The Harlem Hamfats were pretty well known as an ensemble that backed different singers; the McCoy brothers were the most famous on their own terms.

Great show start with the gospel set, thanks. The metaphors in "Christian Automobile" by the Dixie Hummingbirds are just a delight -- and very meaningful, no matter what your beliefs are! Do we know who composed that song? Was it a Hummingbirds member or an outside songster?

I think the "Christian Automobile" car references even outdo the train metaphors in the early country music gospel classic "Life's Railway to Heaven."

There is a little video of G.E. Smith talking about Mike Bloomfield's hacked away Telecaster guitar. The very guitar Mike played at Newport w Dylan. The top of the body is sawed near the neck to create a double cutaway of sorts.

I've seen that. Did Mike have it hacked away or a later owner? Can't recall.

I think it was hacked after Mike when the next owner who was a left handed player wanted to make it easier to play.

I'm thinking the featured male solo vocalist on "St. Louis Blues" with Ethel Waters was not Princeton's own Paul Robeson ... but he does sound somewhat like Robeson ... which of course is a major compliment!

Quite an impressive deep voice
