welcome to lost in time and sludge!
jimbeaux 11:03:10 PM
What is Lost is found and what is Sludged shall never be unsludged.
Flex Luthor (host) 11:03:43 PM
forever stained by sludge
Mike Lupica 11:03:50 PM
MOAR MELVINS.
Flex Luthor (host) 11:04:01 PM
I had to do it to em
Mike Lupica 11:06:48 PM
I sometimes worry that the Melvins are the greatest band ever and that I will die not having promoted this belief with enough fervor to earn a hallpass into heaven.
jimbeaux 11:09:19 PM
Russian dash cams...mortality lessons.
Flex Luthor (host) 11:09:27 PM
it was wild
Flex Luthor (host) 11:09:56 PM
I'm sure King Buzzo will reward you in the afterlife
Flex Luthor (host) 11:10:40 PM
Maybe in another life you would have been a religion teacher who started classes off with Hooch
Flex Luthor (host) 11:16:59 PM
I think Green Lung has become my new favorite band to sprinkle in
sean burns 11:19:39 PM
Off and I would guess Ozzy is a progenitor for the vocal stylings of green lung (Great name).
Flex Luthor (host) 11:21:04 PM
for sure
sean burns 11:21:47 PM
If this album had appeared in 1969 my 15-year-old self would have worn it out
Flex Luthor (host) 11:22:33 PM
he just needs decades of drug use to get his voice fully there
sean burns 11:26:19 PM
Yes he does have that aspirational effect to his voice. Good for him
sean burns 11:28:30 PM
Well you've definitely won me over with any song named The Great God Pan. If you've never read that story or any others by Arthur machen, you need to if you are into Gothic horror and weird tales
sean burns 11:29:09 PM
HP Lovecraft made a list of The 10 greatest weird tales ever and Arthur machen had like three on the list
Flex Luthor (host) 11:29:24 PM
I haven't but am into gothic horror so I definitely will
Flex Luthor (host) 11:29:54 PM
oh whoa I will for sure then
sean burns 11:29:57 PM
These guys and other bands definitely reference some very old obscure material, and if you're not familiar with it it's easy to miss it.
sean burns 11:30:21 PM
The whole Gothic image of the great God pan is different from the benevolent earth creature we think of today in pagan terms or otherwise
Flex Luthor (host) 11:30:22 PM
Yeah this genre is all about the occult
Flex Luthor (host) 11:31:06 PM
Oh is it more towards the "one look and he causes insanity" thing
sean burns 11:31:16 PM
Pan is now a day seen as a protector of the forest, a personification of the woodlands in nature in general in a user-friendly way.
sean burns 11:31:42 PM
100 and 200 years ago, when woods covered most of the world and they were full of wolves and danger, a nature God like pan could be a malevolent character
Flex Luthor (host) 11:33:14 PM
I've always wanted to take the time and read more about that stuff
Flex Luthor (host) 11:33:36 PM
Haven't had the time to/have been distracted by my long backlog of books
sean burns 11:37:00 PM
The Golden Bough from 1890 or so is a comparative study of different old religions, a lot of the neopagan finmish death metal etc other bands refer to a lot of the old stuff. It's good to get the history behind the story or song
Flex Luthor (host) 11:39:03 PM
whoa yeah this looks so cool
sean burns 11:39:26 PM
For some reason I'm hearing Jimi Hendrix sings Stone Free over this riff
Flex Luthor (host) 11:40:06 PM
that makes sense Boris (esp during this era and earlier) super into frantic psychedelic stuff
Flex Luthor (host) 11:40:26 PM
Yeah I know a lot of the stuff I play is also Lovecraftian
Flex Luthor (host) 11:40:38 PM
Electric Wizard especially loves their Lovecraft
sean burns 11:42:52 PM
If you read the golden bough it will change your world view. You see all the related myths tales and obsessions of the different religions humans have established to try to explain their existence
sean burns 11:44:57 PM
Lovecraft isn't cool to like anymore because he was such a racist. Kind of a pitiable figure... A life lived in writing although he did get out and about now and then, trying to live up to unreachable standards he set for himself and the world, living and dying in poverty for the most part
