At the beginning of the show today is a tribute to Julz Sale, founder/vocalist/guitarist of the influential post-punk band Delta 5, who passed away from cancer on September 20th in her adopted country of Thailand. Delta 5 formed out of the art school scene at Leeds University. Their bassy funk-punk sound with feminist political lyrics is most famously heard in their break-out single, Mind Your Own Business. Much in the style of another, more famous Leeds band, Gang of Four, Delta 5 featured two bassists, Ros Allen and Bethan Peters. This band's relatively small output gained a cult following continuing decades after they disbanded, and Julz worked for Delta 5's home label of Rough Trade for many years after the band was active.

hello hello!
Andy Wing 5:01:16 PM
Afternoon all!
Andy Wing 5:02:58 PM
Oh, no! We'll have to mind our own ice cream in tribute.
Alan Pasnyk 5:03:35 PM
1011101010101 Hi Lizbot!
Lizbot (host) 5:04:10 PM
Hey Andy! Hey Alan!
Lizbot (host) 5:04:39 PM
I was going to play the original Anticipation, but since I've heard it to much more, I am playing this alternate take with piano
Alan Pasnyk 5:05:29 PM
Nice of you to do this tribute Lizbot...
Rob from Maryland 5:06:06 PM
can I interfere in your crisis?
Lizbot (host) 5:06:30 PM
@Alan - I love Delta 5. Far too many musicians whose bands I've loved for decades have passed recently.
Lizbot (host) 5:06:34 PM
Hi Rob!
Rob from Maryland 5:06:48 PM
I'm sad to learn that Ms Sale has passed away. Thank you for doing this tribute.
Lizbot (host) 5:07:18 PM
@Rob - Yeah, I am sad for the reason, but happy to play a chunk of Delta 5 on air
Rob from Maryland 5:07:21 PM
Hi Lizbot! I cut away from the 5 pm videowebcast thingy to listen to Delta 5
Lizbot (host) 5:07:29 PM
@Rob - Nice!
Andy Wing 5:07:36 PM
This one of those truly unique hits.
Rob from Maryland 5:07:46 PM
@Andy W, yes
Lizbot (host) 5:07:54 PM
@Rob - WPRB: Encouraging playing hooky from work/school since 1940
Rob from Maryland 5:08:16 PM
I think I have the 7" of this song song in the basement
Rob from Maryland 5:08:26 PM
@Lizbot, heck yeah
Lizbot (host) 5:08:28 PM
@Andy - Yeah, this song is such a classic and the bassline is so great
Rob from Maryland 5:09:18 PM
I once had a password that used a Delta 5 lyric
Lizbot (host) 5:09:59 PM
@Rob - Hmmmmm... Now I'm guessing which...
Rob from Maryland 5:10:00 PM
Mind Your Own Business is a longtime favorite, ever since I heard it c. 1980
Alan Pasnyk 5:10:06 PM
The "Ultimate Don't Hassle Me" song says it all for the rest of us....
Lizbot (host) 5:10:15 PM
@Rob - Two basses is better than one!
Lizbot (host) 5:10:37 PM
Hi Alan! Yes, it truly is
Rob from Maryland 5:11:21 PM
@Lizbot, yup! I don't reuse passwords so nobody can try that lyric (whatever it is) now
Andy Wing 5:11:25 PM
They had to be an influence on tUnEyArDs
Rob from Maryland 5:11:51 PM
Two basses are better than one. Standup, smallmouth, any kind of base
Rob from Maryland 5:12:41 PM
And in other news, I found the cd with the first two Mag Fields records on it, so I can listen to all the Susan Anway songs I missed the other Thursday
Lizbot (host) 5:13:23 PM
@Andy - Huh, yeah, that could be.
Lizbot (host) 5:14:05 PM
@Rob - ha! I'll whip out my super bass-o-matic 76 and consume many bass for dinner tonight
Rob from Maryland 5:15:02 PM

Alan Pasnyk 5:15:12 PM
Maybe DEVOesque ?? Simple concepts, simple Lyrics ???
