Richard from Rocky Hill 12:43:12 PM
HI S.B.IIIrd -- Trixie Smith "Freight Train Blues" was an especially wonderful selection. Do you have info about the outstanding early jazz combo backing her?
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 12:45:50 PM
Hi Richard! It's very frustrating, but during these remote broadcasts I'm relying on digital files and often lack access to good liner notes.
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 12:46:12 PM
I was curious too and found this on the allmusic.com review of the CD: " The 1938 set matches Trixie with the fiery young trumpeter Charlie Shavers, a restrained Sidney Bechet on soprano, and a four-piece rhythm section. Although she had not recorded in a dozen years, Trixie Smith is in prime form on such numbers as "Freight Train Blues," two versions of "My Daddy Rocks Me" and "He May Be Your Man (But He Comes to See Me Sometime)."
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 12:47:01 PM
This is also usefully corroborated by a DRAM entry! https://adp.library.ucsb.edu/index.php/matrix/detail/2000291979/63866-Freight_train_blues
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 12:47:25 PM
Curiously Sidney Bechet is credited with both Clarinet and Soprano sax...
Richard from Rocky Hill 12:47:54 PM
Thanks! You manage to be amazingly informative even from remote.
Richard from Rocky Hill 12:49:20 PM
Well well, Sidney Bechet on that session! I'll give my ear a little credit for hearing that it was some truly exceptional playing, hence my inquiry.
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 12:49:49 PM
As well you should!
Richard from Rocky Hill 12:52:10 PM
Yes, it can be confusing when session players are credited with two or more instruments. It's often true, but which "axe" on which cut? That's where we must be grateful to discographer-researchers who manage to uncover the details of classic roots music sessions.
Richard from Rocky Hill 12:59:57 PM
That Big Maybelle recording was PRICELESS !!! I swear, it's one of the greatest KILLER R&B tracks I've EVER heard. The lyrics, the arrangement, and especially how she starts off the verses softly and coyly, then winds up and socks it at the end. All I can say is, Yougogirl! :-))
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 1:03:59 PM
Glad you enjoyed it as much as I did!
Elliot 1:17:13 PM
Ha! I had no idea 'Iz U' by Nelly had a predecessor
Richard from Rocky Hill 1:18:50 PM
Ditto the personnel behind the fab Dinah Washington now. It's an arrangement and studio orchestra worthy of Nelson Riddle's work on the famed Frank Sinatra come-back recording sessions of the 1950s.
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 1:19:04 PM
This is the second time in the past few weeks that my ignorance of Nelly has become and obvious gap in my early 2000s cultural knowledge!
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 1:21:59 PM
Richard -- the album is Dinah '62. I'm looking for the credits!
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 1:24:30 PM
It seems like Fred Norman was responsible for the arrangements: https://www.allmusic.com/artist/fred-norman-mn0000141772/biography
Elliot 1:24:37 PM
Nelly is my high school's most famous alumnus, and it took me years to learn that the rest of the world didn
Elliot 1:24:44 PM
't care about him as much as we did
Richard from Rocky Hill 1:25:16 PM
Thanks, SB IIIrd, you're the man!
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 1:25:16 PM
Mine is Andy Milonakis. Ditto?
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 1:26:35 PM
And you're welcome Richard!
Richard from Rocky Hill 1:27:55 PM
Thanks, Elliot, for the Nelly info. I need a lot more education on rap and who the greatest rappers are right now.
Brian D 1:30:15 PM
Love the many Hesitations
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 1:31:43 PM
Thanks Brian! A few more coming...
Brian D 1:41:41 PM
Re the opening comments: I heard the other Freight Train on Weird Old America (E Cotten) and went down a lil online sheet music rabbit hole playing diff versions on my gtr.
Brian D 1:42:37 PM
And then.. . Your show started...
Brian D 1:43:19 PM
One o those moments
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 1:44:23 PM
Elizabeth Cotten almost didn't get credit for that song!
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 1:45:32 PM
She says she wrote in in the 1910s. She never recorded anything back then and more or less gave up performing. She was a nanny in the Seeger family. Peggy Seeger took the song to England, where it was stolen and made into a skiffle hit.
