Opening things up today with Ms. Esther Phillips. Purportedly discovered by Johnny Otis as a child, where she helped catch chickens at Otis' little L.A. chicken ranch.....
Brian D 12:15:13 PM
Great start. Enjoying the Larry C (gets a lil GD Help on the way-ish). I'd Love to read a bio on the Otis family Johnny, Shuggie etc. Some great stories &great musicians.
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:18:42 PM
Used to listen to Otis spins records and tell stories on his Saturday afternoon show at KPFA-Berkeley in the 90s...
Brian D 12:24:09 PM
Cool! There's a great in studio performance of Zappa & Shuggie I think from Johnny's show. Surfaced recently on an unofficial release of Zappa live FM radio broadcasts, multiple years/ venues/radio stations etc
Christine Duffy 12:35:52 PM
Cosmic Funk WILL save the world 🌎
Christine Duffy 12:36:54 PM
What a great start. Thanks, DJ Dan!
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:36:55 PM
Mr Parker makes you believe it!
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:49:23 PM
This whole disc of Ms Yamamoto playing Mr Parker's music solo is a particular favorite from the set...
Brian D 1:06:27 PM
Some lovely acoustic guitar playing in the playlist today
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:10:00 PM
Growing up as completely a rock and roll guy, I feel like I can't help but favor the instrument. Mary Halvorson is probably my favorite artist working today...
Mark 1:10:27 PM
Lovely sound as always/ which piece had the fatty arburckle connection ?
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:11:31 PM
Elsa Nilsson's guitarist, Jeff McLaughlin, sounds great on this...
Mark 1:14:36 PM
Love the nick milevoi / the last indoor musician i saw b4 the shutdown :(
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:20:09 PM
Yeah, I interviewed Nick a while back, sweet guy. Dave Douglas' KEYSTONE was the release I was fumbling on about, it has a DVD of his group scring Fatty Arbuckle shorts and a CD with fuller versions of the music. Douglas is so prolific, there's still all sorts of nooks and crannies of his catalog to discover...
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:28:25 PM
Love Milford Graves, I always thought of my show as "the drummer's friend."
Mark 1:29:27 PM
Haha & now I’m back exploring all the arbuckle controversy :-0 reminder for film & tv buffs the golden globes r Sunday ! AA r In April
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:29:48 PM
....maybe because I have so many friends who are fine drummers who still feel like they're the butt of drummer jokes.
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:30:28 PM
I haven't heard any film nominations for this most unusual ear in film
Mark 1:31:10 PM
I personally have moved from bored by the drum to finding it my most interesting listening instrument / fwiw
Mark 1:32:36 PM
Yes most unusual film year ! Love dr zauis pic up top tho :)
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:34:24 PM
Edward G Robinson would've had the touch to finesse Zaius' country persona but Maurice Evans? Never!
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:37:56 PM
Yes, drums and rhythm have captured me more as I/ve gotten older, where love of songcraft has waned...
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 1:40:01 PM
I agree about the rhythms. After becoming habituated to complex rhythms in Indian music and jazz, I am finding the simple 4/4 pop beats infuriatingly boring.
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:41:55 PM
Yeah, most the rock I enjoy these days has to have something rhythmically goin' on....
Brian D 1:44:03 PM
A favorite drum part of mine is on Willie Dixon's own version of his song Back Door Man (I am the Blues lp). I love the pattern. I try to tap out the accented beats and barely get it right. Clifton James is credited as drummer on the lp notes
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:45:11 PM
In the 90s I lived in San Francisco where I got to soak in a lot of Latin culture, including John Santos Saturday night residence at a cool former speakeasy, The Cafe Du Nord. Amazing to hear that band live, though I was never the dancer....
Brian D 1:46:04 PM
And if a band uses New Orleans funky 2nd line beat drums that makes my ears perk up
Brian D 1:52:19 PM
I like this Chano Pozo shout out!
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:52:43 PM
In the 80s Rhino put out a three LP series of New Orleans R&B, all those Allen Toussaint-written number and more. That was my gateway...
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:53:07 PM
My kid loved to chant along when her was four or five.
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:53:47 PM
Today, I recognize Jamaladeen Tacuma from Ornette's band among the chanters...
Brian D 1:55:09 PM
One of the best rhythmically named musicians!
