Sonny Boy III (host) 10:00:33 AM
Hello everyone!
Christine 🦊 10:06:23 AM
Good morning, Sonny Boy Williamson the 3rd 🌄
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:06:31 AM
Good morning Christine!
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:15:21 AM
Good morning SBW IIIrd! As a bluegrass person, I always enjoy these blues-related early country/western swing, etc. Very full, shining but mellow lead vocalist on this Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys version of "Cotton Eyed Joe." Do you know who it was? I don't think it was Wills himself, was it?
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:17:24 AM
I agree with you, "Cotton Eyed Joe" does have a minstrel show vibe to it. Could be its origins. As you noted, it's also in the common bluegrass fiddle repertoire.
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:18:44 AM
Tommy Duncan apparently!
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:20:53 AM
Of course, Tommy Duncan. Thank you!
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:21:05 AM
:)
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:23:19 AM
These powerful, haunting "Cotton Eyed Joe" versions by Nina Simone and Karen Dalton ... oh my! I had no idea, none. Thanks again, SBW IIIrd.
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:23:37 AM
I know! Like a totally different song.
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:25:00 AM
BTW, Karen Dalton's rendition allows me in my mind's ear to hear what it would have sounded like if the late, great Fred Neil had performed it ...
Christine 🦊 10:25:38 AM
I had never heard Nina Simone's rendition of "Cotton Eyed Joe" before. Wow! Same for Karen Dalton.

DJ SonnyBoyWilliamsonIII, this is a super idea! Biggest CHEERS to you!

-ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ-💀 10:32:25 AM

Sonny Boy III (host) 10:32:33 AM
hahaha a divisive decision

It was the correct call
Brenda Tingstrom 10:41:16 AM
thank you for playing all of those cotton eyed joe songs. it was enlightening and yes, definitely racist. how could it not be. i really enjoyed Nina's version as the syncopation i think more accurately captures the pain and disrespect inherent in the song. thanks to the dj!!! i love WPRB
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:42:09 AM
Thanks Brenda!

Christine 🦊 10:49:41 AM
Interestingly, DJ Krista played the Charlie Parr rendition of "Ain't No Grave Hold My Body Down" on her show this morning.
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:50:07 AM
I wasn't able to tune in! Funny how that happens sometimes.
Christine 🦊 10:51:21 AM
Krista's show this morning was a eldritch gathering of creepy/eerie/Halloween songs. 👻 🎃
Christine 🦊 10:52:07 AM
I love when that happens! 💕 Different versions, different artists, same song.
-ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ-💀 10:53:52 AM
Interestingly, the song “Cain't No Grave Hold My Body Down” was used at the end of an episode of What We Do In The Shadows a tv show about Vampires.
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:55:44 AM
It's coming back for a new season soon isn't it?

@MrM 💀, good information. I should check out the show. Last year I saw the movie by Taika Waititi.

Got the Hulus? Christine? Watch it!! Just watched the first two seasons TWICE!

-ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ-💀 11:14:03 AM
I’m luving this playlist! Many thanks, DJ SonnyBoyWilliamsonIII ☀️
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:17:29 AM
Thanks Mr. M! I always like the credits songs for WWD in the Shadows. I've played on my show a song called "The Devil Caught Me Nappin" that they use in one episode. I can't find anything out about the song though!
-ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ-💀 11:18:19 AM
Lemme sleuth. BRB
-ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ-💀 11:29:16 AM
Mmmm. I guess the two options that came up right quick aren’t the same song?? Remember any episode details?
-ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ-💀 11:31:55 AM
I keep reading “flugelhorn” everywhere. Should I get one??
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:31:55 AM
https://whatwedointheshadows.fandom.com/wiki/The_Curse -- the song is credited to Andrea and Ervin Litkei (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ervin_Litkei). He was better known for writing military marches...
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:32:18 AM
Seems like the universe is telling you to invest in one!
-ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ-💀 11:34:12 AM
Oh that was the first result I saw, just dismissed it as you said you weren’t finding anything! The EnterWebs is incredible.
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:34:55 AM
Well, I found Ervine Litkei but I thought it was a mistake since the song is no military march. But Wikipedia says he married an "Andrea." Must be him then!
Richard from Rocky Hill 11:37:11 AM
Well, for the love of Lil ! (And the great Louis Jordan!) That was one swingin' track, jack!
-ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ-💀 11:40:15 AM
Nandor’s password is *impenetrable fortress* 😝
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:41:21 AM
I agree Richard! Jordan rarely disappoints. There's a reason he was "King of the Jukebox."
-ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ-💀 11:44:08 AM
Tunefind dot com has the same song info. Looking forward to hearing it on your show!
-ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ-💀 11:46:05 AM
