So is it because they sing in a high register? Or because a good beat makes them even more uncomfortable than other accoutrements of a well-lived life?; 'Never turn your back on mother earth,' they chant or gibber in a style unnatural enough to end your current relationship or kill your cacti, and I must be a natural man after all, because I can't endure the contradiction."

Alan Pasnyk 5:05:07 PM
Hiiiii Lizbot !!!! Glad your trip went well, no auto problems like you were concerned about....
Lizbot (host) 5:05:10 PM
@Brian D - We didn't get back until late last night. I messed up my knee and took Advil Liquigels, which make me a little woozy, so this is I might be a little woozy during this show!
Rob from Maryland 5:05:15 PM
Howdy all
Brian D 5:05:18 PM
We got back on Monday eve. Thurs to Mon. We bookended the trip in Woodstock NY. Great bnb & restaurants
Rob from Maryland 5:05:35 PM
@Lizbot I'm sorry your knee is messed up. Feel better soon!
Lizbot (host) 5:05:35 PM
Hi Alan!
Rob from Maryland 5:05:51 PM
Hi Brian, Alan, Lizbot!
Brian D 5:06:08 PM
Al Stewart is my Great Scot reference
Lizbot (host) 5:06:15 PM
@Alan - No car issues, thankfully! I saw a LOT of blown-out tires bits on the highway. Maybe the extreme heat is causing older tires to expand
Rob from Maryland 5:06:21 PM
Is Al Stewart a great Scot?
Lizbot (host) 5:06:23 PM
Hi Rob!
Brian D 5:06:27 PM
He is a Glaswegian
Rob from Maryland 5:06:47 PM
I didn't know that, Brian
Lizbot (host) 5:07:11 PM
Yes! Ahh. yes, he IS a great Scot! @Brian - When I hear that phrase, I just can't shake Doc from Back to the Future.
Brian D 5:07:34 PM
We swam in the best swimming hole near Warren VT.... WOW!
Lizbot (host) 5:09:03 PM
@Brian D - Nice! We swam in two Vermont lakes this trip - Champlain and Dunmore!
Alan Pasnyk 5:09:23 PM
@ Rob: Did you get a copy of that Sky and Tel Cicada article??
Brian D 5:09:51 PM
O I think Michael Scott from The Office (US). He would say that in his home made lo budget production co. advert on his equally lo budg inspirational work videos
Brian D 5:11:42 PM
We swam in Champlain too! Right near the Switchback Brewery. Good time. I did not take home any of theirs but I really loaded the car up with Zero Gravity and Lawson's cans.... so good....
Rob from Maryland 5:14:43 PM
@Alan, no, I completely forgot about it :-(
Lizbot (host) 5:14:52 PM
@Brian D - We stayed in Colchester by Champlain first, spent a lot of time in Burlington and Shelburne (Shelburne Farms, Shelburne Museum, etc.,) then down to Middlebury, then to Leicester, where my daughter swan with her cousin in Lake Dunmore, then on down to Northampton where I saw PRB listener Teresa in Look Park!
Brian D 5:16:28 PM
New England! I would bet on JoJo Richman, Talking Heads... could make a case for Doug Yule Velvet Underground (I think he's from Boston). The Cars came up there but Ric and Ben are really from Ohio I think. Is Amy Mann also Boston? GG Allin (yeeash)... a NH native?
Lizbot (host) 5:20:52 PM
@Brian D - Well definitely Jojo! I made sure to blast Roadrunner the MOMENT we passed the "Massachusetts Welcomes You" sign...Had it all cued up!
Lizbot (host) 5:21:18 PM
Probably not doing any GG Allin..........
Bud Burroughs 5:22:09 PM
Man, when have I last heard Oxford Collapse?
Lizbot (host) 5:22:20 PM
Hi Bud!
Brian D 5:22:44 PM
Great song here
Lizbot (host) 5:22:48 PM
@Bud - Perhaps when they came to WPRB....14ish years ago?!
Bud Burroughs 5:23:10 PM
Hello!
Brian D 5:23:22 PM
Awoo yoo hoo
Bud Burroughs 5:23:37 PM
I remember listening to that song and loving it, but can't remember the circumstances. Feels like a loooong time ago.