Flex Luthor (host) 11:45:42 PM
Yeah I was really disappointed to learn that a while back
sean burns 11:45:44 PM
I don't disown him because he was a racist. Unfortunately I have many friends and acquaintances that are racist that will never contribute as much as he did
sean burns 11:46:17 PM
He may be a totally despicable character on the personal level, but that doesn't mean his stories cannot be appreciated or not as you choose
Flex Luthor (host) 11:47:00 PM
True it's just a true shame though
Flex Luthor (host) 11:47:11 PM
Have you heard of Lovecraft Country? I think they made a show of it recently
sean burns 11:47:52 PM
When I was younger and into serious science fiction etc I hated Lovecraft, I thought his stories were just so laughably with Shay ridden and overblown
Flex Luthor (host) 11:48:07 PM
I was a fan of the book though and that takes a look at racist Lovecraftian occultism
sean burns 11:48:17 PM
But if you look at him in a kind of ironic way or actually just don't look at him in any way at all and read his stories they are pretty mesmerizing in his literacy as strange as it is
sean burns 11:49:08 PM
Yes s t or t s or whatever his initials are Joshi did the Lovecraft country book, He's a great Lovecraft scholar and not blind to lovecraft's failures or sins
sean burns 11:50:23 PM
I don't watch much TV I did see one episode of that show it was very good. I just worry that a show like that is mostly seen by people that will concur with the anti-racist take of it and probably won't be seen by people that it might change their mind
Flex Luthor (host) 11:51:10 PM
Yeah that's definitely true
Flex Luthor (host) 11:51:37 PM
It's definitely directed toward an audience that probably already agree with it
sean burns 11:53:03 PM
Lovecraft is such a totemic character. This misfit that could never interact in a normal social situation, supported for most of his life by money from his wealthy father who died insane from syphilis, raised in increasingly poor conditions by his aunt,
sean burns 11:53:46 PM
Spending all this time writing letters to friends and submitting stories to amateur publications while his money situation got worse and worse... Such a sad character
sean burns 11:54:42 PM
Ah, we love our nuts we're brave enough to live crazy lives that we might wish we could but really don't want to
Flex Luthor (host) 11:55:39 PM
Looking forward, I wonder how many metal bands will take to Stephen King's stuff like how they did to Lovecraft
Flex Luthor (host) 11:56:43 PM
Though his stuff doesn't have the same intense aura of mystery and doom as Lovecraft did
Flex Luthor (host) 11:57:21 PM
but I wonder if he's the closest thing at the moment
sean burns 12:00:49 AM
Interesting point... I think a lot of the appeal of what they do use as source material is the fact that it's 100 and 200 years old, archaic knowledge, Long established prototypes or whatever
sean burns 12:01:25 AM
Most of these bands look for a historic or prehistoric or timeless type of placement for their music. It seems to me. Most Stephen King stuff is rooted in the present day
sean burns 12:03:25 AM
You can make a few references to Cthulhu rising from the depts or nyarlthotep and people will know you mean lovecraft or deep hidden horrors from the other side of the universe
sean burns 12:06:54 AM
Of course Stephen King acknowledges Lovecraft has a big influence, but I don't see a lot of it in his work. Stephen King is a guy in the factory telling you about the skid marks and his underwear while something horrible is happening
Tomi 12:07:02 AM
THAT TRANSITION
Flex Luthor (host) 12:07:38 AM
PARALLAX COMING IN HARD
sean burns 12:08:00 AM
Lovecraft is defining in very archaic terms a horror that is galaxy's deeper than most of what Stephen King's characters go through. A personal terror like cujo where that crazy woman Kathy Bates etc, personal level horror as opposed to cosmic
sean burns 12:08:40 AM
Gee this gent better take care of his vocal cords or he's not going to be able to talk by the time he's 34!