Brian D 1:47:06 PM
First heard Hesitation Blues by Hot Tuna (Jorma). First heard River Was Whiskey... lyric as Diving Duck Blues by Taj Mahal. Those guys like many are the gateway into Folk Blues. Then I heard so many variations of them by others
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 1:47:26 PM
The Seeger family, who later recorded Elizabeth, helped restore the copyright to her.
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 1:48:06 PM
My big gateways to this material were Bob Dylan and Led Zeppelin, but I love Taj and Jorma too!
Brian D 1:52:19 PM
Yes that Cotten Seeger connection is something. That whole revival period where older musicians got a new chapter of their career late in life. Festival appearances, new LPs, young audience etc
Brian D 1:59:11 PM
Elizabeth's O Babe It Ain't No Lie (my gateway was Grateful Dead). That lyric is so gentle sounding out of her mouth. But it's pretty intense! And I understand she wrote it very young or based it on childhood about an old woman in the neighborhood that treated her badly.
Brian D 2:00:33 PM
And then that leads me to Louis Collins... ah so many great tunes
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 2:02:35 PM
:)
Richard from Rocky Hill 2:07:51 PM
If you want an excellent account of the Folk Revival and its renewal of the careers of great African American blues and gospel stars of the 1920s & '30s (also white old-timey and "hillbilly" performers), check out Baby Let Me Follow You Down: The Illustrated Story of the Cambridge Folk Years by Eric von Schmidt & Jim Rooney. It focuses on the Cambridge-Boston scene (local stars like Joan Baez) but has lots on the nearby Newport (Rhode Island) Folk Festival, Seegers, Libba Cotten, etc.
Brian D 2:08:50 PM
Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby - my gateway was also cartoons! Thank you for the book rec Richard from RH!
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 2:10:19 PM
Thanks for the recommendation Richard! I know the von Schmidt name from Bob Dylan who credits him on his first album with teaching him "Baby, Let Me Follow You Down" in the "green pastures of Harvard University." I did my undergrad degree there -- Club Passim, a hub of that scene, still operates (or did before the pandemic at least!)
Brian D 2:10:39 PM
First thing I thought of too Sonny Boy about Dylan/Eric (aka Ric)
Brian D 2:12:11 PM
Wow expensive book on the resale market!
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 2:12:51 PM
Someone should do a reprint!
Brian D 2:13:03 PM
Ahh the mando... nice in there
Richard from Rocky Hill 2:13:40 PM
Thanks, Brian D. These modern gateways ARE important! Bob Dylan, for example, has been very happy about being a gateway to Woody Guthrie, the Carter Family and lots of general "roots" American music for younger listeners.
Elliot 2:20:23 PM
Question from ignorance here: are the bass sounds in these recordings made by deep-voiced singers with kazoos?
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 2:20:43 PM
I think they are jugs!
Brian D 2:20:50 PM
More Mando!
Elliot 2:21:12 PM
ah, of course! that's much easier to visualize
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 2:21:16 PM
But I'll picture them as bass kazoo from now on
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 2:25:50 PM
Now this.... is a kazoo i think?
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 2:26:56 PM
(on "Macon Georgia Cut Out")
Elliot 2:27:07 PM
Just in time! Those chord changes were begging for a kazoo solo
Richard from Rocky Hill 2:30:58 PM
YIKES! I just checked out book sales outlets for Baby Let Me Follow You Down ... Talk about sticker shock! :-0 I'm going to guard my copy with an advanced security system, savage guard dog, spiked-wood pitfalls, etc. etc. ;-))
Richard from Rocky Hill 2:31:28 PM
But there are some fairly inexpensive used copies for sale ...
Brian D 2:34:35 PM
Great widely used melody on this one (2:32 pm)
Brian D 2:34:47 PM
From Four Until Late is one
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 2:35:18 PM
You've anticipated me, Brian.
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 2:35:41 PM
Four Until Late up next
Brian D 2:35:48 PM
oops... spoiler alert haha
David Shortell 2:47:35 PM
I saw Thee Headcoats sing "John the Revelator" (sans instrumentation, like this Son House version) in their final New York show.
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 2:49:28 PM
Very cool!
Brian D 2:56:39 PM
Good day all
Sonny Boy Williamson III (host) 2:57:42 PM
Good day Brian!
Richard from Rocky Hill 2:58:09 PM
Lots of music business for us all yet to do -- great weekend, all!
Richard from Rocky Hill 2:58:36 PM
And thanks so much SBW IIIrd!
