Already singing along!
Jen (host) 10:02:15 AM
I forgot how brilliant this song is
Mike Lupica 10:02:32 AM
"My Yoo-Hoo will not call to me...:
Jen (host) 10:03:21 AM
HAHAH I *JUST SAID* out loud that that is my favorite line. Dying.
Jen (host) 10:04:04 AM
My Crystal Light has gone out
Mike Lupica 10:04:07 AM
The Pet Milk line also kills me
Jen (host) 10:06:02 AM
I might need to put it on again later.
Mike Lupica 10:06:25 AM
Well THIS should make this morning's round of WPRB data entry catchup interesting...
jimbeauxdough 10:07:16 AM
O B L I V I A T E M E
Jen (host) 10:08:17 AM
Good morning, everyone!
Christine Duffy 10:11:21 AM
Morning, DJ Jen & all! Negativland was one of the musicians/groups I listed on the WPRB survey as ones I was turned into here.
Jen (host) 10:12:10 AM
Outstanding, Christine! I was channeling you!
the_dude 10:14:05 AM
Dave the obscure told me to run here, but I'm still late! Morning Jen! Digging this ex eye track, and nice choice on the survey Christine, maybe you should request they release the survey results on your survey!
jimbeauxdough 10:14:27 AM
there wasn't enough room on the survey to list the hundreds of bands I discovered, so I just listed the first new band I heard 29 yrs ago on air!
the_dude 10:16:37 AM
Ha that's awesome Jimbeaux, what was it if you don't mind?
the_dude 10:17:43 AM
Got a new one for you too - Jimbeauxdot (Jim - bo - doh) or Jimbeauxdoh/Jimbeauxdough
jimbeauxdough 10:17:59 AM
Terry Riley..Descending Moonshine Dervishes. I was like "what is this station? what is playing?"
Christine Duffy 10:18:01 AM
@the_dude, what a great idea. I wish I had thought of that! (releasing the survey results)
Christine Duffy 10:18:42 AM
@jimbeaux, what a stellar moment that must have been. 🌟
Jen (host) 10:18:45 AM
I don't control the survey results, but I want to hear more about the bands you discovered here!
Mike Lupica 10:20:19 AM
I think the first band that PRB turned me on to was a local hardcore band that covered the "Gilligan's Island" theme song. Turned out the legend of that song LOOMED LARGE in the station's history... http://www.wprbhistory.org/jeff_feuerzeig/
jimbeauxdough 10:20:42 AM
and that track is at least 30 min long. thanks dude, it is done (doughn)
jimbeauxdough 10:23:37 AM
great story, Mike! lost art of the Cart
the_dude 10:25:05 AM
Haha maybe make the suggestion to a friend's survey Christine? Glad you like the meta. And hahaha glad you like the new nom du jour beauxdough!
Jen (host) 10:25:35 AM
@mike YES
Mike Lupica 10:26:40 AM
WPRB carts: https://flic.kr/p/2FrTR
David Shortell 10:29:33 AM
Didn't Hüsker Dü release a rendition of the Gilligan's Island theme before Artificial Artifacts?
Jen (host) 10:30:49 AM
Husker Du version was 1981...?
Brian D 10:31:42 AM
Ugh meeting made me miss my fave Negativland song...
David Shortell 10:32:44 AM
This Coriky song mustn't be confused with the Kinks' "Have A Cuppa Tea"!
jimbeauxdough 10:36:26 AM
husker du also covered Love is All Around, Mary Tyler Moore theme
Brian D 10:36:41 AM
Speaking of tea the Negativland line "My Constant Comment won't shut up! " might be my fave from Drink it Up.
Jen (host) 10:37:04 AM
@jimbeauxdough, that's one of my all-time faves
Jen (host) 10:37:22 AM
@brian SO FUNNY
Brian D 10:37:32 AM
And "When a wall of smoothies rough me up.." oh I could go on and on....
Brian D 10:39:19 AM
Swiss Miss wasn't pure. And Canada's gone dry.
Mike Lupica 10:46:48 AM
Giving all new meaning to the term "Frankie Fix"
Jen (host) 10:49:27 AM
my whole household boogies to this song!