Flex Luthor (host) 12:09:16 AM
That's fair that Stephen King is more centralized on a specific person or thing rather than the cosmic horrors that metal love to doomgaze at, but I do think that eventually he'll probably reach a similar status thematically
sean burns 12:09:49 AM
Well there is no doubt that he is the biggest horror and weird story writer of the later 20th century at least from 1980 on
sean burns 12:10:13 AM
There are some writers that are writing weird fiction that eclipse Stephen King, and I love my Salem's lot and the stand and The shining
sean burns 12:11:16 AM
I just had a funny vision of these guys that are playing now jamming in their basement, with their mom upstairs played by Divine from the John Waters movies, holding her ears and wagging her head and saying oh I can't take this crazy music
Flex Luthor (host) 12:11:50 AM
I feel like most of the haha off like that
Flex Luthor (host) 12:12:04 AM
most of these bands started off like that*
Flex Luthor (host) 12:12:27 AM
that's metal
sean burns 12:12:48 AM
Well almost every band started off like that, even my monkees cover band in 1967 and we tried to sing nicely
sean burns 12:13:26 AM
We couldn't sing, and we couldn't play, and the drummer couldn't drum, but my mother wouldn't have cared even if we sang like Angel she still would have yelled stop making that noise
sean burns 12:14:17 AM
This is the one important message every generation passes on to The next generation... Turn it down
Flex Luthor (host) 12:14:46 AM
ah but here on lost in time and sludge
Flex Luthor (host) 12:14:49 AM
turn it UP
sean burns 12:15:31 AM
Well of course that is what every kid ever did and we never learned our lesson
sean burns 12:17:11 AM
I always wonder how seriously these bands take their image sound etc. Do they look at it ironically sometimes, with a zappa-like eye on the ludicrous genre they're trying to attract listeners in?
sean burns 12:17:38 AM
I mean when I look at motley Crue I just think of totally unselfaware dicks that have fallen for that whole leather music culture blah blah blah thing
Flex Luthor (host) 12:18:09 AM
I think it's a mix of both
sean burns 12:18:11 AM
I know some of these bands are serious, I think a couple guys from some Norwegian band got indicted for murder in some gruesome story
sean burns 12:18:30 AM
But I would feel a lot better if I knew these guys were winking at me while they're playing this stuff, kind of like spinal tap
sean burns 12:18:43 AM
I don't really want to think that they're waiting for some 14-year-old girls to come meet them in the forest so they can sacrifice them
Flex Luthor (host) 12:19:20 AM
Yeah you're thinking of Mayhem with Varg Vikernes and Euronymous
kentman 12:19:37 AM
dl flex, i always meant to ask if Wo Fat is considered sludge
sean burns 12:19:44 AM
I guess there's always nuts around I'm a Beach boys fan and we had Charlie Manson Jesus Christ
Flex Luthor (host) 12:19:56 AM
A majority of modern metal realizes it's goofy and that it can get ridiculous but lean into it
Flex Luthor (host) 12:20:00 AM
because it's fun
sean burns 12:20:12 AM
What a crazy dichotomy! The Beach boys, the epitome of an American band, with Charlie Manson, the epitome of an American man
Flex Luthor (host) 12:20:26 AM
wo fat is def sludge adjacent
Flex Luthor (host) 12:20:29 AM
like not quite
Flex Luthor (host) 12:20:33 AM
but they can hang
Flex Luthor (host) 12:20:40 AM
they're on the same level as fu manchu
Flex Luthor (host) 12:20:58 AM
def more towards stoner rock but they can have their moments for sure
sean burns 12:21:22 AM
I'm sure a lot of them probably most of them do realize it's almost like spinal tap doing a parody. You have a genre, your themes are preset, you have ideas of the music templates...
