Thanks SOOO much for the Ry Cooder-Bill Monroe story. I wish I'd known that one when I wrote the biography Can't You Hear Me Callin': The Life of Bill Monroe, Father of Bluegrass (shameless self-promotion, sorry! LOL)

He's even a figure in the UFO world which is weird! Thanks to the Chavez Ravine album. (Ry Cooder, not Bill Monroe)

Re: Cooder ... he also did some memorable studio session work with the Rolling Stones that's on their Let It Bleed album.

Re: water buffalo. In India, not only do they get a large % of their milk supply from water buffalo, they eat them as well (since cows are 'sacred'). So a menu might have "Buff Chow Mein" instead of 'beef'.

Okay, here's a relevant fun little Bill Monroe-related anecdote that's in my Monroe biography -- In 1963 or 1964, two young friends from California journeyed to Bean Blossom, Indiana. Monroe had a little country music park there, often performing himself. One of them played banjo and wanted to audition for Bill's band. But he found "The Father of Bluegrass" so intimidating he didn't ask for a try-out. He returned home and played with a band that became the Grateful Dead. His name - Jerry Garcia.

@ Mark, thanks! Yes, I used to have the vinyl of Jamming With Edward, it's very cool with vintage Ry Cooder. I gotta get a CD or download of it.

Incidentally ... you may know that Jerry Garcia was a damn good banjo player. He got back to it again circa 1973 in a straight ahead but innovative California-based bluegrass band Old and in the Way. Their early in-concert albums are wonderful, check them out!

@ Mark -- Yes, the Jamming With Edward cover is a hoot! According to the album's Wiki entry, "Edward" was a nickname for pianist Nicky Hopkins, a frequent Stones collaborator, and he contributed the cartoon sketch artwork.
