Good afternoon! Kicking off this membership drive edition with some Moog-y Oliver Nelson....
Brian D (2021 Donor! u can too!) 12:01:43 PM
Oliver Nelson goes synth funk! Love it!
Colin McDonnell 12:01:59 PM
Way to set the "moog" of the show!
connor 12:02:03 PM
Have a good show!
Dana K (DBTF) 12:02:04 PM
600 pledges!!
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:02:34 PM
He did some TV soundtrack work in this mode, though you rarely heard it on records...
Brian D (2021 Donor! u can too!) 12:03:24 PM
What's the other funk jazz lp w skull in title I'm thinking of... o ya Melvin Jackson "Funky Skull". That's a fun listen
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:03:28 PM
600 pledges! The only one missing is.....you!
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:03:54 PM
FUNKY SKULL, another favorite...
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:05:46 PM
Today: hear rare anecdotes from my early days in college radio and.....special guests!
Brian D (2021 Donor! u can too!) 12:06:07 PM
This Oliver reminds me of some library lps w the titles "Beyond the Valley of the Beats... Superbeats... " etc
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:06:44 PM
Glad to find a used CD of SKULL SESSION at the Rec Ex this weekend...
connor 12:07:55 PM
does re-subscribing dilute the drive numbers?
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:09:14 PM
Not at all! Please, go crazy!
Brian D (2021 Donor! u can too!) 12:13:49 PM
I say it and mean it for so many shows but it bears repeating and is so true: Dan's show here is just Quintessential WPRB ! You cannot hear shows like this in the radio universe! Please consider donating.
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:16:00 PM
Thanks Brian! With everybody here, a labor of love..
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 12:16:17 PM
Yes, Brian D. Nothing better than WPRB.
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:17:34 PM
Besides Fujiwara, I slipped in two of my favorite contemporary instrumentalists into this set, cellist Tomeka Reid and guitarist Mary Halvorson...
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:26:42 PM
Listening to the new Desertion Trio record on a drive this weekend, just knocked me out!
Liz Bot 12:26:51 PM
Haha, Nick! I’ve known Nick Millevoi since he was a wee high school student at Masterman
Commie Francis 12:27:57 PM
Nick Millevoi is a real mensch
Liz Bot 12:28:59 PM
Before Nick was in Many Arms, he was in a band with Rob Luddington and John Mullen called The Accidental Occurrence and then in a group called Circles with Rob and Dan Blacksberg and Julius Masri
Brian D (2021 Donor! u can too!) 12:29:24 PM
My kind of gtr playin! Well one o the many kinds i like. As is par for course on PRB. Good menu
Commie Francis 12:29:32 PM
i love this collaboration he did with Erik Ruin
Commie Francis 12:29:35 PM

Brian D (2021 Donor! u can too!) 12:31:57 PM
Jon Solomon played some Chris Forsyth live in prb studio w Nick M trading off on gtr. Wow
Brian D (2021 Donor! u can too!) 12:32:44 PM
And Ribot with one of the best lp titles....
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:33:10 PM
Wilbo Wright on bass!
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:33:51 PM
Besides making all these great records, Nick does tons of first-rate music journalism....
Commie Francis 12:34:54 PM
man we should have gotten Wilbo to promise he'll start doing a show again if we hit our drive goal
Liz Bot 12:35:21 PM
I have all those old early Nick releases. I was in Cobra House when he & Rob & Mullen had their first rehearsal ever and housemates and I blocked them into the room for a laugh and declared it the house for women of Cobra House only that night. I have delighting in giving Nick a hard time ever since!
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:35:33 PM
Wilbo always worked phones during my shift, miss him!
Commie Francis 12:35:37 PM
i do have faith that he will be back some dayt
Liz Bot 12:36:00 PM
Johnny DeBlase! Love Johnny!
Commie Francis 12:36:48 PM
btw we have contributions from:
Liz Bot 12:36:58 PM
Wilbo emailed me recently to recommend an album. Half to hear from him! I believe Jon or Mike spotted him recently
Commie Francis 12:37:03 PM
Michael who says DAN BUSKIRK IS THE MAN (caps mine)
Commie Francis 12:37:14 PM
Anna in Philly
Commie Francis 12:37:29 PM
and Jaclyn from out of state!! Thank you all!