sean burns 12:21:45 AM
Yeah I'm not really into all the definitions, because I spend many genres and I've always found that words are very limiting as far as defining feelings and emotions
Flex Luthor (host) 12:22:10 AM
Yeah I mean I wouldn't say it's a parody
Flex Luthor (host) 12:22:19 AM
but they are definitely self-aware
sean burns 12:22:32 AM
And I know there are DJs especially on PRB that love to make 8,000 categories for the different types of bands... Indie emo adult psy ch etc
Flex Luthor (host) 12:23:10 AM
yeah that's why I say I play all things metal, fuzzy, and sludgey
Flex Luthor (host) 12:23:14 AM
there's a wide array
sean burns 12:23:58 AM
There is a definite line between being self aware and self-preening, I think motley Crue probably personifies that. Mick Mars was like 40 or 50 years when he was playing the 28-year-old with mötley crüe died here in the wall
Flex Luthor (host) 12:24:53 AM
yeah I mean there are clowns everywhere you go
Flex Luthor (host) 12:25:18 AM
it's still fun though!
sean burns 12:25:24 AM
Yes and thankfully this genre doesn't have as many obvious clowns
Flex Luthor (host) 12:26:35 AM
egotism and all that run rampant everywhere I'm sure but positive metal culture really is about having an outlet and having fun
Tomi 12:28:19 AM
ok Flex I had an idea for a Lost in Time & Sludge mascot
sean burns 12:28:37 AM
So I'm curious, would you say this is the music that you would really choose to define you, or is this just kind of some ironic and sometimes fun stuff you play on a show? Like do you listen to lots of other kinds of music seriously
Flex Luthor (host) 12:29:01 AM
ooo what's the idea?
Tomi 12:29:15 AM
"Sludgie the Whale", like if the Carvel cake listened to a lot of Green Leaf
Tomi 12:29:25 AM
*Green Lung
Flex Luthor (host) 12:29:26 AM
I listen to a lot of music seriously as well, but I do legitimately love metal and this stuff
Flex Luthor (host) 12:30:01 AM
I don't know if I could ever choose a music to define me though
Flex Luthor (host) 12:30:07 AM
Sludgie the Whale!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love it!!!
sean burns 12:30:15 AM
Yeah, I listen two lots of music. I'm sorry that was such a stupid question
Flex Luthor (host) 12:30:35 AM
also perfect because (as we've talked about many times on the show) metal loves whales
Flex Luthor (host) 12:30:42 AM
haha nah man you good
sean burns 12:30:52 AM
Oh boy did we love those old Tom Carvel commercials I cried when he died
sean burns 12:31:40 AM
Barely able to understand him.... My name's Tom Carvel buy some ice cream okay thank you
Tomi 12:32:30 AM
Your nautical themed set was the inspiration
Tomi 12:33:11 AM
Captain Ahab played this band today, Helms Alee? It looks like all their albums are nautically themed?
sean burns 12:33:12 AM
Tom Carvel made all his commercials in house. Usually one take, just a mic recording him saying we make fresh ice cream we have new ice cream everyday whatever
sean burns 12:33:51 AM
Hey we're talking about tom carave here
Flex Luthor (host) 12:33:52 AM
Yes! Love Helms Alee! Sleepwalking Sailors is a great album
Tomi 12:34:16 AM
yess the album cover with the angler fish
Flex Luthor (host) 12:34:22 AM
yup that's it
Flex Luthor (host) 12:34:35 AM
I had no idea Tom Carvel did it in his house whoa
sean burns 12:35:12 AM
Not sludge, wrong key!
