@ Readie: I saw the Solar Eclipse from north of Doylestown, Pa. It was Absolutely Beautiful!

@alan i tried to view but my sunrise spot was too obstructed - must have been magnificent live !

Oh yeah- the Recitation from Zolar X! Love that one!

@ Mark, sorry to hear, Yeah I didn't see the sun until 6AM DST, it was partial and looked like the Pacman figure facing to the left.

Oh man, Alan- I know I was going to search for the glasses and I failed to do so! I will look online, though of course it isn't the same! I bet it was awesome!

@ Readie: Yes you had to have glasses to see it. But I was om the phone with a friend at th boardwalk at the shore, and she saw it rising like an orange peel over the Atlantic between broken clouds...

@alan wow she may have won the best view of it of all !

I wonder how you could look through the lens without glasses to take pics?

@ Mark, I've been at my parent's place N. of Doylestown for a long time, and we usually don't get any cicadas until late July, never in June

I haven't been to Princeton yet, either. I guess I'm kinda averse to flying bugs...

@ Readie: According to Sky and Telescope a few seconds glance at sunset is ok, as long as the sun isn't too bright, the infrared can harm your retina if too long. My sunrise was way roo bright so I had to use welders glass, down the shore thre was enough ocean haze to look briefly...

Ok, @Alan- you're a wealth of knowledge! I was distracted this week- heavy work schedule...but I should have put it in my calendar....

Hi Readie! I remember when the Darling Buds played this live. I had no idea that they had covered Temptation. EVERYONE in the audience started singing along loudly!! I was almost crying tears of joy

ha ha i also grew up w wkbw as I’ve mentioned b4 to Recherche:)

I listened to WKBW back in the 70s, when Jackson Armstrong ("the all-American freak") was the weeknight dj. The signal came in pretty well near DC.

And he was better than all the DC night-time AM radio djs

sandy beach retired just last year he was a talk show host for last 25 years ( right wing !)

the station actually introduced a lotta music back in the day - it was a 50k watt blowtorch as they say

Mark, it was. I lived for it and when my family (and I) moved to Europe for two years I was sad to leave WKBW behind

crazy thing rob there were stories of Europeans picking up the signal under right conditions!

Yeah, you guys, @Mark & Rob- I know we've talked about KB before- but never would I think I'd ever meet other folks into KB- it was so powerful!!! I can't believe it reached to DC!!!

And Europe? Wow!

haha i remember meting people from the dc area & when i said i was from the buffalo area they’d mention listening to KB :)

Mark, believe me, I tried to pick up WKBW in Europe. But Radio Luxembourg after dark in 1974 was even better!

Re: Radio signals: I have a ham radio license and can tell you that Low Band AM signals can easily reflect off the ionosphere, and easily refract off the surface of the earth... we used to call them "radio waves with legs"

Ian gillen has been inducted into my HOF of singers! & deep purple has real bangers - clamor club pat played a great 20 minuter this year :)

Mark, RL introduced me to the top 10/top 30 British stuff of the day. Bowie, Roxy/Ferry, Sweet, Suzi Quatro, Status Quo, and many more. It changed my musical taste substantially and permanently.

@alan : do you ever listen for the short wave numbers stations /there’s a great npr feature on them

Alls I had was a small square Sony AM/FM transistor radio with a long antenna. When we moved back to DC I tried tried tried to pick up Radio Luxembourg but alas I couldn't. But I could listen to WKBW again

@Mark it was!! I attended an American Dep. of Defense high school (my dad was in the military) and I was the only person there that I knew of who liked or cared about Radio Luxembourg and all those British bands

@Mark Not sure I know what you mean by "short wave numbers" are you referring to call signs (K and W for USA, G for the UK Etc...)

And I bought albums, either at the base PX, or from an Italian (or French) record store, and the British boarding school son of my dad's colleague bought me a fair amount too (I paid him!)

no there’s shortwave frequencies that intermittently broadcast pretty spooky sequences of numbers / dates back to the Cold War & spies - there’s a great npr feature that can b found on YouTube

Yeah, I listened to KB on a little transistor too...love the sound...retro for sure.

I still have all the records (including the British K-Tel albums) from that time. I should hook up my turntable again because there are still some tracks that aren't on YouTube

I wish I had that transistor still. I must have ditched it during one of my moves in my 20s or 30s

wow!! I used to have a great album collection but lost or got disbursed after many many moves :(

@ Mark, Oh That!! (numbers) Yeah, that goes with the "Woodpecker" sound which was later declasified as "over-the horizon" radar

@rob they actually still sell i keep one around for power outage type situations

@Mark & Rob- yeah we have a huge box set of sw numbers and I play them sometimes with soundscapes and soundscapes...the box set is called the Conet Project

Fortunately I didn't move a whole lot, and the moves were all local so I kept all my records