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:38:22 PM
Thanks for those updates!
Commie Francis 12:38:43 PM
you're welcome! i'm all excited
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:39:36 PM
Used to have a mike from Claymont Delaware who called, he was turned onto my show by his son, also named mike, who would sometimes call. You gotta treasure father/son listener combos....
Liz Bot 12:40:04 PM
Wilbo’s recommendation he sent me is Those Mysteries by Egnekn's Daughter. Seems Egnekn is an anagram of Gen Ken Montgomery's first name(s). His Daughter Luna does the vocals, I think she was maybe 4 at the time. It's on a comp that came with Cabinet Magazine called Juvenilia.
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:40:28 PM
sounds intriguing...
Liz Bot 12:40:50 PM
Nice generational WPRB listener connections!
Liz Bot 12:41:14 PM
Yeah, Wilbo always has thoughtful recommendations!
pethie-ish 12:42:14 PM
I miss Wilbo!!!
Liz Bot 12:43:35 PM
One live show I miss a lot that I think of when I think of music on your show, Dan, is Jamaladeen Tacuma’s Outsiders Fest. I enjoyed Infinien there and then heard it on WPRB on Jazz with Buskirk. Of course saw Nick play at that fest.
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:43:43 PM
Wilbo used to do the show after me. i loved hearing the latest story about his tree-doctoring....
Liz Bot 12:44:19 PM
Man....I really hope Wilbo comes back!
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:44:46 PM
Yeah, that Outsiders Fest in particular was one of my all-time favorite Philly outings. Such incredible music...
Liz Bot 12:46:03 PM
Yeah, and thinking of that year of Outsiders Fest with Infinien at I-House makes me miss I-House as a venue and show space. I loved that building so much, and my parents were married there in ‘71!
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:46:05 PM
Chad Taylor is one of today's premiere talents in my book, year-in-and-year out, he plays on four or five of my favorite records...
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:47:31 PM
I was so swept up in Exhumed losing their space, I'd kinda forgotten about all the music I've seen there. So many great times, though I've forever hated those bleachers! (now it can be told)....
Commie Francis 12:47:56 PM
Thanks to Laura for your donation!
Commie Francis 12:48:05 PM
And Rob from Erwinna with a monthly donation!
Commie Francis 12:48:45 PM
Rob would like us to know he is listening on a RADIO with an ANTENNA in the ATTIC. me too except i'm not in the attic.
Pethie 12:48:46 PM
Exhumed!!!!
Dan Ruccia 12:49:00 PM
Hi Dan! Definitely agree about Chad Taylor being at the top of the game right now. There was a period where it felt like he was on like every top-notch jazz album that was coming out
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:51:07 PM
Chad lives in Philly now too, so I've gotten to see the magic up close!! He said whenever it's possible, he wants to come on the show...
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:52:08 PM
Exhumed! Tempted to head tot he drive-in tonight....
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:52:27 PM
Jamaaladeen!
Liz Bot 12:52:32 PM
Rooeadope Records is from Haddonfield?!!? Wot?
Liz Bot 12:52:51 PM
Ropeadope (typo)
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:52:51 PM
Ain't that crazy?
Liz Bot 12:53:07 PM
I had NO idea?! And I’m from Haddonfield!
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:53:26 PM
That why you've got the beat!
Pethie 12:53:28 PM
Can't wait for The Space to open up!
Liz Bot 12:53:42 PM
Jamaaladeen’s style is A+++
Liz Bot 12:53:54 PM
Haha, Dan!
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:54:02 PM
Stopped in the Space recently,, so I could watch all the hard work...
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:54:33 PM
"WPRB is not new to this, they are indeed true to this..."
Liz Bot 12:55:05 PM
Jamaaladeen hand-selected some nice outfits for Blacksberg and Nick!
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:55:07 PM
Jamaaladeen in Morocco!
Dan Ruccia 12:55:31 PM
Some day, I want some small fraction of Jamaaladeen's glasses game (and style in general)
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:56:31 PM
Yeah, Jamaaladeen's Boutique, The Red Room seems to be the place people who appear on stage go to get that special piece...
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:57:02 PM
Dan, Jamaaladeen would be glad to coach you through this process...
