Has anyone actually seen many cicadas yet?? I went to Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton on Sunday, full expecting to see loads of them, but no dice

Brian can probably tell you that in Upper Bucks Pa. they usually don't arrive until August..

The cicadas are starting to come out, but the main brood is around Princeton.

@Alan - Hmmmm. I remember 17 years ago at the station Brood X buzzing away as I walked to and from the station to my car. It felt like earlier in the season, but it might not have been.

@Dave - I figured Hamilton was close enough to Princeton that there might be a lot there, but I guess it's a little too far. I WANTED to get to Princeton on Sunday too, but I ended up having dinner at Grounds for Sculpture at Rat's Restaurant - FIRST time I've eaten at a restaurant- though outdoor seating - since before the pandemic. That place is pricey but the kid was getting hungry and I didn't want to deal with Princeton parking

Thankfully, since Rat's forgot about us out there for a long time, they comped our apps and our dinner was mostly apps

At my parent's place north of Doylestown they would always come out near the beginning of August, every year...so you have plenty of time....

Cicada distribution in NJ is spotty and very localized. I can hear them here in Plainsboro, but nearby in West Windsor - nothing. Best to go to Princeton.

Hi there, Liz. Yeah... you have to be in the right "town" for that. You need old growth trees and hardly any construction over the years that disturbs them. Princeton fits those conditions.

So if you're going to Princeton, just don't take a motorcycle, getting a 50 mph cicada in the face could be...Annoying!

so, what is/are the call letters of that Asheville station you mentioned. I used to love hearing Greg Lyon on a Friday afternoon on PRB in the early 2000's.

There are some good maps online to show your the 2004 cicada distribution.

Hi Shane! Ah, gotcha. I remember them so distinctly from that summer of 2004, but I didn't go venturing around the towns outside of Princeton in Central Jersey, (just my parents' house in South Jersey when visiting there,) so I assumed they were all over Central Jersey. I'm in Philly, so we don't get many here!

I do want to actually get to Princeton soon! This is the longest I haven't been in Princeton - by far - in 20 years!

I assume some things are opening up. There was a free band performing in Palmer Square on Sunday, but it was right in the middle of our reserved Grounds for Sculpture time

Re: ISS. If you haven't already, check out the ISS YouTube channel. During daylight hours, they have a live feed from the ISS camera. Some nice aerial views. (During night, they show old flyovers.)

@ Dave, Yes, we used it during a pass over the Franklin Institute Observatory, it was just so cool! We had a great crowd!!

@ Rob, Forbidden Planet is worth checking out for the special effects and also story line, considering what they had to work with back then, I've seen it several times...

@Rob - The original Forbidden Planet is great! It has a young Leslie Nielsen, pre-Naked Gun movies. It is from 1956 and the experimental electronic soundtrack by husband and wife duo Bebe and Louis Barron was considered groundbreaking at the time and is still waaaay out there!

(I say the original because I wouldn't be surprised if that movie was remade at some point)

@Alan - I find it so much more inventive and original than other sci-fi/space movies of that era

Maybe during this Ganger track, the camera travels up, up, up into orbit to reveal the only place where humans are safe from the cicadas: the International Space Station 🛰

Used to live near them in Germantown, so would see them play in the park.
