Good afternoon, everyone!
Patrick Ganley 12:02:42 PM
Good afternoon, Jerry!
Patrick Ganley 12:03:21 PM
You know, when push comes to shove Lanquidity might be my favorite Sun Ra LP.
Christine Duffy 12:03:58 PM
Hi DJ Jerry! 👋 Already the day is better....
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:04:09 PM
Hi Patrick. There are other people that feel that way. How old are you, may I ask?
Christine Duffy 12:04:12 PM
Hey, DJ Pat 👋
Patrick Ganley 12:04:22 PM
It's the one to I tell folks who aren't familiar with Sun Ra to start with, though I'm not actually sure it's really the best place to start
Patrick Ganley 12:04:38 PM
I'm 38
Patrick Ganley 12:04:48 PM
Hi Christine!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:04:48 PM
Haha, hi Christine!
Brian D 12:05:00 PM
Morning Jerry & all. Sounds great
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:05:16 PM
Patrick, I asked you for a reason. Hi Brian D, thanks for being back.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:06:25 PM
Patrick, because I am older, I have gravitated to Ra's earlier works, people younger than me relate to the hipness of Lanquidity. I can truly appreciate your perspective, it's a killer!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:08:28 PM
You will hear me make a comment in about 10 minutes that Ra used ideas from the late 70s music on his albums of that time. I know the band enjoyed it, I'm sure Ra enjoyed doing it. music for people to relate to right there. The genius of RA
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:08:51 PM
Christine, Brian, what's going on?
Patrick Ganley 12:08:53 PM
There are certainly gems from all the decades, but yeah the late 60s through to th end of the 70s is my personal Sun Ra sweet spot
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:09:42 PM
Right on, Patrick!
Brian D 12:12:56 PM
Just enjoying how Friday is getting better as the Ra sounds help when doing boring data entry and spreadsheets
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:15:24 PM
Glad to help, Brian
Christine Duffy 12:16:36 PM
Let's all join Ra on Jupiter. 🚀 I'm tempted.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:19:23 PM
Next up there will be a rocket taking off for venus
Christine Duffy 12:20:55 PM
Sign us up! Space is the place.
Brian D 12:30:11 PM
Classic!
Brian D 12:30:37 PM
NRBQ does a fine job on this
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:31:50 PM
Right on, Brian
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:32:13 PM
That makes you old or very knowledgeable
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:34:22 PM
Ha, Christine! Space is the Place, should be the national anthem.
Brian D 12:35:05 PM
Medium old. 51
Brian D 12:35:51 PM
But music trivia sticks to a flypaper section of my brain
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:36:35 PM
At 51, I'm kind of surprised you know the NRBQ version
Brian D 12:36:50 PM
Is Sun Ra on those "how do you know I'm real....?" WPRB staion ids?
Brian D 12:38:13 PM
Ya love NRBQ and there whole throw it at the wall crazy approach to live performance. But I found out about them way too late
Brian D 12:38:22 PM
Their
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:40:21 PM
Yes, that is Ra from one of his albums. NRBQ shared a touring agent with Ra. Were big supporters of Ra.
Brian D 12:42:41 PM
O yeah and the... I am the alter destiny the presence of the living myth.... that ID too
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:47:16 PM
I take credit for that ID. I put together the motion picture soundtrack recording of Space Is The Place from the reel of the movie. That was an excerpt I liked and put it on the soundtrack. Someone at WPRB made an ID out of it.
Mark 12:48:15 PM
Hi Jerry and the advanced level sun ra chatters I’m still at entry level but love the sound and the Ra education 👨‍🏫
Brian D 12:48:47 PM
It is etched in my brain like many WPRB ids. Was talking to Jetty Factorial about that yesterday
Brian D 12:50:37 PM
Great version of Love Supreme there
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:50:50 PM
Hi Mark! You were very; close to the action, back in the day
Bud Burroughs 12:51:40 PM
Yeah, that was a very cool take on A Love Supreme. I'll have to check out the rest of that.
Mark 12:52:19 PM
Haha I still want to hear vivid detail of his St Mary church concerts :)
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:52:20 PM
Hey Bud, the album is a killer
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:54:36 PM
two of my most memorable concerts of my life at Penn. Ra was one, the other one was Big Brother & the Soul Survivors
Mark 12:55:07 PM
Locked in to the stream for the next two hours w a fully charged battery! Looking forward to psychedelia
Mark 12:55:40 PM
Big brother was at Irvine right ?
Bud Burroughs 12:57:26 PM
Jerry, when did you first see Sun Ra? If I could go back in time to attend a concert, 70s Sun Ra would be high on the list.
Brian D 1:00:37 PM
Love that Vazquez ID. Great accent
Brian D 1:03:35 PM
Lineman..
Mark 1:04:33 PM
Fantastic...