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:57:30 PM
His passion is going to European flea markets to hunt that stuff down...
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:58:36 PM
When he first came to the WPRB studios I was telling him about the Rec Ex and he said, "What I really want to know is where the thrift shops and consignment stores are!"
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:00:31 PM
(Jon Solomon cameo for luck)
Liz Bot 1:04:04 PM
Haha, I can just picture Jamaaladeen scouting out all the thrift gems of Central Jersey!
Brian D (2021 Donor! u can too!) 1:07:09 PM
Jamaaladeen wow. Great sounds. Transported to another land on that one.
Liz Bot 1:08:23 PM
Enjoying these harmalodics
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:08:54 PM
Yeah, that Ornette cut in an all-timer for me...
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:09:49 PM
Yeah, the Roots had Jamaaladeen on the Tonight Show a few years back. Turns out they've know Jamaaladeen since their beginnings...
Liz Bot 1:10:46 PM
I’ll bet! Bet they’ve known him since at least their CAPA days
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:12:33 PM
I think Jamaaldeen played a part in the Roots first European tour...
Liz Bot 1:13:13 PM
Saw Mary Halvorson perform with Jessica Pavone a couple times back at the Avant Gentleman’s Lodge! Miss AGL, I-House and Tritone! So many great jazz shows at those venues, and great overall vibe.
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:14:39 PM
I worke at a much-less free non-commercial station in Philly,in 2000 where a was able to sneak on a few minutes of the first Sonic Liberation Front record. Keven Diehl happened to be listening and we've been friendly since....
Liz Bot 1:16:03 PM
Speaking of Tritone, where I saw Calvin Weston and Jamaaladeen and so many others, it was just the anniversary of Rick D’s passing this week. 14 years it’s been
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:16:04 PM
Yeah, I don't think I've ben as hopped up following an artist since Prince (re: Halvorson. I been kinda floored by all she's done in the last decade.
Liz Bot 1:16:59 PM
Mary’s Code Girl albums are so good
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:17:19 PM
Yeah, RIP Rick, Tritione was my main hang when I arrived back from the west in 2000. Miss him and all the music he supported.
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:18:14 PM
The last CODE GIRL LP was my big X-Mas present form my wife. The Wyatt stuff really put it over the top...
Liz Bot 1:18:24 PM
Yeah, I used to see you in there. I think you had a Tom waits Night if memory serves? I lived 2 blocks from the Tritone back then
Liz Bot 1:19:03 PM
Artlessly Falling is amazing. I’m a huge Robert Wyatt fan. Amazing she pulled him outta retirement!
Brian D (2021 Donor! u can too!) 1:20:00 PM
Rick D was a Philly presence. Sorely missed. Way too soon.
Liz Bot 1:21:07 PM
Walls and Roses is my favorite track with RW
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:23:07 PM
No Tom Waits night! No regular gig there, though I guested and played a few gigs with bands. And speaking of Sunny Murray, I played on a gig with him there and played Albert Ayler's Summertime before his set. He finally sat down and played along on the drums, a real moment for me...
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:24:29 PM
The Sunny Murray interview I did on PRB, and the Krisstofferson interview I did on KUSF, are my great lost interviews., I'm always hoping to find someone who taped their broadcasts...
Liz Bot 1:28:35 PM
Dan, wow! That sounds like an amazing night! I remember seeing you at gigs there. I wonder who did the Tom Waits night. I did some Sugar Town DJ nights there booked by Sara Sherr, one with Paradise Island, which was Jenny Hoyston from Erase Errata, and a couple others. Didn’t you DJ there at some point though? Maybe not regular recurring DJ night, but I thought I saw you DJ there at some point!
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:30:44 PM
Joel had that night, shall we call it "Rock T*TS". All-vinyl rock. I did that a few times. I had a monthly with a bunch of Spaceboy guys at the 700 Club for years...
Liz Bot 1:30:51 PM
I remember yakking with John Stanley and Jack M and you back at Spaceboy not long after you moved back East and Jack did some nights at La Tazza with my upstairs neighbor at the time, Karen Jagelle! Maybe I’m thinking of you DJing with Jack Monaghan
Liz Bot 1:31:17 PM
Yeah! At 700! Right! Okay, I spent a lot of time there back then!