Brian D 5:24:43 PM
A little Moody Bluish on the vocals
Lizbot (host) 5:29:18 PM
I am taking any and all suggestions for songs about Vermont, Massachusetts (particularly Western Mass/The Berkshires,) + NY State (but NOT NYC) around The Catskills, etc. If that's too specific, I am ALSO just gonna throw in songs about roadtripping, hiking, lakes, and mountains, etc.!
Bud Burroughs 5:30:21 PM
In and around the lake, mountains come out of the sky and they stand there... :)
Lizbot (host) 5:30:37 PM
@Bud - Yeah, Oxford Collapse had a good amount of play at WPRB back in the mid-2000s, if you're thinking THAT far back!
Lizbot (host) 5:31:30 PM
@Bud - Ha! We were ROUNDABOUT the mountains, it's true
Bud Burroughs 5:31:34 PM
Yeah, I was listening pretty regularly that far back!

Brian D 5:37:22 PM

Canned Heat "On The Road Again"?
Teresa Peacock 5:39:00 PM
WELCOME HOME, LIZBOT! And Hello everyone! 'Kingdom of Love' has always been my very favorite track from 'Underwater Moonlight' which is as near perfect an album as an album gets, imho. Oh, and now, BUZZCOCKS!!! <>
Lizbot (host) 5:39:39 PM
@Rob - Oh yeah, I will totally entertain the possibility of playing Canned Heat, despite the fact that song was used in every montage ever of hippies flocking to Woodstock! That song
Lizbot (host) 5:39:58 PM
@rob. - (part two) that song's vocals never lose their appeal!
Lizbot (host) 5:40:09 PM
HI Teresa!!
Lizbot (host) 5:40:33 PM
@Teresa - Underwater Moonlight is perfection.
Lizbot (host) 5:41:43 PM
@Teresa - Thanks! Been meaning to tell you it was so good to see you!
Steve Volaric 5:42:21 PM

Lizbot (host) 5:42:41 PM

Teresa Peacock 5:43:01 PM
Perhaps this is the inappropriate forum for it, but I just wanted to say HOW GREAT it was to meet you live and in-person this past Sunday! And your fabulous husband George and daughter Hattie!💖💖💖
Brian D 5:44:49 PM
Cranking out the best!!
Lizbot (host) 5:46:06 PM
@Teresa - So glad we got a chance to meet up with in Western Mass! I love Look Park, thanks for alerting us to it!
Lizbot (host) 5:46:33 PM
@Brian D - Thanks!
Lizbot (host) 5:47:10 PM
@Teresa - And it was great meeting Rob and Max!
Lizbot (host) 5:47:27 PM
@Teresa - and your roll-happy dog!
Alan Pasnyk 5:50:22 PM
@Lizbot: Brian May, built his own guitar, but last time I heard also now doing research on Interstellar Dust, Astrophysicist!
Lizbot (host) 5:52:45 PM
@Alan - Brian May, Renaissance man!
Alan Pasnyk 5:54:57 PM
@ Lizbot: I wish I had his brains as Astrophysicist, and his talent for making music, but at least I can appreciate both!
jimbeaux 5:55:40 PM
This show is hot frickin 🔥🔥🔥
Lizbot (host) 5:56:27 PM
Hi jimbeaux! Thanks!
Rob from Maryland 6:08:59 PM
I remember the original version of Me and My Arrow. #Old
Rob from Maryland 6:09:12 PM
And I'm now listening to PRB
Lizbot (host) 6:09:43 PM
@Rob - I grew up on The Point movie! I like Belew's cover, though it IS a bit TOO close to the original
Rob from Maryland 6:10:42 PM
I don't think I ever saw The Point (or if I did it was once in the 70s). This version is pretty close to the original
Lizbot (host) 6:11:47 PM
@Rob - This Nilsson covers tribute compilation was organized by some coalition against gun violence group. I like that cover, but generally I prefer covers that aren't so close to the originals
Lizbot (host) 6:12:50 PM
@Rob - You should watch it again, it'll probably bring back memories! The backstory of how Nilsson got that movie made is pretty crazy
Rob from Maryland 6:14:11 PM
@Lizbot, I'll try to watch it. I know my wife never saw it because she asked me what the arrow was
Teresa Peacock 6:14:48 PM
Somehow I missed Nilsson's film, although I was 6 in '71 and would have been very receptive! Thank you for providing context though, because I find myself singing 'Me and My Arrow' under my breath whilst driving, taking a walk in our nabe, shopping, etc. and I could never explain what it was from and/or why someone would be singing a bromance song about his relationship with an arrow...
