Lizbot (host) 5:04:10 PM
Oh man, I was SO tempted to be in Erica's and Mickey's chats today, but I had to put this show together!
Lizbot (host) 5:04:32 PM
Heard part of Esoterica's annual Oscars show, though
Alan Pasnyk 5:05:46 PM
Heyyyyy LIZBOT! Hope you're recovered from the Pledge Drive
Lizbot (host) 5:06:14 PM
Hey Alan! haha, I did NOT sleep much those 10 days!!
Lizbot (host) 5:06:40 PM
Then I recovered, and then managed to become sleep-deprived again for today! Woo!
Alan Pasnyk 5:07:56 PM
I really want to know what kind of Batteries powered the "Bot cause you had so much energy on Readie's show...
Lizbot (host) 5:09:19 PM
haha, pure membership drive adrenaline!
Brian D (Donor) 5:09:34 PM
Yeah Eso Oscars show is a blast
Lizbot (host) 5:10:05 PM
@Brian D - I'll usually there at the studio in person for it! Next year!
Mark 5:12:01 PM
hi lizbot/ very little work gets done on thursday between esoterica & mickey shows and chats. and then we file into your chat room :)
Lizbot (host) 5:13:14 PM
Hi Mark! haha, as it should be!
Alan Pasnyk 5:14:25 PM
So far the music has been in "Mega-Bot" mode...Really coolstuff
Lizbot (host) 5:14:52 PM
@Alan - Thanks! Spastic today!
Mark 5:14:59 PM
I hope u saw the trailer that was released this week for the opening premiere film at cannes in July !
Lizbot (host) 5:15:58 PM
That last track is some insane reimagining of Beethoven's Third Symphony.
Lizbot (host) 5:16:28 PM
taking a chance on this chipmunk track because Austra's doing some really interesting stuff
Lizbot (host) 5:16:46 PM
@Mark - YES!!!!! Annette!
Lizbot (host) 5:17:12 PM
@Mark - You know I watched that trailer the moment I could!
Lizbot (host) 5:17:44 PM
I wish Cannes was streaming like Sundance did this year. THat's how I saw the Sparks Brothers doc on its premiere night
Mark 5:18:15 PM
haha ++ good movie club might have to do a outdoor group watch of it / quite a year for russell & Ron
Lizbot (host) 5:18:44 PM
seriously!! it's amazing! They've wanted to make a movie for DECADES, and suddenly, they have TWO!
Lizbot (host) 5:19:03 PM
Plus, I LOVE Leos Carax!
Lizbot (host) 5:20:33 PM
@Mark - Did you see Carax' "Holy Motors"?? I named my 2018...or 2019...I can't remember which!...Drive show after it. I can't remember if we discussed it here before. It's so good!
Mark 5:20:47 PM
yeah I’m not real familiar w him but i do want to see a sparks double feature/ the doc and their movie
Mark 5:21:30 PM
no and I’m surprised that film name didn’t register with me
Lizbot (host) 5:22:06 PM
In Holy Motors, he uses a character, Monsieur Merde, who I loved from the 2008 anthology film of shorts by various directors called Tokyo. Carax' was by far the most memorable!
Lizbot (host) 5:22:42 PM
If I had to pick a director to direct a Sparks movie, I'd pick Carax!
Bud Burroughs 5:23:03 PM
I actually saw Clan of Xymox at the TLA, back in the late 80s or early 90s! It was a very high-tech show for its time, in terms of sound and lights.
Mark 5:23:19 PM
haha just saw that his public name is an anagram of his real name :)
Lizbot (host) 5:23:30 PM
Hi Bud! Nice! I never saw them live
Bud Burroughs 5:25:02 PM
Towards the end they had some issues with a sequencer. They left the stage for a bit, and came back and said, "We have the technical problem, so we will do an acoustic to you."
Lizbot (host) 5:28:25 PM
@Bud - I like it when bands take tech difficulties like that in good stride!
Bud Burroughs 5:29:54 PM
Yeah, it was nice. I don't recall what they played acoustically, but it worked!
Lizbot (host) 5:30:13 PM
I saw a Momus show at the Khyber when he was touring for his Folktronica album and his shows are solo with a laptop. Poor dude's laptop powered off mid-show and he had to go borrow a charger! He just got a couple drinks at the bar while it charged!
Bud Burroughs 5:31:03 PM
Oops! Relying on technology has its dangers.
