Ookla the Mok 10:30:36 AM
phew that horn
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:31:15 AM
Sounds nice doesn't it!
Ookla the Mok 10:32:48 AM
do any of the players get recognition or was it all the singer back then?
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:33:51 AM
The Harlem Hamfats were pretty well known as an ensemble that backed different singers; the McCoy brothers were the most famous on their own terms.

The trumpet on Mellow Little Devil was Herb Morland
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:34:47 AM
Great show start with the gospel set, thanks. The metaphors in "Christian Automobile" by the Dixie Hummingbirds are just a delight -- and very meaningful, no matter what your beliefs are! Do we know who composed that song? Was it a Hummingbirds member or an outside songster?
Ookla the Mok 10:37:54 AM
cool website

Richard from Rocky Hill 10:38:19 AM
I think the "Christian Automobile" car references even outdo the train metaphors in the early country music gospel classic "Life's Railway to Heaven."
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:40:49 AM
I'm seeing the track credited to a J. Archie @Richard
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:42:06 AM
Hmmmm ... thanks! When I have a few minutes I'll want to see if I can find out more about J. Archie. I'll let you know.

Discogs has him as Jessie Archie, Alias of Ira Tucker: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ira_Tucker
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:52:34 AM
Thanks for the legwork, much appreciated!
Brian D 10:58:24 AM
what a band
Richard from Rocky Hill 11:00:03 AM
Ahhh ... so "Jessie Archie" was a nom de plume of Dixie Hummingbirds lead singer Ira Tucker.
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:01:59 AM
looks so!
Brian D 11:04:27 AM
There is a little video of G.E. Smith talking about Mike Bloomfield's hacked away Telecaster guitar. The very guitar Mike played at Newport w Dylan. The top of the body is sawed near the neck to create a double cutaway of sorts.
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:04:53 AM
I've seen that. Did Mike have it hacked away or a later owner? Can't recall.
Brian D 11:07:46 AM
I think it was hacked after Mike when the next owner who was a left handed player wanted to make it easier to play.
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:08:05 AM
kind of a shame!

Richard from Rocky Hill 11:28:06 AM
I'm thinking the featured male solo vocalist on "St. Louis Blues" with Ethel Waters was not Princeton's own Paul Robeson ... but he does sound somewhat like Robeson ... which of course is a major compliment!
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:32:05 AM
Quite an impressive deep voice
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:32:25 AM
I've been trying without much success to find out more about that particular recording...
