Jon, you have done something wonderful
jetty 8:03:34 PM
i really want to try to rope in a 10,000 homo djs/cicadas pride month reference ala COMING OUT but i'm not able to get it quite right
Mike Lupica (host) 8:04:55 PM
Jetty, you go right on working towards that and feel free to promote a signupgenius link to recruit help from the Wednesday night pitcrew.
Mike Lupica (host) 8:05:09 PM
Also, hi everybody!

Mike Lupica (host) 8:09:58 PM
Was in Princeton yesterday. It is LOUSY with the beasties.
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 8:13:07 PM
Today was the loudest they've been in my neighborhood, and that's saying something
DSM 8:13:09 PM
Thanks for that link Rob, I can now fill the home with the soothing song all year long.
Chris Mohr 8:13:29 PM
DJ Mike, can you please play Lou Reed's Metal Cicada Music?
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 8:13:31 PM
DSM sure thing :-D
Commie Francis 8:14:41 PM
I may not be here for dbeat o'clock
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 8:15:16 PM
There's a song by the band La Luz called "Cicada" which does mention the insects. The video is an homage/whatever to telenovela intros, from what I understand. Official video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVaZuX5FRDA
Mike Lupica (host) 8:17:48 PM
Commie, D-Beat o'clock will probably be sometime in hour two.
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 8:18:42 PM
@DSM I found out about the Scott Smallwood effort from this article https://paw.princeton.edu/article/cicada-reunion that a retired Princeton University employee sent me
DSM 8:23:23 PM
Rob excellent! Look forward to reading that!
Jon Solomon 8:23:33 PM
Oh man, I still need to hear the new Squid in full (sorry, was helping someone set up her new phone in the other room).
Commie Francis 8:24:09 PM
I'm at a drive in movie that starts at 9!
Mike Lupica (host) 8:24:26 PM
The Squid record is pretty great, but I especially like that song. (I often like the slowest song on an album of mostly fast songs, so maybe that's why.)
Mike Lupica (host) 8:24:47 PM
Commie, I shall do my best!
DSM 8:25:09 PM
That Sauveur Mallia track was a tasty treat, will have to find that comp.
Jon Solomon 8:25:10 PM
What movie?!
Commie Francis 8:25:31 PM
Female trouble!
Commie Francis 8:25:53 PM
You don't need to rearrange your whole show for me mike!
pethie-ish 8:26:50 PM
Dang, it’s Billy Squire!
Mike Lupica (host) 8:26:55 PM
DSM, it is well worth it!
Mike Lupica (host) 8:27:10 PM
Pethie, it is ALWAYS Billy Squiertime here!
pethie-ish 8:27:32 PM
I approve!
Mark 8:32:43 PM

Commie Francis 8:33:35 PM
BEST EQUALS SONG
Commie Francis 8:33:52 PM
and let me tell you they had a ton of great songs
Mike Lupica (host) 8:34:37 PM
The video for this song is like the most punk rock thing on the internet.
Commie Francis 8:34:47 PM
Agree
Jon Solomon 8:36:11 PM
I have had a LOT OF COLD BREW and am apparently still coming down from the energy of a very fun radio show but I'd like you all to know that I love you.
Mike Lupica (host) 8:37:29 PM
Jon, misinterpreted, that could be read as you having just had a ton of beer and you are drunk-i-love-you-man-ing us.
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 8:38:03 PM
@Mike, it must be. I can't find it on YouTube
Commie Francis 8:38:58 PM

Jon Solomon 8:39:01 PM

Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 8:41:58 PM
Thanks Commie!! I didn't realize that was the song Mike was referring to, I thought it was the New Bomb Turks song.

Coffee=love
Mike Lupica (host) 8:43:41 PM
Topic: ________ = love. (Fill in the blank.)
Chris Mohr 8:44:01 PM
Cicadas = love = coffee?
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 8:44:06 PM
And it is a great video (the Equals one). I'm watching it with the sound off in another window
Chris Mohr 8:44:46 PM
Are we still a Pit Crew if this is a Lounge now? Just wondering
Commie Francis 8:44:56 PM
This song = love
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 8:44:56 PM
Cicadas > coffee. And cicadas = love
Commie Francis 8:45:07 PM
The Starlite Pit
Mike Lupica (host) 8:45:09 PM
"Lounge crew" has a weirder connotation, I think.
Chris Mohr 8:45:22 PM
Lounge Rats?
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 8:45:26 PM
The Starlite Pit
Mike Lupica (host) 8:45:31 PM
That I could do!
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 8:45:37 PM
Oops, Commie beat me to it
Jon Solomon 8:45:47 PM
"Lounge crew" is a type of very specific GAP sweater cut.
Mike Lupica (host) 8:45:54 PM
Hahaha!
Chris Mohr 8:45:58 PM
Gack
pethie-ish 8:46:29 PM
I heard that cicadas LOVE coffee.
Chris Mohr 8:46:35 PM
Starlite = Love = whatever you call us
Commie Francis 8:46:49 PM
Isn't their life intense enough without caffeine?
Chris Mohr 8:47:25 PM
17 years underground is pretty chill though!
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 8:48:28 PM
Imagine a cicada flying into you after consuming coffee
Jon Solomon 8:48:29 PM
Was that a cover of the theme to The Equalizer?
pethie-ish 8:48:57 PM
@Commie: It calms them down, strangely enough
TYrannousaurus B 8:49:30 PM
Well that was cool
Mark 8:49:42 PM

