This Base-10 system of numbers that the humans on this planet is amusing.... Ya sometimes it's the few years preceding and after the decade change zero year where a certain era takes place.
Brian D 12:12:53 PM
Like late 70s to early 80s has a certain overlap for punk / new wave etc

Vacation is over, DJ Esoterica!
Brian D 12:16:45 PM
Sometimes I place music in a decade but it's a year off . We did an 80s show for School of Rock and a tune from the B52s "comeback " LP was in the set . I always think of that lp as so "90s" but it sneaked in during 1989
Esoterica (host) 12:17:39 PM
unfortunately i had no vacay! mr. m, sad story. i dropped mint tea on my computer! hahahah
Brian D 12:18:04 PM
Love Shack was the tune from that lp. Fun bass & gtr parts to go over.

Brian D 12:40:16 PM

Esoterica (host) 12:41:04 PM

Esoterica (host) 12:52:41 PM
awesome to be back!
David Shortell 12:52:45 PM
It’s not surprising that a Boston band like the Real Kids covered that song. Around the time that show was recorded, a “Cheers” episode displayed the graffito “God Save the Kinks” on the men’s room wall.
Esoterica (host) 12:53:10 PM
whoa, interesting tidbit, david! welcome, btw

David Shortell 1:02:03 PM
I recently read “Velvet Underground and Nico”, written by Joe Harvard for the 33⅓ book series about classic record albums. There’s a funny bit about the song “Venus in Furs”, named after Leopold von Sacher-Masoch’s 1870 novel inspired by his own kinky private life (and adapted into film by Joel Schlemowitz).
David Shortell 1:02:07 PM
Joe wrote: ‘[It] is thus a song composed by a writer who bases most of his work on his life, based on a book that is based on its own writer’s life. In other words, “Venus in Furs” is art mimicking art mimicking life (or life mimicking art mimicking life, depending on whether you consider songwriting to be “life” or “art”). Just be thankful that Reed didn’t see Schlemowitz’s film and base the song on that, in which case it would have been—well, you get the picture.’
-ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ-💀 1:02:17 PM
Well I’m still a fool in June!
Esoterica (host) 1:02:51 PM
interesting, david!
Brian D 1:03:10 PM
Yeah that was a pretty good 33 1/3. Love those books. Most of them.
David Shortell 1:03:13 PM
Joe pointed out that the song omits the novel’s character Alexis Popadopolis: ‘Perhaps it was too hard to rhyme much with Popadoplis besides Metropolis. Dangerous territory, even for an English major with a rhyming dictionary who takes so much speed he only needs to sleep every third day’.
Mark 1:03:26 PM
mrm when does ur highly anticipated show begin ?!
Esoterica (host) 1:03:52 PM
i want to get those 33 1/3 books:)

Guelo 1:08:06 PM
A very nice track, this.
David Shortell 1:08:52 PM
Joe Harvard succumbed to cancer 2 years ago. His “garden of junk” that he maintained in a Cookman Avenue alley has since been removed.

David Shortell 1:43:26 PM
Wow, it’s been 22 years since I saw “Boys Don’t Cry” in a theatre. The documentary “The Brandon Teena Story” came out just a year before. I’m not completely sure which I saw first.
Brian D 1:43:52 PM
Yes the single came out the year before. June 79 . Common practice. Single first, LP after
David Shortell 1:46:45 PM
I saw 999 play the Village Underground in 2003. Their bassist punted my backpack across the stage like it was a soccer ball.
David Shortell 1:48:06 PM
Long ago, I saw a movie version of "Steppenwolf".
Esoterica (host) 1:50:42 PM

Brian D 1:54:24 PM
This song's lyrics/ names appeared in a funny Winnie the Pooh meme i saw.
Esoterica (host) 1:54:40 PM
lol
Brian D 1:56:31 PM
Space Cowboy (regular Winnie) , Gangster of Love (Winnie in tuxedo), Maurice (Winnie in tux w / monocle). It's the little things...
David Shortell 1:57:15 PM
Brian D, I will assume that the Pooh meme regrettably used Disney cartoon stills instead of Ernest Shepard illustrations from the Milne books.
Brian D 1:58:12 PM
Ya.. My meme love does not go to film school. That would not be much fun.
Brian D 1:58:28 PM
To all things their place...
Brian D 1:59:50 PM
But yeah i grew up with both Shepard and the Walt co versions of Winnie . All good
Brian D 2:00:41 PM
Fave Funkadelic track here... such a groove
Esoterica (host) 2:01:25 PM

I bought that Minutemen double LP when it came out. I remember each of the four sides ended with automobile sounds, which alerted me to flip the record over. I wonder if those sounds were included in the cassette and CD formats.
Brian D 2:26:25 PM
Hank Marvin gtr tone wow
Esoterica (host) 2:26:44 PM

Brian D 2:30:32 PM
But not as cool as the James Brown dancing figure
David Shortell 2:30:57 PM
I haven’t thoroughly watched Sir Cliff Richard’s old movies (“The Young Ones”, etc) but I believe his band, The Shadows, act in them as well.
Brian D 2:32:10 PM
Not as annoying as those "auto play" Halloween decorations that go by motion sensor
Esoterica (host) 2:32:20 PM
oh i should check those out, david
Stevie P 2:32:55 PM
my son says two of his roomates recently got in a beef with one another about overplaying the Billy Bass one of the roomates got at a thrift shop

Other Alan Moore ST stories took their titles from songs like Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring”, Billie Holiday’s “Strange Fruit", Alice Cooper’s "Halo of Flies", PiL’s “Flowers of Romance”, Gene Austin’s “My Blue Heaven” and David Bowie’s “"Loving the Alien".
Stevie P 2:55:14 PM

“Goin' Back” was the one Byrds song recorded when Gene Clark briefly rejoined the group (after Crosby got the boot). Gene appeared with the rest of the group to mime the song on “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour”!