Lizbot (host) 6:15:00 PM
@Rob - Nilsson kept getting his idea for the film rejected, so he befriended the secretary of a big producer, found out he was flying cross-country NYC to LA, (or the reverse,) booked a seat NEXT to that guy, pretended it was a coincidence, and pitched it to him the whole flight! It could've really backfired, but the producer was sold! Then he just hopped a plane straight home again
Rob from Maryland 6:15:00 PM
Some of my favorite covers don't sound a lot like the original (X Helter Skelter, Avengers Paint It Black) but some do (can't think of any rn tho)
Brian D 6:15:23 PM
Hidden Cameras double dose ! Love it!
Rob from Maryland 6:15:40 PM
@Lizbot, that's highly amusing
Lizbot (host) 6:16:35 PM
@Teresa - Glad to provide context! Arrow was the pointy blue dog of the main character boy, Oblio, a round-headed boy rejected by society because he lived in a world of pointy-headed people. His best friend was Arrow
Lizbot (host) 6:17:52 PM
@Brian - I'm in a Hidden Cameras kinda mood! Never too many Hidden Cameras!
Rob from Maryland 6:19:10 PM
@Lizbot, there's a commenter on the In Lieu Of Fun live webcast whose screen name is oblio23. I wonder if she is/was a big fan of the movie
Brian D 6:19:18 PM
wonderful film. Our elementary school would show it occasionally on weekends in the 70s. They always had the best candy table in the lobby too. Stuff just not always available at the convenience store
Lizbot (host) 6:20:34 PM
@ROb - Oh, I wonder...I am gonna guess yes!
Lizbot (host) 6:21:09 PM
@Brian D- Wow, where'd you go to elementary school? I WISH mine showed us stuff like that!
Brian D 6:21:24 PM
Adrian Belew me away. Great sounds coming out of that guy
Lizbot (host) 6:21:26 PM
@Brian D - Candy table?! Whaaaaaat?!
Rob from Maryland 6:22:12 PM
@Brian D :-). Good thing this Fish Head song isn't a cover ...
Lizbot (host) 6:22:42 PM
@Brian D - One of the last shows I saw in the months leading up to the pandemic was Belew at Ardmore Music Hall. Mickey from The Sprawl and Mr. Various were there too
Brian D 6:22:48 PM
Pearl S Buck Elementary School . 5 min walk from home. Yeah they had a once a month or so weekend movie or multiple movies. Probably the PTA put that on.
Brian D 6:23:03 PM
Levittown PA
Lizbot (host) 6:23:40 PM
@Brian D - We had some good assemblies at my elementary school, but I mostly just remember the ones about "stranger danger" and the horrors of not brushing your teeth
Lizbot (host) 6:24:54 PM
@Brian D - We DID however have folk singer ODETTA visit our school!, but my parents somehow managed to organize that one
Brian D 6:26:34 PM
Red AND PURPLE (grape) Swedish Fish. Shoelace red and chocolate "licorice ". Candy bracelets and necklaces. Zotz. Chuckles. Smarties. Razzles. Wax lips etc etc
Brian D 6:27:35 PM
Fun Dip. Goldrush candy gum "nuggets " in a lil pouch
Lizbot (host) 6:27:49 PM
wot?! Purple?! Man, now I want that very specific perfumey-sweetness of Swedish Fish...
Rob from Maryland 6:27:51 PM
My elementary school (and middle and high too) didn't have visiting musicians. :-(
Lizbot (host) 6:28:54 PM
@Brian D - I used to buy Fun Dip at the snack bar at the community pool just for those white Lik 'em sticks. I'd toss the powder. Tried those as an adult and couldn't stomach it
Rob from Maryland 6:29:33 PM
We did have a mandatory assembly though, that was supposed to be about something positive but it instead was the movie musical "Bye Bye Birdie" which is TERRIBLE
Lizbot (host) 6:30:20 PM
Smarties, candy necklaces and wax lips were staples of my childhood peers' bday party goody bags. Wax lips were kinda crap, but it was fun to eat the necklaces off one's neck
Brian D 6:30:34 PM
Chicago (when they had Transit Authority in their name) played the high school probably the year i was born (1969). The music teacher was still there when i was in high school mid 80s. He loved to tell how the "cool kids" made it a point to NOT go to the concert and brag about it. He said they were great!
