jimbeaux 8:23:53 PM
it's EAUX kay! :) think ramps season may be over. I'm focusing on fungi!
sean burns 8:23:59 PM
Esoterica, I must say I have been a little apprehensive about tuning in after hearing AC/DC on your program about a month ago. It just totally disoriented my mind space as to what I expect to hear from WPRB. I'm sure I was not the only musical snob within those in the air that said oh my gawd.
Bryon Mollica 8:24:00 PM
Boyd and Bryon are on board
Esoterica (host) 8:24:22 PM
hi bryon!
sean burns 8:25:09 PM
So I'm kind of gingerly waiting back into the esoterica musical sphere. My delicate sensibilities shouldn't be too upset with the current theme of the show
Esoterica (host) 8:25:47 PM
hi boyd! such a great name
Esoterica (host) 8:25:57 PM
hi sean!
sean burns 8:26:00 PM
AC/DC- I dropped my hearing horn and reached for my heart medicine
Esoterica (host) 8:26:11 PM
why gingerly???
Stevie P 8:26:12 PM
Mah mama always said Esoterica's show is lahk a box of chocolates
Esoterica (host) 8:26:34 PM
haha loooove that sentiment
sean burns 8:26:41 PM
I fear that if I hear another AC/DC song it may become an earworm that I can't remove
Esoterica (host) 8:27:13 PM
haha no ac/dc tonight. what about kiss?
Esoterica (host) 8:27:24 PM
does that have that earworm effect?
Stevie P 8:27:36 PM
sean, who doesn't like to hear Dyn-o-mite in their head all night long?
sean burns 8:27:39 PM
I'm sorry, my musical standards would force me to flee if I hear kiss
sean burns 8:28:08 PM
I'm one of those snobs that stand up front to make sure the guitarist is playing the right stuff, and looking with the stain at the people with the lighters held high
sean burns 8:28:30 PM
Disdain not staying
Esoterica (host) 8:28:39 PM
so what do you think of this cover then??
-ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ-💀 8:28:42 PM
Just turn the volume down, no need to flee
Stevie P 8:29:06 PM
sean, are you also the guy who raises his hand at the end of a long presentation when we're all itching to go to the bar and the presenter says -- any questions?
Esoterica (host) 8:29:27 PM
i'm always itching to go to the bar
sean burns 8:29:38 PM
This is great actually... I think it was my preconceived notion of what esoterica consisted of and the utter shock of hearing an AC/DC song
Stevie P 8:29:40 PM
you and me both, e
-ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ-💀 8:29:40 PM
I’m already at the bar
Stevie P 8:30:02 PM

-ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ-💀 8:32:03 PM

Esoterica (host) 8:32:20 PM

sean burns 8:34:24 PM
I remember when I got sober driving around on New Year's Eve taking my daughter and her friends to various parties and places, and being stopped by the police three times and almost feeling happy I was stopped!
Esoterica (host) 8:34:41 PM
well, sean, little kids know that feeling, wonder at life, right? I realize...
sean burns 8:35:07 PM
They do for a time that's for sure. I had a daughter and unfortunately saw how soon peer pressure and life can turn on a young female

The Tom thing was a real head scratcher for me... until I finally noticed the giant letters WFMU on his fb group
sean burns 8:44:47 PM
Esoterica, regarding kiss... They are not good people. A girl I knew from high school was sexually abused by their crew back around 1977, and I can tell you some stories about what a hideous person gene and that outfit is
Esoterica (host) 8:45:05 PM
ew. well, i won't be playing that
Stevie P 8:45:17 PM
doesnt surprise me
Esoterica (host) 8:45:35 PM