Alan Pasnyk 5:16:24 PM
(That was a Question, not a statement)
Lizbot (host) 5:17:10 PM
@Rob - Find a chunk of time to listen on a wistful afternoon to Distant Plastic Trees/The Wayward Bus. They're great back to back. I love Susan Anway's voice to much. I can't believe we lost Susan Anway and Julz Sale within a couple of weeks
Rob from Maryland 5:18:44 PM
Lizbot, I will. Or I will go on a long-enough localish birding trip and play that cd.
Lizbot (host) 5:18:54 PM
@Alan - hmmm, I think there are some points of comparison for sure, but also these lyrics can be deceptively complex. And when I think of the instrumentation, bass always comes to the fore of my mind with Delta 5
Rob from Maryland 5:18:55 PM
And back to my videowebcasthingy
Lizbot (host) 5:19:45 PM
@Rob - I endorse any and all birding trips. I just received a mailing list email about early morning birdwalks at I think it was The Woodlands. I am never out and about early to do those before my day begins!
Alan Pasnyk 5:26:26 PM
(Glued to the Laptop & FM for the rest of the Tribute)
Lizbot (host) 5:29:00 PM
@Alan - Sadly, the tribute is short!
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 5:29:17 PM
Always glad to hear Mick Karn’s gooey bass.
Lizbot (host) 5:29:47 PM
@Dave - Hi! Yes, I'm always down for this oozy gooey taffy-pull bass
Alan Pasnyk 5:30:35 PM
@ Lizbot: I think I once heard a DJ at WPRB say that you're not allowed to play an entire Album. Is that true??
Alan Pasnyk 5:31:31 PM
(Although with Classical Music that would be impossible...??)
Lizbot (host) 5:31:38 PM
@Alan - Not exactly, no. You can
Lizbot (host) 5:32:14 PM
And now Philly's own Billy Paul
Alan Pasnyk 5:32:26 PM
@ Lizbot: Thanks, That was more than 10 yrs ago, must have heard wrong..
Alan Pasnyk 5:33:37 PM
Trying to shake Readie out of the trees with "False Faces" ?? :)
Andy Wing 5:34:09 PM
Sleep's "Jerusalem" is a whole album, right?
Lizbot (host) 5:34:18 PM
@Alan - I remember Weingart played all of Pete Seeger's Carnegie Hall 1963 live album once. Especially for tributes it's totally fine to. I think that's when it makes most sense. I don't normally just play a whole album in order for a tribute, though, I go through and assemble a playlist from my favorites of that artist's career
Brian D 5:34:53 PM
Like the StereoTotale tribute earlier this year, so sad but great to hear the wonderful music. Love the bassist tribute too! Going to tailgate a few Primus songs on Sat night in Asbury Pk. Sit out on some chairs outside the venue eat a few Mogo Korean tacos.
Lizbot (host) 5:35:04 PM
@Alan - haha, let's see if it works!
Lizbot (host) 5:35:10 PM
Hi Brian D!
Alan Pasnyk 5:35:35 PM
Lizbot, That's the best part of listening to a DJ, Like What's Next???
Lizbot (host) 5:36:04 PM
@Brian D - My god, Primus (a teenaged obsession of my husband's) plus Korean tacos (one of his favorite foods)...you might find him popping up at your tailgate!
Rob from Maryland 5:36:20 PM
@Lizbot, I recommend doing one of those early morning birdwalks if you can.
Lizbot (host) 5:36:29 PM
@Alan - We aim to surprise and appease!
Rob from Maryland 5:37:01 PM
Speaking of Asbury Park, did I see correctly that The Boss turned 72 today?
Lizbot (host) 5:37:05 PM
@Alan - Or rather, surprise and please?
Alan Pasnyk 5:37:42 PM
Hi Rob! First the Wren's go, and about now the Catbirds leave for parts Unknown..
Lizbot (host) 5:37:52 PM
@Rob - I just received notice that a friend is moving to Asbury Park from Philly so I may turn up there soon
Lizbot (host) 5:39:10 PM
@Alan & Rob - I think one or both of you disagreed with me on this point before, but catbirds' call is truly one of the ONLY birdcalls in this region that I truly can't stand! I think likening it to the sound of cats is an insult to cats everywhere! Maybe the whiniest cat ever born...
