Brian D 12:08:37 PM

Brian D 12:08:51 PM
How are you Jerry?
Brian D 12:09:58 PM
there's that bird....
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:11:05 PM
I'm good, Brian. I'm enthused about this show, particularly Jerry's Room today.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:11:43 PM
I'm glad the weekend is here
Brian D 12:14:16 PM
Yess me too! 60s 70s British Blues sign me up
Brian D 12:15:04 PM
Peter Gunn arranged interestingly
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:15:45 PM
Brian, is that picture of you current? You've got the 60s, 70s look!
Brian D 12:19:35 PM
About 5 to 10 years ago
Brian D 12:21:25 PM
Strangely reminds me of Frank Zappa's pose / expression on You Are What You Is LP. But to totally accidental
Christine Duffy 12:21:29 PM
Hi DJ Jerry! 👋 Hi chat peeps *waves*
Christine Duffy 12:22:12 PM
British Blues 🇬🇧 🎸 YES!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:21:55 PM
Hi Christine!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:25:53 PM
Christine, did you see the article about Tired Hand's IPA as being chosen the best in PA?
Brian D 12:28:40 PM
I'll drink to that! I'm going to the distributor tonight. Have to pick some up
Brian D 12:30:35 PM
Oh they have quite a few I see. I recognize the can now
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:30:24 PM
Brian, it's called Alien Church
Brian D 12:31:23 PM
Love the name. Sold!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:30:57 PM
the one that won the award. There is an article in "Patch" about it
Brian D 12:32:49 PM
Hop Hands by them sounds good too
Christine Duffy 12:34:19 PM
I am both very happy for them as well as wanting to BE THERE. I miss Tired Hands & the Fermentarium.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:34:25 PM
It is a fun place to go, too.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:35:07 PM
They are different than a regular brew pub
jimbeaux 12:36:06 PM
hello jerry's anteroom! happy to hang out in the jazz hallway until 2 :)
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:35:50 PM
Hey Jimbeaux, how are you?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:36:18 PM
Is that a tomato you grew?
jimbeaux 12:37:01 PM
super! happy it's friday and that there's some beer talk!
kentman 12:36:43 PM
jerry, can I ask what year you shut down on 3rd st, I can remember going thru LPs listening to some mind-blowing jazz loud
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:36:52 PM
Yes, Tired Hands in Ardmore.
jimbeaux 12:37:51 PM
yep, I grew it a few years ago. big one!
Brian D 12:37:53 PM
Free Will in Perkasie has some great events with food trucks etc. Sour Sundays. Hope that returns
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:37:19 PM
Hi Kentman!
kentman 12:37:45 PM
been a fan for years
jimbeaux 12:39:17 PM
i miss 3rd st too :)
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:38:53 PM
I started the store in 1972 and sold it in 1989. The new buyer continued it in the original location for awhile and then moved it down the street. It was open approx. 5 years after I sold it in '89.
kentman 12:39:15 PM
a great oasis for progressive types back in the day
Brian D 12:40:20 PM
Cloudy With a Chance of Charcuterie is one of Free Will's best. They run out of that quickly
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:40:41 PM
Thank you, Kentman. I had a couple kids, had been doing it for a long time, and at 38 I was looking to use a different side of my brain.
kentman 12:42:04 PM
I prowled your inventory 1978-1983, then got into Mozart operas
jimbeaux 12:43:07 PM
so glad you shifted gears to Evidence and the Sun Ra reissues!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:43:09 PM
I miss the good times, and deeply believed in what I was doing. Kentman, sorry I couldn't help you there! Where did you go to buy classical?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:43:23 PM
And thank you, Jimbeaux.
kentman 12:43:34 PM
the old Tower on South st
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:43:53 PM
I figured.
Brian D 12:44:39 PM
Arkestra has a recent release I hear
jimbeaux 12:45:28 PM
it is excellent...double LP that revisits some classics. good feel for their live shows of past few years. just got it on gold vinyl!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:44:51 PM
Yes, very good. But very quietly, old Ra releases are being issued. Unfortunately, not by me!
