Has anyone actually seen many cicadas yet?? I went to Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton on Sunday, full expecting to see loads of them, but no dice
Alan Pasnyk 5:10:08 PM
Brian can probably tell you that in Upper Bucks Pa. they usually don't arrive until August..
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 5:11:01 PM
The cicadas are starting to come out, but the main brood is around Princeton.
Lizbot (host) 5:12:41 PM
Hi Dave!
Lizbot (host) 5:13:37 PM
@Alan - Hmmmm. I remember 17 years ago at the station Brood X buzzing away as I walked to and from the station to my car. It felt like earlier in the season, but it might not have been.
Lizbot (host) 5:15:30 PM
@Dave - I figured Hamilton was close enough to Princeton that there might be a lot there, but I guess it's a little too far. I WANTED to get to Princeton on Sunday too, but I ended up having dinner at Grounds for Sculpture at Rat's Restaurant - FIRST time I've eaten at a restaurant- though outdoor seating - since before the pandemic. That place is pricey but the kid was getting hungry and I didn't want to deal with Princeton parking
Lizbot (host) 5:16:02 PM
Thankfully, since Rat's forgot about us out there for a long time, they comped our apps and our dinner was mostly apps
Alan Pasnyk 5:16:39 PM
At my parent's place north of Doylestown they would always come out near the beginning of August, every year...so you have plenty of time....
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 5:16:52 PM
Cicada distribution in NJ is spotty and very localized. I can hear them here in Plainsboro, but nearby in West Windsor - nothing. Best to go to Princeton.
Shane Navoy 5:17:11 PM
Hi there, Liz. Yeah... you have to be in the right "town" for that. You need old growth trees and hardly any construction over the years that disturbs them. Princeton fits those conditions.
Alan Pasnyk 5:19:57 PM
So if you're going to Princeton, just don't take a motorcycle, getting a 50 mph cicada in the face could be...Annoying!
Shane Navoy 5:20:30 PM
so, what is/are the call letters of that Asheville station you mentioned. I used to love hearing Greg Lyon on a Friday afternoon on PRB in the early 2000's.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 5:20:41 PM
There are some good maps online to show your the 2004 cicada distribution.
Lizbot (host) 5:21:08 PM
Hi Shane! Ah, gotcha. I remember them so distinctly from that summer of 2004, but I didn't go venturing around the towns outside of Princeton in Central Jersey, (just my parents' house in South Jersey when visiting there,) so I assumed they were all over Central Jersey. I'm in Philly, so we don't get many here!
Lizbot (host) 5:22:19 PM
@Shane - 103.3 Asheville FM https://www.ashevillefm.org/show/the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly/
Lizbot (host) 5:23:17 PM
@Shane - Yeah, for a stretch I was on WPRB after Greg and loved chatting with him. I miss listening to his show while driving to the station
Lizbot (host) 5:23:41 PM
@Dave - I am gonna check out said cicada maps post-show!
Lizbot (host) 5:24:35 PM
@Alan - Good point. Ew! Yeah, I read someone's account of mowing a lawn in Princeton the summer of '04 and inadvertently making a lawn chop-salad outta the Brood
Lizbot (host) 5:25:07 PM
I do want to actually get to Princeton soon! This is the longest I haven't been in Princeton - by far - in 20 years!
Lizbot (host) 5:26:00 PM
I assume some things are opening up. There was a free band performing in Palmer Square on Sunday, but it was right in the middle of our reserved Grounds for Sculpture time
Alan Pasnyk 5:26:36 PM
This "Melenas" reminds me of Frankie Rose
Lizbot (host) 5:27:10 PM
@Alan - hrmmm, I could see that
Lizbot (host) 5:28:40 PM

Alan Pasnyk 5:38:52 PM
Hi Christine! Looks like the Sat. nite ISS pass will be clouded out. Next best pass is next week on Wednesday eve....84 deg. high...
Christine ✔Broodin' Gen X 5:39:57 PM
@Alan, hi! 🛰 I was bummed to have the ISS flyover clouded over last night.
Christine ✔Broodin' Gen X 5:40:38 PM
@Lizbot, that would be quite a nightmare 😱
Christine ✔Broodin' Gen X 5:42:06 PM
@DTO, thanks for that link. I love that the genus name is Magicada. They're Magic✨
Lizbot (host) 5:43:06 PM
@Christine - Magicada?! Whoa!
Alan Pasnyk 5:44:26 PM
@ Christine, I was real sorry that you didn't listen to last week's Recherche, Readie went on at length to describe at how she followed my "instructions" and didn't see a thing!!! Course I saw it from downtown Philly, maybe Readie's location is too far from mine....
Lizbot (host) 5:46:12 PM
@Alan - Read's not that close to Philly
Christine ✔Broodin' Gen X 5:46:37 PM
@Alan, I was really sorry to miss Readie's show. I was kid-sitting and couldn't listen. Readie's tale of woe sounds like a great story.
Alan Pasnyk 5:49:57 PM
@ Christine, Since it was of no critical consequence, it was actually kind of funny, I emailed her the user and password for heavens-above.com for the Princeton area..
Christine ✔Broodin' Gen X 5:54:04 PM
@Alan, ISS sightings are like buses, right? 😄 Miss one, another one will be coming along later.
Christine ✔Broodin' Gen X 5:56:56 PM
Correction: that academic paper says the genus is Magicicada, not Magicada. I read what I want to see sometimes. Still, they're Magic™
Lizbot (host) 5:57:32 PM
But Christine, Magicicada is even better! It's like Magic Cicada right there in the name!
Alan Pasnyk 5:57:59 PM
@Christine, yes... Also I found a really useful website for clear night predictions, it's put out by none other than Princeton University, it's cleardarksky.com

