Can you put on both 33 + 45 = guess what?!? I saw a player with that as the option for 78s. Seemed ridiculous. Is it common??

Some players do have it (some you have to hold down 33 and 45), but old 78s should require a different needle as well. There are some unusual examples of modern records issued in a 78 format.

I really enjoyed, with great interest, Walter Taylor's "Deal Rag." Bluegrass groups -- mostly notably Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs & the Foggy Mountain Boys -- later recorded that number as "Don't Let Your Deal Go Down." It was a natural for Flatt & Scruggs because the chord progression is essentially identical (although in a different key) to their very popular version of "Salty Dog Blues," another song with obvious African-American roots in ragtime and/or early New Orleans jazz.

It's a great recording! I know the Mississippi Sheiks Recorded "Honey Baby Let the Deal Go Down" but I'm not sure off the top of my head if it's related musically

And how WONDERFUL that you're back broadcasting live from the WPRB studios! Maybe things gonna be alright after all.

Hmmmm ... thanks, I'll check out that Sheiks recording. It's well known how the blues greatly influenced Bill Monroe's development of bluegrass via Arnold Schultz, a blues guitarist (and also occasional fiddler) who befriended the young Bill in Rosine, Kentucky. But few know that early jazz hugely influenced seminal bluegrass banjo picker Earl Scruggs.

"Bugle Call Rag" and "Farewell Blues," now bluegrass banjo standards via Scruggs' versions weren't composed by Earl (although, in fairness, he never claimed they were). He certainly heard them on early Dixieland jazz 78s that he and his family enjoyed during his youth.