The Return of...Charlie Rose 5:31:18 PM
does anyone have any success stories of contacting a famous musician via Twitter? if so, do you think it was really them who responded, or just some PR person?
Lizbot (host) 5:32:02 PM
I don't know. I barely use twitter. I opened an account a long time ago, but hardly use it.
Lizbot (host) 5:32:16 PM
@Bud - Seriously! Put he was laid back about it
RobBoat from Maryland, kicking back 5:33:07 PM
Hello everyone! I'm here early today
Lizbot (host) 5:33:14 PM
Hi Rob!!
RobBoat from Maryland, kicking back 5:33:25 PM
Hi Lizboat!
Lizbot (host) 5:35:14 PM
@Rob- What's up?! How's post-Membership Drive mania treating you? I am not able to be on the chat 18 hours a day at the moment, like I was last week!
Mark 5:36:55 PM
after reading a bit more about carax it sounds super exciting / hopefully we’ll be able to discuss it sometime in july!
Lizbot (host) 5:37:22 PM
@Mark - Let's hope so!
Lizbot (host) 5:37:43 PM
see Holy Motors! Also, a very rewarding music interlude in the middle of that film!
Lizbot (host) 5:37:59 PM
It's like an intermission, but with a parade!
Mark 5:38:29 PM
i know i just read about it / gotta see how I can find it
Lizbot (host) 5:39:43 PM
I bought the Blu-ray of Holy Motors, I like it so much, but I'm pretty sure it's available on various streaming platforms.
RobBoat from Maryland, kicking back 5:39:47 PM
@Lizbot, I am skipping the 5 pm live videocast I faithfully watch, in order to catch up with work. But my (tele)work system flaked starting at 4:45. Once I finished the one thing I was working on, I logged out. Yes, it took 45 minutes, 1 reboot, and a dozen refreshes. ARGH
Lizbot (host) 5:40:00 PM
There's even a band that named themselves after Holy Motors!
RobBoat from Maryland, kicking back 5:40:44 PM
The Dia Prometido and the Officer songs are particularly nice
Lizbot (host) 5:41:02 PM
@Rob - Argh! THat's so frustrating! May as well kick back with this rendition of the Windmills of Your Mind on WPRB instead!
Mark 5:41:15 PM
tho esoterica added to all of our movie rewatching backlog w her show today ! I’ve got a couple on tap after double plus :)
Lizbot (host) 5:41:24 PM
@rob- thanks! Yeah, that Officer band is a fun listen
Brian D (Donor) 5:41:25 PM
Ooh is that a hammer dulcimer
Joe Moore 5:41:35 PM
Such a cool version of one of the coolest songs.
Lizbot (host) 5:42:13 PM
@Joe Moore - Hi! Yeah, I just found this one today!
RobBoat from Maryland, kicking back 5:42:50 PM
@Lizbot I didn't even recognize Dia Prometido's song as The Windmills of Your Mind that I know from the 60s
Lizbot (host) 5:43:08 PM
@Brian D - Yes! First time I heard/saw a hammer dulcimer was actually quite memorable - It was the Cranberry Festival in the Pine Barrens when I was a kid! Dulcimer was a hit. Cranberry ice cream? Not so much!
Joe Moore 5:44:08 PM
I had some best of Mancini album I think I got at a shop rite for like 4 dollars and it had that on it and I always thought I'd love to hear a "heavy" version of it - that was the "heaviest" i've heard so far!
Lizbot (host) 5:44:14 PM
@ Rob - Yeah, it's sneaky like that! Not that many recognizable phrases from the song until near the end
Alan Pasnyk 5:44:34 PM
@Rob I guess a lot of improvisation
The Return of...Charlie Rose 5:44:57 PM
is it better to have a band always with the potential to get back together (original lineup) like Smashing Pumpkins, Oasis, Third Eye Blind...or be stuck with same lineup forver? For example, Foo Fighters have kinda turned into mush.
RobBoat from Maryland, kicking back 5:45:04 PM
@Alan & @Liz, yep!
Lizbot (host) 5:45:07 PM
@Joe - Yes! Also, the Parenthetical Girls have a really nice cover of it I've played on ++good before
The Return of...Charlie Rose 5:45:24 PM
there's more "life" left in bands with controversy (assuming all members are alive/healthy)
Lizbot (host) 5:45:30 PM
@Alan- Yes, I think a lot of improvisation was going on in that rendition
Lizbot (host) 5:46:29 PM
@Mark - Which movies did you add to your "To Watch" list today during Sonic Bloom? She played soundtracks from a lot of my favorites!
