A Tribute to Julz Sale, founder/vocalist/guitarist of influential post-punk band Delta 5, who passed away this week. Plus Music to Watch Lightning By!

5:03 PM		Delta 5 Anticipation Anticipation / You Rough Trade 1980 At the beginning of the show today is a tribute to Julz Sale, founder/vocalist/guitarist of the influential post-punk band Delta 5, who passed away from cancer on September 20th in her adopted country of Thailand. Delta 5 formed out of the art school scene at Leeds University. Their bassy funk-punk sound with feminist political lyrics is most famously heard in their break-out single, Mind Your Own Business. Much in the style of another, more famous Leeds band, Gang of Four, Delta 5 featured two bassists, Ros Allen and Bethan Peters. This band's relatively small output gained a cult following continuing decades after they disbanded, and Julz worked for Delta 5's home label of Rough Trade for many years after the band was active.

@Alan - hmmm, I think there are some points of comparison for sure, but also these lyrics can be deceptively complex. And when I think of the instrumentation, bass always comes to the fore of my mind with Delta 5

@Alan - I remember Weingart played all of Pete Seeger's Carnegie Hall 1963 live album once. Especially for tributes it's totally fine to. I think that's when it makes most sense. I don't normally just play a whole album in order for a tribute, though, I go through and assemble a playlist from my favorites of that artist's career

Like the StereoTotale tribute earlier this year, so sad but great to hear the wonderful music. Love the bassist tribute too! Going to tailgate a few Primus songs on Sat night in Asbury Pk. Sit out on some chairs outside the venue eat a few Mogo Korean tacos.

@Alan & Rob - I think one or both of you disagreed with me on this point before, but catbirds' call is truly one of the ONLY birdcalls in this region that I truly can't stand! I think likening it to the sound of cats is an insult to cats everywhere! Maybe the whiniest cat ever born...

Hi Alan! Yep. Our neighborhood catbirds and House Wrens are gone, but they are still in the parks (better habitat)

@Alan & Rob - What's more, the catbirds in my yard are quite relentless and fearless about defending their nests/turf, and they seem to think me being on my porch is a massive code red threat. I'm out there reading often and they perch very close to me and yeeeeow at me nonstop!

Saw them at same venue few years ago w Mickey Dean Ween Band opening up the show That's when we first discovered Mogo Korean right on the Bo'walk there. Primus is great fun . They're doing an entire Rush lp tribute then greatest hits this tour. But don't need to see the whole show. Just lil tailgate this time

Catbirds LOVE Birdbaths. One time in the Spring (Doylestown) one showed up and started bugging me to put up the birdbath, I did and he/she was in it in 5 miinutes!!!

@Alan, I love when that happens. We had a robin pair that remembered the super hot spell when I put out bowls with water for them to drink/cool off in. For the next two summers, when it got hot, they would get closer to me than usual and look up at me

If you give a catbird a bath, it will ask for a swimming pool

@Rob and @Alan - Be sure to take slo-mo video of the birds bathing. It's highly entertaining. I always video my budgies and my conure bathing. Mostly the budgies because the conure makes a huge mess and soaks my camera if I get anywhere near him during his sacred bathing routine. If you turn on the kitchen sink, he immediately flies over and sticks his head in. Same conure at a shore house almost went all the way down a garbage disposal in an unfamiliar sink!

@Alan - He has a natural burrowing instinct and saw a nice dark hole right by a lovely conure-sized sink waterfall for bathing and he naturally thought that was nice place to hang out

In the 70s, a friend heard a song he liked on the radio, didn't completely remember the name of the band. He asked for the latest Blondie album for Christmas, and that was the album he wanted. The other possibility was Budgie

@Christine - yeah, I think he's pretty amazing. Each of his albums are very distinct from each other. The one from before 2020, Peasant, is more like demented folk...honestly, that was is undefinable

@Rob - Every once in a while I get a kick out of a cover that's very close to the original, like when The Jam covered And Your Bird Can Sing, but in general, it's far more fun to have something that diverges greatly, like when The Residents cover James Brown or Hank Williams

Today on Austin's show I learned there was a "glitch music" sub-genre. See? PRB is educational on a daily basis!

@Christine - Nice! I love some glitch! that genre co-inhabited the folktronic genre for a bit in the early to mid 2000s

@Christine - Flanafi with Ape School goes in a glitch direction at times, but is also so lo-fi and word soup-y,. I love it!

The great Philly jazz bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma was playing Esther Phillips at his house last week when my husband visited, so I had to play some Ester this week!
