In Holy Motors, he uses a character, Monsieur Merde, who I loved from the 2008 anthology film of shorts by various directors called Tokyo. Carax' was by far the most memorable!

If I had to pick a director to direct a Sparks movie, I'd pick Carax!

I actually saw Clan of Xymox at the TLA, back in the late 80s or early 90s! It was a very high-tech show for its time, in terms of sound and lights.

Yeah, it was nice. I don't recall what they played acoustically, but it worked!

I saw a Momus show at the Khyber when he was touring for his Folktronica album and his shows are solo with a laptop. Poor dude's laptop powered off mid-show and he had to go borrow a charger! He just got a couple drinks at the bar while it charged!

Oops! Relying on technology has its dangers.

I don't know. I barely use twitter. I opened an account a long time ago, but hardly use it.

I bought the Blu-ray of Holy Motors, I like it so much, but I'm pretty sure it's available on various streaming platforms.

@Lizbot, I am skipping the 5 pm live videocast I faithfully watch, in order to catch up with work. But my (tele)work system flaked starting at 4:45. Once I finished the one thing I was working on, I logged out. Yes, it took 45 minutes, 1 reboot, and a dozen refreshes. ARGH

There's even a band that named themselves after Holy Motors!

The Dia Prometido and the Officer songs are particularly nice

@Brian D - Yes! First time I heard/saw a hammer dulcimer was actually quite memorable - It was the Cranberry Festival in the Pine Barrens when I was a kid! Dulcimer was a hit. Cranberry ice cream? Not so much!

I had some best of Mancini album I think I got at a shop rite for like 4 dollars and it had that on it and I always thought I'd love to hear a "heavy" version of it - that was the "heaviest" i've heard so far!

@ Rob - Yeah, it's sneaky like that! Not that many recognizable phrases from the song until near the end

is it better to have a band always with the potential to get back together (original lineup) like Smashing Pumpkins, Oasis, Third Eye Blind...or be stuck with same lineup forver? For example, Foo Fighters have kinda turned into mush.

there's more "life" left in bands with controversy (assuming all members are alive/healthy)

@Mark - Yeah, I really enjoyed that Marie Antoinette movie. I loved Lost In Translation. Before those, I wasn't so sure about Sofia Coppola because I didn't like The Virgin Suicides. And of course, she stank it up on screen with her acting in Godfather III! I'm glad she switched to directing!

@Lizbot, the 2017 eclipse was pretty nice here in Maryland; Portland would have been even better

@RobBoat- I only ever studied Spanish, and learned more by practicing it when visiting a good friend who moved from Baltimore to Madrid - Used to see her every year!

@RobBoat - Portland was nuts! Those eclipse=safe glasses sold out everywhere and all hotels were booked up!

There were really cool shadows from the leaves of the trees in Portland during the eclipse. I took a lot of photos. Also got photos of the THOUSANDS of discarded cardboard eclipse-viewing glasses all over the park the SECOND it ended!

one last movie tidbit: just learned last weekend that the hiway theater is doing outdoor showings at Abington arts this summer :) they had a real nice arts show there on Saturday

@Lizbot, I got to be much better at spoken than written Spanish b/c I worked with a couple dozen Latin Americans, and I listened to the news on the local Spanish-language station

@Mark - Good to know! I am on their mailing list, but I often skip over it, even though I really like their events. That live summertime music event was always on Thursday evenings, so I never could attend! But I'm glad they're doing the film screening on Saturdays! I love the sculptures on their grounds

Hablo Espanol tambien RobBoat. I just need about a week or maybe 5 days or so to get it back in the tongue. Been a while. Only had a few chances to go to a Spanish speaking country for more than a week and use it. But it comes back fortunately.

@Brian D y RobBoat - I had the pleasure of visiting my sister-in-law in Costa Rica in March of 2019! That's the last time I got to REALLY practice Spanish, and man, I relied on it heavily! Had fun talking to cabbies! Now the sister-in-law, who gets to live in all these cool places because she's a wildlife biologist, is based in Puerto Rico! I hope I can get there when it's safe and I hope that's before her research grant there ends!

Bingo... magic word "Cabbies" or shuttle drivers, uber whatever. THOSE are the people to talk to yes. You know Spanish or at least try to pronounce correctly and give it some effort and cabbies/shuttle drivers will help your stay in a Spanish speaking country immensely! Opens up all kinds of doors!

@ Lizbot I really wish that I had listened to what my Spanish teacher told me...

no such film exists, but those are the images popping into my head while listening to this track. Speaking of movies, zombies and the Jarmusch convo earlier in this chat, I was NOT a fan of his 2019 zombie movie, The Dead Don't Die! The sun DID figure into it in a big way, though!

We had a great talk w/ a shuttle driver from Playa del Carmen to Tulum and another one on the way back days later. Really helped and opened the mind and let you know of what it is like to speak to someone that lives there. Super nice people too.

Round about 2004 & 2005 we watched the tv show "Pepsi Musica" on one of the DC tv stations. It was an hour show, with a video countdown and interviews and live footage sometimes, and it influenced our music listening enormously

@Brian D - 100%! Most of the cabbies I met knew minimal English and it was great practice during long drives! Especially when I stuck in a huge traffic jam returning to San Jose, CR from Uvita on a Sunday afternoon (When everyone leaves the beach in Uvites to return to the city,) and the driver introduced me to a bunch of Costa Rican punk!
