Once everyone is vaccinated, I'm hoping to see them in real life. My boyfriend has a work conference next year in Miami so we are going to take a bird watching tour to see them. They are known in the bird world as "rosies" which is really a cute name until you look at them up close into their glaring red eyes, haha

one last thing about their courtship behavior because it's hilarious and sweet: In courtship, male and female first interact aggressively, later perch close together, present sticks to each other, cross and clasp bills.

I hope you are able to go see them in person later in 2021 or in 2022. Yeah, that baleful red eye...

If you find out new facts, let us know next week! I am sorry to have missed the live seminar held online by a man whose whole career was spent studying the roseate spoonbill. I would have liked to ask him if he's ever gotten bitten by one and if it hurt!

my guess is that native people hunted them for their plumage while Euro settlers saw them as a threat to fishing like the manatee

They didn't get hunted to near extinction until the 1800s. The color fades from the plumage quickly.

There was a hat craze in the 1800s which nearly wiped out the beaver and the roseate spoonbill (also the bird of paradise and several other fancy birds from central america)

Kentman, I did a little research as to how the Native Americans used the spoonbill feathers, and they made fans with them! Still do as a protected ceremonial use.

This was about 10 years ago when I lived in Florida/ it was at a sanctuary that let me walk amongst them / they’re gorgeous- I love ur description up top about this species

Thanks, Mark. I've visited Florida 5 times? Something like that. I've enjoyed every visit. It's a beautiful place. I'm hoping to see the Keys before they are all underwater.

I don't want this show to end, Mark, I thought it was the latest New Yorker, it was the Dec 14th issue, and yes the article blew me away as this great show is doing right now!

also this part of the article burned me because if they opened up my bones to see what i ate, they would be very confused. A person who eats a diet of C3 plants, such as wheat, barley, and rice, will have isotope ratios of carbon in their bones different from those of a person eating a diet high in millets, which are C4.

my diet is high in gummy bears so perhaps they would find a new classification

I find this article contradicts itself about the ethics of DNA research. They state they moved the lab to India because of "fewer cultural problems" but it turns out they didn't actually have a liason with the culture they were studying. Sigh.

I think the research is valuable! I also think Dr. Reich should have picked up a history book before he got the idea of an ethnically homogenous white population of Europe (that never existed)

Lots of questions raised/ ethical and other /

"oh, I learned via DNA that wasn't true" - or you could have picked up literally thousands of books documenting the multicultural cities of Europe