Christine Duffy 10:50:41 AM
Friday frug!
Brian D 10:56:31 AM
Frankie Friday Frugtastic
Colin McDonnell 10:59:40 AM
probably been decades since I heard this song.
Mike Lupica 11:00:11 AM
A song for all seasons!
Colin McDonnell 11:00:47 AM
Probably one of my first adolescent college radio experiences. cruising the dial on my 80's boom box, and like what is this?
Colin McDonnell 11:01:10 AM
WTSR was the station I remember clearly.
the_dude 11:02:24 AM
WTSR, wait new jersey has TWO radio stations?!
Mike Lupica 11:02:26 AM
Probably DJ Jeff Feurzeig on the air! (Scan down the chat to the wprbhistory.org link.)
Colin McDonnell 11:02:30 AM
I marked with pen on the radio where I found PRB and TSR/KDU shared a mark.
Brian D 11:02:41 AM
Claudette wit da reggae at tree tirty inna de afternoon inna da Trenn-Ton
Colin McDonnell 11:03:13 AM
The Chris and Scott show was the punk show on TSR
Brian D 11:03:19 AM
WTSR had a great TV themes show weekly
Mike Lupica 11:03:22 AM
What year?
Colin McDonnell 11:03:31 AM
late 80's
Colin McDonnell 11:03:39 AM
87ish
Mike Lupica 11:03:56 AM
Gotcha. Bob Conrad was also DJing a Saturday morning punk show at that time.
Colin McDonnell 11:05:08 AM
I would record staticy shows right off the radio on cassette to take with me on the school bus Walkman
Brian D 11:05:16 AM
We traveled to non existent rreggae shows more than once thanks to incorrect date/ month etc announcements from WTSR
Jen (host) 11:05:17 AM
I'm really loving this memory lane stroll. And how much radio has meant to SO MANY of us.
Jen (host) 11:05:25 AM
@brian ha!
Colin McDonnell 11:06:00 AM
lol pre-internet scheduling!
Brian D 11:06:05 AM
Oooohhhh this is the one that sounds like Neu Hallo Gallo done stoner rock style!
Mike Lupica 11:07:19 AM
@Brian, haha! Many years after the fact, I do consider myself lucky to have seen so many classic reggae acts still-sorta-in-their prime thanks to that show. Sister Carol, The Wailers, Eek-a-Mouse, Yellowman.
the_dude 11:09:04 AM
Damn that's so cool, what were old school reggae shows like?
Brian D 11:10:13 AM
One was a reggae sunsplash fest non existing WAY up at Waterloo Village in N Jerz. Hmmm no rasta colored stickers on cars, no parking lot hacky sackers . . Hmmm no hang outers at all. Go to box office. They look at us strangely. Are we here for the show? Yes? We think? What show is it we ask.... ohh it's Regis And Kathy Lee! They had a music variety show that toured late 80s early 90s . We left
Brian D 11:11:10 AM
That was a LONG drive. But we explored & found some things to do
Mike Lupica 11:11:46 AM
@the_dude, as I was like 17 years old when all of this happened and was catching a LOT of 2nd hand ganja smoke, the details are kinda hazy.
Mike Lupica 11:12:10 AM
@Brian, oh no!
Brian D 11:12:39 AM
Best was a Bob Marley Day in Fairmount Park in Phila. Festival on grass. Lots of music, vendors, jerk goat/chicken, low police presence. Great time!
Colin McDonnell 11:13:17 AM
@mike L, I do remember that Conrad show on TSR! There was a third show I don't remeber the name but the dudes played a lot of west coast dark thrashy stuff.
Mike Lupica 11:13:18 AM
#festivalongrass
Brian D 11:13:42 AM
Then. .. year later she announced it again on WTSR. Drove to Philly. .. no Bob Day . ... empty patk.. . Had sads
Brian D 11:13:53 AM
Park
Brian D 11:15:03 AM
Mike Ha! I did not even notice that as I typed! Yes HASHtag on grass
Mike Lupica 11:16:45 AM
I love it when songs go super heavy out of nowhere like this one just did.
jimbeauxdough 11:21:19 AM
this song is endless. endlessly fascinating.
