Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:02:17 PM
Hey Patrick, how are you today?
Brian D 12:02:45 PM

Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:03:08 PM
Hi Brian, thanks for being here!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:03:19 PM
Patrick, how is your family?
the_dude 12:03:43 PM
Howdy Jerry, looking forward to the show!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:04:26 PM
Dude, what is happening?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:06:07 PM
The nice thing about people who come to the listener's lounge here is that the like different types of music.
jimbeaux 12:10:20 PM
I am not sure if I could get a massage to this! Sounds wild, though.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:13:16 PM
Ha, hey Jimbeaux!
John Wilson 12:13:23 PM
Been tuning in from NH for a while now, first time in the chat. Fell in love with this station a few years ago when I spent a lot of time in Philly. Loved First Massage, I'm actually reading a Durarara book right now and the song sounds straight off of the show's soundtrack
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:16:21 PM
Hi John! Thanks for tuning in.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:18:07 PM
I just looked up Durarara. A 13 volume comicbook/novel?
Christine Duffy 12:18:11 PM
Hi, Jerry! 👋 Hi, everyone in the chat!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:19:04 PM
Hi Christine, how are you?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:21:00 PM
This album playing now is by Lee Smith, a Philly bass pllayer. the album's personnel are all philly locals. It is nice to hear and see
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:22:44 PM
I can never get enough of the flutist, Marc Adler. This is soprano Tim Warfield
Brian D 12:25:44 PM
Recorda me (ray-corda may.... remember me in Spanish )
the_dude 12:26:39 PM
Bit delayed but not much Jerry, prb and working! Loved the noisy start to the show!
Christine Duffy 12:28:38 PM
Marc Adler is really an amazing talent.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:28:39 PM
Thank you for that, Brian! Good info for me! Dude, glad you are well. I love that Trane noise that sounds downright organic!
Brian D 12:29:54 PM
Hey Jerry this week is 50th Anniv of Philadelhpia International Records. Maybe a tribute hour in Jerry's Room coming up? Gamble and Huff greatness
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:30:52 PM
Christine, he put out one or two CDs 20 years ago under his own name and I think that was it.
Brian D 12:31:53 PM
Looking forward to Hilton Valentine Animals tribute. Great guitar parts great tone.
the_dude 12:33:08 PM
And welcome to the chat from NH John! Seen a few episodes of the anime maybe I should get back into it
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:33:23 PM
Brian, I like the Philly International idea. And I've been mispronoungicing that Joe Henderson tune for years!
Brian D 12:35:30 PM
Ha. The command form of the verb recorder. To remember
Brian D 12:36:12 PM
<--Spanish Major
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:37:30 PM
Ha, came in handy for me just now. My poor Latin experience did not elp.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:38:24 PM
After graduating college, one of my daughters taught English for a year in Spain.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:38:57 PM
...her father bragged.
John Wilson 12:41:42 PM
This track is absolutely incredible
Brian D 12:42:27 PM
Very nice! As you should. I thought about that too. Took a course abroad in Madrid right after graduating from PSU. Summer of 1991
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:43:14 PM
John Wilson, that was Robert Glasper. His own kind of fenius.
Brian D 12:43:18 PM
Only time I ever got to see that continent . one day i have to get back to Europe
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:43:33 PM
genius
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:45:58 PM
Brian, I went to visit her. But instead of going to Madrid where she had been so many times during that year, we drove south to the tip of portugal and back up. spain, Portugal, it was so much fun.
Brian D 12:49:18 PM
Olive and lemon country! And guitar country of course. I bought a lovely nylon string classical gtr in Madrid. A deal too. Prob 150 to 200 $ 1991 money. Still right as rain in tune and intonation. Light tan burnt orange color stain. Love it
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:50:19 PM
Nice!
Brian D 12:55:48 PM
Still try to keep up on my old classcal gtr lesson pieces and learn some new ones. Been working on Vivaldi Lute Concerto in D Rv 93. John Williams (gtr player not Star Wars composer) did a great version recorded in Sevilla, Spain in the Alcazar Palace. Wonderful
Brian D 12:57:08 PM
Used to air on PBS. No audience. Just John, chamber orchestra on some pieces and the amazing scenery... walls ceilings etc
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:58:05 PM
I gotta pick up my lutee again.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:58:20 PM
lute
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:58:40 PM
No, just kidding.
