" one thing

But that's what we humans love to do. Categorize! Organize! Put things in little mental boxes

Yeah that seems to be a trait of the verbal side of our brains, and the quieter listening side gets shut down. Just listen for listening, not for thinking"what should I call this? What am I listening to?"

Meanwhile these wprb DJs are playing fantastic stuff so obviously they're listening and appreciating side is working fine!

Through an evolutionary lens, our proclivity to categorizing and organizing and putting things in boxes have helped us evolve by naming things, being able to pass on knowledge and ways of dealing with the world

Reductionism is how we survive. All the billions of bytes of information we receive would kill us if we couldn't compartmentalize, put everything into neat and even, if completely arbitrary, categorizations. Music is the same. And to be fair, it's not often wholly unwarranted. So many bands sound exactly the same as other bands, copying vocal styles, musical styles, lyrics, etc. that it creates a bubble from which it seems impossible to differentiate different acts

That's what music blog writers are so good at, even if it often trends towards absurdism. Stretching the english language to encompass the sensory experience of music!

Yes we do have to compartmentalize everything we absorb and experience. The people that cannot do this end up in nut houses.

We ended up as verbalizing, compartmentalizing, reductivising (I think I just invented that word) beings to survive in the world that we are components of. We had to trade off the awe and mystery and wonder we once felt as barely sapient primates for the suit and tie wearing corporate lifestyle we "enjoy" now

And sometimes the music we hear and the music we play can bring us back to that time when all and wonder and happiness were not rare feelings

You have put together a really nice set of music that fits one song into the other. Obviously a lot of effort and it's appreciated by me at least

Thanks Sean. Really appreciate that. It's always a challenge to mix "genres" (even if they don't exist) in a way that doesn't sound super super jarring. I like to cover a decent amount of territory each show. Ecclectic radio!