Brian D 12:46:41 PM
Yes I keep seeing those pop up lately
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:46:10 PM
I would still be issuing CDs if the bottom hadn't fallen out of the market.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:46:59 PM
I have already planned on opening up next weeks show with one of them.
jimbeaux 12:47:48 PM
Also got Crystal Spears, which was shelved by Impulse at the time. Trying to get rid of vinyl, but had to make an exception.
kentman 12:48:08 PM
I bought 'Lanquidy' on Cd thru internet
jimbeaux 12:48:55 PM
that's a good one kentman!
kentman 12:49:28 PM
it's in my car ready to go
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:49:13 PM
I issued Crystal Spears on Evidence, and mixed it down from a bizarre QUAD recording. I issued it with another Ra recording. Jimbeaux, did they issue Crystal Spears on vinyl?
jimbeaux 12:50:58 PM
yep, on Modern Harmonic
kentman 12:51:18 PM
first heard Sun Ra at Temple U. live
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:52:34 PM
I issued Lanquidity on CD also, licensing it from a friend in Philly who was once associated with WXPN. A special album!
dhingston 12:54:21 PM
I think I first saw Sun Ra at the Palestra. It was so smoky I could hardly see the stage from my balcony seat.
jimbeaux 12:55:18 PM
I used to live in the Arkestra's neighborhood and I would check out their LPs from the nearby public library.
kentman 12:55:47 PM
the whole stage was full of musicians, at one point it seemed the stage was throbbing
kentman 12:56:40 PM
with interstellar peace, maybe
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:56:44 PM
Hi dhingston!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:57:32 PM
Some great memories from you guys. Nice to know that Cuckoo listeners are Ra listeners.
kentman 12:59:05 PM
and Roland Kirk, thanks you jerry
Christine Duffy 1:00:07 PM
Nice station ID there. Groovy.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:01:24 PM
Haha!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:03:22 PM
Thanks, Kentman.
kentman 1:04:45 PM
that intensity coming thru is what we all miss live
Bud Burroughs 1:08:49 PM
The Arkestra seems to be reaching more new fans all the time. Between all the fantastic reissues, and the still-incendiary live shows they may end up more popular than ever!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:11:28 PM
Yes, that immediacy and introduction to a new language: exhilarating and intoxicating. Hi, Bud!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:12:18 PM
Yes, Kentman, good one, intensity! Absolutely! Good observations from Bud and Kentman.
Bud Burroughs 1:13:48 PM
And this track is really making me wish Mingus had lived longer so I could have experienced his band live...
Mark 1:13:58 PM
Hi Jerry as always a fantastic soundtrack to my outdoor urban hike today!;)
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:14:46 PM
Hey, Mark, you made it! Nice weather for you today!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:16:14 PM
Can you reveal your 10-20?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:17:18 PM
Bud, this box set also has music from 11 years before which features Eric Dolphy and Clifford Jordan. Even more bombastic and important.
Mark 1:17:31 PM
HAha center city walked past South and Chris Jazz
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:18:12 PM
What is your destination?
Mark 1:18:29 PM
Wanted to see how it looked like doing / everyone suppprt these locales when they open again !!
kentman 1:19:10 PM
Mark you up in my territory Bucks County?
Mark 1:19:57 PM
@kent sometimes bucks or montco or center city Orr jersey / kinda get around
kentman 1:22:04 PM
no where to walk in Bucks except for crowded parks, though Washington Crossing park has become a favorite of late
Mark 1:22:52 PM
Love Washington crossing its my entry point to the canal trail to bike :)
Christine Duffy 1:24:03 PM
In Bucks County, Core Creek Park is an overlooked gem.
kentman 1:24:50 PM
the Jersey side of the river pretty cool too but the hills must be a nightmare to bike
Christine Duffy 1:24:46 PM
The hills are our friends; they help us get in shape. Or that's what I tell myself.
kentman 1:25:52 PM
was at Core Creek last summer, has its own feral cat colony well looked after
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:25:43 PM
I'm glad everyone here is staying in better shape than me.
Brian D 1:26:10 PM
Spent many a fun day at Core Creek as a kid in 70s 80s
Brian D 1:27:05 PM
Lately I have been doing walking in place workouts at home
Mark 1:28:00 PM
@chris thanks 4 the recommendation.i gotta check it out
kentman 1:28:07 PM
Jerry, as long as you can spin records you'll be in shape
Brian D 1:28:52 PM
Shhh there are parts of Nockamixon park that may be closed to cars but you can walk to them from the marina parking lot that is open to cars. Not too crowded
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:29:32 PM
Haha, Kentman, thanks
Brian D 1:30:14 PM
That Coleman was nice
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:32:51 PM
Yeah, man!
