Well you've definitely won me over with any song named The Great God Pan. If you've never read that story or any others by Arthur machen, you need to if you are into Gothic horror and weird tales

HP Lovecraft made a list of The 10 greatest weird tales ever and Arthur machen had like three on the list

These guys and other bands definitely reference some very old obscure material, and if you're not familiar with it it's easy to miss it.

The whole Gothic image of the great God pan is different from the benevolent earth creature we think of today in pagan terms or otherwise

Yeah this genre is all about the occult

Oh is it more towards the "one look and he causes insanity" thing

Pan is now a day seen as a protector of the forest, a personification of the woodlands in nature in general in a user-friendly way.

100 and 200 years ago, when woods covered most of the world and they were full of wolves and danger, a nature God like pan could be a malevolent character

I've always wanted to take the time and read more about that stuff

Haven't had the time to/have been distracted by my long backlog of books

The Golden Bough from 1890 or so is a comparative study of different old religions, a lot of the neopagan finmish death metal etc other bands refer to a lot of the old stuff. It's good to get the history behind the story or song

Yeah I know a lot of the stuff I play is also Lovecraftian

Electric Wizard especially loves their Lovecraft

If you read the golden bough it will change your world view. You see all the related myths tales and obsessions of the different religions humans have established to try to explain their existence

Lovecraft isn't cool to like anymore because he was such a racist. Kind of a pitiable figure... A life lived in writing although he did get out and about now and then, trying to live up to unreachable standards he set for himself and the world, living and dying in poverty for the most part

Yeah I was really disappointed to learn that a while back

I don't disown him because he was a racist. Unfortunately I have many friends and acquaintances that are racist that will never contribute as much as he did

He may be a totally despicable character on the personal level, but that doesn't mean his stories cannot be appreciated or not as you choose

Have you heard of Lovecraft Country? I think they made a show of it recently

When I was younger and into serious science fiction etc I hated Lovecraft, I thought his stories were just so laughably with Shay ridden and overblown

I was a fan of the book though and that takes a look at racist Lovecraftian occultism

But if you look at him in a kind of ironic way or actually just don't look at him in any way at all and read his stories they are pretty mesmerizing in his literacy as strange as it is

Yes s t or t s or whatever his initials are Joshi did the Lovecraft country book, He's a great Lovecraft scholar and not blind to lovecraft's failures or sins

I don't watch much TV I did see one episode of that show it was very good. I just worry that a show like that is mostly seen by people that will concur with the anti-racist take of it and probably won't be seen by people that it might change their mind

It's definitely directed toward an audience that probably already agree with it

Lovecraft is such a totemic character. This misfit that could never interact in a normal social situation, supported for most of his life by money from his wealthy father who died insane from syphilis, raised in increasingly poor conditions by his aunt,

Spending all this time writing letters to friends and submitting stories to amateur publications while his money situation got worse and worse... Such a sad character

Looking forward, I wonder how many metal bands will take to Stephen King's stuff like how they did to Lovecraft

Though his stuff doesn't have the same intense aura of mystery and doom as Lovecraft did

but I wonder if he's the closest thing at the moment

Interesting point... I think a lot of the appeal of what they do use as source material is the fact that it's 100 and 200 years old, archaic knowledge, Long established prototypes or whatever

Most of these bands look for a historic or prehistoric or timeless type of placement for their music. It seems to me. Most Stephen King stuff is rooted in the present day

You can make a few references to Cthulhu rising from the depts or nyarlthotep and people will know you mean lovecraft or deep hidden horrors from the other side of the universe

Of course Stephen King acknowledges Lovecraft has a big influence, but I don't see a lot of it in his work. Stephen King is a guy in the factory telling you about the skid marks and his underwear while something horrible is happening

Lovecraft is defining in very archaic terms a horror that is galaxy's deeper than most of what Stephen King's characters go through. A personal terror like cujo where that crazy woman Kathy Bates etc, personal level horror as opposed to cosmic

