emergency tone! But no message. Back to blues....
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:09:10 AM
Ok I thought so. Feels great to be spinning LPs again. Now if we could only get set up for 78s...
-ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ-💀 10:13:07 AM
Can you put on both 33 + 45 = guess what?!? I saw a player with that as the option for 78s. Seemed ridiculous. Is it common??
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:14:34 AM
Some players do have it (some you have to hold down 33 and 45), but old 78s should require a different needle as well. There are some unusual examples of modern records issued in a 78 format.
-ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ-💀 10:20:32 AM
Interesting. Would the unusual modern records need a different needle from old 78s??
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:21:42 AM
I believe they'd use a modern needle but at 78 rpm

Sonny Boy III (host) 10:36:44 AM
thanks richard! and good morning all!
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:41:49 AM
I really enjoyed, with great interest, Walter Taylor's "Deal Rag." Bluegrass groups -- mostly notably Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs & the Foggy Mountain Boys -- later recorded that number as "Don't Let Your Deal Go Down." It was a natural for Flatt & Scruggs because the chord progression is essentially identical (although in a different key) to their very popular version of "Salty Dog Blues," another song with obvious African-American roots in ragtime and/or early New Orleans jazz.
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:43:43 AM
It's a great recording! I know the Mississippi Sheiks Recorded "Honey Baby Let the Deal Go Down" but I'm not sure off the top of my head if it's related musically
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:44:20 AM
And how WONDERFUL that you're back broadcasting live from the WPRB studios! Maybe things gonna be alright after all.

Blues for Brunch
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:49:21 AM
Do listener's remember the earlier iteration of this program as blues for breakfast?
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:49:26 AM
*listeners
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:51:59 AM
Hmmmm ... thanks, I'll check out that Sheiks recording. It's well known how the blues greatly influenced Bill Monroe's development of bluegrass via Arnold Schultz, a blues guitarist (and also occasional fiddler) who befriended the young Bill in Rosine, Kentucky. But few know that early jazz hugely influenced seminal bluegrass banjo picker Earl Scruggs.
Brian D 10:53:18 AM
This sounds great
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:53:44 AM
Etta Baker with her take on "Never Let Your Deal Go Down"!
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:55:43 AM
"Bugle Call Rag" and "Farewell Blues," now bluegrass banjo standards via Scruggs' versions weren't composed by Earl (although, in fairness, he never claimed they were). He certainly heard them on early Dixieland jazz 78s that he and his family enjoyed during his youth.
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:56:07 AM
Very cool!
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:57:58 AM
Thanks, I'll check out that Etta Baker recording. Y'know, I learn so much from you and fellow listeners that I should have signed up for "Blues Off the Record" as a class for academic credit LOL.
Ookla the Mok 10:59:21 AM
blues for breakfast turned me into a WPRB listener :)
Richard from Rocky Hill 11:00:04 AM
I meant to write, check out that Etta Baker recording further ...

I'm thinking this version of "Jump In The Line," by Joseph Spence or other artist(s) directly influenced Byron Lee & the Dragonaires later killer recordings "Jump Up" and "Jump Up and Get on Bad."
Jim Floyd 11:50:31 AM
