Habitat Enrichment

Jan 5, 2021 7:00 AM – 10:00 AM

With Krista

songs to make you feel like the plumage on the fabulous roseate spoonbill

Imagine a pink or magenta or anywhere in between bird.

Now take the flamingo you just imagined and turn its bill into a big flat grey spoon.

Turn the flamingo's eye red delicious red

the plumage, big red gum color

the eye, the big red gum packaging

keep the pink legs

SONGS LIKE THAT.

oh and some tunes I missed throughout the year and in my life

Good Morning Krista, Thank you for Gang of Four and political consciousness!
Krista (host) 7:59:24 AM
good morning, Kentman
kentman 8:24:50 AM
Great mix of genre, melody & rhythm as usual in your show today
Krista (host) 8:26:45 AM
thanks, I was all over the place genre -wise in my listening this week so I just decided to go with it
Krista (host) 8:30:09 AM
the band fishmans is who I've listened to most this week, I think
Christine Duffy 8:33:09 AM
Good morning DJ Krista! 👋 Wow, Alecie Renece is amazing.

Krista (host) 8:33:30 AM
Hi Christine! Yes, she has a gorgeous voice and control!
Krista (host) 8:33:42 AM
here is the bird in today's show: https://www.auduboneverglades.org/january-2018-bird-of-the-month-roseate-spoonbill/