Lizbot (host) 6:31:11 PM
@Rob - Ann Margret in Bye Bye Birdie is kinda scary! Scarier than when she was in Ken Russell's movie version of "Tommy"!
Brian D 6:31:46 PM
Great song. This guy is a bit wacky tho
Alan Pasnyk 6:31:50 PM
No visiting musicians here, but I did get to be Sound Technician for several years in High School...
Lizbot (host) 6:32:14 PM
@Brian D - oh my GOD! HOW did that happen?! I want to time-travel back to your school and shake the hand of that music teacher!
Rob from Maryland 6:33:27 PM
@Lizbot, no wonder the 7th or 8th grade me hated that movie.
Lizbot (host) 6:34:19 PM
@Rob, Brian, Alan, et al: Most of my school's assemblies were of the cautionary tale variety, but occasionally we'd have a crummy magician or the company that pitched how much amazing swag we could earn by selling wrapping paper door to door for our school
Brian D 6:36:31 PM
Mr Rellik.
Lizbot (host) 6:36:35 PM
@ROb - 7th/8th grade you was right! I could never get into Bye Bye Birdie. Same goes for Grease.
Alan Pasnyk 6:37:09 PM
@ Lizbot: Was also the victim of having to sell light bulbs, etc. in grade school, once got thrown out of the local bakery for trying to sell stuff to customers...It all seems Real Funny now...
Lizbot (host) 6:37:47 PM
@Brian D - Mr. Rellik, a tip of the hat to you!
Lizbot (host) 6:38:50 PM
@Alan - Amazing how much they sent us 8 and 9 year olds door to door to the houses of total strangers, AFTER drilling us repeatedly about "stranger danger". All for the good of the school!
Lizbot (host) 6:41:32 PM
@Alan - I was a Girl Scout as well, and back then you had to go door to door with an order form and then go back later to deliver the cookies once you filled the orders from the "cookie mom" inventory person. Girl Scouts these days have the same light bulb bakery sales scheme you did - They're just set up at tables right next to grocery store entrances! TABLES! with CHAIRS! and they have the cookies already, right THERE! We would get in trouble for that! Kids these days...[shakes fist]
Alan Pasnyk 6:43:34 PM
In all fairness, I had a really good music teacher in grade school, when I think back to what she had to pit up with us kids, she had almost Infinite Patience!
Lizbot (host) 6:46:57 PM
@Alan - I am perpetually amazed with the near-impossible levels of patience exercised by teachers every day! My parents were both teachers and I don't think I could ever handle it! I heard about the struggles first hand growing up.
Lizbot (host) 6:49:00 PM
@Alan, Brian D.,Rob - My elementary school music teacher amazingly was named Mr. Sessions! He taught me clarinet and he always wore interactive novelty pins that had moving parts, usually with a little string you could pull and, for example, the plastic spider pin's legs would move up and down. He had a giant Ned Flanders mustache.
Alan Pasnyk 6:51:48 PM
Just maybe... All that patience paid off !!!!
Rob from Maryland 6:52:39 PM
Why are we sleeping anyway?
Rob from Maryland 6:54:20 PM
@Lizbot, what a wonderful music teacher! I had a 3rd grade one that caned me in front of the class in the private school I was in that year (only 2 years were in private school, the other 10 were public school. Ah, the life of a military brat)
Lizbot (host) 6:54:33 PM
@Rob - Indeed. Truer words. Actually, I often wonder, why aren't I sleeping?
Rob from Maryland 6:55:20 PM
@Lizbot, hopefully you got more than the 4.5 hours Rosasolis Dream had Sunday night. Her show was awesome nevertheless
Lizbot (host) 6:56:35 PM
@Rob - Oh no! That sounds more akin to my dad's 40s Catholic elementary school experiences! Clubbed ears and getting thwacked with a ruler on the hand by a nun if you made a mistake. Same goes for my mom's German piano teacher, who kept his ruler visible in case of mistakes! She had to practice on a cardboard keyboard replica before she could play a real piano!
Rob from Maryland 7:02:18 PM
@Lizbot, that is even crueler. Jeez.
Rob from Maryland 7:08:07 PM
Seeeeeeeeee the carpet of the sun
Lizbot (host) 7:09:00 PM
@Rob - My dad was born in '39 and was catholic-schooled his entire education. Some of those nuns really did a number on him.
Alan Pasnyk 7:21:01 PM