Brian D 1:02:03 PM
Crazy design instrument the lute. don't have one of those yet
Brian D 1:03:34 PM
Half doz guitars ,2 or 3 mandolins, banjo or 2, dobro, 1 ukelele, a borrowed elec bass, hmmm maybe more
Christine Duffy 1:03:53 PM
Because of this chat, I am dreaming of Spain and Portugal. I need to go to both countries, post-vaccine. I am envious! 🍊 🇵🇹 🇪🇸
Christine Duffy 1:04:50 PM
@Brian, you have quite the collection! No lutes yet
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:05:06 PM
We drank our way up and down Portugal. The wine was to die for. AND the PORT!!!!!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:06:06 PM
Brian D, you are a renaissance man!
Christine Duffy 1:07:08 PM
@Jerry, did you come across Amontillado port on your travels? I always think of the story by Edgar Allen Poe.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 1:08:05 PM
My Sangeet alter-ego really digs Brooklyn Raga Massive. संगीत They're doing some amazing things there. 🛺
the_dude 1:11:18 PM
I knew I'd see you here dave when I heard this tune start! Will have to look them up now
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:12:00 PM
Dave, thanks for checking in. I am honored. You have an incredible show, everybdy should listen!
Christine Duffy 1:12:03 PM
@Dave the Obscure, it's like Jerry summoned you!
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 1:12:21 PM
Many of them have grown up bi-culturally, so they approach both Indian Classical and western jazz with equal fluency.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 1:12:49 PM
Hi Christine. My ears are always open.
Brian D 1:14:40 PM
This is great! Luscious strings
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 1:14:43 PM
Thank you, Jerry. 🙏🏾 I'm a long time fan of Serenade to a Cuckoo.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:15:01 PM
They are so good, it is indescribable
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:15:31 PM
Thank you, Dave
the_dude 1:16:26 PM
Love that combination. And yes, you and Selecta, always locked in! Fridays are really great with the new season
jimbeaux 1:16:30 PM
truly massive!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:18:11 PM
Thanks, Dude, Jimbeaux. Glad there are still devoted radio people. It's how we all grow.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:19:12 PM
And yes, this music is truly massive.
esoterica 1:20:56 PM
hi, jerry! wonderful music. thanks much!
Christine Duffy 1:26:49 PM
This track is really transporting...
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:29:00 PM
Hi Esoterica, thank you so much. You get praise here in Listeners Lounge all the time! You are the best!
Anthony B. Creamer III 1:31:29 PM
Thought their gig at Painted Bride a few years back totally underutilized their massive forces and numbers.
esoterica 1:32:51 PM
Thank you:). Just made my day. hi, everyone! i feel like i am taking a course (a compelling, fun one!) the I listen to your show
esoterica 1:33:02 PM
*when
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:33:21 PM
Hey Anthony, thanks for tuning in. I put one of the Hertzberg CDs away in the wrong jacket and have spent 3 weeks looking for it. I will write later.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:34:01 PM
Esoterica. You started out great and have grown to awesome and incredible. Muscular!
Anthony B. Creamer III 1:34:11 PM
It happens, Jerry.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 1:36:41 PM
And Esoterica's chat room? Overwhelming! Messages are posted faster than I can read them.
Mark 1:40:57 PM
Hi Jerry and Jazz aficionados: lovely music as always and like u mentioned earlier these are all new and fresh pieces . But since this is a new semester can I introduce a topic for the chat room to think about and discuss over the course of months ?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:43:00 PM
Hi Mark!
Brian D 1:44:00 PM
Good night Christopher Plummer . Master actor over many decades. RIP
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:44:30 PM
I just saw that! A shame.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:44:54 PM
Mark, what were you going to suggest?
the_dude 1:45:15 PM
Hello DJE! Yeah talk about massive, the sonic bloomers chat is ⚡- and all hears mark mark!
the_dude 1:45:30 PM
Ears hears, same same
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:53:54 PM
This Tom Tallitsch song is called Mablestates, I'm sure taken from Benny Golson's "Stablemates." I'm wondering if it is the same dhords.
Christine Duffy 1:55:44 PM
@Mark, what's the topic you wanted us to think about and discuss? I'm curious.
Mark 1:57:06 PM
These are all great new releases but what I kinda would like to hear the educated group here tell us how does Jazz attract a new generation of younger listeners and musicians? I remember you touching on the topic in the past - it’s the age old question: Is Jazz Dead ? So that’s my topic for the new Semester:) Professor Jerry will you allow the listeners to think about it ?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:58:08 PM
The professor is into free speech
Mark 1:59:11 PM
Haha just food for thought did u ever teach on this at MLNS ?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:01:51 PM
I've heard people ponder this issue my whole adult life. I have my thoughts.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:04:15 PM
It takes me awhile to read a clock.
Christine Duffy 2:04:41 PM
@Jerry 😄
jimbeaux 2:05:38 PM
I think it starts with ensuring that kids have equitable access to music & instruments...more difficult with funding cuts to public music education programs.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:07:41 PM
JimBeaux, access is certainly a part of it.
