Happy Pride-day, and welcome to the weekend! We will ease in to things with new music from Monocot!
Mark 5:06:43 PM
i know one of these days I’m gonna hear ogden nut unexpectedly somewhere else & immediately think it’s friday 5pm :)
Alan Pasnyk 5:07:13 PM
Hi Readie!!! Hope you had a good week. Mine was very interesting...
Readie Righteous (host) 5:07:48 PM
Ah, @Mark, that's funny- it's a weekend-starting anthem!
Readie Righteous (host) 5:08:08 PM
Hey @Alan- Do TELL!
Mark 5:08:52 PM
that’s a great station id that precedes it too ! tho i do miss the old one in the strange voice/ language :)
Alan Pasnyk 5:09:45 PM
@ Readie: I saw the Solar Eclipse from north of Doylestown, Pa. It was Absolutely Beautiful!
Mark 5:11:02 PM
@alan i tried to view but my sunrise spot was too obstructed - must have been magnificent live !
Readie Righteous (host) 5:12:41 PM
Oh yeah- the Recitation from Zolar X! Love that one!
Alan Pasnyk 5:13:22 PM
@ Mark, sorry to hear, Yeah I didn't see the sun until 6AM DST, it was partial and looked like the Pacman figure facing to the left.
Readie Righteous (host) 5:13:52 PM
Oh man, Alan- I know I was going to search for the glasses and I failed to do so! I will look online, though of course it isn't the same! I bet it was awesome!
Alan Pasnyk 5:15:49 PM
@ Readie: Yes you had to have glasses to see it. But I was om the phone with a friend at th boardwalk at the shore, and she saw it rising like an orange peel over the Atlantic between broken clouds...
Mark 5:17:13 PM
@alan wow she may have won the best view of it of all !
Readie Righteous (host) 5:17:44 PM
Oh boy, @Alan- that sounds great- the beach would be fantastic!
Alan Pasnyk 5:19:05 PM
She took some fantastically great photos...
Mark 5:19:29 PM
@alan are u near cicada territory? i know there’s been mention of them in n bucks county
Readie Righteous (host) 5:19:50 PM
I wonder how you could look through the lens without glasses to take pics?
Alan Pasnyk 5:22:14 PM
@ Mark, I've been at my parent's place N. of Doylestown for a long time, and we usually don't get any cicadas until late July, never in June
Mark 5:24:03 PM
thanks i know I’ve gotta to princeton which looks like their epicenter around here
Readie Righteous (host) 5:25:24 PM
I haven't been to Princeton yet, either. I guess I'm kinda averse to flying bugs...
Alan Pasnyk 5:25:40 PM
@ Readie: According to Sky and Telescope a few seconds glance at sunset is ok, as long as the sun isn't too bright, the infrared can harm your retina if too long. My sunrise was way roo bright so I had to use welders glass, down the shore thre was enough ocean haze to look briefly...
Readie Righteous (host) 5:27:39 PM
Ok, @Alan- you're a wealth of knowledge! I was distracted this week- heavy work schedule...but I should have put it in my calendar....
Alan Pasnyk 5:28:35 PM
@ Readie: Hey I remember you playng this track (Kinda kinky) a long time ago... I had to wait for you to announce the name
Mark 5:29:54 PM
readie: did u see sisters w transistors w the group of PRB dj’s that watched together?
Readie Righteous (host) 5:30:09 PM
Your memory is incredible! @alan!
Readie Righteous (host) 5:31:01 PM
@Mark- no I didn't ! Guess I missed the memo! lol
Readie Righteous (host) 5:32:59 PM
What's the intel on that @Mark?
Mark 5:33:09 PM
haha i know lizbot & Dana k did as they’ve mentioned it before & lizbot did 2 great theme shows off it / it was supposed to b shown outside tonite but got canceled
Readie Righteous (host) 5:34:31 PM
Yeah, I have been lax in my tuning in this week- my bad...
Mark 5:38:27 PM
haha us prb “addicts” r tuned in 24/7 ! :)
Readie Righteous (host) 5:40:51 PM
I know- I am proud of all you folks who are avid listeners! You rule!
Readie Righteous (host) 5:41:50 PM
I tune in a lot and don't do the chat sometimes...
Alan Pasnyk 5:43:26 PM
@ Readie: Lizbot said she may be tuning in by FM on her way to shore...
Readie Righteous (host) 5:45:25 PM
Cool! I hope the weather clears up for them! @alan
Mark 5:46:05 PM
yeah i thought about lizbot earlier as she was fretting yesterday about the rain possible on her drive there :(
Readie Righteous (host) 5:58:11 PM
booty shakin' time time time
Alan Pasnyk 6:12:23 PM
That Sly song is what we all need more of as far as "The Message" is concerned...
Readie Righteous (host) 6:13:31 PM
oh yes, @alan...
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 6:27:08 PM
Good evening everyone! I love love love this song
Readie Righteous (host) 6:28:18 PM
Hi Rob!! Great! good to see ya!
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 6:29:47 PM
Hi Readie! I remember when the Darling Buds played this live. I had no idea that they had covered Temptation. EVERYONE in the audience started singing along loudly!! I was almost crying tears of joy
Readie Righteous (host) 6:31:00 PM
Hey Rob! I love those live shows where the collective energy just SWELLS!!
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 6:46:23 PM
WKBW YESSSSSS
Mark 6:47:20 PM
ha ha i also grew up w wkbw as I’ve mentioned b4 to Recherche:)
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 6:49:14 PM
I listened to WKBW back in the 70s, when Jackson Armstrong ("the all-American freak") was the weeknight dj. The signal came in pretty well near DC.
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 6:49:36 PM
And he was better than all the DC night-time AM radio djs
Mark 6:50:14 PM
sandy beach retired just last year he was a talk show host for last 25 years ( right wing !)