Lizbot (host) 5:47:34 PM
@Mark - Esoterica clearly has a fondness for some of the same films as me! and a fondness of Harry Nilsson! I love Harold & Maude, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Rushmore, Medium Cool, etc.
The Return of...Charlie Rose 5:48:42 PM
is this song a b-side from "The Illusionist" movie?
Lizbot (host) 5:49:02 PM
Einstein on the Beach - Phillip Glass .
Lizbot (host) 5:49:11 PM
Mari Samuelsen is playing it
The Return of...Charlie Rose 5:49:29 PM
Phillip Glass...sounded familiar
Lizbot (host) 5:49:39 PM
haha, that transition!
Lizbot (host) 5:50:25 PM
I wanted something virtuosic going into something janky and lo-fi, and that did it!
Mark 5:51:06 PM
i just remembered the umbrella Cherbourg today from her playing today / I’m watching marie attoinette becuz i have the dvd & I’ll probably watch bonus features
The Return of...Charlie Rose 5:51:21 PM
WPRB always delivers with this kinda stuff
Lizbot (host) 5:51:40 PM
TR of Charlie Rose, indeed we do!
The Return of...Charlie Rose 5:51:46 PM
(depending on when you tune in)
Bud Burroughs 5:52:18 PM
During full performances of Einstein, the poor violinist has to sit onstage for 5 hours, dressed as Albert Einstein, and regularly playing these virtuosic interludes!
Mark 5:52:33 PM
btw could listen to knee play all day / so fantastic i used to have that glass Einstein box set long ago
Brian D (Donor) 5:53:18 PM
Robyn!
Lizbot (host) 5:53:45 PM
@Mark - Yeah, I really enjoyed that Marie Antoinette movie. I loved Lost In Translation. Before those, I wasn't so sure about Sofia Coppola because I didn't like The Virgin Suicides. And of course, she stank it up on screen with her acting in Godfather III! I'm glad she switched to directing!
Mark 5:53:56 PM
@bud have u seen einstein? I know u mentioned u were going to the cancelled annenberg show
Lizbot (host) 5:54:01 PM
@Brian D - Yes! I have;'t played this one on my show before!
Bud Burroughs 5:55:21 PM
Sadly no, but I have the Blu-Ray from a few years back. I've never gotten through it in one sitting, but it's fascinating!
Mark 5:55:34 PM
haha she was god awful in 3 :( lost in translation is great E played the end song from that one too
Lizbot (host) 5:56:08 PM
@Mark - I love when Bill Murray sings Bryan Ferry's "More Than This" at the karaoke bar!
Mark 5:56:42 PM
Einstein is so great maybe lizbot would consider playing the bed aria some show :)
Lizbot (host) 5:57:06 PM
@Mark - Ahhh, that can be arranged!
Mark 5:57:34 PM
yes ! Murray is amazing & so much of his stuff is improv
Lizbot (host) 5:58:30 PM
@MArk - Yes! One of my favorite soundtracks is the Ethiopian jazz on Jim Jarmusch's Broken Flowers with Bill Murray! I play that soundtrack often. I know Esoterica played it today too
Mark 5:59:31 PM
that’s a jarmusch i haven’t seen thus i didn’t recognize
RobBoat from Maryland, kicking back 5:59:56 PM
@Lizbot, back to the post-membership-drive question, we did get kind of used to 2 djs on air, and their/your often manic energy.
Mark 6:00:42 PM
haha rob i was gonna mention that / just getting used to solo dj’s:)
Lizbot (host) 6:03:59 PM
@RobBoat - I have a LOT of fun co-hosting!
Lizbot (host) 6:04:53 PM
@Mark - Definitely see Broken Flowers. I can't separate that soundtrack from the film, so much of it is Bill Murray driving around, listening to those old classic Ethiopian jazz songs
Mark 6:06:21 PM
but u gotta stop w the movie recs/ I just looked up alphaville :) I can’t believe how much that inspired!!
Lizbot (host) 6:06:31 PM
@RobBoat - Also, I enjoyed everyone's altered screen names for the Drive! I see you're still RobBoat! We Are the RobBoats by Kraftwerk could be your theme
Mark 6:06:49 PM
My backlog grows every week :) !
Lizbot (host) 6:07:05 PM
@Mark - hahaha! You're gonna have a long scroll you'll need to unfurl and consult every time you sit down to watch a movie!