Krista (host) 8:36:13 AM
one more, because I'm obsessed. What amazing and strange birds! https://fl.audubon.org/events/roseate-spoonbills-past-and-present
Christine Duffy 8:39:24 AM
Those babies are Pepto-Bismol beauties 💗
Krista (host) 8:42:19 AM
Once everyone is vaccinated, I'm hoping to see them in real life. My boyfriend has a work conference next year in Miami so we are going to take a bird watching tour to see them. They are known in the bird world as "rosies" which is really a cute name until you look at them up close into their glaring red eyes, haha
Krista (host) 8:43:49 AM
one last thing about their courtship behavior because it's hilarious and sweet: In courtship, male and female first interact aggressively, later perch close together, present sticks to each other, cross and clasp bills.
Christine Duffy 8:46:07 AM
I hope you are able to go see them in person later in 2021 or in 2022. Yeah, that baleful red eye...
kentman 8:45:51 AM
The beauty of Evolution worthy of singing out loud, thanks for the links, will study today. Those beaks are amazing!
Krista (host) 8:54:59 AM
If you find out new facts, let us know next week! I am sorry to have missed the live seminar held online by a man whose whole career was spent studying the roseate spoonbill. I would have liked to ask him if he's ever gotten bitten by one and if it hurt!
kentman 8:58:32 AM
my guess is that native people hunted them for their plumage while Euro settlers saw them as a threat to fishing like the manatee
Krista (host) 9:02:13 AM
They didn't get hunted to near extinction until the 1800s. The color fades from the plumage quickly.
Krista (host) 9:02:53 AM
There was a hat craze in the 1800s which nearly wiped out the beaver and the roseate spoonbill (also the bird of paradise and several other fancy birds from central america)
jimbeaux 9:05:06 AM
morning...joining in for the ornithology/musicology! and hat crazes.
kentman 9:07:04 AM
You're right LISTENING TO Alecia Renece
kentman 9:07:31 AM
is like being in a cathedral
Mark 9:09:43 AM
Hi Krista- beautiful bird / did u do ur on air discussion about it already ?
Krista (host) 9:10:14 AM
I did, Mark!
Mark 9:12:05 AM
If they’re anything like flamingos 🦩 the bites r only nips don’t hurt at all/ I’ve been around flamingos
Mark 9:12:47 AM
Darn I missed the discussion:(
Krista (host) 9:12:16 AM
Kentman, I did a little research as to how the Native Americans used the spoonbill feathers, and they made fans with them! Still do as a protected ceremonial use.
jimbeaux 9:13:58 AM
flamingo love bites, mark :)
Mark 9:15:12 AM
@kentman I liked that New Yorker article that u mentioned in Brian’s chat yesterday / really interesting- I relistened to it yesterday
Mark 9:16:10 AM
@jim - ha yeah they sneak up on u and give love nips :)
Krista (host) 9:18:05 AM
@Mark where are you close enough to flamingos to receive love nips from them??
Krista (host) 9:19:35 AM
(i'm jealous)
Mark 9:21:23 AM
This was about 10 years ago when I lived in Florida/ it was at a sanctuary that let me walk amongst them / they’re gorgeous- I love ur description up top about this species
Krista (host) 9:24:26 AM
Thanks, Mark. I've visited Florida 5 times? Something like that. I've enjoyed every visit. It's a beautiful place. I'm hoping to see the Keys before they are all underwater.
kentman 9:24:19 AM
I don't want this show to end, Mark, I thought it was the latest New Yorker, it was the Dec 14th issue, and yes the article blew me away as this great show is doing right now!
Mark 9:26:23 AM
This is a great sounding show and that article was fascinating quite the mystery and contrary views of those skeletons
Krista (host) 9:26:57 AM
what is this skeleton article?? I want to read it based on your enthusiasm
kentman 9:28:32 AM
Douglas Preston essay called The Skeleton Lake in the New Yorker magazine
Mark 9:28:55 AM
Kent can u link to article for Krista ? Interesting story about skeleton at a lake in India and their origins
Krista (host) 9:30:06 AM
I found it
kentman 9:30:10 AM
Krista, just google Douglas Preston, The Skeleton Lake
Krista (host) 9:30:25 AM
That's wild how he almost died at the same place in a blizzard!
Mark 9:30:50 AM
There’s a 45 minute audio read of it too / intersection of arch anthro genetics folklore real interesting
kentman 9:31:16 AM
nothing about birds in that piece just scientific sleuthing
Mark 9:31:53 AM
Haha yes no birds!
Krista (host) 9:33:19 AM
I'm at the part now where they baldly admit they study genetics in India because they don't have as many human research prohibitions!
kentman 9:34:15 AM
keep going it gets weirder
Mark 9:37:56 AM
The whole thing is fascinating with various controversies and competing views / theories
Krista (host) 9:39:03 AM
the wipeout of the egalitarian European goddess worshippers is very sad!
Mark 9:39:29 AM
Very nice show to start the year / I have to make sure I don’t miss parts but I like that u post to mixcloud Thanks!
Krista (host) 9:39:45 AM
also this part of the article burned me because if they opened up my bones to see what i ate, they would be very confused. A person who eats a diet of C3 plants, such as wheat, barley, and rice, will have isotope ratios of carbon in their bones different from those of a person eating a diet high in millets, which are C4.
Krista (host) 9:40:19 AM
my diet is high in gummy bears so perhaps they would find a new classification
Mark 9:40:54 AM
Haha no gummies back in 8 century/ I think :)
Krista (host) 9:42:39 AM
you're right, Mark, it took until 1682 (or so they claim)
Krista (host) 9:42:43 AM
https://www.history.com/news/jiggle-it-the-history-of-gelatins-aspics-and-jellies
kentman 9:42:58 AM
peanut butter crackers in my DNA what a thought
jimbeaux 9:43:48 AM
people have been masticating gelatinous/resinous substances for millennia!
Mark 9:43:14 AM
I read a few weeks ago and then listened to audio version while walking Tyler State Park/ great way to learn these things while in nature:)
jimbeaux 9:45:29 AM
pine and other tree saps, propolis from bees, etc. Maybe even dessicated worms, the OG Gummy Worm. In the wiggle room.
Krista (host) 9:45:32 AM
I'm personally deeply suspicious of entering my DNA into a genome database but I'm also adopted so the temptation is HUGE to find out what is goin on in my ancestry
Mark 9:45:55 AM
Hiking trails is also great place to listen to habitat enrichment!
Krista (host) 9:46:42 AM
haha, once you enter The Wiggle Room the food possibilities are endless
Krista (host) 9:48:13 AM
I find this article contradicts itself about the ethics of DNA research. They state they moved the lab to India because of "fewer cultural problems" but it turns out they didn't actually have a liason with the culture they were studying. Sigh.
Jon Solomon 9:49:09 AM
I'm hours late to say...
Mark 9:49:15 AM
He mentions how the one researcher is now w the very commercial dna business 23andme We could all write essays about the article
Jon Solomon 9:49:20 AM
SPACE SHUTTLE RIDE.
Krista (host) 9:50:23 AM
SPACE SHUTTLE RIDE
kentman 9:50:25 AM
shows that scientific research is a human activity prone to abuse
Krista (host) 9:51:05 AM
i agree kentman, and also shows WHY groups in the USA have fought so hard for laws binding archaelogical research
kentman 9:51:59 AM
native peoples in particular
Krista (host) 9:52:16 AM
I think the research is valuable! I also think Dr. Reich should have picked up a history book before he got the idea of an ethnically homogenous white population of Europe (that never existed)
Mark 9:51:52 AM
Lots of questions raised/ ethical and other /
Krista (host) 9:53:00 AM
"oh, I learned via DNA that wasn't true" - or you could have picked up literally thousands of books documenting the multicultural cities of Europe
jimbeaux 9:58:00 AM
thx Kristaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
Krista (host) 9:57:52 AM
I'm very interested for a followup to the article to find out why the small group of Greeks were on a Hindu pilgrimage but I wouldn't be suprised to find out that they were converts! I don't see why that's unbelievable!
Krista (host) 9:58:33 AM
I will close the the chat now for Stitchin' Pink! See you next week!