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:31:19 PM
A snippet of unreleased Zankel there, with Crispell and Wm Parker...
Brian D (2021 Donor! u can too!) 1:31:19 PM
Modern Drunkard magazine had a great piece with Rick D. Cocktail culture independent publication with some really fun articles n features. I think the author went to Phila and hung out w Rick for 24 hrs or so all night long involved. And they tested out a special micro filter gadget with cheap booze.
Liz Bot 1:31:58 PM
And then Karen J and Jack had some event at La Tazza. I guess Karen DJed and Jack’s band Tremolo played. Wow, loooong ago memories!
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:32:14 PM
Yeah, me and jack were running buddies in the day, I lived a couple blocks from him and Melissa...
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:33:38 PM
Yeah, I did the after hours thing with Rick a couple times, the kind of wild times I don't have often anymore...
Liz Bot 1:34:39 PM
Karen was so nice, I hear from her sometimes, and she did an event with Jack and later helped put out Rob Mazurek’s albums, so she put me in touch with him and he did a live set on Doubleplusgood with Black Goat Ensemble ages ago
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:35:22 PM
Wow, cool with the Rob Mazurek!
Liz Bot 1:35:33 PM
Space Boy- Where basically all of my income went in my early adulthood!
Liz Bot 1:36:05 PM
Yeah, I wish I had the DAT of that set still!
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:36:22 PM
Being able to sort through every one of Spaceboy's new releases (I did a newsletter at one time) was a great experience...
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:37:46 PM
Saw Bobby Zankel's Big Band at Tritone quite a bit. Love that big band sound vibrating through your body live...
Liz Bot 1:38:38 PM
Rob M & Steve Swell were so nice and then their van broke down after the set when they were trying to leave the station! I felt so bad for them! They had to bunk down in Princeton for the night! Rob not long after played Silk City in support of his Frankenstein album and gave me a buncha while records while there, which was really nice. Love those guys!
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:41:20 PM
The other half of Chicago Underground, Chad Taylor seems like an easy-going guy as well...
Liz Bot 1:42:14 PM
I run into John Stanley & Robert Drake around town all the time, but I wonder whatever happened to Spaceboy Scott ?
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:42:50 PM
A friend once introduced me to a guy by saying, "This is the guy who plays Cecil Taylor on the air at 12 noon!"
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:43:44 PM
Spaceboy Scott undoubtedly suffered some "major Tom" like fate...
Liz Bot 1:43:45 PM
Haha!
Liz Bot 1:48:00 PM
Re: Scott, ha!
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:48:23 PM
oh m goodness!
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:49:41 PM
or I mean pledge.wprb.com
Liz Bot 1:50:18 PM
There we go! Where else can you hear this?!! Nowhere!
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:51:48 PM
"Trash" also a great song by The NY Dolls....
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:52:19 PM
Jason Kao Hwang: Born to do pledge spots!
Dan Ruccia 1:52:33 PM
Wow, I have always said his name wrong
Brian D (2021 Donor! u can too!) 1:52:37 PM
How do you call your loverboy? My sweet trash whoa whoa...
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:52:50 PM
Ha!
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:53:39 PM
The best part of doing this project, listening to my favorite artists pronounce their names correctly...
Brian D (2021 Donor! u can too!) 1:53:46 PM
Former band of mine did a Twangabilly ish version of Trash for a very short time.
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:54:24 PM
I've performed it in my house solo numerous times. Often on trash night.
Pat in South Philly 1:54:32 PM
Hey Dan! Love that Cecil Taylor! Great show today. Awesome to hear all the musicians sings WPRB's praises
Brian D (2021 Donor! u can too!) 1:55:24 PM
To a very small crowd... of the ants in the practice space at the Moose lodge. Don't know if we ever played it out. Covers were work ha! You had to really learn.
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:55:52 PM
Thanks! Much thanks to the artists who stepped up, I was moved to listen to their stories of what radio meant to them. Still more favorites ahead!
Brian D (2021 Donor! u can too!) 1:56:16 PM
Clam Caravan Clubbing sighting...
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:57:08 PM
My band in the 80s learned the number one song for every gig, hence I've performed Janet Jackson;s Miss You Much and Millie Vanilli's Girl I'm Gonna Miss You on stage...