Stevie P 8:45:52 PM
i was always skeeved out by gene and crew
Stevie P 8:46:05 PM
like, evil glam shitz
sean burns 8:46:37 PM
Here's a brief recap of one, since this might not be the place I'll keep it brief.
sean burns 8:48:02 PM
Casablanca records goes bankrupt. Warehouse and storage items become available from a storage unit. Al Munson and Richie Ranno, guitarist of the Casablanca band stars with a z by a bunch of kiss costumes and instruments That the band is not using since they are now out of makeup
sean burns 8:48:34 PM
Alan Ritchie start a string of kiss conventions that ran all around the country, with the Kiss museum showcasing their acquisition. Peter and Paul both play with their respective bands at different shows with these outfits in the background
sean burns 8:49:20 PM
They are aware they are there, when kiss decides to get in costume again they get a warrant of arrest for these guys for stealing their merchandise. Big expensive legal case, these guys would not have been showcasing boots, instruments, etc to the public if they thought there was something wrong
sean burns 8:49:50 PM
Anyway kiss got all their s*** back and instead of doing the right thing and saying I'd like to thank these guys for saving our heritage and not allowing it to be dispersed since Al or Richie wouldn't sell anything, they went the opposite way and called them thieves
sean burns 8:50:25 PM
So Al was the ultimate kiss fan and ended up with multiple sclerosis. He was crushed by the fact that Gene and Paul thought he was a thief. And about a month before he died, the family stage they phony phone call where Gene called Al up and apologized for calling him a thief and thanked him for saving all their stuff
sean burns 8:51:29 PM
That is kiss
Esoterica (host) 8:51:36 PM
omg that is heartbreaking
sean burns 8:51:49 PM
Kind of funny the background music for the story!
Esoterica (host) 8:51:57 PM
yeah
sean burns 8:52:33 PM
I still have things from that collection that Al had gotten out of the garbage. All that stuff would have been gone if it wasn't for these dedicated fans that loved those knuckleheads. And that was their reward
Bo 8:53:32 PM
Hi Esoterica!
sean burns 8:53:43 PM
It's kind of what I expect heavy metal people to be like. I can't imagine motley Crue starting a charity for abused teens
Esoterica (host) 8:55:13 PM
good evening, bo!
Rob from Maryland 8:56:40 PM
Oops, the station just went silent. And there's the oops music
David Shortell 8:56:42 PM
“Scarborough Fair” sure sounds a lot like Bob Dylan’s “Girl From the North Country”.
Bo 8:57:06 PM
Oops! I went and cursed the show :(
Rob from Maryland 8:57:22 PM
And Scarborough Fair is back
jimbeaux 8:57:22 PM
dang, hate this movie! ok we're back :)
sean burns 8:57:24 PM
Or girl from the North country sounds like Scarborough Fair, as it predates it by 200 years or so!
Rob from Maryland 8:57:47 PM
The stream is lost again
sean burns 8:58:05 PM
Sounds like me looking for a track on a vinyl album in poor light
Bo 8:58:25 PM
No stopping James Bell though!
sean burns 8:59:15 PM
Esoterica, not to beat a dead AC/DC horse or anything but I interesting factoid is that they were considered punk back in the early days. I have the early issues of John holmstrom's punk magazine and AC/DC had as much coverage as Richard hell or Blondie or anyone
Esoterica (host) 8:59:17 PM
crazy! how long were we off?
Bo 8:59:25 PM
Curse lifted!
Stevie P 8:59:28 PM
miliseconds
Esoterica (host) 8:59:47 PM
we are ok now with the stream? high winds in my area
sean burns 8:59:54 PM
Because when it's the early days of punk and you're just trying to come up with a definition, what's a better illustration then a bunch of screamers with a guy dressed in a grammar school outfit
Esoterica (host) 9:00:02 PM
phew
Esoterica (host) 9:00:17 PM
hi, rob!
Stevie P 9:00:22 PM

Brian D (Donor) 9:13:06 PM

Looking at sets that resemble doll houses all photographed straight on, stilted and strange dialogue... Very hard to slip into but I love it when I'm there

Usually you just watch something and there you are watching it. With Wes Anderson it's like, hey here's something, you better get into a certain frame of mind to watch it
Stevie P 9:13:54 PM
sean, you'd probably hate michel gondry films ;-)
sean burns 9:14:08 PM
Oh no no he is wonderful!
Esoterica (host) 9:14:11 PM
wes anderson is great for these pandemic times...just uplifting i find
sean burns 9:14:26 PM
I am not putting down Wes Anderson, I am saying I have to enter another state of perception watching his movies and it's worth it
Stevie P 9:14:36 PM
speaking of which.. DJE... got any Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind soundtrack stuff?
sean burns 9:15:01 PM
Michael gondry is like a 12-year-old mind given great resources to play with
Esoterica (host) 9:15:18 PM
what do you like, stevie p?
Esoterica (host) 9:15:25 PM
from eternal?
sean burns 9:16:00 PM
Wes Anderson's staging is like something you would do in a high school play but done to a high level of competence. And it works. People stand stiffly and enunciate, the end result is something you're thinking about 5 days later
Bo 9:16:26 PM
This is a gorgeous version of an amazing song, thanks Esoterica!

Not a musical but a great PRB memory that I have mentioned before: driving home at night from N Jersey back to Bucks Co, PA I tuned in and WPRB was playing the entire old record of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. I stayed in the parking lot a while after we got home.... listening for more. Had just seen the film recently too. And have to at least once every couple years.
-ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ-💀 9:31:12 PM

Yes, Esoterica, the 1970 Carl Reiner-directed “Where’s Poppa?” did star George Segal. There were significant bit parts by Paul Sorvino, Garrett Morris and Rob Reiner.

I never saw the 2005 film remake nor the modern stage revival of “The Producers”, but I understand that both removed the Dick Shawn character “Lorenzo St. DuBois”.

Stevie P 9:52:51 PM
hey dje... i was thinking about mikey wild and the magic lanterns
David Shortell 9:53:01 PM
WPRB reception was strangely poor as I drove around Colts Neck over an hour ago, but I did catch mention of “Big Night” starring Minnie Driver (whatever happened to her?) and Lee Ving, who played an important part in the 1985 flop “Clue”. As far as I know, none of the few people who saw “Clue” liked it. Yet it’s recently been revived at movie houses as if it were some sort of a classic! How can it be a classic when, 36 years later, it still hasn’t earned back any of the money it lost?
Stevie P 9:53:12 PM
it occurred to me that i first heard mikey wild on YOUR SHOW
Christine (>'-')> 9:53:19 PM
I'm also looking forward to Thursday's show 📻

Hearing “To Life” on this broadcast brought back memories of my big brother singing along to the Fiddler soundtrack album back when he acted in a small part in his high school’s production of that musical. I was brainwashed into memorizing all the damn lyrics!
