I don't why this is listed as varnam. This is a regular "kriti". Varnam has a diffferent format
Ram Ramaprasd 10:07:52 AM
Hi Brian, followed the links you had sent. Liked the music
Sangeet Team (host) 10:08:00 AM
But is it not a varnam? Have I been misled?
Ram Ramaprasd 10:08:17 AM
No, this is not a varnam
Sangeet Team (host) 10:08:54 AM
Yet it seems to be always played first.
Ram Ramaprasd 10:09:13 AM
A regular composition, usually the first one sung/played at a concert. On Ganesha, the destroyer of obstacles
Brian D 10:09:19 AM
Thank you. I had about 6 other bands lined up to send as well. But did not want to overwhelm the chat (hah as if I know how to post few and short posts anyway!)
Sangeet Team (host) 10:10:28 AM
Okay, I have edited the playlist to correct my error.
Ram Ramaprasd 10:11:15 AM
Earlier era, a concert started with varnam ( a particular genre). The second item would a regular composition (kriti) on Ganesha
Sangeet Team (host) 10:11:21 AM
Well, Brian, you are what you is.
Ram Ramaprasd 10:14:41 AM
Good idea, David, to feature women artists this month.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:15:21 AM
The theme helped narrow my focus.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:16:05 AM
And I am featuring more instrumentalists, since vocalists will have their time in the coming weeks, I'm sure.
Ram Ramaprasd 10:16:31 AM
Good thought
Ram Ramaprasd 10:20:31 AM
GNB also created this raga
Sangeet Team (host) 10:23:00 AM
Ah, I should have researched a bit more.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:31:55 AM
A ghazal is a poetic love song set to music, with lyrics typically in Urdu. A ghazal may be understood as a poetic expression of both the pain of loss or separation and the beauty of love in spite of that pain.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:32:48 AM
Ghazals come in styles ranging from westernized pop to semi-classical. Farida Khanum’s ghazals are usually semi-classical, usually based on ragas, and are analogous to thumris, but with more emphasis on lyrics.
Ram Ramaprasd 10:41:23 AM
There is a story attached to it. Thyagaraja goes to a temple during noon and the priest says "sorry lunch time" and closes the curtain. Then the composer sings this song, "Can't you open the curtain?" Miracle! The curtain opens. That is the lore. Another more realistic take is: "Can't you open the curtain of my ignorance?"
Sangeet Team (host) 10:42:58 AM
Good story. Thanks, Ram.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:43:38 AM
A "Tappa" is a form of Indian semi-classical music. Its specialty is a rolling pace based on fast, subtle and knotty construction.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:43:59 AM
It is believed that Tappa was derived from folk music of Punjab and Sindh.
Ram Ramaprasd 10:47:49 AM
Interestingly there are not that many practicing Hindustani classical musicians from the Parsi community. May be they drifted to Bollywood. Zarin is one and Firoze Dastur is the other I recollect
Sangeet Team (host) 10:49:07 AM
Yes. Parsis are generally a highly cultured community, but not well represented in classical music.
Ram Ramaprasd 10:49:45 AM
Zubin Mehta and his dad chose Western classical music
Sangeet Team (host) 10:50:25 AM
Bhatiali is a form of folk music in both Bangladesh and West Bengal. Bhatiali is a river song mostly sung by boatmen while going down streams of the river. The word 'bhatiyali' comes from 'bhata' meaning "ebb" or downstream.
Christine Duffy 10:51:01 AM
Morning, DJ Dave & all. I've been really enjoying this last set. 🌄

Sangeet Team (host) 11:04:44 AM
I'm not sure about the raga here. The liner notes conflict with other sources.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:05:15 AM
A 'javali' is associated with classical Indian dance.
Ram Ramaprasd 11:07:03 AM
All your information is correct. Also Paras is also known as Paraju
Sangeet Team (host) 11:09:22 AM
I see. Thanks, Ram. It gets confusing. Different ragas are sometimes known by the same name, and one raga can have different names.
Ram Ramaprasd 11:10:30 AM
Shantala is the sister of the famous child prodigy Shashank (flute)
Sangeet Team (host) 11:14:12 AM
"Swarna Jayanti" is in a raga created by Ravi Shankar, similar to Raga Bhatiar.
jimbeauxdough 11:20:36 AM
Good day, Team Sangeet/DTO!
Sangeet Team (host) 11:22:23 AM
Good morning, Jimbeauxdough!
the_dude 11:42:28 AM
That style sounds perfect for Sangeet the obscure!
Sangeet Team (host) 11:43:08 AM
You are exactly correct, dude. I LOVE the dhrupad style.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:50:21 AM
But dhrupad pieces usually clock in at over 1 hour. That's hard to fit into a radio show.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:53:48 AM
A Tillana or thillana is a rhythmic piece in Carnatic music that is generally performed at the end of a concert and widely used in classical indian dance performances.
Ram Ramaprasd 11:56:35 AM
Drupad was the earlier form of Hindustani music before Khayal style took over. I too like Drupad - more meditative
Brian D 11:59:33 AM
Most enjoyable! Good day
Sangeet Team (host) 12:00:20 PM
Thank you, Brian D.
Sangeet Team (host) 12:00:44 PM
