Excellent show so far! I haven't listened too much to the orchestral side of Mingus, so I'm particularly enjoying this one.

This set demonstrates well the kinship of jazz and classical.

Thanks Bud. Mingus is the crossroads of American composition that Zappa further explores.

Dave & Bud, Mingus takes Ellington and Stravinsky sets the next standard.

Zappa is an excellent comparison. And even though he's stylistically very different I see Jonny Greenwood's orchestral music as fitting into the same mold.

Jonny Greenwood is a huge Mingus fan.

... although he's probably more influenced by impressionists and minimalists.

I don't think I knew he was a Mingus fan, but I'm not surprised.

I vaguely recall reading when Kid A came out he used Mingus as inspiration on the horn parts. "National Anthem" I think.

Everybody do yourselves a favor and listen to all of The Black Saint & The Sinner Lady if you haven't.