Mark 6:51:42 PM
the station actually introduced a lotta music back in the day - it was a 50k watt blowtorch as they say
Mark 6:53:22 PM
haha woulda heard this one on there long time ago !! :)
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 6:53:59 PM
Mark, it was. I lived for it and when my family (and I) moved to Europe for two years I was sad to leave WKBW behind
Mark 6:55:01 PM
crazy thing rob there were stories of Europeans picking up the signal under right conditions!
Readie Righteous (host) 6:55:17 PM
Yeah, you guys, @Mark & Rob- I know we've talked about KB before- but never would I think I'd ever meet other folks into KB- it was so powerful!!! I can't believe it reached to DC!!!
Readie Righteous (host) 6:55:29 PM
And Europe? Wow!
Mark 6:56:59 PM
haha i remember meting people from the dc area & when i said i was from the buffalo area they’d mention listening to KB :)
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 6:58:55 PM
Mark, believe me, I tried to pick up WKBW in Europe. But Radio Luxembourg after dark in 1974 was even better!
Mark 6:59:25 PM
lovin the deep purple can’t get enuf ian gillen:) !
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 7:00:09 PM
Wow, Mark, you're from Buffalo *genuflects* ;-)
Mark 7:00:15 PM
ha i know i woulda been into radio luxembourg 🇱🇺 as a teen !
Readie Righteous (host) 7:00:37 PM
Yeah, Mark! written by Jon Lord- DP one of my all-time fave bands
Mark 7:00:40 PM
hahaha tho haven’t lived there in ages
Alan Pasnyk 7:01:55 PM
Re: Radio signals: I have a ham radio license and can tell you that Low Band AM signals can easily reflect off the ionosphere, and easily refract off the surface of the earth... we used to call them "radio waves with legs"
Mark 7:02:22 PM
Ian gillen has been inducted into my HOF of singers! & deep purple has real bangers - clamor club pat played a great 20 minuter this year :)
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 7:03:23 PM
Mark, RL introduced me to the top 10/top 30 British stuff of the day. Bowie, Roxy/Ferry, Sweet, Suzi Quatro, Status Quo, and many more. It changed my musical taste substantially and permanently.
Mark 7:03:42 PM
@alan : do you ever listen for the short wave numbers stations /there’s a great npr feature on them
Mark 7:04:42 PM
@rob that must have been so fantastic to hear that great music there at that time !
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 7:05:00 PM
Alls I had was a small square Sony AM/FM transistor radio with a long antenna. When we moved back to DC I tried tried tried to pick up Radio Luxembourg but alas I couldn't. But I could listen to WKBW again
Mark 7:05:39 PM
haha u didn’t know enuf to stream it back then :)
Mark 7:06:23 PM
i sometimes listen to prb on a small transistor to go old school :)
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 7:06:51 PM
@Mark it was!! I attended an American Dep. of Defense high school (my dad was in the military) and I was the only person there that I knew of who liked or cared about Radio Luxembourg and all those British bands
Mark 7:07:16 PM
so great !! :))
Alan Pasnyk 7:07:16 PM
@Mark Not sure I know what you mean by "short wave numbers" are you referring to call signs (K and W for USA, G for the UK Etc...)
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 7:08:27 PM
And I bought albums, either at the base PX, or from an Italian (or French) record store, and the British boarding school son of my dad's colleague bought me a fair amount too (I paid him!)
Mark 7:09:03 PM
no there’s shortwave frequencies that intermittently broadcast pretty spooky sequences of numbers / dates back to the Cold War & spies - there’s a great npr feature that can b found on YouTube
Readie Righteous (host) 7:09:11 PM
Yeah, I listened to KB on a little transistor too...love the sound...retro for sure.
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 7:09:36 PM
I still have all the records (including the British K-Tel albums) from that time. I should hook up my turntable again because there are still some tracks that aren't on YouTube
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 7:10:37 PM
I wish I had that transistor still. I must have ditched it during one of my moves in my 20s or 30s
Mark 7:10:42 PM
wow!! I used to have a great album collection but lost or got disbursed after many many moves :(
Alan Pasnyk 7:11:06 PM
@ Mark, Oh That!! (numbers) Yeah, that goes with the "Woodpecker" sound which was later declasified as "over-the horizon" radar
Mark 7:11:37 PM
@rob they actually still sell i keep one around for power outage type situations
Readie Righteous (host) 7:11:40 PM
@Mark & Rob- yeah we have a huge box set of sw numbers and I play them sometimes with soundscapes and soundscapes...the box set is called the Conet Project
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 7:11:44 PM
Fortunately I didn't move a whole lot, and the moves were all local so I kept all my records
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 7:12:05 PM
@Readie, neat!
Readie Righteous (host) 7:12:14 PM
soundscapes and spoken word, that is...haha
Mark 7:12:32 PM
i know readie i loved when u played in the past The mike hunter show opens w some !
Mark 7:14:16 PM
there’s a great numbers sw freq announced out of Taiwan by an overly cheerful woman broadcaster :)
Alan Pasnyk 7:14:29 PM
@Readie, Just curious, we used to listen to Jean Shepherd on WOR NY from N. of Doylestown on AM, Did you ever liisten to his story telling??
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 7:15:25 PM
Here's what my Sony transistor radio looked like https://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/59634-70s-era-sony-transistor-radios (top right, square)
Readie Righteous (host) 7:15:53 PM
Yes Alan, there was a station out of New York that played old shows of Jean Shepherd's- I think it was WBAI FM
Mark 7:16:07 PM
ok time for friday nite dinner / b listening to rr & Recherche TIL 8 / great show as always !
Rob from Maryland & Brood X Cicadaland 7:16:14 PM