Rob from Maryland 5:40:09 PM
Hi Alan! Yep. Our neighborhood catbirds and House Wrens are gone, but they are still in the parks (better habitat)
Lizbot (host) 5:40:26 PM
@Alan & Rob - What's more, the catbirds in my yard are quite relentless and fearless about defending their nests/turf, and they seem to think me being on my porch is a massive code red threat. I'm out there reading often and they perch very close to me and yeeeeow at me nonstop!
Brian D 5:40:43 PM
Saw them at same venue few years ago w Mickey Dean Ween Band opening up the show That's when we first discovered Mogo Korean right on the Bo'walk there. Primus is great fun . They're doing an entire Rush lp tribute then greatest hits this tour. But don't need to see the whole show. Just lil tailgate this time
Rob from Maryland 5:40:50 PM
@Lizbot, yeah, visit your friend in Asb Park!
Rob from Maryland 5:41:39 PM
@Lizbot, those darn catbirds. They do have whiny voices
Alan Pasnyk 5:41:56 PM
Catbirds LOVE Birdbaths. One time in the Spring (Doylestown) one showed up and started bugging me to put up the birdbath, I did and he/she was in it in 5 miinutes!!!
Lizbot (host) 5:41:59 PM
I prefer In the Catbird Seat short story to an actual catbird
Rob from Maryland 5:42:55 PM
@Lizbot, +++. @Alan, neat!
Alan Pasnyk 5:43:27 PM
The thing is that bird flew back and Remembered from last year about the birdbayh It was bugging me from less than 10 feet away...
Alan Pasnyk 5:44:11 PM
I should have said "Mind Your Own Business!!!)
Lizbot (host) 5:44:43 PM
@Brian D - Ah, the Rush & Primus fans will converge. I don't know if I can handle all that! George prefers the Korean taco place on Germantown Ave
Lizbot (host) 5:45:21 PM
@Alan - Give a catbird a bath and they'll demand a spa next year!
Rob from Maryland 5:45:38 PM
@Alan, I love when that happens. We had a robin pair that remembered the super hot spell when I put out bowls with water for them to drink/cool off in. For the next two summers, when it got hot, they would get closer to me than usual and look up at me
Rob from Maryland 5:45:57 PM
If you give a catbird a bath, it will ask for a swimming pool
Alan Pasnyk 5:46:43 PM
Don' underestimate their tiny little GPS Brains!
Rob from Maryland 5:48:17 PM
try, try, I tried and we got nowhere
Lizbot (host) 5:48:33 PM
@Rob and @Alan - Be sure to take slo-mo video of the birds bathing. It's highly entertaining. I always video my budgies and my conure bathing. Mostly the budgies because the conure makes a huge mess and soaks my camera if I get anywhere near him during his sacred bathing routine. If you turn on the kitchen sink, he immediately flies over and sticks his head in. Same conure at a shore house almost went all the way down a garbage disposal in an unfamiliar sink!
Alan Pasnyk 5:49:51 PM
Yikes!!
DSM 5:51:15 PM
Hey Lizbot! Lightning seems to have passed here, but this is also great music to prep dinner to!
Lizbot (host) 5:52:23 PM
@Alan - He has a natural burrowing instinct and saw a nice dark hole right by a lovely conure-sized sink waterfall for bathing and he naturally thought that was nice place to hang out
Lizbot (host) 5:52:27 PM

Alan Pasnyk 6:23:03 PM
@ Lizbot: I would announce at the next mic break that the Upcoming break would feature Fripp! Keep 'em waiting!
Lizbot (host) 6:23:25 PM
@Rob - I love Juana. Would've loved to have seen this tour. it was just before the pandemic
Christine 🦊 6:24:19 PM

Christine 🦊 6:25:11 PM
I love most of those dinosaur descendants. 🐦

Alan Pasnyk 6:26:01 PM
They are Very Persistant Dinosaur Descendents!
Alan Pasnyk 6:27:53 PM
@ Christine: Will be out of chat range for Readie's show tomorrow, but high enough elevation for the FM radio to listen in...
