Dylan (host) 3:00:54 PM
Hey everybody!
Brian D 3:02:46 PM
Hello Dylan. Love your Sat am shows! Welcome to Monday
Dylan (host) 3:03:12 PM
It's good to be nice and awake for once
Richard from Rocky Hill 3:05:13 PM
Yep, we welcome your weirdness to Mondays! :-))
Dylan (host) 3:06:21 PM
Monday is already a chaotic day tbh
Hanna Sz 3:07:19 PM
hellllo
Dylan (host) 3:07:33 PM
How os the blizzard?
Hanna Sz 3:07:45 PM
very snowy
Dylan (host) 3:10:32 PM
Tennessee just has a very cute snow rn.
Brian D 3:11:08 PM
The flake maker is so busy today. I don't know how out can make so many thick flakes for so long
Richard from Rocky Hill 3:11:27 PM
I'm just in from a round of shoveling. I estimate we had 10 inches at least in the Greater Princeton area, mazybe more. Fortunately, it's powdery, fairly easy to shovel, move and toss.
Brian D 3:11:39 PM
*it can
Dylan (host) 3:12:15 PM
In Tennessee 4 inches can cancel school for a week.
Brian D 3:13:15 PM
Those little mini Cat snow plow pod vehicles look like fun. Our condo uses them
Brian D 3:17:40 PM
Sounds like the Shadows. Was this one of their alt names i wonder
Brian D 3:19:43 PM
No Finnish i guess. Very much like Hank Marvins tone
Dylan (host) 3:20:08 PM
Back in 1965, you just changed your band name every week and it didn't matter because there were five bands in your town that played all the same songs.
Brian D 3:20:50 PM
For great Euro instrumental fun check out Messer Chups. Wonderful surfy vampire fun. Like a soundtrack to the best Halloween party. And then some
Brian D 3:23:08 PM
Bass player Zombierella she rocks the Betty Page goes vampire zombie look. But more importantly she is a great musician as well as the stage presence
Dylan (host) 3:23:42 PM
Surf music is like all the things I like about Rockabilly Aesthetics without having to deal with rockabilly
Richard from Rocky Hill 3:24:48 PM
I'm digging on Donovan right now: "Season of the Witch" from what you've tagged as the LP Sunshine Superman "Stereo Special Edition." Yeah, I seem to recall (and it's a lonnngggg time back to recall!) that the album came out in mono or in a kind of fake processed "stereo." But that cut sounds like real deal stereo. Is that the story?
Dylan (host) 3:27:09 PM
Richard I have no idea it's from the edition on Spotify. It's probably a remaster from more recent times.
Dylan (host) 3:29:33 PM
I really need to learn more about Donovan because I mostly know him as the guy who did Season of the Witch, Hurdy Gurdy Man, and the kicked puppy from Dont Look Back
Brian D 3:31:23 PM
Donovan invented sound
Brian D 3:31:52 PM
And shortly thereafter, guitar and Celtic music
Brian D 3:33:10 PM
He also has a nifty song titled I Love My Shirt. Check out the song Barabajagal. Jeff Beck band backing him up
Richard from Rocky Hill 3:33:17 PM
Yes! He was -- and still is -- a specially gifted British singer/songwriter who made a seamless transition from folkie music to early psychedelic music which had wondrous English fairy tale vibes and lots of references to the ocean shore and seabirds.
Dylan (host) 3:34:01 PM
For reference to people in the chat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sqAhF6i9H4
Richard from Rocky Hill 3:34:16 PM
Yeah! Thanks Brian D for the "Barabajagal" with Jeff Beck backup. Excellent!
Brian D 3:34:58 PM
I love him too. The 3 hour documentary is fun. That's where i get the idea for my little hyperbole moments earlier about him. He likes to take a lot o credit
Dylan (host) 3:39:17 PM
Donovan: "We'll there I was, 3 million BC, and I just started banging on the ground and eventually I got an E flat."
Brian D 3:39:45 PM
Yes!
Brian D 3:40:22 PM
This sounds like a time warp. Wynton way to go
Richard from Rocky Hill 3:42:31 PM
I saw Donovan in concert at the Tarrytown (NY) Music Hall in June 2017 when he was touring on the 50th anniversary of his breakthrough hit "Sunshine Superman." he had some problems hitting the highest notes, but his guitar playing was still powerful & impeccable (he was gigging solo, no backup band!). And he had fab stories of the heady Sixties, including giving his good friend Paul McCartney a little help here & there with lyric suggestions for "Yellow Submarine" and others. Check him out more!
Brian D 3:46:20 PM
Yep he invented Paul McCartney too. He mentioned that in the doc
Richard from Rocky Hill 3:48:39 PM
Hahaha! Love it, Brian D!