Lizbot (host) 6:07:52 PM
@Mark- Between Esoterica & I, the list goes to infinity
Mark 6:08:45 PM
haha talk to u at show end between u & esoterica no work will ever get done nit too much a bunch of books :)
Mark 6:09:19 PM
*mention
Lizbot (host) 6:10:38 PM
@Mark - ha, sorry we've roped you into Thursdays! I'm forever getting sucked into PRB's shows!
RobBoat from Maryland, kicking back 6:11:20 PM
@Lizbot, the screen names were the best! And, I have a red (tee) shirt and black jeans I could dress up in to approximate Kraftwerk
Lizbot (host) 6:13:10 PM
@RobBoat - Nice! Just add white make-up and lasers and brush up on your German!
Alan Pasnyk 6:13:28 PM
So Liz, I just had to decode your opening binary comment (01010101001010010100101) gives 2,790,565 I thought it might give 1033 which is 10000001001....I always seem to let my curiosity gt the best of me!
Kristin Belz 6:14:04 PM
not an insightful comment here, but just tuned in and haven't heard this cate le bon in a while and it sounds so good.
Lizbot (host) 6:14:59 PM
@Alan - Haha, I just mashed the keys quickly at the start of the show! No secret message hidden in that binary! But good to know 10000001001 is 1033! I think I looked that up once years ago! I have to use it again!
Lizbot (host) 6:15:54 PM
@Kristin - Yes! I hadn't heard it in a while either was digging it earlier today! Glad you enjoyed it!
Brian D (Donor) 6:17:03 PM
These guys coulda been Big Stars
Lizbot (host) 6:17:47 PM
@Brian D - Har. It's a crying shame! Did you see the Big Star doc? Heartbreaking and beautiful doc
Lizbot (host) 6:17:55 PM
esp the parts about Chris
Brian D (Donor) 6:18:05 PM
Eso chat and Harold & Maude scene w/Harold's mom filling out the form played out... what a great scene. And I found out that Vivian Pickles is still alive!
Alan Pasnyk 6:18:16 PM
Hey Liz this "watch the sunrise" sounds like a good track to watch the solar eclipse at sunrise on June 10..
Lizbot (host) 6:18:39 PM
WPRB screened it on a big-gish screen for the public at the Princeton Public Library years ago
Brian D (Donor) 6:18:43 PM
So glad she played the whole audio of that. Yes I saw the Big Star doc and read a book or 2. Heartbreaking and beautiful
Lizbot (host) 6:19:07 PM
@Alan - ooohhhh, nice! And The Carpet of the Sun by Renaissance would work well too!
Brian D (Donor) 6:19:40 PM
Yes. Always a good time to hear Annie H & Ren. play that one as the rays come down
RobBoat from Maryland, kicking back 6:20:12 PM
@Lizbot, natürlich. Si, por supuesto!
Lizbot (host) 6:20:45 PM
@Alan- Good to know about that eclipse! Putting it in my calendar! I happened to be in Portland, OR, not the path of totality, but close, for the 2017 eclipse. I hadn't planned my trip around it, it was serendipitous!
Brian D (Donor) 6:21:00 PM
Brrreeeaatthhe deeeepppp... and exhale....
RobBoat from Maryland, kicking back 6:21:09 PM
Ooh, there's a solar eclipse? See the carpet of the sun indeed
Lizbot (host) 6:21:37 PM
@RobBoat - All the German I know I learned from Kraftwerk, Nina Hagen and my German cousins who speak perfect English so they don't need to speak German around us!
Lizbot (host) 6:22:03 PM
THIS is ALSO good solar eclipse music right now!
Alan Pasnyk 6:22:14 PM
@Lizbot, Just a heads up to get your eclipse glasses before they're gone..
RobBoat from Maryland, kicking back 6:22:24 PM
@Lizbot, I don't know German at all. I am progressively better at Italian and Spanish
Lizbot (host) 6:22:43 PM
@Brian D - ha, yeah, this composer actually made some sort of deep listening/ Pauline Oliveros-style meditation stuff
RobBoat from Maryland, kicking back 6:23:10 PM
@Lizbot, the 2017 eclipse was pretty nice here in Maryland; Portland would have been even better
Lizbot (host) 6:23:39 PM
@RobBoat- I only ever studied Spanish, and learned more by practicing it when visiting a good friend who moved from Baltimore to Madrid - Used to see her every year!
