good morning!
Mark 7:30:47 AM
good morning krista! looking forward to the start of the week music & mallard 🦆 discussion :)
Krista (host) 7:35:10 AM
hi Mark, I've done little research on the mallard and found out some interesting things, will share that about 9:00
Mark 7:36:38 AM
sounds great b listening all morning :)
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 7:38:17 AM
Die Augen des Teufels = The eyes of the devil 😈
Krista (host) 7:38:44 AM
glad to have you. it was hard getting out of bed this morning. so very cozy with the rain, the window open in my bedroom and my little son snuggled up in bed with us.
Krista (host) 7:41:48 AM
spooky, Dave. I recently got a German ad for a romance book between The Devil and an unnamed woman. It had lurid text! That's what i get for reading too much Goethe!
Brian D 8:08:10 AM
This is wonderful. Good tunes on a grey Monday
Krista (host) 8:08:54 AM
hi Brian, I do love a grey day here and there
Brian D 8:13:56 AM
Love that whole Fahey , Kottke, Basho world of guitar to explore for days. Takoma records. Treasures
Krista (host) 8:16:41 AM
Bashovia is an album I like to put on when I'm cleaning, makes it more epic to pretend I'm cleaning a great hall.
Krista (host) 8:17:44 AM
I've never gone in for imagining I'm a noble, it's always peasant life I'm interested in learning about
jimbeaudelaire 8:18:05 AM
Hey Krista! Any songs by Mallard (ex-Beefhearters) to accompany mallard talk?
Brian D 8:19:02 AM
I could listen to Leo Kottke stage patter and stories for hours. Found some great sounding live board tape recordings of his. And I like listening to him play too!
Krista (host) 8:19:22 AM
I'll look some up, do you know any off hand you would like to hear? no swear words or the FCC will get my goat. I need that goat to clear brush.
jimbeaudelaire 8:19:55 AM
Or, bee farters. Most are instrumental, I believe.
Krista (host) 8:20:06 AM
yeah, Brian, Leo Kottke always has weird stories to tell!
Brian D 8:20:17 AM
Where'd the Go-at go at?
Krista (host) 8:21:21 AM
I heard his composition Ice Fields from a bootleg, would love if they made an actual record of it
Brian D 8:26:54 AM
That title sounds like a quintessential Kottke title
Brian D 8:31:17 AM
Oh i looked it up. The Ice Field is on A Shout Toward Noon. But I think you are right that a live stripped down version would be best. It's probably out there in the live bootleg universe. This Maddy Prior is great. One of the best
Krista (host) 8:35:03 AM
good to know Brian, is that with the full orchestra, I wonder?
Brian D 8:35:07 AM
When asked about Mallard the band featuring his ex bandmates, Beefheart said, "I think they are bunch of quacks"
Krista (host) 8:36:42 AM
ha! Imagine being free after being terrorized in a house by Beefheart!
Brian D 8:39:50 AM
A Shout Toward Noon is when Kottke had to redo his whole approach to playing due to tendinitis. Some synthesizer on that lp and shows some signs of its decade (released 1986) but it still sounds like Kottke. There's a cello on the record. No orchestra but maybe a synthesizer orchestral sound on some tracks
Brian D 8:40:52 AM
I love his version of Duane Allman's Little Martha on that lp.
Christine Duffy 8:40:56 AM
Morning, Krista & all *waves* Can't wait to hear about ducks
Krista (host) 8:41:05 AM
ah, here's what wiki says about it: In 1990, he and composer Stephen Paulus created Ice Fields, a work for amplified acoustic guitar and orchestra in a concerto format. Ice Fields featured five movements, each based on an existing Kottke composition, with orchestral backing and interlude sections.[12] It was premiered by Paulus's Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and has been performed occasionally since but has not been released on record, partly because of the high cost of producing a recording with
Krista (host) 8:41:27 AM
hi Christine!
Christine Duffy 8:42:17 AM
*waves* diggin' these tunes! 🇹🇬
Krista (host) 8:43:48 AM
I heard the bootleg of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra
Brian D 8:45:17 AM
Cool! So he took The Ice Field and expanded it to a new composition. Love to hear that
Krista (host) 8:45:45 AM
It is beautiful!
Krista (host) 8:46:05 AM
The bootleg is terrible quality
Krista (host) 8:46:56 AM
otherwise I would play it. Also features a bonus coughing section from some guy
Brian D 8:48:53 AM
Arthur Alexander
jimbeaudelaire 8:52:27 AM
...when one theremin isn't enough. Thx for playing Mallard!
Krista (host) 8:57:31 AM
I recognize that name Brian, took a look in my playlists and he comes up under "original versions" - looks like his songs were covered by Bob Dylan and Rolling Stones
Brian D 9:04:23 AM
Yes. Beatles too. He also recorded his own songs. Arthur Alexander had a brief rediscovery n the 90s. Ben Vaughn produced an lp where he redid many of his old hits. Sadly he passed not long after that
jimbeaudelaire 9:11:17 AM
welp, that's enough about necrophile mallards!
Krista (host) 9:13:12 AM
Gross, huh? mallards are naaaasty
Krista (host) 9:13:42 AM
I picked this Space Boat for the quack sounding bits
Christine Duffy 9:18:15 AM
Interesting (and one pretty gross) facts about mallards, DJ Krista! Thanks. And now onto stud spiders...
pethie-ish 9:28:16 AM
enjoying the show, Krista! Hi everybody!
Krista (host) 9:28:57 AM
hey pethie!
Christine Duffy 9:29:08 AM
Hi, Pethie!
Paul Nolan 9:31:27 AM
Enjoying the show. Woke up my wife to hear Mallard segment. Gamble Rodgers is a Travis pickin' guitarist with great stage stories
Krista (host) 9:33:58 AM
Hi Paul, I'll write him down! I've got some things to look up that Brian recommended last week, too, so I have my work cut out for me. Now I just need to cobble it together!