Brian D 2:08:35 PM
That great deep Newcastle accent. Chas & Eric in interviews.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:09:04 PM
Oh, I thought you were talking about me.
Brian D 2:09:24 PM
Eric shows the accent just a touch on some songs
Brian D 2:09:36 PM
Haha!
Brian D 2:09:56 PM
Jurrys reee-yooom
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:10:50 PM
I was thinking about this very subject, Brian. Burdon had such an accent when speaking, and it reallydisapated.while singing
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:11:13 PM
With me, it's a combination of slurring and South Philadelphia.
Brian D 2:14:33 PM
He has great projection. Sometimes theatrical. Many times soulful and bluesy.
Brian D 2:15:29 PM
Take off on Baby Let Me Follow You Down there
Brian D 2:16:09 PM
Hints of The Shadows on the gtr riffs(last song)
Brian D 2:17:54 PM
another great accent is a great singer from just across the river from Newcastle. Brian Johnson of ACDC. Thick "Geordie" accent. He was even in a band called Geordie!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:21:03 PM
Like the Stones, all the Animals early records are straight up blues tunes.
Brian D 2:22:48 PM
Yup they loved the blues! Love that elec organ tone . Jetty on the Rocks had some great elec organ songs on her New Year's eve show
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:31:52 PM
Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood-a song written for Nina Simone.
the_dude 2:32:20 PM
Loving this animals set Jerry and Brian you should put together a heavy accent singer list, you have a lot from the chats already
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:34:59 PM
I was going to be the lead singer of a soul/jazz band and call it "Wade In the Wooder"
the_dude 2:39:39 PM
Ha! Woulda loved to hear it Jerry. A while ago during DJ Elliot's show he had an artist with the name Woodard, I swear I heard watered (wondered) he got a real kick out of it
the_dude 2:39:56 PM
(wondered*) darn auto correct
the_dude 2:40:06 PM
Ugh again! (Woodered) sorry
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:41:16 PM
Wooder is a Philadelphian's proudest trademark!
esoterica 2:42:14 PM
i'm back for Jerry's room!
Bo 2:43:28 PM
Hi Jerry! Great show you have.
Bo 2:43:48 PM
Hi all!
esoterica 2:43:51 PM
my bro just saw eric burdon in san diego a couple of years ago...still going strong, as far as I know
Christine Duffy 2:44:03 PM
We're all drinking the wooder in Jerry's Room!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:44:10 PM
Thank you for listening, Bo! Appreciated.
Brian D 2:44:37 PM
Sonny Boy the 3rd could do a set on Chevrolet/ Hey Gyp. He probably has!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:45:11 PM
Esoterica, very cool of your brother. He's still a Bluesman, living in California and wearing floral short sleeve shirts and sunglasses!
Brian D 2:46:33 PM
My fave of the bunch is Taj Mahal's Chevrolet version
esoterica 2:46:33 PM
yeah, he was playing at a place called Humphreys, outdoor venue overlooking the bay, lovely
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:46:48 PM
Penned by Donovan. My favorite version: the Soul Survivors, the flip side of Expressway
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:47:29 PM
Esoterica, wouldn't you like to be there right now?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:48:06 PM
This is the song you sing when you're at the end of your line.
esoterica 2:49:58 PM
oh yes, jerry!:). i miss the left coast. but i just played in the snow with my dog so feeling the jersey woods in their prettiness
esoterica 2:51:02 PM
*dogs (moose, 90 pound black lab/golden and dolly sue, 15 pound terrier mix!). and I feel you re: the end of the line song
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:51:43 PM
Haha.
Brian D 2:52:38 PM
Hmmm.. Chevrolet goes way back before Donovan . But different enough for him to get a credit I guess.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:52:50 PM
I'll feel better if the Eagles trade Carson Wentz
esoterica 2:54:18 PM
such a great song
Bo 2:55:27 PM
Never gets old this.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:56:39 PM
Gerry Goffin & Carole King!
esoterica 2:58:40 PM
Bye, guys! Thanks for a wonderful show.
Bo 2:58:41 PM
Two of the greatest.
Brian D 2:58:56 PM
Wonderful sheee-ay-oh-oooow Jurry!
Bo 2:59:49 PM
Great show Jerry, thank you, be safe!
esoterica 3:00:30 PM
haha...brian! you got the EB accent down pat
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 3:00:36 PM
Thanks Bo, Brian, Esoterica for joinging and your great comments
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 3:04:08 PM
Thanks Dude, Jimbeaux, Christine, Mark, dave the Obscure, Anthony, John, Patrick!
