Ohhh Dave. .... this is one of my favorite albums ever!

Brian D 8:42:24 AM
Great fiddle tune on this Big Sciota. one of my faves to play. Traced back to West Virginia maybe from the 1970s? Pretty recent but sounds like from long ago
Christine Duffy 8:42:53 AM
@Brian, now that I know of the MM Film Fest, I need to track down the Ethiopiques film
Brian D 8:43:02 AM
Sam Bush guests on mandolin on that
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 8:44:40 AM
Big Sciota: maybe in a future show. Always room for Jerry Douglas.
Brian D 8:45:54 AM
The Ethiopiques film parallels the history of Addis Ababa and it's change from cultural center and major tourist attraction to it's falling on hard times; the story of the record label that put out the records and an important band of core musicians and their story over the years
Brian D 8:47:15 AM
its not it's
the_dude 8:47:22 AM
You can just tell its les Claypool from the moment you hear him
Brian D 8:47:34 AM

Bass that is
Brian D 8:48:21 AM
I have to relisten to his/ their Charlie and the chocolate factory lp take again
the_dude 8:48:57 AM
Yeah that's a fun listen! Definitely their own, they did a tour of it I missed
Christine Duffy 8:48:59 AM
@Dave the Obscure, is this the beginning of the darker, nightmarish stuff?
Brian D 8:49:35 AM
Ethio doc barely mentions Mulatu Astatke strangely. But don't let that fault it
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 8:49:53 AM
No, Christine, I'm afraid it will become quite dark a little later.
the_dude 8:50:37 AM
Yeah prb introduced Ethiopiques to me, will have to check out film
the_dude 8:51:07 AM
Also learned of Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains, if you want to instantly recognize Claypool again
Brian D 8:53:06 AM
I saw the tour with Primus and Dean (Mickey m) Ween Band opening (w Guy Heller, Dave Dreiwitz et al doing great Bowie covers etc). Primus had stage bookended by HUGE astronauts with holographic floating staring faces. And lots of wacked video. They love treating the live show as a giant trip toy for the fans
Christine Duffy 8:54:09 AM
Duly noted.
the_dude 8:56:12 AM
That sounds very rad
the_dude 8:56:28 AM
Never got to see primus.. one day...
the_dude 8:57:13 AM

Brian D 8:57:44 AM
This is amazing Dave. That gtr tone and the Atari controller bender keys tone
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 8:58:21 AM
@the dude - not sure about the reason for that song title.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 8:59:14 AM
@Brain, Santana had some decent music mixed in with the preachy culty songs.
Brian D 8:59:45 AM
One of the best Zappa song titles "The Secret Carlos Santana Chord Progression".
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 9:01:19 AM
Yes, the intro summed up Zappa's take on Santana's style. And then Zappa's divergent guitar solo. 💛
Brian D 9:02:23 AM
Jerry D performs Ankara to Izmir almost always if he has his eponymous band. Last 5 or more yrs he has been leading a tribute to Flatt & Scruggs called The Earls of Leicester. Going back to roots of sorts
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 9:03:29 AM
@Brain - that's a very cunning pun.
Brian D 9:04:09 AM
Matching period outfits and hats etc... real fun bluegrass Americana show. He'll go backto the experimental stuff one day
Brian D 9:05:09 AM
Yeah I love that band name. People reading the fest program were like lee sess turr? I got it
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 9:07:39 AM
Okay, Christine, a few dark/intense songs ahead.
Brian D 9:07:59 AM
Our camp prank was to sneak older fest programs onto the campsite chairs, tables. They used the same printers font format for 20 yrs or so. Bleary eyed friends would wake up and ask.. that band is here thi ls year?? I missed THAT last night? I thought they broke up....

Mark Montimurro 9:17:24 AM
ha ha ha "new Mark", I noticed there's another Mark, not too many of us out there ... yes, oatmeal is truly the brekkie of titans
Brian D 9:17:55 AM
My young gtr students turned me onto Polyphia and other music like the current track back when I taught last year+. Inspiring stuff. And their ability to play it
Mark Montimurro 9:18:19 AM
And I might add, I've been on other PRB time slot chats, and it's always the nicest people on here, no bickering or dissent, such a pleasure really
Brian D 9:19:25 AM
So I tried to bridge that to the past prog & metal roots and explain the theory (and try to playb along sometimes getting a few phrases ok haha)
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 9:19:26 AM
Yes new Mark, WPRB listeners are the BEST. And so knowledgable, it staggers me.
Mark Montimurro 9:20:23 AM
Well, DTO, you are based in Princeton after all, what did you expect a bunch of pikers?
Christine Duffy 9:20:26 AM
Welcome, new Mark!
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 9:21:26 AM
WPRB are online from all over. MrM is from California. Selecta Jerry brings in listeners from the UK.
Mark Montimurro 9:21:30 AM
Thanks Christine :)
Mark Montimurro 9:22:20 AM
Yah I realize that you guys are global in reach I was just makin' a P.U. reference is all.. smartest town on the Eastern seaboard I do believe...
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 9:23:34 AM
Okay, easing out of the dark music....
the_dude 9:25:36 AM
@ brian sounds like a good lesson, the bridge is very important I was a young metal kid and didn't get deeper into the roots until later
Mark Montimurro 9:26:21 AM
I love Tibbetts, just discovered him last year and I've added all of his material to my streaming library. Brilliant.
the_dude 9:28:02 AM
And yeah, it's a fun crowd here new mark! Try calling that Mr.m by a weird abbreviation of his name and see what he says....and youre in luck Dave plays a lot of tibbetts
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 9:28:07 AM
@Mark, don't get me started on Tibbetts. I am an absolute Tibbetts completist.
the_dude 9:29:33 AM
I'm so glad there's 50% more obscure, really helps with the longer tracks
Mark Montimurro 9:30:30 AM
Hello the_dude! I'm always up for 'bonding' with another Mark ha ha ha... and DTO, sorry didn't mean to push your Tibbetts button.
the_dude 9:44:19 AM
Lol @ the bo bump - and push those buttons 👆🔘 new mark! (If that annoys you please say)
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 9:47:11 AM
Actually, I love to hear that other people appreciate Steve Tibbetts. He is unique.
Bud Burroughs 9:51:02 AM
Unfortunately Friday morning is a time of many meetings for me, so I'm dipping in and out. At least I was here in time for some Zeuhl and Italian prog!
Mark 9:51:57 AM
Haha I leave the chat for awhile to drive & I see I’ve been already replaced :) we’re all hired to b fired. we all especially appreciate a dj who plays steve tibbets
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 9:52:12 AM
Good morning Bud! Friday mornings work better for me, as there is less demand from my work. I'm left mostly alone to chat here.
Bud Burroughs 9:53:01 AM
I may have to try to tweak my schedule!
the_dude 9:53:23 AM
Mark you're still mark to me - and do it bud!
Mark Montimurro 9:55:01 AM