Lizbot (host) 6:24:08 PM
@RobBoat - Portland was nuts! Those eclipse=safe glasses sold out everywhere and all hotels were booked up!
Lizbot (host) 6:24:58 PM
There were really cool shadows from the leaves of the trees in Portland during the eclipse. I took a lot of photos. Also got photos of the THOUSANDS of discarded cardboard eclipse-viewing glasses all over the park the SECOND it ended!
Mark 6:25:13 PM
one last movie tidbit: just learned last weekend that the hiway theater is doing outdoor showings at Abington arts this summer :) they had a real nice arts show there on Saturday
Lizbot (host) 6:25:50 PM
@Brian D - Glad you saw that Big Star doc. Oh my god, I LOVE Vivian Pickles!!!!!
Brian D (Donor) 6:26:11 PM
That was jusssttt what I needed after work LizB (Pauline Strom). And this Shake chocolate porter by Boulder Beer. Very relaxing.
RobBoat from Maryland, kicking back 6:27:39 PM
@Lizbot, I got to be much better at spoken than written Spanish b/c I worked with a couple dozen Latin Americans, and I listened to the news on the local Spanish-language station
Lizbot (host) 6:27:50 PM
@Mark - Good to know! I am on their mailing list, but I often skip over it, even though I really like their events. That live summertime music event was always on Thursday evenings, so I never could attend! But I'm glad they're doing the film screening on Saturdays! I love the sculptures on their grounds
Lizbot (host) 6:28:18 PM
@bRian D - I want that chocolate porter!
Brian D (Donor) 6:29:28 PM
It is silky good.

RobBoat from Maryland, kicking back 6:30:02 PM
I bet Portland was nuts. I was watching the eclipse online as it moved east across the PNW
Lizbot (host) 6:30:05 PM
@RobBoat - Some septuagenarian hispanic guy in line for the Van Gogh touring exhibit in...god, I dunno, '99? told me "Tres meses y un novio latino" and I'd be fluent! haha!
RobBoat from Maryland, kicking back 6:31:35 PM
Si, el habló la verdad! I kind of dated one of my coworkers and hung out with her brother and friends for a bit
Brian D (Donor) 6:34:03 PM
Hablo Espanol tambien RobBoat. I just need about a week or maybe 5 days or so to get it back in the tongue. Been a while. Only had a few chances to go to a Spanish speaking country for more than a week and use it. But it comes back fortunately.
Lizbot (host) 6:37:47 PM
@Brian D y RobBoat - I had the pleasure of visiting my sister-in-law in Costa Rica in March of 2019! That's the last time I got to REALLY practice Spanish, and man, I relied on it heavily! Had fun talking to cabbies! Now the sister-in-law, who gets to live in all these cool places because she's a wildlife biologist, is based in Puerto Rico! I hope I can get there when it's safe and I hope that's before her research grant there ends!
Lizbot (host) 6:38:35 PM
is....THIS....eclipse music???? maaaaaaaaaybe. in a black and white student art film where an eclipse turns people into zombies!
RobBoat from Maryland, kicking back 6:39:12 PM
@Brian D, it does come back. @Lizbot, very cool! My wife has visited Costa Rica four times but sadly I haven't been able to
Brian D (Donor) 6:39:16 PM
Bingo... magic word "Cabbies" or shuttle drivers, uber whatever. THOSE are the people to talk to yes. You know Spanish or at least try to pronounce correctly and give it some effort and cabbies/shuttle drivers will help your stay in a Spanish speaking country immensely! Opens up all kinds of doors!
Alan Pasnyk 6:39:29 PM
@ Lizbot I really wish that I had listened to what my Spanish teacher told me...
Lizbot (host) 6:40:44 PM
no such film exists, but those are the images popping into my head while listening to this track. Speaking of movies, zombies and the Jarmusch convo earlier in this chat, I was NOT a fan of his 2019 zombie movie, The Dead Don't Die! The sun DID figure into it in a big way, though!
Brian D (Donor) 6:40:53 PM
We had a great talk w/ a shuttle driver from Playa del Carmen to Tulum and another one on the way back days later. Really helped and opened the mind and let you know of what it is like to speak to someone that lives there. Super nice people too.
Brian D (Donor) 6:41:05 PM
Mexico that is
Lizbot (host) 6:41:07 PM
@Alan - What did they tell you? Was it earlier in the chat??
