Industrial disasters

“The invention of the ship was also the invention of the shipwreck”

Paul Virilio

"First, the disaster. Then the weeping. Then the outrage. And we are all too familiar with what comes next. After a few weeks, when the cameras are gone, when the ink on the editorials has dried, everything returns to business as usual. The health and the safety of America's coal miners, the men and women upon whom the Nation depends so much, is once again forgotten until the next disaster..."

Robert Byrd

John Luther "Casey" Jones (March 14, 1863 – April 30, 1900) was an American railroader who was killed when his passenger train collided with a stalled freight train at Vaughan, Mississippi.

Do u mixcloud the shows / 1-3am is tough listening slot
DJ Scope Creep (host) 1:16:25 AM
We do pre-record them. We're on the west coast, so it's 10-midnight over here, and we can hand out on the chat
Mark 1:18:41 AM
So they’re on mixcloud? Else you’ll be keeping me up way past my bedtime:)
DJ Scope Creep (host) 1:19:33 AM
Send an email to interrogative@splendidvagabond.info and I can send you a link to the mp3.
Mark 1:20:30 AM
thanks that’d be fantastic/ this a great version :)
DJ Scope Creep (host) 1:21:09 AM
It turns out that like every canadian band will eventually cover "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald."
Mark 1:23:12 AM
I saw gordon a few years ago / he’s a hero of mine
Mark 1:25:17 AM
and yes ur right about Canadians & the song / I’ve spent a lot of time there esp in Toronto
Mark 1:32:37 AM
It’ll b 100 year anniversary of bryn athyn pa train disaster this year / 21 died :( / i hike past it frequently on my local rail to trail
DJ Scope Creep (host) 1:35:27 AM
what happened? Assuming there's a plaque with detail
Mark 1:38:21 AM
Yes there’s a plague/ human error led to head on crash / it’s interesting story - the horrific fire led to ban of wooden rail cars & replaces w metal ones
Mark 1:42:25 AM
I assume this one about molasses plant disaster?
DJ Scope Creep (host) 1:43:09 AM
it was, yes. I haven't gotten to look at the lyrics in detail.
DJ Scope Creep (host) 1:43:42 AM
It's interesting b/c I mostly know the Thickets as a sort of Lovecraftian tribute band
Mark 1:45:01 AM
Ha I was reading lyrics in shazam / i was talking lovecraft on a prb chat yesterday
Mark 1:48:15 AM
thanks for the show / I’ll be listening as drifting off - see what dreams music inspires:)
DJ Scope Creep (host) 1:48:32 AM
So glad you could listen!
DJ Scope Creep (host) 1:48:54 AM
It actually means a lot. 1-3am is kind of a hard slot. Hard to know if you're just beaming into the void.
DJ Scope Creep (host) 1:49:33 AM
We have a long, long set of mine disaster songs coming up, that might actually be nice to drift off to.
Mark 1:57:20 AM
hmmm now im just gonna have to stay awake / ya have to encourage a west coast streaming listening community / very nice show!

DJ Scope Creep (host) 2:00:59 AM
welcome! You're just in time for a mega-set of mine disaster songs
-ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ- 2:03:00 AM
This is the third show with such a playlist I’ve heard today
DJ Scope Creep (host) 2:04:04 AM
Mine-Disaster-Oriented Rock (MDOR for short)
-ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ- 2:06:48 AM
there ya go! it was a question on Jeopardy! yesterday.
Mark 2:15:31 AM
Don’t know the commercial potential for MDOR / 1 & 6 shazam for the two previous songs :(
DJ Scope Creep (host) 2:16:11 AM
one of the things that stuck out to me, doing the pre-show prep for the playlist, was how many of these happened within living memory.
-ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ- 2:16:30 AM
It’s important that you’re dedicating this time to these topics and these songs. Well Done and Good Job to each of YOU!
Mark 2:19:19 AM
Yes thanks for the description of the disasters these songs represent/ thus would actually be a great theme show on the Labor Day labor wave shows
DJ Scope Creep (host) 2:19:34 AM
We were sort of inspired to do it during the Geolgy show a couple of weeks ago. We realized, "oh wow, there are a LOT of mine disaster songs."
DJ Scope Creep (host) 2:21:53 AM
Pulling up the descriptions definitely brought it home. Like, these were real things that happened to the writers. It even felt different from the train disasters, which were mostly like, glorifying an often reckless engineer.
DJ Scope Creep (host) 2:22:23 AM
The Sago Mine Disaster happened in 2006. This century!
Mark 2:24:41 AM
Totally understand/ feeling the grief in each song :(
Mark 2:26:39 AM
I just checked out the geology playlist / i hike thru some amazing rock cuts daily on my rail to trail
DJ Scope Creep (host) 2:29:30 AM
I love rail trails. Have you ever done any stretches of the Great Allegheny Passage? It uses the passage of the old Western Maryland line to connect Pittsburgh with Cumberland in a continuous trail
Mark 2:31:54 AM
No I just read a book from the library about PA rail trails / that one looks like a great one it really caught my eye
Mark 2:34:06 AM
Mine is currently 6 miles with 3.5 more being constructed to b finished this summer It has a ton of sub trails off of it too
Mark 2:39:39 AM
I’ve become a huge advocate of converting the abandoned rail lines to hiking trails in the past year / it’s not cheap - costs about $1mill per mile
DJ Scope Creep (host) 2:41:47 AM
But it's such a wonderful sort of re-use.
Mark 2:47:07 AM
Never expected to be staying up until 3am tonite / should probably just stay up for ameena show replay :)

DJ Scope Creep (host) 2:56:14 AM
This one is off "A Mighty Wind" but you really get a sense of the tropes: the dates, the times, the sense of impending doom
DJ Scope Creep (host) 2:56:44 AM