Lizbot (host) 6:04:53 PM
Hey guys, a little tech check-in- Since my mic is being temperamental, I had to disconnect it and reconnect a bunch of times and play with the settings, so I wonder - Could you hear me alright that last mic break that just ended? Was it too loud? Too quiet? Any other noticeable issues/changes?
Alan Pasnyk 6:05:46 PM
@Lizbot, seemed ok here online
Lizbot (host) 6:05:59 PM
Thanks, Alan!
Christine ✔Broodin' Gen X 6:07:23 PM

@Christine, how are my multitudes? There are now so many on our tires (10 to 15) that in the 5-10 minutes it takes me to remove them and put them on a tree, a brand new one will land on a tire
Rob from Maryland & Brood X cicadas 6:24:27 PM
Hi Lizbot & Alan, the cicada army is marching north

Lizbot (host) 6:27:53 PM
@Rob & Alan - YES! And there needs to be a scene in said movie where a character I found standing upright and still, completely covered in cicada husks, and when someone tries to rescue them, they crumble to dust
Lizbot (host) 6:28:30 PM
@Rob - Tell them to march faster, post-haste!
Rob from Maryland & Brood X cicadas 6:28:45 PM
That's an image, Lizbot. And I will tell them to march faster
Lizbot (host) 6:29:57 PM
@Rob - wow. I just listened to the Brood recorded in DC link and their sound in that recording really reminds me of the Forbidden Planet soundtrack
Rob from Maryland & Brood X cicadas 6:30:47 PM
@Lizbot, I see that you played Melenas before I arrived tonight. They were one of the bands I listened to the most last year.
Rob from Maryland & Brood X cicadas 6:31:30 PM

Rob from Maryland & Brood X cicadas 6:33:07 PM
@Lizbot, you sounded perfectly fine on your most recent mike break
Lizbot (host) 6:33:29 PM
@ROb - Yeah, I believe Melenas made my Best of 2020 2-parter show!
Alan Pasnyk 6:35:38 PM
@ Rob, Forbidden Planet is worth checking out for the special effects and also story line, considering what they had to work with back then, I've seen it several times...
Lizbot (host) 6:35:45 PM
@Rob - The original Forbidden Planet is great! It has a young Leslie Nielsen, pre-Naked Gun movies. It is from 1956 and the experimental electronic soundtrack by husband and wife duo Bebe and Louis Barron was considered groundbreaking at the time and is still waaaay out there!
Lizbot (host) 6:36:07 PM
(I say the original because I wouldn't be surprised if that movie was remade at some point)
Lizbot (host) 6:36:40 PM
@Alan - I find it so much more inventive and original than other sci-fi/space movies of that era
Rob from Maryland & Brood X cicadas 6:37:24 PM
@Lizbot, I missed/forgot (sorry!) your best of 2020 show.
Alan Pasnyk 6:37:51 PM

Rob from Maryland & Brood X cicadas 6:49:40 PM
Movie idea: The Attack Of The Lizbot Cicadas
Lizbot (host) 6:49:52 PM
In this scene of "Magicicadas: The Reckoning," by yours truly director Killbot, the cicadas gaze upon the descruction they've wrought as they lounge sleepily on Montague Terrace, basking in the baroque pop of Scott Walker (applies to the previous track!)
Rob from Maryland & Brood X cicadas 6:50:08 PM
... or The Attack Of The Killer Cicadas
Rob from Maryland & Brood X cicadas 6:50:56 PM
That is baroque pop indeed
Lizbot (host) 6:51:32 PM
The earth is at this point fully ensconced in cicada nymph husks and humanity has been overcome by THE BROOD
Lizbot (host) 6:52:26 PM
I'm not sure what would be happening during this rather chill and upbeat krautrock-influenced Ganger song....
Christine ✔Broodin' Gen X 6:56:21 PM
Maybe during this Ganger track, the camera travels up, up, up into orbit to reveal the only place where humans are safe from the cicadas: the International Space Station 🛰

I'm forever playing with the settings on this thing. My mixer program randomly stops detecting it, and I'm also in a room not intended as a studio, unlike our nice soundproofed beloved WPRB Studio, so I'm always fiddling with this thing!