That's fair that Stephen King is more centralized on a specific person or thing rather than the cosmic horrors that metal love to doomgaze at, but I do think that eventually he'll probably reach a similar status thematically

Well there is no doubt that he is the biggest horror and weird story writer of the later 20th century at least from 1980 on

There are some writers that are writing weird fiction that eclipse Stephen King, and I love my Salem's lot and the stand and The shining

I just had a funny vision of these guys that are playing now jamming in their basement, with their mom upstairs played by Divine from the John Waters movies, holding her ears and wagging her head and saying oh I can't take this crazy music

I feel like most of the haha off like that

Well almost every band started off like that, even my monkees cover band in 1967 and we tried to sing nicely

We couldn't sing, and we couldn't play, and the drummer couldn't drum, but my mother wouldn't have cared even if we sang like Angel she still would have yelled stop making that noise

I always wonder how seriously these bands take their image sound etc. Do they look at it ironically sometimes, with a zappa-like eye on the ludicrous genre they're trying to attract listeners in?

I mean when I look at motley Crue I just think of totally unselfaware dicks that have fallen for that whole leather music culture blah blah blah thing

I think it's a mix of both

I know some of these bands are serious, I think a couple guys from some Norwegian band got indicted for murder in some gruesome story

But I would feel a lot better if I knew these guys were winking at me while they're playing this stuff, kind of like spinal tap

I don't really want to think that they're waiting for some 14-year-old girls to come meet them in the forest so they can sacrifice them

I guess there's always nuts around I'm a Beach boys fan and we had Charlie Manson Jesus Christ

A majority of modern metal realizes it's goofy and that it can get ridiculous but lean into it

because it's fun

I'm sure a lot of them probably most of them do realize it's almost like spinal tap doing a parody. You have a genre, your themes are preset, you have ideas of the music templates...

Yeah I'm not really into all the definitions, because I spend many genres and I've always found that words are very limiting as far as defining feelings and emotions

Yeah I mean I wouldn't say it's a parody

but they are definitely self-aware

And I know there are DJs especially on PRB that love to make 8,000 categories for the different types of bands... Indie emo adult psy ch etc

yeah that's why I say I play all things metal, fuzzy, and sludgey

There is a definite line between being self aware and self-preening, I think motley Crue probably personifies that. Mick Mars was like 40 or 50 years when he was playing the 28-year-old with mötley crüe died here in the wall

yeah I mean there are clowns everywhere you go

it's still fun though!

Yes and thankfully this genre doesn't have as many obvious clowns

egotism and all that run rampant everywhere I'm sure but positive metal culture really is about having an outlet and having fun

ok Flex I had an idea for a Lost in Time & Sludge mascot

So I'm curious, would you say this is the music that you would really choose to define you, or is this just kind of some ironic and sometimes fun stuff you play on a show? Like do you listen to lots of other kinds of music seriously

Tom Carvel made all his commercials in house. Usually one take, just a mic recording him saying we make fresh ice cream we have new ice cream everyday whatever

haha yeah it isn't but Deafheaven is such a prominent metal band atm

Sounds like Morrissey the guy that doesn't mind people s******* all over him

they just announced a new album last night with this as the lead single

it's a huge departure from their sound so it's pretty noteworthy for metal people to know about it

well not a huge departure I guess

This is an excellent song

they have always loved beautiful melodic instrumentals but the exclusively clean vocals is definitely different and they're leaning more into their indie side

the post-metal isn't as present

Wow very good song I predict number one on WABC wait a minute WABC doesn't exist anymore

the album art for these bands is outstanding

Always amazed how you guys find the greatest bestest new songs and old songs for us. That wasn't sludges I would see it but it was great

That was a great story. I was laughing hardcore. Always listening

Hope it's not my soul ripped from my body, and maybe just something like a drug addiction or a weird obsession

I think he realized he was going to retire soon and just wanted to coast until then

I do wonder how many of these bands know how to properly do it and how to protect their vocal cords