Flex Luthor (host) 12:35:40 AM
haha yeah it isn't but Deafheaven is such a prominent metal band atm
sean burns 12:35:50 AM
Sounds like Morrissey the guy that doesn't mind people s******* all over him
Flex Luthor (host) 12:35:55 AM
they just announced a new album last night with this as the lead single
Flex Luthor (host) 12:36:36 AM
it's a huge departure from their sound so it's pretty noteworthy for metal people to know about it
Flex Luthor (host) 12:37:10 AM
well not a huge departure I guess
sean burns 12:37:13 AM
This is an excellent song
Flex Luthor (host) 12:37:59 AM
they have always loved beautiful melodic instrumentals but the exclusively clean vocals is definitely different and they're leaning more into their indie side
Flex Luthor (host) 12:38:07 AM
the post-metal isn't as present
sean burns 12:38:07 AM
Wow very good song I predict number one on WABC wait a minute WABC doesn't exist anymore
kentman 12:39:16 AM
the album art for these bands is outstanding
sean burns 12:39:48 AM
Always amazed how you guys find the greatest bestest new songs and old songs for us. That wasn't sludges I would see it but it was great
Phil Newhall 12:44:07 AM
Killer playlist as usual Flex. Enjoyed that last song. Lord Give Me a Sign!!
Flex Luthor (host) 12:44:53 AM
Yes!! So bummed when DMX died but all I could think about was that religion teacher too haha
Flex Luthor (host) 12:45:15 AM
Thanks for listening Phil!
Flex Luthor (host) 12:46:14 AM
Despite what this song suggests
Flex Luthor (host) 12:46:20 AM
LONG LIVE SLUDGIE THE WHALE
sean burns 12:46:38 AM
Last week I was making fun of sludge.... This week I'm listening...
sean burns 12:46:55 AM
What next????
Phil Newhall 12:47:25 AM
That was a great story. I was laughing hardcore. Always listening
sean burns 12:48:12 AM
Hope it's not my soul ripped from my body, and maybe just something like a drug addiction or a weird obsession
Flex Luthor (host) 12:48:29 AM
Only time will tell what the sludge may bring
Tomi 12:48:40 AM
ha thanks for that Flex!
Flex Luthor (host) 12:48:50 AM
I forgot to mention though that he'd have us sing along to the songs
Flex Luthor (host) 12:49:32 AM
so you'd get a class of 14 year old boys singing along to first we take manhattan or lord give me a sign
Flex Luthor (host) 12:49:54 AM
also just to be clear, the teacher was like 65
Flex Luthor (host) 12:50:04 AM
I think he realized he was going to retire soon and just wanted to coast until then
Flex Luthor (host) 12:50:50 AM
He retired a year or two after I graduated
sean burns 12:51:27 AM
Boy the music was good when this song started but I hope this gent doesn't damage his vocal cords!
sean burns 12:51:50 AM
How do these guys do it?
Flex Luthor (host) 12:52:02 AM
I do wonder how many of these bands know how to properly do it and how to protect their vocal cords
sean burns 12:52:15 AM
Wow this is back on a nice track right now
Flex Luthor (host) 12:52:19 AM
people blow out their voice doing a lot less
sean burns 12:53:18 AM
Interesting Spacey effects there not we'd expect
sean burns 12:53:35 AM
7 minutes left you can play war pigs twice
sean burns 12:54:07 AM
As an auld Lang syne to us actual old sludge people
Flex Luthor (host) 12:55:27 AM
haha didn't see the message before I started this
Flex Luthor (host) 12:55:34 AM
but I can promise a war pigs next week
Flex Luthor (host) 12:55:42 AM
right at midnight
sean burns 12:58:33 AM
Take care on your way home.. stay far from the swamp
sean burns 12:59:01 AM
And thanks for 2 hours of fun where I didn't have to look at my phone and try to find something interesting to read about
Flex Luthor (host) 12:59:19 AM
Haha glad you enjoyed it!
Flex Luthor (host) 12:59:28 AM
Thanks everyone for listening! Have a good one!
sean burns 1:00:13 AM
Great last song only marginally sludgy
Phil Newhall 1:00:24 AM
Thanks Flex Luther. What a way to end it