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:58:06 PM
Pat from South Philly! We're neighbors!
Brian D (2021 Donor! u can too!) 1:58:09 PM
In a better universe NY Dolls would be on Sesame Street performing Trash w/ Oscar....
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:59:07 PM
Funkadelic seems like a Sesame Street no brainer...
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:00:23 PM
Something from the massive, epic (10 CDs) latest fro Wm Parker, who was a fantastic guest ears ago....
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:00:41 PM
ears ago AND years ago...
Brian D (2021 Donor! u can too!) 2:00:53 PM
Another band almost did Hey Ya for fun. That is a slight challenge. I think that is a 22 beat pattern (or 2 11s). Count it as 5 measures of 4/4 and then a measure of 2/4 for best results i think
Dan Ruccia 2:01:00 PM
I think he would appreciate that typo
Brian D (2021 Donor! u can too!) 2:02:11 PM
O... Geo Clinton & Co. hanging in that neighborhood would have been perfect!
Dan Ruccia 2:02:36 PM
I was listening to the disc with the harmonica player last night and realized I really don't like jazz harmonica...
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:03:31 PM
Parker exhibited a very sly sense of humor during the time we spent together (we drove up and back from Philly). He also talked about falling in love with foreign cinema as a kid, he said The Bronx was the very last stopping point for foreign prints that played all the other boroughs first...
Liz Bot 2:03:41 PM
I second Clamour Pat’s sentiment about the artist testimonials! They’re a lot of fun to hear interspersed throughout the show!
Brian D (2021 Donor! u can too!) 2:04:41 PM
Yes Pat is spot on. The commentary really brings it home! So relevant to the show and the drive and the station
Dan Ruccia 2:04:46 PM
I just got a copy of his new biography but haven't had a chance to start reading yet. I've heard good things about it, though
Dan Ruccia 2:05:03 PM
And I agree with Lizbot about the artist testimonials!
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:05:08 PM
Tying to thread together, I REALLY like jazz harmonica, particularly Toots Thielemanns, forever mesmerized by his playing on the closing theme of ....Sesame Street.
Brian D (2021 Donor! u can too!) 2:05:58 PM
That is a mean lean funky band the Sesame Street Band.
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:06:12 PM
Hope someone else gets some use out of these spots, I edited them slightly so they don't mention my show specifically...
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:07:01 PM
I remember watching old Sesame street bit where it would just be kids riding around on spider bikes to free-ish jazz...
Brian D (2021 Donor! u can too!) 2:09:19 PM
Not enough bass harmonica in music anymore. ( S&G "The Boxer ". Quincy Jones "Sanford and Son")
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:09:23 PM
This Elsa Nilsson, LIGHT IS DARK IS is one of my favorites of the year, great tunes, great playing, great arranging...
Brian D (2021 Donor! u can too!) 2:10:14 PM
I remember you played this! Great musical dialog!
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:10:33 PM
What I used to think of as an ubiquitous style of harmonica playing, turned out to be the ubiquitous Mr Thielesman...
Brian D (2021 Donor! u can too!) 2:11:33 PM
O ya. Stevie and Toots T. have a way with the harp. Toots T pops up on so many recordings
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:12:35 PM
I was really hoping to get more woman musicians in the mix, the amount of talent out there has never been greater, but alas, only Elsa got back to me....
Liz Bot 2:13:04 PM
Dan, you mentioned posting the spots recently. Did you share em yet?
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:13:13 PM
Yeah, Stevie is the other iconic 70s harmonica stylist...
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:14:56 PM
I gave them to Dante, I don't think we've figured how to share them, but I could sen the folder to you or anyone interested...
Liz Bot 2:16:14 PM
Sesame Street and some of the guests on 3-2-1 Contact (one episode in particular where Susan Ciani demonstrated a Buchla synth) absolutely influenced my music tastes! That bizarre gentle experiment cow song from early Sesame Street years and a terse song that scared by enthralled me with their segment about a steel beam factory- I think that 30 second piece is deeply imprinted on my brain!
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:16:37 PM
2/3rds of Thumbscrew on today's show!
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:17:15 PM
Great to see Ciani's name and music still floating around these days...