Lizbot (host) 6:28:19 PM
@Christine - This rainy weather has been making me sleepy all day! I'd be napping now if I weren't at the helm of a radio station! I'm happy DJing, but after this I might have to go to bed early tonight
Alan Pasnyk 6:29:03 PM
....And wondering if she'll mention last week's sighting of the ISS??
George Korein 6:29:03 PM
U can’t hold no groove if you live in Woonsocket
Lizbot (host) 6:29:34 PM
@Alan - My Very Persistant Dinosaur Descendents are spoiled but too adorable to deny attention. Especially Fripp. He puffs up his neck feathers and charges anyone who dare disturb his slumber on my shirt at night
Lizbot (host) 6:29:39 PM
Georgeeeee
Lizbot (host) 6:30:57 PM
@Christine - My dino descendants got a nice bird bath yesterday and the day before. They have two bird baths that are identical, but they all crowd around the same one every time.
Christine 🦊 6:32:54 PM
Aww! 🐦💕
Christine 🦊 6:34:09 PM
@Alan, if I remember, I'll ask Readie in the chatroom about seeing the ISS last Friday. 🛰
Lizbot (host) 6:35:00 PM
@Christine - They have a lot of play spaces but they tend to all crowd into one and fight over the same cuttlebone, like a buncha toddlers at a Gymboree who see one kid pick up a toy and suddenly that is THE toy that all must have that moment

Alan Pasnyk 6:42:26 PM
(Still waiting for the Conure birdbath station ID............)
Lizbot (host) 6:45:31 PM
@Alan - Ah, yes. I was thinking of playing it before that mic break, but then I decided to use Horse Lords' "Macaw" as bed music instead....But more bird content to come cuz I'll work that station ID into the next mic break!
Alan Pasnyk 6:49:51 PM

Lizbot (host) 7:05:24 PM
It is want I had hoped for the Welsh band Budgie when I first heard of them, before I learned they aren't all that good!
Lizbot (host) 7:06:01 PM
(but they have great album cover art)
Rob from Maryland 7:06:58 PM
Budgie did have great cover art.
Christine 🦊 7:06:59 PM
Wow, these lyrics really are a kick in the heart 💗
Lizbot (host) 7:07:35 PM
@Rob - It's a band where I own a bunch of their posters and merchandise but don't like or listen to their music at all! I intend to frame a bunch of it and hang it in the bird room
Lizbot (host) 7:08:09 PM
@Christine - The crazy thing is, this album is called 2020...but came out in 2019. Richard Dawson knew what was around the corner!
Lizbot (host) 7:09:00 PM
"I know I must be paranoid This morning in memorial park I thought I caught a busker Sneak an ugly word into "Wonderwall" As I went by" - ha
Rob from Maryland 7:09:09 PM
In the 70s, a friend heard a song he liked on the radio, didn't completely remember the name of the band. He asked for the latest Blondie album for Christmas, and that was the album he wanted. The other possibility was Budgie
Lizbot (host) 7:10:10 PM
@Rob - wow, those are two very different musical experiences! I wanted to like Budgie based on their ridiculous art, so I gave them ample listens, but no, just no
Lizbot (host) 7:10:41 PM
@Rob - But those spacesuit budgies get me every time. And their ridiculous punny album names
Lizbot (host) 7:11:22 PM
These lyrics : "There's a Kurdish family on the ground floor Had a brick put through their kitchen window The police know who did this, still they do nothing It's lonely up here in Middle-England" wow. I love this dude
Christine 🦊 7:12:35 PM
I don't know him, but I immediately feel like I do know him. His approach is disarmingly direct.
Lizbot (host) 7:12:40 PM
Budgie's albums are sadly not impeckable
Lizbot (host) 7:14:30 PM
@Christine - yeah, I think he's pretty amazing. Each of his albums are very distinct from each other. The one from before 2020, Peasant, is more like demented folk...honestly, that was is undefinable
Rob from Maryland 7:15:35 PM
@Lizbot, that lyric you quoted about the Kurdish family is piercing
Rob from Maryland 7:16:37 PM
I see all those Budgie album names *groan*
Lizbot (host) 7:16:38 PM
@Rob - Yeah, timely and so sad
Lizbot (host) 7:16:44 PM
@ROb - haha!
