Hello everyone!
Mark Reichard 10:42:56 AM
Really? You've been spinning these great blues records for almost 45 minutes and not one lazy motherfucker can be bothered to comment? Well, I love your show, although I'm only a relatively recent listener. And I've only recently discovered Memphis Minnie, even though this records about 100 years old. I'd heard of her, but I hadn't actually HEARD her until a few months ago. Thanks for your great taste in music.
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:43:18 AM
hahaha thanks Mark!
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:44:08 AM
Memphis Minnie is absolutely great!
StitchingPink 10:44:59 AM
good morning! glad to catch your show this morning!
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:46:17 AM
Good morning Stitching Pink!
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:55:47 AM
There's nothing "Little" about these talents. I don't think I'd ever listened enough to Little Willie John. What a impassioned top-quality blues vocalist!
Mark Reichard 10:56:23 AM
Stitching Pink I like your show a lot too, although I know jack shit about knitting. But I like how you combine your passions of knitting and music. Frankly, if I were the programming director and you pitched me a show where you said, "Well, I'm gonna play some music and then I'm gonna teach people how to knit a sweater or something,? I'm not sure I would have given that the green light. But it works!
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:57:13 AM
@Richard: Indeed! Worth listening past "Fever" and some of his hits.
Mark Reichard 10:57:40 AM
Yeah, you're hitting on a lot of my favorites here--Little Willie John, Ruth Brown...it said in the liner notes to the Little Willie John collection I have that James Brown toured with him early in his career and borrowed a lot from him.
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:58:22 AM
Like Mark I can't knit, crochet, or sew. I couldn't make a lanyard to save my life. But I always like hearing about it!
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:58:44 AM
Didn't know about James Brown and Willie John but that makes sense!
StitchingPink 11:00:37 AM
That something happens to me with PSAs!
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:01:04 AM
Glad i'm not alone....
StitchingPink 11:01:19 AM
Hey Mark - thanks for the shout out. WPRB is great about supporting all sorts of interesting shows!
Richard from Rocky Hill 11:03:30 AM
@Mark Reichard -- VERY interesting about James Brown being something of a protege of Little Willie John. Yes, I do believe I can hear the stylistic links.
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:04:37 AM
@Richard -- especially on his Famous Flames recordings
Richard from Rocky Hill 11:06:01 AM
Oh, my! Aretha Franklin also recorded a killer cover of "96 Tears" early on. Very cool that song has a whole life outside garage rock curiosity/anthem.
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:08:52 AM
I'll have to check out Aretha's version!
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:11:31 AM
I love Wynonie Harris but I sometimes fear his lyrics will get me in trouble with the Society for the Supression of Vice. I decided I could get "Lovin' Machine" past the censors safely.
Ookla the Mok 11:16:54 AM
Shredding 👍🔥
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:18:43 AM
:)
Mark Reichard 11:47:10 AM
I honestly think the songs were better when they had to write euphemisms to get around the censors instead of just spewing profanity.
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:47:56 AM
It's shocking how much you can say with the right metaphor
