Opening things up today with Ms. Esther Phillips. Purportedly discovered by Johnny Otis as a child, where she helped catch chickens at Otis' little L.A. chicken ranch.....

Great start. Enjoying the Larry C (gets a lil GD Help on the way-ish). I'd Love to read a bio on the Otis family Johnny, Shuggie etc. Some great stories &great musicians.

Used to listen to Otis spins records and tell stories on his Saturday afternoon show at KPFA-Berkeley in the 90s...

Cool! There's a great in studio performance of Zappa & Shuggie I think from Johnny's show. Surfaced recently on an unofficial release of Zappa live FM radio broadcasts, multiple years/ venues/radio stations etc

Yeah, I interviewed Nick a while back, sweet guy. Dave Douglas' KEYSTONE was the release I was fumbling on about, it has a DVD of his group scring Fatty Arbuckle shorts and a CD with fuller versions of the music. Douglas is so prolific, there's still all sorts of nooks and crannies of his catalog to discover...

Love Milford Graves, I always thought of my show as "the drummer's friend."

Yes, drums and rhythm have captured me more as I/ve gotten older, where love of songcraft has waned...

I agree about the rhythms. After becoming habituated to complex rhythms in Indian music and jazz, I am finding the simple 4/4 pop beats infuriatingly boring.

Yeah, most the rock I enjoy these days has to have something rhythmically goin' on....

A favorite drum part of mine is on Willie Dixon's own version of his song Back Door Man (I am the Blues lp). I love the pattern. I try to tap out the accented beats and barely get it right. Clifton James is credited as drummer on the lp notes

In the 90s I lived in San Francisco where I got to soak in a lot of Latin culture, including John Santos Saturday night residence at a cool former speakeasy, The Cafe Du Nord. Amazing to hear that band live, though I was never the dancer....

And if a band uses New Orleans funky 2nd line beat drums that makes my ears perk up

In the 80s Rhino put out a three LP series of New Orleans R&B, all those Allen Toussaint-written number and more. That was my gateway...

My kid loved to chant along when her was four or five.

Today, I recognize Jamaladeen Tacuma from Ornette's band among the chanters...

One of the best rhythmically named musicians!

I heard Allen Toussaint's own version of Southern Nights recently. Always loved how delicate yet psychedelic that vocal part was recorded. Of course I first heard it by Glen Campbell. I remember him doing it on the afternoon talk shows mom watched like Merv Griffin. Cool that he brought some airplay to Allen's song and maybe some $. That was a big hit

Toussaint's amazing, his record with Lee Dorsey are some of my favorite things ever...

Now I'm suddenly playing the disco hits....

Fun! So cool that before Allen Toussaint passed, he got to play at the Jerry Garcia tribute concert. Get Out of My Life Woman was a tune JG Band covered. The video looks like Allen had a ball

As a laserdisc collector, GOODBAR is one of the film released on the format.

I brought a young woman friend (boy that sounds weird) to see it at a revival on-scren in San Francisco, and they were really knocked out by it, maybetheir first taste o such 70s cinema. It held up for me, a powerful film.

Yeah, all the songs on the soundtrack really capture this desperate need for transcendence, it's really well curated...

Yes the instruments being the best part of the bootleg show too. Oz was hit or miss on vocal quality depending on the bootleg

I go to Salem County almost every Labor Day weekend. Great all star Bluegass festival in Woodstown.

I saw Bill Monroe and Doc Watson perform at that festival years ago. Is it still called "The Delaware Bluegrass Festival"?

Yes it is! Even longer name if you add the pre name The Brandywine Friends of Old Time Music Present the Delaware Valley Bluegass Festival