Christine Duffy 1:33:32 PM
See, this is why I love Serenade. Every week it's an education. Thanks, DJ Jerry.
kentman 1:34:38 PM
Friday lineup on WBRB is what kicks off the weekend for me
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:34:52 PM
Thanks, Christine, very much. Cal Massey, a revered Philadelphia historical and cultural figure.
kentman 1:37:17 PM
good thing I'm not driving while listening today,I'd have to pull over during every track
Patrick Blanco 1:37:20 PM
Hello Jerry just saw Mingus on TV on the CNN Jimmy Carter show.a President with good taste in music
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:38:25 PM
Hey Patrick! Dizzy Gillespie, as you probably remember, got Jimmy Carter to sing Salt Peanuts. Ha!!!!!!!!!!!!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:39:02 PM
How are you, Patrick? What Mingus was on CNN?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:48:19 PM
It doesn't matter who plays this composition, it always sounds great.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:49:09 PM
Written by the excellent pianist Jimmy Rowles, this composition "stuck" and is performed by many.
Patrick Blanco 1:50:03 PM
Yes they had a Jimmy Carter rock n roll president special but a lot of it was Jazz peopke.they showed the Salt Peanut performance.
Brian D 1:50:30 PM
I think I've heard the Dizzy/Jimmy duet on prb before! You and or Will C played it no doubt
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:52:35 PM
I'd love to experience that again. It showed Dizzy was crazy and President Carter was cooperative.
kentman 1:54:09 PM
Dizzy did a lot of acid in the 60's but could still play
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:55:23 PM
I did not know that, Johnny!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:56:22 PM
Reverent Duke Ellington music performed by Eric Reed
Brian D 1:57:07 PM
Swing low sweet Cadillac is a great prb memory. Marvin Bradshaw Sunday mornings. Miss him
Bud Burroughs 1:58:11 PM
Marvin Bradshaw was fantastic. I loved waiting to see if he would remember to turn his mic on before speaking every week :)
Brian D 2:00:49 PM
Yes! I can still hear that pause... "O... Kay..."
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:01:37 PM
That is at least 12 years ago
Brian D 2:01:15 PM
Is it that long.... wow
Bud Burroughs 2:01:30 PM
Seriously? Wow, I would have said 5 or 6 years!
Bud Burroughs 2:02:06 PM
Every show started with Miles Davis' "Walkin'"
Brian D 2:03:06 PM
He'd play a whole side of a Sinatra lp with Rose Colored Glasses . Played a GREAT funky Charles Earland lp once Ready n Able. Can't find it
Brian D 2:03:19 PM
Yup. Walkin.
Brian D 2:06:40 PM
Walkin has a musical quote in the piano solo... ....? Heard that every Sunday
Bud Burroughs 2:07:31 PM
Yeah, you're right - what was it, though? I can almost hear it...
Brian D 2:09:21 PM
Wish Upon a Star maybe....?
Bud Burroughs 2:10:13 PM
Yep, I think that's it!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:11:11 PM
You gys are good!
Brian D 2:10:38 PM
And someone quotes the bluesy arranged melody to You Are my Sunshine... I think
Brian D 2:10:59 PM
Not the usual one
Bud Burroughs 2:11:06 PM
Not sure I noticed that.
Brian D 2:12:10 PM
It's a snippet
Bud Burroughs 2:12:20 PM
And that fantastic Mick Abraham/Blodwyn Pig track brings the show full circle for me - my first exposure to the song "Serenade to a Cuckoo" was on the first Jethro Tull album.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:13:13 PM
Me too!
Bud Burroughs 2:13:30 PM
It was Ian Anderson's effusive praise that made me look into Roland Kirk.
Bud Burroughs 2:14:03 PM
By the way, there's an excellent Kirk documentary on Amazon Prime with lots of performance footage.
Brian D 2:14:46 PM
I always say "The Blues has a lot of stickers on its suitcase and stamps in its passport" . It took England and Euro bands to cover blues songs THEN young US musicians heard THOSE versions and covered those arrangements
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:16:14 PM
Thanks, Bud.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:17:01 PM
Van Morrison. What a guy!