Alan Pasnyk 6:42:12 PM
@Lizbot.. I don't know... I WASN"T LISTENING :)
RobBoat from Maryland, kicking back 6:42:17 PM
Round about 2004 & 2005 we watched the tv show "Pepsi Musica" on one of the DC tv stations. It was an hour show, with a video countdown and interviews and live footage sometimes, and it influenced our music listening enormously
Brian D (Donor) 6:42:19 PM
one of the best releases of 2021 here. wau wau
Lizbot (host) 6:42:46 PM
@Brian D - 100%! Most of the cabbies I met knew minimal English and it was great practice during long drives! Especially when I stuck in a huge traffic jam returning to San Jose, CR from Uvita on a Sunday afternoon (When everyone leaves the beach in Uvites to return to the city,) and the driver introduced me to a bunch of Costa Rican punk!
Brian D (Donor) 6:43:13 PM
So cool Liz
Lizbot (host) 6:43:18 PM
@Brian D - Yes! Wau Wau!
Lizbot (host) 6:43:28 PM
kinda like "Bark" in Spanish! Grau Grau!
Brian D (Donor) 6:43:50 PM
Tico Punk . Love to hear some of that
RobBoat from Maryland, kicking back 6:43:51 PM
@Lizbot, can you recommend a Costa Rican punk band?
Lizbot (host) 6:44:20 PM
@Alan- haha! I liked MOST of my Spanish teachers, thankfully. One was off her rocker and cut a student's long hair in class during a mental breakdown, but that's another story!
pethie-ish 6:44:37 PM
Love this Colourbox!
Lizbot (host) 6:44:51 PM
@RobBoat - I wrote em all down! Gotta find my notes from that trip! I did play a couple after that trip on my show
Lizbot (host) 6:44:55 PM
Hi Peth!!
Lizbot (host) 6:45:09 PM
Yeah, I love these sorta detuned chords
RobBoat from Maryland, kicking back 6:45:42 PM
@Lizbot, your teacher did what??!! & I hope you find those notes soon
Lizbot (host) 6:45:49 PM
@RoBBoat - Whoa, I gotta find old episodes of "Pepsi Musica"!
pethie-ish 6:46:37 PM
Hey Lizbot!
Lizbot (host) 6:47:17 PM
I loved your Drive show, Peth!
RobBoat from Maryland, kicking back 6:47:43 PM
@Lizbot, good luck! A year or two ago I tried to find some from that time period and it was hard.
Lizbot (host) 6:48:20 PM
@RobBoat - This was on a D.C. public access station?
RobBoat from Maryland, kicking back 6:48:51 PM
But my favorite episode contained an interview where it looked like the interviewer was madly in love with the musician she was interviewing, one chair away
Lizbot (host) 6:50:23 PM
@RobBoat - Well, it happens! Remember when Michael Hutchence of INXS was on The Big Breakfast and Paula Yates fell for him and they became a couple! They were just flirting on screen that whole interview
Lizbot (host) 6:50:47 PM
@RobBoat - Not that that story had a happy ending, or anything!
RobBoat from Maryland, kicking back 6:51:02 PM
@Lizbot I think it was on the US network Telefutura (or another network). I'm Googling and it looks like the moniker "Pepsi Musica" has been used for a variety of music thingies over the years
Stevie P 6:51:41 PM
Hey Lizzie B
Stevie P 6:51:47 PM
Love this song
Lizbot (host) 6:51:48 PM
@RobBoat - Huh, gonna look for it later
Lizbot (host) 6:52:02 PM
Hi Stevie P! Yes, one of my fav XTC sonfs
Lizbot (host) 6:52:06 PM
sonffffs
RobBoat from Maryland, kicking back 6:52:58 PM
@Lizbot, I don't remember the INXS story. The Pepsi Musica interview, I was smiling during that whole segment. The interviewer was lusting after the musician. I have no idea what happened afterwards
Lizbot (host) 6:54:02 PM
@RobBOat - makes for an entertaining interview! Maybe they knew each other and were pretending not to!
The Return of...Charlie Rose 6:57:20 PM
I can't believe there are still some Foo Fighters songs that make it into Top 40...there are definitely some recent Smashing Pumpkins or Third Eye Blind releases that are more thought provoking or creative
Lizbot (host) 6:57:26 PM
VALE! HERE are the aforementioned Costa Rican (Tico) punk bands I found out about from a cabbie on my 2019 CR trip! (Super glad I found my notes!): SEKA - this one is my favorite of them. EL GUATO. BAND EDEMIA. ITAVO.