Yallo, naughty 'Botters!
jimbeaux 7:27:52 PM

Lizbot (host) 7:28:09 PM
This quote from Belle & Sebastian's "I Know where the Summer Goes" goes out to the MYSTERY POSTCARD COLLAGE ARTIST who ha been sending us DJs excellent collage postcards!: "Where the boy who made records out of postcard messages"
Lizbot (host) 7:28:14 PM

Lizbot (host) 7:29:18 PM

Christine ✔Broodin' Gen X 7:29:39 PM
*Mystery POSTCARD Artist*
Lizbot (host) 7:29:39 PM
I only wish I could see them again, preferably at The Mann, soon!
Christine ✔Broodin' Gen X 7:30:16 PM
@Lizbot, that's a happy thought!
jimbeaux 7:30:18 PM
Yo Christine ! This IS a beautiful song. "Potcard" artist...HA!
Lizbot (host) 7:30:40 PM
haha, the overheated hair, And the denim hard riff of the Irish Troubadour, I think I relate...at least to the overheated hair part!
Lizbot (host) 7:31:04 PM
Maybe I should cue up Postcard by Liechtenstein!
Lizbot (host) 7:31:19 PM
except that that song would be a JOLT after this set!
Christine ✔Broodin' Gen X 7:32:14 PM
I'm happy tonight because right now in a cemetery in West Philly, Sun Ra Arkestra is playing. That's a magical reality✨
jimbeaux 7:33:23 PM
That would be incredible! Arkestra amazing outdoors.
Lizbot (host) 7:33:45 PM
@Christine- Yes!! Happy 97th Birthday to Marshall Allen!
Lizbot (host) 7:35:58 PM
@jimbeaux & Christine - I love the Arkestra AND I love The Woodlands Cemetery, which is gorgeous, but of course last night's show was rescheduled due to the weather and I can't be there tonight because I'm here with you, but that's okay! I've seen the arkestra a bunch of times -they are based practically in my backyard! A lot of friends are at that show tonight and an equal number couldn't make the rescheduled time
Christine ✔Broodin' Gen X 7:36:07 PM
HBD, Marshall Allen🎉
Lizbot (host) 7:36:37 PM
97 and still going strong!
Christine ✔Broodin' Gen X 7:37:02 PM
@Lizbot, let's hope for future opportunities to hear the Arkestra this summer/fall
jimbeaux 7:37:52 PM
Used to live near them in Germantown, so would see them play in the park.
Lizbot (host) 7:38:18 PM
I even saw them perform with Yo La Tengo, doing "Nuclear War" at the Troc...god, more than a decade and a half ago. The song that asks the crucial and pressing question: "Where would you be without your ass?"
Lizbot (host) 7:38:45 PM
@jimbeaux Yes! I am a NW Philly dweller!
sean burns 7:39:42 PM
That frogs song... I could hear that being done by the good, pre-disco Bee gees
Lizbot (host) 7:39:52 PM
oh man! my mic DIED AGAIN. Good god, TWICE in one show. I have to reevaluate my entire set-up!
Lizbot (host) 7:40:12 PM
Hi Sean- Yeah, I could see that!
jimbeaux 7:40:36 PM
Miss that neighborhood! Was on Greene St 20 yrs ago, but lived in a few other places nearby.
Lizbot (host) 7:41:03 PM
@Sean - Of course it would be funnier if The Bee Gees covered a later Frogs song!
Mark 7:41:04 PM
haha I’m actually at the Ra show / been conserving battery / great venue & show
jimbeaux 7:41:23 PM
MARK!
Lizbot (host) 7:41:44 PM
@jimbeaux - nice ! I'm around Greene St all the time. Vax clinic for 12-15 year-olds going on on the weekends at Greene St Friends these days
Lizbot (host) 7:41:52 PM
Hi Again, Mark!
Christine ✔Broodin' Gen X 7:42:02 PM
@Mark! I envy you. Enjoy the vibes & the scene
Lizbot (host) 7:42:24 PM
@Mark - I'm jealous! Is it packed? I know it sold out, but not everyone could make it to the rescheduled night
Mark 7:43:55 PM
when they play here again it’s must see / gotta log off now :)
Lizbot (host) 7:50:04 PM
haha, oh well! I wanted to talk over most of that Stephan Mathieu track, but alas, mic woes! Had to disconnect and "rediscover" devices
Rob from Maryland & Brood X cicadas 7:50:11 PM
