Esoterica (host) 8:23:04 PM
Hi, Rob!
Esoterica (host) 8:24:23 PM
Keith Kessler’s “Don’t Crowd Me” is an anthem to garage-punk fans, with a sound to match the intensity of the lyrics: “Inside looking out, got no place to shout … I’m locked inside this place, problems I can’t face, I’m getting out breaking free … don’t crowd me! / My soul is cramped and bare, there’s freedom I can’t share … my independence crushed, don’t crowd me, give me air, give me time …” Keith Kessler recorded “Don’t Crowd Me” at Kearney Barton’s Audio Recording Studio at 2227 5th Avenue

Hi Ambrose!
Ambrose Hughes 8:45:11 PM
I had a cousin that went to an all boys Catholic Grammar School that was warned by the Principle, (a priest), to "get that hair cut lad or you'll be expelled", my cousin didn't listen, got kicked out of school and kicked out of his home because he "disobeyed" the good padre, went to England never to return.
Esoterica (host) 8:45:38 PM
wow, quite a story, ambrose

Evelyn Jai Hamburger 9:09:42 PM
Good evening Esoterica :)
Richard from Rocky Hill 9:10:24 PM
And my oh MY! I was just educating myself about Marlena Shaw, and saw that she recorded two albums with the great (indeed, very great) jazz bandleader, composer, sax and trumpet player Benny Carter (who was notably a visiting artist/instructor at Princeton University in the 1990s). She was a guest vocalist on the Benny Carter Songbook, vols 1 and 2 (1996 & '97). That's very impressive!
Evelyn Jai Hamburger 9:10:59 PM
Could you play Arlo Parks song Cola please?
Esoterica (host) 9:11:00 PM
wow, richard. that is cool. and worth mentioning at next mic break.
Ambrose Hughes 9:11:13 PM
@Esoterica, hard to argue with you on that

According to the definitive 2-volume biography Benny Carter: A Life in American Music (which I just happened to have within arm's length! LOL) Marlena Shaw participated in two Benny Carter tours of Japan in the 1990s. My, my!
Evelyn Jai Hamburger 9:22:40 PM

Ossy Hyouka 10:02:40 PM
That WWWOB on WDAS station every Sunday night plays the best from the 60s - 90s like Gladys Knight, The Chi Lites, Whisperers, Patrice Rushen, Blue Magic, Phyllis Hyman, Teddy Pendegrass, The Supremes and countless others! Hence some of the old school songs you played, gracuously reminds me of that.
Selecta Jerry 10:02:43 PM
So much music so many changing times and life
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:03:05 PM
@ Selecta Jerry I'm still laughing at the K-Tel Records commercial reference, I swear! :-)) For you (comparative) youngsters ... K-Tel would repackage Top 40 radio hits from the 1950s and '60s into mighty nostalgia LPs and shill them via commercials on late night local TV stations. (How many wonderfully cheesy old monster movies did I watch on late nite shows out of NYC and Philly that were sponsored by K-Tel?!!)
Esoterica (host) 10:03:06 PM
love that, thank you, ossy:)
Selecta Jerry 10:03:46 PM
Yeah so true richard
Selecta Jerry 10:04:39 PM
I remember them on the uhf channels on tv
Christine 🦊 10:05:33 PM
@Selecta Jerry, your K-Tel reference is bringing back memories of watching TV in the 1970s...
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:05:40 PM
And K-Tel would super-sweeten their offers will additional LPs, having the faceless voiceover pitch man intone, "But wait! There's more! If you order right now, you'll also get -- free! -- the must-have collection "Grooviest Songs From The Summer Of Love!" ... (or something like that, but even cheesier) ...
Selecta Jerry 10:06:00 PM

Rob from Maryland 10:12:53 PM
that's a good song title
Christine 🦊 10:13:28 PM
@Rob, that link is wild. A very mixed bag there!
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:14:11 PM
@ Selecta Jerry Y'know, I can't decide which of the many, many tidbits of vital popular music culture & history information I've ingested tonight has been the most profound ... It's a close call between 1) Marlena Shaw toured and recorded with Benny Carter, and 2) K-Tel was also shilling its big hit collection LPs in the UK!
Esoterica (host) 10:14:33 PM
i will check that out, rob after the show, thx for posting...
Selecta Jerry 10:14:44 PM
.56 cents they are going for on discogs 🤪😂🤣
Selecta Jerry 10:15:39 PM
Thats why i listen to wprb richard. Always an education
Rob from Maryland 10:16:49 PM
@Christine, it is a mixed bag. I can tell you I played Mungo Jerry, Nazareth, Mud, Suzi Quatro, and a few more songs a whole lot and skipped over quite a few.
jimbeaux 10:16:59 PM
With 20 tracks per LP, K-tel records were seriously audiophile quality! :) If 16rpm were more common, they coulda crammed 40 tracks on!
Selecta Jerry 10:17:30 PM
🤣🤣😂jimbeaux
Rob from Maryland 10:17:57 PM
I love it, 0.40 pounds plus 17 pounds shipping ...
Esoterica (host) 10:18:13 PM
i love nazareth!
Selecta Jerry 10:18:29 PM
K-tel’s investors ears must be burning tonight
Rob from Maryland 10:20:39 PM

Rob from Maryland 10:24:52 PM
@Esoterica, I only know Nazareth through some British hits plus Love Hurts which I have heard so much I could happily never hear it again
Rob from Maryland 10:25:10 PM
*But I like what I know from the band
Selecta Jerry 10:26:26 PM
Nazareth PA had a cool race way
Esoterica (host) 10:26:30 PM
i had hair of the dog... i liked that song too haha
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:27:29 PM
@ Selecta Jerry And high indeed is the education dispensed on your worthy & righteous WPRB show "Sounds of the Caribbean." If someone had told me a year ago that I'd actually enjoy and even become intrigued by Reggae, Zouk and Ska, I'd have said they were smoking too much ganja!
Evelyn Jai Hamburger 10:28:54 PM
You are reading my mind Esoterica! I was going to request Love!
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:29:10 PM
Hmmmm ... there's just gotta be a K-Tel Caribbean collection, right? ... Maybe if I search on eBay ... ;-)
Selecta Jerry 10:29:31 PM