Jen (host) 11:21:20 AM
When I first listened to this, I thought I had gone through the entire album. It's basically a set.
Jen (host) 11:22:00 AM
I'm also VERY thrilled to have discovered that at least 2 of them are audio nerds from San Francisco.
the_dude 11:22:07 AM
Same Mike! Love the show today Jen ( and well every Friday), perfect compliment to the new abnormal and serenade, love Fridays on prb
jimbeauxdough 11:22:29 AM
drummer keeps doing fake slowdowns like "it's over!"
Jen (host) 11:22:38 AM
thanks, @the_dude! Fridays are the best days!
Mike Reese 11:22:39 AM
hi jen! i'm really digging this new Terry Gross, thanks for sharing! I have listened to this song no less than a dozen times
the_dude 11:22:52 AM
And sounds like some good times everyone, I can imagine with those details alone, wasn't plugged into reggae shows as a kid but I wish I was, one day I'll get to go to one!
Jen (host) 11:23:03 AM
@jimbeauxdough hilarious. hi, @mike! So good.
Brian D 11:24:00 AM
It really is a new music treasure so earlyi n the year
Mark 11:29:05 AM
haha u mean u didn’t use the 20 minute song to go for smoke break like the fm dj’s in days of yore :) thanks for turning onto terry gross !
Jen (host) 11:30:48 AM
Haha I have no idea what you're talking about, Mark. 20-minute songs are all about snacks and coffee. ;)
dante from the woods 11:31:19 AM
super interesting to hear Mary Timony's solo work outside of Helium. Totally different feel!
Mark 11:33:39 AM
Haha when they played inna-gadda in old days meant the fm dj needed a cig 🚬 :) / not so appropriate today !
Jen (host) 11:34:04 AM
@dante She has a lot of moods - but funny that this song was around the same era! I haven't listened to her new stuff at all but am now curious.
Jen (host) 11:34:32 AM
@mark so funny! I used to love John Zorn "Spillane" for the long breaks.
Mike Lupica 11:34:55 AM
@Mark, I can't isolate it down to a specific year, but at some point, I think the generally-understood smoke break song switched from "In a Gadda Da Vida" to "Marquee Moon".
Mike Lupica 11:35:24 AM
Presently, I think we are witnessing the realtime transition from "Marquee Moon" to Olivia Neutron-John.
Christine Duffy 11:35:32 AM
Killer set, DJ Jen! 💜 M.I.A.
Mark 11:36:08 AM
Haha & agreed killer set on a killer show !!
Jen (host) 11:38:42 AM
@mike HAHAHA
Jen (host) 11:39:06 AM
@Christine and Mark -- I'm so happy you're enjoying it! Thanks for being here!
Jen (host) 11:40:21 AM
everyone, don't forget to fill out your WPRB survey! tell your friends! wprb.com/survey
Jon Solomon 11:43:26 AM
Tuned in with wet hair + a headache. Let us see which song fixes which malady.
Jen (host) 11:46:57 AM
I've got the headache covered. Here you go.
Jen (host) 11:47:44 AM
Radio Birdman fixes everything. :)
Mike Lupica 11:48:04 AM
Fixed me GOOD.
Mike Lupica 11:48:30 AM
Also, someone get listener Bo on the line, his Spidey Senses kick in every time someone plays OZ rock.
Brian D 11:52:09 AM
Great set DJ Jen.
Jen (host) 11:52:27 AM
thanks for being here, Brian!
Jen (host) 11:53:10 AM
@Mike one day I'm going to do an all Oz/NZ show. In lieu of ever traveling there, sigh.
Brian D 11:55:17 AM
Jerry Chat awaits...
Colin McDonnell 11:55:45 AM
Great show!! an excellent accompaniment to my coffee and mountain of work. Running Redlights is like a soft opening for the weekend.
Jen (host) 11:56:05 AM
Thanks, Colin and everyone for being here! Also, turn this song up.
Colin McDonnell 11:56:34 AM