Liz Bot 2:17:24 PM
Dan, I’d be interested! I made a bunch of station IDs during the pandemic that I can share with you if you’d like. I posted a wetransfer link to them once on the staff page months ago but that long since expired
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:17:38 PM
I originally just wrote her off as a new-ager...
Liz Bot 2:17:49 PM
Yes! Ciani’s latest album made an appearance in DNE over the summer!
Commie Francis 2:19:21 PM
one station ID that didn't make it to our home studio ID stash that i love is dismemberment plan's one about how great wprb is
Liz Bot 2:19:42 PM
To be honest, I like Laurie Spiegel synth compositions more, as far as female synth composer contemporaries, but Ciani pulled me into that world first when her appearance on public television. First time I ever saw a women playing a synth, and this was a big Buchla synth from the 70s. I thought it was so cool!
Commie Francis 2:19:51 PM
where they talk about crying when they lose reception in the van and then repeatedly say if you don't support wprb SCREW YOU
Commie Francis 2:20:35 PM
not meaning financial support obvs, just being supportive of cool weird radio
Liz Bot 2:22:18 PM
It wasn’t a music easel, as cool as those are, because I they have a distinct and colorful look. It may have been a 700, though those came out in the 80s. That episode felt like a 70s rerun when I saw it in the 80s, but could’ve been new
Liz Bot 2:22:48 PM
Commie, oh man, yeah. Haven’t heard that one in a long while!
Liz Bot 2:23:47 PM
Looking forward to hearing all the old IDs again that weren’t salvaged and sent out to us at the beginning of the pandemic
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:25:46 PM
I'm looking forward to exchanging a disc from the library I recently noticed was mistakenly swapped for one of my own. That'll be a special day...
Commie Francis 2:26:44 PM
haha i bet Dana K's peel sessions CD is still hanging on a thumbtack on the bulletin board
Brian D (2021 Donor! u can too!) 2:27:03 PM
That D Plan ID is great Commie! .... we cry, softly...
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:28:47 PM
I worry if I won a "Genius" grant I'd start all sentences with the phrase, "As a genius..."
Commie Francis 2:29:26 PM
you know you are a wprb superfan when you have memorized station IDs
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:29:35 PM
...but Halvorson's playing really does evoke "genius" to me...
Commie Francis 2:29:41 PM
and Dan you certainly should.
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:29:50 PM
Ha!
Brian D (2021 Donor! u can too!) 2:30:52 PM
DAD.... I TOLD YOU TO STOP LISTENING TO WPRB! (Don't follow this person's advice please...)
Brian D (2021 Donor! u can too!) 2:31:35 PM
As a Genius, I have a theory, which is mine....
Liz Bot 2:32:24 PM
I cheered went Mary got the McArthur- None more deserving!
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:32:32 PM
It would go way overboard, like "As a genius, I'll be taking the last two slices of pizza..."
Liz Bot 2:32:48 PM
Ha!
Brian D (2021 Donor! u can too!) 2:33:22 PM
Ha!
Commie Francis 2:33:49 PM
tell the barista the name on the order is a. genius
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:33:53 PM
Thollem! He has something like a dozen records coming out this year, through Astral Spirits...
Liz Bot 2:33:57 PM
Commie, I get verklempt when I think of dustbunnies on the board and Dana’s lonely CD
Commie Francis 2:34:36 PM
i know, i want the poor studio to have some visitors!!!
Liz Bot 2:34:44 PM
Yay! Susan! Just watched a live stream of Susan Alcorn on the Fire Museum Presents 20th anniversary series of shows a month ago!
Brian D (2021 Donor! u can too!) 2:34:48 PM
....why don't you borrow the sound ... (or something like that in a Darth Vadery voice)
Commie Francis 2:35:12 PM
more than one person this drive has made me cry by posting a picture of the studio
Commie Francis 2:35:27 PM
hahah Brian I don't even know some of these!
Liz Bot 2:35:55 PM
Saw Susan play with Rosie Langabeer at the House Gallery in Fishtown a few years back, and Rosie played another one of those streaming Fire Museum anniversary shows
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:35:55 PM
.why don't you borrow the sound ..of the mid....
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:36:21 PM
I mean "borrow the sound...of the mind..."
Liz Bot 2:36:27 PM
of the mind, or the mid-i? Of the mid-Drive show!
