Black History Month special!!

603ae9c6bb176.jpg

It's a vague theme for Black History Month! Music by Black people, some of it about The Struggle but some of it is just music about other stuff because Black people do other stuff too.

In a fun twist I cannot speak this week so I am using a robot substitute. Let's see how it goes!

Also it's a three hour theme cause Black people deserve it!!

Mark 8:09:38 PM

Christine Duffy 8:11:03 PM
Hello Dear Leader Commie Francis and your robot voice 🤖
Commie Francis (host) 8:11:06 PM
sure!
Christine Duffy 8:11:25 PM
@Mark, what did he say?
Commie Francis (host) 8:11:33 PM
the first time i ever did "internet radio" i used robot voice cause i didn't have a mic
Elspeth Abel Slater 8:11:48 PM
The robot voice is soothing!
Mark 8:12:35 PM
Hahaha Christine I’ll have to direct u to the lyric sheet / some would make me blush:)
jimbeaudelaire 8:12:54 PM
Domo Arigato, Commie Roboto!
Toyo 8:13:11 PM
time really is a flat.. uhh....
Christine Duffy 8:14:09 PM
@Mark, I looked up the lyrics. Truth
Mark 8:14:33 PM
yes i miss when pat / clamour club would have the robot narrate passages ... hope ur voice gets better :)
Commie Francis (host) 8:14:59 PM
thanks, it's an annoying thing that happens basically every winter
Commie Francis (host) 8:15:17 PM
this year i got a covid test just in case it wasn't just that cough but it's just that cough
Mark 8:16:26 PM
@chris haha wasn’t sure if the fcc would let me post / amazing what can’t air but there so much profanity around everywhere :(
Commie Francis (host) 8:17:23 PM
the fcc only cares about what goes out over broadcast airwabes
Commie Francis (host) 8:17:28 PM
as far as swearin goes
James Anderson 8:17:37 PM
Maybe its because I just watched AI, but the robot voice talking about Black History Month feels like being a far future alien. :)
Mark 8:18:00 PM
i know - just crazy !!
Commie Francis (host) 8:19:47 PM
let's see if i can get the robot to pronounce slim gaillard correctly
Chris Michalovic 8:20:48 PM
You led off with my song! I am honored.
Commie Francis (host) 8:21:06 PM
it rules!
James Anderson 8:24:19 PM
Hmmm, a little trouble with "cehved"
Commie Francis (host) 8:24:31 PM
yeah oh well i won't say it again
Commie Francis (host) 8:24:54 PM
i got "guy yard" though
James Anderson 8:25:30 PM
Heh. I get super exited about this. I beta tested Macintalk - millions of years ago.
James Anderson 8:25:42 PM
I was thinking of how to spell it phonetically.
James Anderson 8:26:06 PM
cauvid, might do it.
James Anderson 8:26:11 PM
ok, Im done.
Christine Duffy 8:28:47 PM
I remember the joy of playing around with Macintalk. 🍎
Commie Francis (host) 8:34:14 PM
possibly most out of character song i've ever played? oh well don't care!
Chris Michalovic 8:40:56 PM
What, Lizzo? She's not half bad, tbh.
Chris Michalovic 8:41:16 PM
And yes, most of my comrades are in their 20s.
Commie Francis (host) 8:41:45 PM
i think she's great, it's just funny to hear that modern production on my show
Commie Francis (host) 8:42:07 PM
black island hahahaha
Chris Michalovic 8:42:07 PM
That is true
jimbeaudelaire 8:43:09 PM

