The New Abnormal

Jan 27, 2021 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Thank you, David Darling (4 March 1941 – 8 January 2021)

Sometimes you hear a voice through the door calling you,
as fish out of water hear the waves,
or a hunting falcon hears the drums.
Come back. Come back.
This turning toward what you deeply love saves you.

I'm enjoying the David Darling commentary - don't think I've ever heard him speak before.
the_dude 10:27:12 AM
Keep pushing - The call of the void is strong
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 10:27:18 AM
There are a couple of short interviews out there. And this track even has him singing.
the_dude 10:28:31 AM
The void is where I imagine a band like Khanate plays from, was so cool to hear them on the sprawl the other week
Irene Trudel 10:29:21 AM
Just stumbled across your tribute to Dave Darling. I've been a big fan of his music for a very long time. So glad you're doing this. Nice to hear the interview snippets. Will the show be archived?
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 10:30:37 AM
Thanks, Irene. I have not been archiving any of my shows beyond my own backup drive.
Irene Trudel 10:31:15 AM
And that's David Darling (durned auto-fill)
Irene Trudel 10:32:10 AM
Too bad about the archive. Gotta get to work shortly, so I won't be able to listen much longer. :(
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 10:32:43 AM
Thanks for stopping by. Glad you're enjoying the music.
the_dude 10:36:41 AM
I would listen to your shows on SoundCloud/mixcloud if you ever upload them... sure it's more work and you already put a lot into this I'm sure
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 10:38:17 AM
Yeah, my lack of internet footprint is part of what makes me Dave the Obscure.
the_dude 10:39:03 AM
And I was unfamiliar with David Darling before this show but am enjoying this tribute very much - and I get that, you do you, it's what I'm here for
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 10:55:42 AM
Oh, thanks, Bud, for bringing the Ken Ulansey track to my attention.
Bud Burroughs 10:58:18 AM
Cool, I'll have to tell Ken you played it!
Mark 11:03:04 AM
I’m another who likes this tribute ; Also wasn’t familiar
Irene Trudel 11:03:58 AM
I have many of these albums but you're playing a few I don't have. Thanks for that! Just discovered the Cycles album, which is also quite beautiful.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 11:04:41 AM
Yes, Irene. Jerry Gordon aired some of Cycles a week ago.
Mark 11:04:48 AM
Also I’d relisten to TNA if u ever archive to mixcloud :)
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 11:04:54 AM
I couldn't get to all of his music.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 11:05:50 AM
Cello isn't exactly a sexy lead instrument, so David Darling never stood out in the field of musicians.
Irene Trudel 11:06:10 AM
Understandable, Dave. He has so many great ones to choose from. Glad you fit in the Wulu Bunun!
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 11:06:40 AM
And, okay, where's Krista? This Wulu Bunun track is one I picked especially for her.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 11:09:22 AM
The Bunun tribe from Taiwan have an unusual polyphonic choral music.
Irene Trudel 11:13:55 AM
Thank you for this David Darling tribute!
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 11:15:50 AM
So glad you enjoyed the tribute!
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 11:16:27 AM
I said Chien Chien Lu was from China, but she is actually from Taiwan.
Irene Trudel 11:16:39 AM
First time I'm hearing your show too. I must come back again next week.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 11:17:10 AM
Thanks, Irene. That reminds me. I need to announce that this is the last week of WPRB's winter schedule.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 11:17:44 AM
New schedule starts Monday February 1st. They have not announced the new schedule yet.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 11:18:30 AM
I may be in a new time slot, or I may be sent back to the minors with no regular show.
Irene Trudel 11:19:07 AM
You'll be back on it? You play the kind of music I really love.
Bud Burroughs 11:19:11 AM
Hoping you keep the same slot - I've gotten used to Wednesday mornings!
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 11:20:41 AM
It is unlikely that I'll be on Wednesdays. But WPRB boasts a huge staff of great DJs. If I'm not part of the new spring schedule, there's sure to be another great show instead.
the_dude 11:22:30 AM
Me too! Of course there are a lot of great djs but you have made me look forward to my Wednesday morning s these past few months
the_dude 11:22:52 AM
Still rotating with your alter ego?
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 11:23:34 AM
I would still be on once a month hosting Sangeet.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 11:25:50 AM
The Sangeet playlist, of course, would not be anything like Ṱḩḝ Ṇḙẘ Ḁḅṅṍṛṃḁḻ.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 11:27:01 AM
Keep checking the WPRB website for the updated calendar.
Bud Burroughs 11:42:44 AM
Italian prog is always so dramatic!
Mark 11:44:56 AM
Agreed !
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 11:46:33 AM
Yes, RPI has a sound that distinguished it from the other European prog. Never caught on in the USA, and had been hard to find. That is until the internet (peace be upon it) made so much of it available.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 11:48:44 AM
RPI is largely an outgrowth of Italy's own dramatic music traditions, while being inspired by England's prog. Here, Genesis is clearly an influence.
Bud Burroughs 11:50:47 AM
Right, I'm not familiar with much of it, but it's always sounded very operatic to me.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 11:52:10 AM
Exactly, Bud. So they weren't just aping English prog, but finding their own voice. It's a wide field of surprisingly advanced prog, its heyday in the early 70s.
Christine Duffy 11:55:28 AM
Hey, DJ Dave 👋 really nice show; I was really digging Chien Chien Lu. She played at the Richardson Auditorium in Princeton a couple years back.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 11:56:10 AM
Hi Christine! I missed that show. I miss just about all shows...
Christine Duffy 11:56:38 AM
LOL. I miss many, many shows myself. I'll be sorry if your show disappears from the schedule for next semester.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 11:57:42 AM
Thanks, Christine. You'll be fine. Plenty to listen to on WPRB.
Mark 11:57:56 AM
Hmmm I caught that lyric ....
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 11:59:17 AM
Thanks for listening, and participating in the chat. Stay tuned to ‘PRB for 3 hours of ᏋᒫĹǐꉩ₮.