Brian D 2:16:39 PM
Those English guitar players ALL were obsessed with US blues records. Went to great trouble to get their hands on them
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:17:59 PM
Jeff Beck here
Brian D 2:18:11 PM
That Blodwyn was great!
Brian D 2:18:30 PM
Jeff B singing eh Jerry?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:19:18 PM
remastered, opened up
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:20:12 PM
no, just guitar
kentman 2:21:17 PM
know someone who saw Van Morrison live, said he refused to any encores
Brian D 2:21:37 PM
Ahh Bowie covered this
Bud Burroughs 2:22:22 PM
A couple people I know who worked with Van Morrison have described him as an intolerable jerk. But he made some great records!
Christine Duffy 2:21:44 PM
*soaks up the healing vibes*
kentman 2:25:19 PM
great choice Jerry, played this LP to death
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:25:55 PM
I saw a documentary about the blues in UK and it had a bunch of people we dig performing with eachother, one was Van Morrison. Another was Tom Jones, and in the video he is singling the blues. I loved it. Van Morrison was great too
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:26:10 PM
This will surprise right here!
Brian D 2:26:45 PM
Good books : 'Astral Weeks' (not just about that album but it does figure) and the book on Ted Templeman by Greg Renoff. Both have good Van M info
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:27:48 PM
Thanks, Brian
kentman 2:28:28 PM
Astral Weeks is a masterpiece, one for the ages
Brian D 2:28:21 PM
Astral Weeks a Secret History of 1968 by Ryan Walsh
Brian D 2:29:29 PM
And also by Greg Renoff a book on another Van.. Halen. Great read. And Ted T figures in that work as well
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:30:32 PM
Brian, I just looked up Ted Templeman. I am embarrassed to say I didn't know who he was. You taught me something, thank you.
Bud Burroughs 2:31:57 PM
Wow, I'd forgotten that Procol Harum ever got this bluesy!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:34:56 PM
John Mayall when Mick Taylor was his guitarist
Shane Navoy 2:35:52 PM
Hi there, Jerry. Thanks for that Procol Harum. I only really heard... what, like their two famous songs. That guitarist kicked my ass.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:36:54 PM
Hey Shane! Robin Trower!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:37:14 PM
How are you making out in the real world?
kentman 2:39:56 PM
Brian D, headed to Thriftbooks.com after the show to see if I can find that book
Brian D 2:41:51 PM
That's great!
Shane Navoy 2:43:47 PM
Oh... OK, I guess. (regarding health, etc.)--Oh, OK... I don't have any Trower. I couldn't place that tone/timbre and those awesome bends and vibrato.
Brian D 2:43:25 PM
I always saw Ted's name on LPs. But never knew his back story like being a member of Harper's Bizarre
Brian D 2:44:05 PM
Peter Green I bow down... love that guy
Shane Navoy 2:44:45 PM
On a Jazz tangent, Jerry... it seems as if Bobby Few has moved on to a different plane.
kentman 2:44:56 PM
think Trower was in a trio with Jack Bruce
Brian D 2:44:50 PM
That delicious sandwich LP cover. BLT
kentman 2:46:47 PM
that's it
jimbeaux 2:49:23 PM
thx for the tunes & hangout, Jerry & the Jazz Roomies!
dhingston 2:49:45 PM
Great show, Jerry! Thanks--You guys ad to my Get List every week!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:50:38 PM
Thanks for that information, Shane. Hadn't heard about bobby Few. Glad you're well.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:54:12 PM
Good to hear DH. Thanks Jimbeaux. Thanks Brian D, Kentman, the famous Christine, Bud, Mark, Patrick! I appreciate you all, thanks for your presence and support of the show.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:55:07 PM
Christine McVie when she was Christine Perfect
Christine Duffy 2:55:38 PM
Thanks for a fantastic show, Jerry. Incredible set of British Blues today!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:56:16 PM
Thank you, Christine.
Brian D 2:56:12 PM
Great show Jerry!
kentman 2:57:08 PM
sending us all home wiser, thanks Jerry
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:57:27 PM
Thanks, Brian. I want those books now too!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:58:06 PM
Thanks, Kentman