RobBoat from Maryland, kicking back 6:57:42 PM
@Lizbot, that occurred to me during this conversation. The host, Karla Zelaya, was and I think is an actress
pethie-ish 6:58:11 PM
Thank you so much! Hey, this Slapp Happy makes me think of The Worried Waltz...sniff sniff.
pethie-ish 6:58:31 PM
I miss Thomas!
RobBoat from Maryland, kicking back 6:59:17 PM
Oh wow I forgot that this song was originally a Slap Happy song! I love the Pale Saints version from roughly 30 years ago
Lizbot (host) 6:59:30 PM
Peth, I know!! I miss Mr. Various' show a lot! Thankfully, I talked to him a bit this past year.
pethie-ish 6:59:56 PM
Hope he’s doing well.
Lizbot (host) 7:00:17 PM
@RObBOat - yes!
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 7:00:19 PM
Every time I see The Worried Waltzer, I try to pressure him into returning to the air. No luck.
Lizbot (host) 7:00:35 PM
this is for drum nerds
Lizbot (host) 7:00:43 PM
Hi Dave!
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 7:00:51 PM
Hey!
Brian D (Donor) 7:01:08 PM
Love this ID
RobBoat from Maryland, kicking back 7:01:48 PM
@Lizbot thanks for these Tico punk bands
Brian D (Donor) 7:01:59 PM
That first day we played that 9 beats in the space of 27 was like two weeks... then you went to your mother's house for 13 beats in the space of 4....
Lizbot (host) 7:03:38 PM
@Brian D - HA! nice ID mash-up!!!
Lizbot (host) 7:04:31 PM
@Brian D - My husband will really appreciate that mash-up since he suggested both those clips to make those IDs! They both originated from here!
Lizbot (host) 7:05:12 PM
@Dave - Oh, I've tried, believe me, I've tried! I am just glad Mr. Various is still making music!
Alan Pasnyk 7:05:19 PM
Whew! Glad to hear that Mr. Various is still alive and kickin', he used to say he'd be back unless he "dropped dead"
Lizbot (host) 7:06:02 PM
@Peth - Thomas seems to be doing alright! He's making music. He streamed the Philly Film Fest we used to always go to together. He recommended the Greek film, "Apples," which I enjoyed
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 7:06:08 PM
I try to mix in some of his work on my show.
Lizbot (host) 7:06:19 PM
@Alan - then he went off to "the land of soft pillows"
Lizbot (host) 7:06:55 PM
gonna play some bombastic Japanese pop now
Lizbot (host) 7:07:19 PM
ridiculous droppppp
Lizbot (host) 7:07:34 PM
simulated hand clap
Lizbot (host) 7:08:49 PM
@Dave - Yes, same here! I played Superfinemagneticparticle - Punchlineless Jokes - An Endless Day at the Negativity Cabaret on my April Fools show earlier this month!
Lizbot (host) 7:08:59 PM
I had Chicken Jokes lined up, too!
Stevie P 7:09:30 PM
liking bombastic Japanese pop.
Lizbot (host) 7:09:42 PM
My husband & Mr. Various/Thomas have been collaborating on music during the pandemic...
Lizbot (host) 7:10:08 PM
@stevie P - sometimes you gotta just embrace the J-pop! This song makes me happy
The Return of...Charlie Rose 7:10:43 PM
it's so crazy when I see someone post a song I first heard when it was only 100 views...now it's millions of views
The Return of...Charlie Rose 7:11:10 PM
if only music playing were an investment...
Lizbot (host) 7:11:38 PM
@TRo...Charlie Rose - Iknow that feeling
pethie-ish 7:11:43 PM
I had no idea he made music!
Lizbot (host) 7:12:34 PM
Pethie - Yes! Under a couple of names
Lizbot (host) 7:12:54 PM
An Endless Day at the Negativity Cabaret
Lizbot (host) 7:13:23 PM
superfinemagneticparticle is another moniker he's made music under
pethie-ish 7:13:44 PM
ǝʌɐꓷ-I listen to your show often, I wonder if I’ve heard his stuff! I’m intrigued!
pethie-ish 7:13:59 PM
Woah
Mark 7:14:42 PM
this takes me back to the tribute show / I’ve become so addicted to her music :)
Brian D (Donor) 7:14:53 PM
Cactus forever. Vive la cactus!