🤖 Gil Scot-Heron is the best. Affirmative! *beep beep*
jimbeaudelaire 8:57:33 PM

David Shortell 9:10:59 PM
That song by the Lumpen must be about Black Panther cofounder Bobby Seale, who was literally gagged at the Chicago 8 trial, then removed from the trial and ultimately convicted for contempt of court (thus turning the Chicago 8 Trial into the Chicago 7 Trial). I read a book of transcripts from said trial illustrated by Jules Feiffer, who was present.
Commie Francis (host) 9:11:29 PM
yes correct it is
Commie Francis (host) 9:11:59 PM
also playing a song about assata shakur later
Commie Francis (host) 9:12:21 PM
this robot involves way too much typing!
David Shortell 9:16:43 PM
I regret missing Pure Hell (who once shared a bill with Sid Vicious!) when they played at Long Branch’s Brighton Bar eight years ago. I did get to see Gil Scot-Heron play at South Amboy’s Club Bene on the Fourth of July three decades ago.
Commie Francis (host) 9:17:22 PM
jealous!
Chris Michalovic 9:18:45 PM
That is awesome, David!
David Shortell 9:51:50 PM
That picture of Angie Davis is pretty much the way nearly everybody envisions her, but when is the last time most people saw her? For me, it was when a news program invited her commentary on the fall of the Berlin Wall; I saw her in long cornrows and marveled at how different she looked from the heyday of her celebrity. And that news report was in 1989! How different does she look now?
Commie Francis (host) 9:52:49 PM
i've seen pretty recent pictures of her, she doesn't have the perfect round fro anymore but she has natural grey curly hair
Commie Francis (host) 9:53:25 PM
pretty much like picture a professor at berkeley
Commie Francis (host) 9:53:48 PM
er uc santa cruz close enough
David Shortell 10:08:23 PM
I won two free passes to the 2013 Death reunion at Le Poisson Rouge. I got to the venue and sought someone in line I could give my extra free ticket to. When I found such an individual, it turned out to be the very same WFMU staffer that granted me the free passes over the phone! He otherwise would’ve had to pay his way in, but accidentally benefitted from his own volunteer work at the station! (‘Twas Pat Byrne, the frontman for They Live! who eventually got his own WFMU program for a time.)
David Shortell 10:16:29 PM
I must confess that the first time I heard “John the Revelator” was when Thee Headcoats sang it (sans instrumentation) at their last American show in 1999.
Commie Francis (host) 10:18:38 PM
i had son house father of folk blues as a child (well my parents did) and was obsessd with that particular song
jimbeaudelaire 10:22:19 PM
Awesome show robo-Commie! 💥💥💥
Commie Francis (host) 10:24:39 PM
thanks!
Commie Francis (host) 10:25:57 PM
i think it;s very interesting that you all show up when i'm live but last week when i had to play a rerun only my most loyal fan showed up
Commie Francis (host) 10:26:01 PM
it's like you all KNOW
Christine Duffy 10:31:33 PM
I didn't know. 😄 (What was I doing last Saturday? I can't even recall now)
jimbeaudelaire 10:32:09 PM
that was a much older show! I was feeling some deja vu trying to figure out why it felt familiar yet new...
Commie Francis (host) 10:32:55 PM
as soon as i went live i got a lot more people chatting too. you don't know that you know but you do
jimbeaudelaire 10:46:59 PM
it can be hard to tell if DJs are live/memorex unless they disclose it. can be easy to pass it off by saying "sorry no requests". Also probably easier to engage in chat if you've recorded it already!
Christine Duffy 10:47:03 PM
Time to get it together, indeed. 💜
Commie Francis (host) 10:50:17 PM
a byrd rule i can get down with
Commie Francis (host) 10:50:46 PM
yeah doing the show live and chatting is kind of a juggle but so is doing a show and answering the phone
Commie Francis (host) 10:51:10 PM
i am finding managing playlist and chat and robo dj almost impossible
Commie Francis (host) 10:51:38 PM
so hopefully i can talk next week!
Christine Duffy 10:52:02 PM
I'm forever impressed by you & other DJs playing, posting, and chatting simultaneously.
Christine Duffy 10:52:40 PM
Thanks DJ Commie. I hope you feel better soon!
Scooter France 10:54:18 PM

Commie Francis (host) 10:54:23 PM

Highly illogical. *Spock voice*
