I found an interesting app this week: type in a global city & it pulls up a radio station from there but guess what geography I keep coming back to ?! :)

Hey Brian- Yeah, the station got in one of those Rough Guides collections and RG to Avant Japan is to my taste!

@Mark- I think I have that app- Mine is called Radio Garden or something like that

Blind taste test : I liked Abyssinia slightly better / hadn’t had injera in forever

Salmon w/honey Aleppo pepper sauce on at the end to glaze. Salt boil taters

Abyssinia takes a while but it worth it

Does the title of the Gájanas track have anything to do with diamonds? Those Ugric languages don't have a lot of affinities with other European or Scandinavian-based languages but the 'diamánta' part suggests something to do with diamonds...

I saw Mark Feldman at John Zorn’s old space with his wife, Sylvie Courvoisier, whose album Y2K/Ocre I love!

Yeah, the snow has crapped out for now but it's supposed to start up again around 9 p.m. according to accuweather. Accuweather is much more invested in this being a bigger snow-event, meanwhile weather.com and weather underground remain unconvinced.

@Mark- I almost lived in a big decrepit building across the street from the then empty Divine Lorraine circa 2001. It was cheap rent and big space but violated maaaaany safety codes and was kinda crazy. My friend lived in the bldg and hundreds of bats used to swarm out of the Divine Lorraine roof at dusk!

It is a fun 10-15 seconds. I timed out the little zigs and zags nicely for it to stay in time. I made my wife an edit of Herbie Hancock/Headhunters beer bottle Watermelon Man for her phone ring tone. And some other fun ones for her alarms & notifications. I have a cool set of Hanna Barbera music and they throw on a bunch of snippets that are great for ringtones/alarms (like Jetsons spaceship sounds, Fred F yabba dabba of course, and just some great BLAM!, BWANG!, POP! sound fx)

I was mentioning in chat a month or so ago (Kat maybe) about David Lynch ringtones that were available 20 yrs ago or so for a short time. One of them was him yelling "GREAT JUMPIN GEORGE!" over and over

I think I don’t get tired of the chiptune original NES soundtrack stuff because I a) have positive 3rd-5th grade associations with it and b) heard those songs 100,000 times when playing those games, so they are deeply ingrained and don’t grate on me

@Mark- That’s one of my favorite Studio Ghibli films! It’s very earnest and hopeful. The director was Hayao Miyazaki’s protégé and was slated to become creative director of Ghibli, but he died a few years later 😭

I love The Space Lady's cover of this song! Also -- it reminds me of a really great German language tv series Rob and I watched about 2 years ago -- 'Deutschland 83' -- that had the Schilling song accompanying the opening credits.

Wonderful to hear new projects from the former Espers personnel! Again -- beautiful juxtaposition of Beautify Junkyards following a Space Lady track!

@Teresa- Yeah, I think this is my fav cover by her! I have to check out that show! If not for the current state of the world, we were originally going to be going to Germany in August of 2020 to visit my cousins on my mom’s side, and stay with them in a cabin near Singen. I like getting German tv/movie recommendations from them. I still hope I can do that trip at some point. Been fighting the airline to let me extend my cancelled flight credit!

Let's all hope that The Space Lady will visit Philly in 2022 (or late 2021). PhilaMOCA is an interesting venue, but I've never seen live music there. It was a really cool film from Japan.

@Christine- I’ve seen a lot of great live shows there and it has such a nice vibe, perfect size, not too big and perfect shape- you can always see the stage! If t gets too crowded downstairS, like at the Chromolodeon reunion show, I just head for the balcony. Saw a good number of movies there too- including the Hayao Miyazaki documentary, “The Neverending Man”- so good! New recommendation for ++Good Movie Club!!

Sooooo good!!! Truly! I've got a ton of German language tv show recommendations for you, if'n you'd like. I haven't been to Germany since 1986/87. But I was a German lit major in college and I like to try to keep up my language skills here and there. So Rob and I watch a ton of Italian language and German language tv shows, mostly police procedurals...

@Teresa- I watch Spanish language movies and shows for the same reason- trying to stay sharp. I picked up a little Italian. I woefully never learned German except so curses from my cousins when we were teens!

@Teresa - I am assuming you would have seen "Tat Ort"?

Oh yes! I watched it regularly while I was living in Hamburg (1986/87) and now, we're watching 'Tatort: Borowski' which takes place in Kiel (due North of Hamburg). We also watched most of 'Tatort: Lindholm' which takes place in Hannover (I think?) but the plots became too ridiculous.

@Teresa- I’d like to know some of the other German shows you watch! And Italian ones. I watched that HBO Italian show about the two friends last year. I mostly watch Italian movies and don’t know that many Italian shows

Those Tatort programs are refreshingly different from the USA cop shows.v

I agree. Although I consider the Tatort franchise to be roughly the German equivalent of the 'Law and Order' franchise in its duration and its concentration on various detective teams. In Germany, there is also an East German variant called 'Polizeiruf 110'. Now it takes place in places that were formerly part of the DDR.

@Ian- Oh, I get it! My daughter is reading a homework assignment out loud to me as I listen and type right now!

My mother LOVES the Elena Ferrante books that 'My Brilliant Friend' portrays. She loved the show as well.

@Teresa- I’m sure my cousin Mathias know Kiel. He and his wife are in Hamburg. The rest of my fam is much farther south, near Stuttgart

@Teresa- I never finished the show. I did something I never usually do and watched it a bit out of order. Just would stumble upon episodes as they aired

@Ian- I’m sure you know how memorable the few nights out you get when you have a baby! That was that Magnetic Fields “Distortion” show for me. I’d seen them many times before and I’ve seen them many times since, but that one was special!

I'm ashamed to admit that I haven't seen it. I hear it's really terrific. We spent many months watching 'Ispectore Montalbano' based on the mystery books by Andrea Camilleri -- most highly recommended! You can find the series on the tv channel mhz and on amazon prime. We just finished watching another series on amazon prime called 'Rocco Schiavone: Ice Cold Murders'. Despite the cringy title,

it was really good!

@Ian- I am maybe 3ish years or so from being able to go out without getting babysitting! When she was little, though, it was so hard to get anywhere without just bringing her and I couldn’t go to loud shows or stay out late. The worst was how little my non-parent friends understood this! They wanted to do dinner together at 10 pm! Ha. My pre-parenthood schedule!

Been listening to the station since living in Ptown in the 90s, but the pandemic sort of supercharged my fandom

@Ian- Who knows these days?! I think it varies drastically, but in a few years, my kid will be 15, so I think that’s fine! But my parents left us home alone in the 80s when we were 10ish? It was definitely more lax then!

I really like the chat too even though it's often a busy time for me to join in. Reminds me of chat rooms in like 1995 :-)

@Ian- Yeah, I grew up in South Jersey, then moved to Philly and discovered PRB in my early teens! Thank goodness for this station!

@Mark- The I-House is special to me. My parents’ wedding reception was there in 1970. I love the building- great example of brutalist architecture!

@Mark- I and many of my fam members worked at Penn and spent a lot of time at I-House. A few friends worked in the I-House. I was the DJ for I-House’s Lightbox Film Center grand opening party with Allison Anders as guest! I love her. They screened Gas, Food, Lodging, which had just gotten the Criterion release treatment! I-House’s Film series had just been rebranded Lightbox and our old PRB DJ Jesse Pires heads it. Now it’s at the Gershmann Y

@Mark- Nice! Yeah, she was a music critic and was and still is a radio DJ too. She and her daughter have a radio show together. She also has a website about how she bought Greta Garbo’s record collection and proceeded to update it with reviews of her collection and fun stories!