Lizbot (host) 7:15:44 PM
Mr. Various' "Punchlineless Jokes" is another one I played on my April Fools show. That one is under the band name superfinemagneticparticle
Lizbot (host) 7:16:22 PM
@Mark - I'm glad to know you've grown fond of Françoise Cactus!
Lizbot (host) 7:18:02 PM
Thomas once told me he makes music for dumpsters. Because he figures all his music will just end up in dumpsters or on the sidewalk.
pethie-ish 7:18:30 PM
Oh, Thomas.
Lizbot (host) 7:18:48 PM
I think this is a natural Thomas view, but also, I think it's also a result of buying dead people's music collections for decades!
pethie-ish 7:19:18 PM
Hah!
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 7:19:27 PM
Igor Cackle is one name he uses. The work can be quite subliminal.
Lizbot (host) 7:19:31 PM
grimmmmmm thoughts. That's why I'll bequeath my record collection to WPRB!
Lizbot (host) 7:19:52 PM
@Dave - Yes! Was getting to that one. Chicken Jokes track is under Igor Cackle
Lizbot (host) 7:20:05 PM
he uses a lot of film dialogue samples
Lizbot (host) 7:20:33 PM
particularly from Fassbinder films
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 7:20:46 PM
Also lock grooves and things in reverse.
Lizbot (host) 7:21:21 PM
yeah, he's definitely a fan of those!
Lizbot (host) 7:22:28 PM
Thomas is on The George Koreins and The Figurines from 2020 pandemic collaborative efforts.
pethie-ish 7:23:10 PM
Good to know!
The Return of...Charlie Rose 7:23:52 PM
sigh, I just realized the last time I was logged in here, I commented on "pray for DMX" as he was still alive...good or bad, his voice was recognizable to many, kinda like Billy Corgan.
Lizbot (host) 7:24:21 PM
@Peth - Thomas & my husband had a charming little excursion in Trenton one day about a year before the pandemic, visits the Trenton sights and sounds
Stevie P 7:25:03 PM
is Thomas the Tom from Friends of Tom fb group?
The Return of...Charlie Rose 7:25:34 PM
did Side B Radio/WPRB have any special set for DMX? j/w
Lizbot (host) 7:25:35 PM
@Stevie P - Friends of the Worried Waltz group
Stevie P 7:26:05 PM
who is Tom from Friends of Tom? I follow and comment there, but have no idea who Tom is
Lizbot (host) 7:26:33 PM
@Stevie, if that's what you're referring to! I dunno about this other, mystery Tom...
Lizbot (host) 7:26:49 PM
I guess you're in the Tom Tom Club
Stevie P 7:27:25 PM
only one thing to do: continue to be confused
Lizbot (host) 7:27:25 PM
@TRoCR - I dunno. Would have to check the playlists.
Lizbot (host) 7:27:36 PM
Stevie P - EXACTLY
Lizbot (host) 7:27:52 PM
@Stevie P - My bet is that he's Tom from MySpace
Lizbot (host) 7:29:01 PM
Tom from MySpace, Thomas of The Worried Waltz, and this Mystery Tom unite to form a triple threat MEGA TOM, and then start a tom percussion trio
Brian D (Donor) 7:29:14 PM
I am many years late to this Connan Mockasin guy here but this track Egon Hosford and video is a lot of fun for later: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AewoLLojss
Lizbot (host) 7:29:43 PM
gotta tip my hat to the lovable weirdos, and Gary Wilson sure is one
Brian D (Donor) 7:30:20 PM
Somebody said of that Connan vid in comments "sounds like some traditional Oompa Loompa folk music" - yes. Oh I love Gary Wilson so Liz. Thank you for playing this
Lizbot (host) 7:30:43 PM
@Brian D- oh yeah, I enjoy his shoegazey pop. I played Connan Mockasin's Feel Shy a few times on the show
Lizbot (host) 7:30:51 PM
yeah it did
Lizbot (host) 7:31:13 PM
I LOVE the way Gary is happily chanting "something deep in me went wrong"!

RobBoat from Maryland, kicking back 7:32:15 PM

Lizbot (host) 7:33:43 PM
@Brian D - YES. Creep-fi is a good word for Gary's particularly style of oddd

The Return of...Charlie Rose 7:47:20 PM

The Return of...Charlie Rose 7:48:08 PM

Lizbot (host) 7:48:40 PM
@Brian D - I adore Hidden Cameras. Saw them perform live once, at First Unitarian Church, around 2004 or 2005ish. Owen Pallett from Final Fantasy was one of the violinists in that group
