Beautiful...
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:30:20 AM
I think so too!
Richard from Rocky Hill 11:41:39 AM
Hi SBW 3rd! Thanks so much for the wonderful Etta Baker track, reminding us of the many fabulous black women blues & gospel guitar players who have been unjustly overshadowed by their male colleagues. And the track by the woefully under-known and under-celebrated Jo Ann Kelly, not an appropriating copyist but someone who entered fully on the blues path, both musically and emotionally.
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:46:24 AM
Hi Richard! Agreed on both counts :)
Richard from Rocky Hill 11:48:37 AM
And, wow, thanks for the shoutout just now. And for presenting the question & dilemma -- "When does homage become appropriation?" -- so well & rationally. There's no easy answer, but you framed it well. And gave Ms. Kelly the credit she deserved for also sincerely helping out her musical idol Memphis Minnie in Minnie's last years.
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:51:45 AM
By the way I double checked -- it's definitely your book in the window display at Labyrinth!
Brian D 11:58:30 AM
Really good show today SBW3!
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:58:58 AM
Thanks Brian as always!