Dylan (host) 3:49:22 PM
Compare that to the Dont Look Back clip where he plays what Greil Marcus calls "a nice song about being nice" then Bob Dylan completely eviserates him with "Baby Blue" and basically says, "buck up, start writing real songs." Which he eventually did.
Brian D 3:53:15 PM
Love how he was in the beatnik / worker garb one year then boom.... he was a psychedelic painting (Pre Raphaelite attire according to himself)
Richard from Rocky Hill 3:53:34 PM
He sounded sincere about the "Yellow Submarine" assistance. (Dovetailed with an anecdote about Paul's Rolls Royce being parked illegally outsider Donovan's pad and the police constables being very very patient and solicitous when they identified whose vehicle it was!). But such claims must be accepted very cautiously, of course. ;-)
Brian D 3:55:25 PM
Shrewd. Knew how to roll w changes and reinvent for a bit there. Got some great studio musicians together
Dylan (host) 3:56:18 PM
What did he do for Yellow Submarine?
Richard from Rocky Hill 3:58:55 PM
Sorry, I don't recall clearly ... it might have been the "Sky of blue and sea of green" line or something similar.
Dylan (host) 4:00:41 PM
Thats a very cute thing to brag about
David Shortell 4:04:16 PM
I suppose there’s a large section of the population who only knows Donovan from Futurama, where he sang “Atlantis” but changed it to describe Atlanta, GA. I can’t hear that song anymore without seeing Billy Batts get stomped to death.
Brian D 4:05:17 PM
Sky of cerulean bluuuu... try that Paul. And sea of alizarin crimson... no wait...
Richard from Rocky Hill 4:05:59 PM
Wow! My 71-year-old memory ain't quittin' on me just yet. I checked the Wiki article on "Yellow Submarine" and found this: "Scottish singer Donovan contributed the line "Sky of blue and sea of green".[9] In 1980, Lennon talked further about the song: "'Yellow Submarine' is Paul's baby. Donovan helped with the lyrics. I helped with the lyrics too. We virtually made the track come alive in the studio, but based on Paul's inspiration ... written for Ringo."[7]" Hope that helps, all.
Brian D 4:06:34 PM
Yeah that Goodfellas song placement etched in my brain too
Brian D 4:07:12 PM
That's cool Richard!
Richard from Rocky Hill 4:07:27 PM
Ah, Brian D! Wear your love like heaven, man! ;-))
David Shortell 4:07:56 PM
I saw Donovan back in the 2000’s at the Anthology Film Archives--not to perform, but to speak after a screening of Jacques Demy's “The Pied Piper” (probably his only acting work).
Richard from Rocky Hill 4:09:36 PM
Hmmmm ... I didn't know about that film, I'll have to check it out. Thanks, David.
Brian D 4:10:53 PM
Love that keyboard line from Wear Your Love Like Heaven. That reninds me of am radio in mom's car in the 79
Brian D 4:11:05 PM
*70s
Mark 4:20:37 PM
Wish I heard the Donovan earlier I see it inspired N interesting discussion
Mark 4:21:30 PM
The inspiration for Jennifer juniper is quite interesting
David Shortell 4:25:44 PM
When I watched Franco Zeffirelli's “Brother Sun, Sister Moon” I was surprised by the unmistakable singing voice in that 1972 film, because I had never seen any Donovan record for that movie. For some weird reason, it wasn’t until 2004 that he released the soundtrack album--but he rerecorded its songs three decades after the originals!
Brian D 4:28:53 PM
Ahhh Tom Paxton tune!
David Shortell 4:31:52 PM
“Sunshine Superman” isn’t the only song where Donovan references Green Lantern. There’s a line in “Museum” that goes “Maybe you should go get a power ring, you'd make all your troubles go.”
Brian D 4:33:36 PM
Another great song
Brian D 4:35:42 PM
Future request Dylan. BJ Stevenson "My Maria". Great voice. Slice of 70s single
Brian D 4:35:57 PM
Please
Brian D 4:42:03 PM
After i heard that one earlier now i am thinking of Danny O'Keefe's Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues... another great one
Brian D 4:44:19 PM
There is a great series of comps titled Truckers Kickers Cowboy Angels that have material not unlike some of today's playlist
Richard from Rocky Hill 4:54:16 PM
Thanks, David, for the further Green Lantern riff from "Museum." That's such a charming Donovan song. Love that when he sees mthe girl, "She's looking a little wiped out, she said I looked like Peter Pan .."
Richard from Rocky Hill 4:55:26 PM
A pluses all around today for the new slot show!
Dylan (host) 4:55:34 PM
I'll look into it
Brian D 4:55:41 PM
Great show Dylan. Love the mix
Dylan (host) 4:55:45 PM
Thank you everyone!
Francis Poulenc 4:56:13 PM
your show is awesome and your banter is funny