Brian D 1:59:23 PM
I heard Allen Toussaint's own version of Southern Nights recently. Always loved how delicate yet psychedelic that vocal part was recorded. Of course I first heard it by Glen Campbell. I remember him doing it on the afternoon talk shows mom watched like Merv Griffin. Cool that he brought some airplay to Allen's song and maybe some $. That was a big hit
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:03:25 PM
Toussaint's amazing, his record with Lee Dorsey are some of my favorite things ever...
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:04:36 PM
Now I'm suddenly playing the disco hits....
Mark 2:05:47 PM
Haha u could do Whole show on this soundtrack it might b my all time favorite!! The movie is extremely hard to find but it might b Dianne best performance!
Mark 2:07:00 PM
The book author hated how the film turned out / had an all time great quote about it !
Mark 2:08:01 PM
I wish i could find the movie / would rewatch tonite:) !
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:08:06 PM
Do tell.
Brian D 2:08:34 PM
Fun! So cool that before Allen Toussaint passed, he got to play at the Jerry Garcia tribute concert. Get Out of My Life Woman was a tune JG Band covered. The video looks like Allen had a ball
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:08:38 PM
As a laserdisc collector, GOODBAR is one of the film released on the format.
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:09:37 PM
I did but the soundtrack recently, the film has been a big favorite since seeing it as a teenager on HBO
Mark 2:12:30 PM
Yes i don’t think I’ve seen since my teens / I just looked up a list of best never to go to dvd & it’s #1
Brian D 2:13:56 PM
I remember watching ... Goodbar on cable when I was a preteen. Risque stuff. Diane was great in that yes
Mark 2:16:20 PM
Judith Rosner, book author, detested the film & said (I wish I had full quote): letting Hollywood adapt book was akin to drop daughter off @ Roman Polanski and not knowing what’s gonna take place / now i gotta find her whole critique
Mark 2:18:46 PM
I always remember don’t leave me this way as closing song on soundtrack!
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:19:36 PM
I brought a young woman friend (boy that sounds weird) to see it at a revival on-scren in San Francisco, and they were really knocked out by it, maybetheir first taste o such 70s cinema. It held up for me, a powerful film.
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:20:48 PM
Yeah, all the songs on the soundtrack really capture this desperate need for transcendence, it's really well curated...
Brian D 2:25:34 PM
YESSSS!!
Brian D 2:26:22 PM
Tune those strings waaaayyyy down to sludge levels
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:26:28 PM
What could be more Jersey than Sabbath (a Salem County boy myself)...
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:27:42 PM
Love hearing them chug away without Ozzy...
Brian D 2:28:50 PM
There's a good quality bootleg of Sabbath from Asbury Park 1975. One of their better ones
Brian D 2:30:13 PM
Yes the instruments being the best part of the bootleg show too. Oz was hit or miss on vocal quality depending on the bootleg
Brian D 2:31:38 PM
I go to Salem County almost every Labor Day weekend. Great all star Bluegass festival in Woodstown.
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:35:29 PM
I saw Bill Monroe and Doc Watson perform at that festival years ago. Is it still called "The Delaware Bluegrass Festival"?
Brian D 2:37:39 PM
Yes it is! Even longer name if you add the pre name The Brandywine Friends of Old Time Music Present the Delaware Valley Bluegass Festival
Brian D 2:38:26 PM
Whew. . I got to see Doc a few times fortunately
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:39:30 PM
The pair did a set of old Monroe Beothers tunes, it was pretty magical. I shook Bill hand, very gently, then he crushed mine...
Mark 2:41:04 PM
Great show tho now I’m gonna b obsessed w finding goodbar copy :) came out same year as annie hall hence it being overlooked
Mark 2:41:44 PM
Maybe talk golden globes next week :) !
Brian D 2:42:57 PM
Bill Monroe stories wow ... one of my favorite biographies. Written by a New Jersey writer i believe Richard Smith
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:43:23 PM

Dan Buskirk (host) 2:45:11 PM
Funny, he's called the show a couple times, and said some very nice things about the show.
Brian D 2:48:52 PM
That is the very book and author ! So cool to hear that. And cool to hear this tune from American Water. Malkmus harmony..... ahhh. RIP David Berman
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:49:47 PM
I just heard a tribute with Will Oldham and his widow singing it, but this is so much better...
Brian D 2:53:44 PM
Another sad news story this week. So glad WPRB turned me onto Stereo Total.