Commie Francis 2:36:37 PM
my favorite new one is chatty lesley woods being like i don't know where princeton is but here in london we have covid
Liz Bot 2:36:55 PM
Haha, oh man.
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:37:01 PM
This Thollem/Susan Alcorn piece is pretty sublime...
Commie Francis 2:37:10 PM
i think she says "have a nice weekend"
Brian D (2021 Donor! u can too!) 2:38:17 PM
Capt Beefheart station id... love. "Hi kids! It's yer old pal...'. i can't do it justice
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:39:43 PM
"You know transcend time and space, all that rhythm.."
Liz Bot 2:39:53 PM
I love Susan’s live shows. Truly sublime sounds. Langabeer with Alcorn was excellent too back in the BeforeTimes. That March 3rd livestream had Susan solo and then Rosie L & Neil Feather live from Rosie’s blissfully Covid-free native New Zealand...so jealous but didn’t stop me from enjoying their performance!
Brian D (2021 Donor! u can too!) 2:40:00 PM
YES! THANKS DAN!
Liz Bot 2:40:38 PM
Brian D, I can just HEAR that Capt Beefheart ID in my head the moment you mention it
Commie Francis 2:42:51 PM
i wish i knew how to make my voice sound like siouxsie on her station ID
Brian D (2021 Donor! u can too!) 2:43:29 PM
James Brown feelin good .... so many ids
Commie Francis 2:43:43 PM
btw thanks to Laura, Charles, Alex from Brooklyn and 2 anonymouses for their donations!!!
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:46:37 PM
I'm guessing the two anonymous' are Joe and Jill Biden, who by coincidence both gave while listening in the car...
Liz Bot 2:48:50 PM
Naturally. Or maybe Major Biden took a moment out of his busy biting schedule to kick us a pledge!
Liz Bot 2:49:23 PM
Dan Blacksberg and also to an extent West Phila Orchestra brought the klezmer back big time.
Liz Bot 2:53:38 PM
Part of 1st Dog Major Biden’s new training regimen involves delivering pledges to WPRB. 💰 🐕
Liz Bot 2:54:04 PM
Major wants the shirt pledge.wprb.com 👕 🐕
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:54:17 PM
John Zorn had that great series, Radical Jewish Culture, that dove in to Klezmer sounds...
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:55:24 PM
Steve Erdman! What a character!
Shane Navoy 2:56:04 PM
I want to chime in before today’s show ends. I want to say often your shows are good or great, Dan. Today’s show was at a different magnitude or multiplying power. Thanks, again !
Liz Bot 2:56:13 PM
Oh absolutely! Blacksberg organized Zorn’s “Cobra” at the Rotunda for a couple of years. My husband and a lot of musician friends participated.
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:57:21 PM
Wow, thanks. Major thanks to all who gave and the musicians who heard my call to arms!
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:57:37 PM
Thanks Shane!
Shane Navoy 2:58:38 PM
Oh... you are welcome !
Tim Conheeney 2:59:05 PM
Thanks for doing what you do, Dan. Much appreciation from a long time listener.
Liz Bot 2:59:07 PM
Other show spaces I sorely miss: The old Avenue C The Stone, and the The New School The Stone! Great Zorn shows. Nick Millevoi played there. Saw some great Mark Feldman and Sylvie Courvoisier shows there shortly before it moved to the New School. Looking forward to going to the New School Stone location again when it’s safe!
Liz Bot 2:59:17 PM
Great show today, Dan! Thank you!!
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:59:21 PM
Erdman a fan of the great Bob Dorough. He's recently recorded with the great Lala Brooks
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:59:52 PM
Thanks Tim, nice to hear from you!
Tim Conheeney 2:59:53 PM
You've pushed the boundaries of my own musical tastes for sure!
Dan Buskirk (host) 3:00:14 PM
Yet, not too pushy, I hope!
Dan Buskirk (host) 3:00:32 PM
Sylvie Courvoisier! Thanks for hanging Liz Bot!
Tim Conheeney 3:00:51 PM
Hahah! Only when necessary.
Dan Buskirk (host) 3:00:53 PM
I'm off! Thanks again everybody, see you next week!
Brian D (2021 Donor! u can too!) 3:00:54 PM
Great show!
Tim Conheeney 3:01:00 PM