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:06:52 PM
Big Brother was at Irvine, I had a friend who won tickets on WFIL for the show. We had a bet. He insister that the Soul Survivors were the headliners. I said they weren't. He lost, and had to take me to the show for free.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:08:26 PM
My Ra show was in Gino's Empty Foxhole in St. Mary's Church in 1972. It was the single greatest show I ever attended. They were performing music from My Brother the Wind Vol. 2, my favorite Ra album (as a result of that show)
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:08:45 PM
I saw and heard things I never experienced before.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:10:07 PM
And like many other people in this world, I saw Ra lead everyone attending one of his concerts out of the venue like the pied piper and then back to their seats. For real, for real.
Bud Burroughs 1:10:26 PM
Sounds like an amazing experience!
jimbeaux 1:11:00 PM
Quick hello, folks! Ra! Ra! Ra! Listening sporadically while outside working.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:11:33 PM
The light show at St. Mary's Church, off the matrix.
Mark 1:11:56 PM
Wow where were the camera phones when we really needed them :)
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:12:15 PM
Hey JimBeaux, thanks for being here.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:13:13 PM
Let's put it this way, at St. Mary's Church I saw Sun Ra and June tyson flying around in space with butterfly wings. Yes, they did.
Brian D 1:13:27 PM
I can remember a friend's older brother answering the phone "WFIL is my favorite radio station " back in the 70s. Contest/prize offer they had
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:13:36 PM
Ra put his head through a hole in space. Yes he did.
Bud Burroughs 1:23:44 PM
I love an artist who can turn a live performance into a real "event"
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:23:57 PM
This is an overlooked album, although everything is overlooked.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:24:59 PM
Bud, you are right. Ra went all the way back to the vaudeville era. He used to play p iano at movie theaters!
Bud Burroughs 1:25:50 PM
Oh yeah, I'd forgotten about that!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:25:50 PM
Mark, where are you hiking today?
Bud Burroughs 1:26:36 PM
Man, I love John Medeski.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:28:16 PM
Yeah, Bud!
Mark 1:35:11 PM
Haha Jerry ya got me pegged / had to take advantage of 50 degree & biking an unopened stretch of penny pack trail
Mark 1:36:30 PM
Technically trespassing so don’t tell anyone :)
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:40:57 PM
What a day! Junior escaped his fenced in back yard, he was so into the weather!
Christine Duffy 1:43:03 PM
@Mark, it's only trespassing if someone else catches you. But then you have to ask them, "What are YOU doing here?"
Mark 1:44:36 PM
Haha sometimes the construction guys give a hard time but there’s a fair amount of other people jumping the gun on this trail section ! :)
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:46:11 PM
Just don't stop!
Brian D 1:48:55 PM
Woody Guthrie said the sign said No Trespassing. But the other side of the sign didn't say anything. This land was made for you and me.
Bud Burroughs 1:51:25 PM
I'm really loving that Mary Halvorson record. And it even feature Robert Wyatt singing on a bunch of tracks!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:58:46 PM
Funny, Brian! Yeah Bud, a strong CD
Brian D 2:08:10 PM
My favorite Woody lyric ever. This and Children of the Future are great Steve Miller lps. Anyone not into Steve's 70s stuff should check these out
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:20:14 PM
This is a good one for headphones
Christine Duffy 2:27:01 PM
Our souls are gettin' psychedelisized! ✌💜
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:27:28 PM
I'm tryin'
Mark 2:31:47 PM
Haha I just got scolded by a construction foreman / told shouldn’t be on a work in process trail / for my own safety:)
Mark 2:32:53 PM
This is when i really need jerrys room: no parents teachers or cops or mean people! :)
Christine Duffy 2:33:18 PM
@Mark, I guess no one escapes unscathed. 😃
Mark 2:33:31 PM
lol 😆
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:33:33 PM
Yeah, Mark, I'm wondering how he cared about you and how much of that was to wield power
Mark 2:34:24 PM
We all remember how our elders scolded us for our own benefit :)
Mark 2:35:13 PM
This music tho takes us all back to being a kid again / thanks !!
Brian D 2:37:17 PM
Great selections Jerry
Bud Burroughs 2:38:36 PM
If you're into obscure 60s psychedlia, check out Psychedelic Archaeology, an "unofficial" 10-CD anthology of tracks that have mostly been out of print for decades.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:40:27 PM
Thanks, guys. Bud, I will look that up at discogs. Do you actually have it?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:41:13 PM
Mark, he may have noticed you weren't a kid. What kind of work are they doing there?
Bud Burroughs 2:41:32 PM
I do - it's only available as a download due to its semi-bootleg status, although it does show up on discogs. I think it's also available on YouTube.

Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:45:10 PM

Bud Burroughs 2:45:32 PM
There are very few bands on that comp that I'd even heard of before!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:46:56 PM
On this volume one whose link is below, I only heard of 3 of 24 bands
Christine Duffy 2:51:14 PM
What a uplifting and groovy show. Thanks, DJ Jerry!
Mark 2:51:30 PM
They’re completing the 2.5 mile stretch of rail to trail it won’t be open until late spring but it’s gonna b pretty great
Mark 2:52:44 PM
Like this show / cant wait for the mixcloud late nite relisten w candles & incense :)
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:53:16 PM