Bo 8:53:19 PM
@Mike, love this song and Video!
Chris Mohr 8:53:31 PM
How old do cicadas get? Like, how many cycles underground, just 1 or more than 1?
Mike Lupica (host) 8:53:35 PM
Yo Bo and everyone else I've missed saying "yo" to!
Mike Lupica (host) 8:54:25 PM
Yes, this song is totally great. Sleeper MTV hit, but I am a big JF fan anyway.
Commie Francis 8:54:50 PM
This is the song that John fogerty got sued over cause it sounded too much like credence, right?
Commie Francis 8:55:30 PM
And ok i do feel sorry for the moss
pethie-ish 8:56:04 PM
But I agree skunks are adorable and I do not mind their odors.
Kristin Belz 8:56:11 PM

DSM 9:01:15 PM
This may be of interest to some, I think it’s horror fiction? https://m.barnesandnoble.com/w/brood-x-michael-ohillip-cash/1115182890
Commie Francis 9:01:39 PM

Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 9:03:03 PM
DSM it does look horror-ible ;-)
DSM 9:04:03 PM
Ha!
pethie-ish 9:04:32 PM
Commit some crimes, Commie!
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 9:04:43 PM
@Chris Mohr, these periodical cicadas hatched in 2004, lived underground the whole time feeding on tree roots, and have emerged all at once to mate. They will all die within a month. As adults, these cicadas don't feed.
David Shortell 9:06:12 PM
I didn’t know Double Dagger were from Baltimore. I saw them play in New Brunswick with Hunchback a couple of times back in the 2000’s.
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 9:08:33 PM
@Chris Mohr, there are other cicadas that emerge every year, in mid and late summer. They live underground for maybe 4 years, can and do feed on tree twigs above ground. They are nowhere near as many as the periodical cicadas.
Jon Solomon 9:08:33 PM
I would like to have seen Double Dagger. Their records are terrific.

Lame Drivers will be one of those bands with an exhaustive "how did people not appreciate them at the time?" retrospective in 2041.
Mike Lupica (host) 9:15:44 PM
@Jon, totally. Randomly listened to their album this week and forgot how good they are.
Mike Lupica (host) 9:17:36 PM
D-BEAT O'CLOCK WILL HAPPEN THIS HOUR.
Commie Francis 9:19:20 PM
Movie still hasn't started so MAYBE I'll hear it?
David Shortell 9:20:02 PM
Sorry, I think I erred. Nato Coles was actually the frontman for Modern Machines, who I’ve seen back in the 2000’s.
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 9:20:16 PM
What is D-Beat O'clock?
Commie Francis 9:20:29 PM
Discharge time!
Mike Lupica (host) 9:20:36 PM
@Rob, you'll know it when you hear it!
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 9:21:21 PM
@Mike, ok. I suspect it often happens after 10 pm? I usually head off to bed around that time
Commie Francis 9:22:19 PM
Can you hear the sound/of an enormous door/slamming in the depths of hell
Commie Francis 9:22:39 PM

Christine ✔Broodin' Gen X 10:00:03 PM
@Rob, it sounds simultaneously fascinating and horrifying.

PJ HARVEY 💟
Mike Lupica (host) 10:33:06 PM
@Colin, I think the studio version of this song is on Stories From the City, Stories from the Sea, which is like 2000? But agree, this is totally 90s zone in terms of delivery.
Colin McDonnell 10:34:08 PM
just looked it up recorded nov 10 2000
Mike Lupica (host) 10:34:13 PM

Mike Lupica (host) 10:48:22 PM
Believe it or not, the video for this Pieces of a Dream song was critical Video Music Box viewing for me. It's kind of awesome.
Bo 10:49:43 PM
I believe it man, great stuff!
Mike Lupica (host) 10:50:40 PM
@Jimbeaux, you still here? LOVE CRACKLES ARE ON THE GAME GRID.
Christine ✔Broodin' Gen X 10:50:43 PM
@Mike, I never saw the video; I'll have to check it out.
Mike Lupica (host) 10:52:02 PM
@Christine, it's so charmingly lo-budget. I saw it sanwiched inbetween all the early 80s hip-hop that Video Music Box played. Routine after-school altar worshipping for me in the 8Ts.
Mike Lupica (host) 10:52:20 PM
*sandwiched