Lizbot (host) 7:17:09 PM
@Christine and Rob - From Dawson's bio: "He worked in record stores for 10 years before starting a professional music career. He bought an inexpensive acoustic guitar, but accidentally broke it. After the guitar was repaired, he found it had a unique sound and he now uses it as his main instrument"
Rob from Maryland 7:18:43 PM
@Lizbot, I'll put him on my very long list of people to check out. Especially if I hear him again on this station (hint hint)
Rob from Maryland 7:19:08 PM
My taste in album covers is indeed impeckable
Lizbot (host) 7:19:16 PM
@Rob - You'll hear me play him again at some point. That album was on my favorites of 2019 list
Christine 🦊 7:19:22 PM
@Lizbot, that's really interesting. I have to find out more about Richard Dawson.
Lizbot (host) 7:20:06 PM
@Rob - Check out Budgie's If I Were Brittania I'd Waive The Rules album cover - My birds aspire to space flight and becoming bi-pedal!
Rob from Maryland 7:20:17 PM
UGH it's 7:20 and it's dark outside #WinterIsComing
Lizbot (host) 7:20:42 PM
@Christine - He's a fascinating guy. He has some other projects under other names, but RD is his main. moniker
Lizbot (host) 7:21:32 PM
@Rob - pretty soon it'll be dark for my entire show...that never ceases to mess with me! The real kicker was driving to the station and watching the sun set on my way to Princeton.
Rob from Maryland 7:21:33 PM
@Lizbot I saw the Britannia and Bandolier albums a lot in the bins in the 70s. But I never did buy any of them
Lizbot (host) 7:21:59 PM
@Rob - They were probably cheap (sorry)
Rob from Maryland 7:22:05 PM
@Lizbot, that is sad to watch the sun set before 5 pm
Lizbot (host) 7:22:12 PM
DAMMIT! I meant cheep! aw dang!
Rob from Maryland 7:22:18 PM
@Lizbot, they were che*p tricks
Lizbot (host) 7:22:34 PM
it's sad to mess up a pun so dumb
Rob from Maryland 7:22:51 PM
I've been there, Lizbot
Lizbot (host) 7:23:02 PM
@Rob - I teach my budgies cheep tricks all the time
Lizbot (host) 7:23:20 PM
I blame the early darkness and my general sleepiness today
Alan Pasnyk 7:28:32 PM
@ Lizbot: I listened to your "Autumnal" show
Christine 🦊 7:28:54 PM
Wow! Never heard this rendition before. The percussion was so cool earlier, like a timpani was being used.
Lizbot (host) 7:29:12 PM
@Alan - ah yeah, September Songs, or Autumn Sweater, whatever you wanna call it. I think it's legitimately autumnal out this week!
Alan Pasnyk 7:29:27 PM
... it was very appropriate on the FM from Doylestown...
Lizbot (host) 7:30:19 PM
@Christine - This is Rotary Connection from Chicago covering it. Minnie Riperton providing those incredible soaring vocals. This was a group of musicians affiliated at the time with Chess Records
Lizbot (host) 7:30:36 PM
@Alan - Glad to hear it!
Rob from Maryland 7:32:19 PM
That Rotary Connection cover sounded nothing like the Cream song (on a rather casual listen)
Lizbot (host) 7:32:34 PM
@Alan - There was much talk in the chat about the weather not being sufficiently autumnal for that theme last week, but the harvest moon was just around the corner!
Lizbot (host) 7:33:08 PM
@Rob - And that's a good thing. I prefer covers that do something really different from the original material
Andy Wing 7:33:30 PM
Still remember that the skip" in the track is part of the piece, lol.
Lizbot (host) 7:34:10 PM
@Rob - Every once in a while I get a kick out of a cover that's very close to the original, like when The Jam covered And Your Bird Can Sing, but in general, it's far more fun to have something that diverges greatly, like when The Residents cover James Brown or Hank Williams
Alan Pasnyk 7:34:24 PM
Musique = Lizbot in her Dark Mood! Here comes Halloween...
Lizbot (host) 7:34:25 PM
@Andy - YES! Locked groove!
Lizbot (host) 7:34:33 PM
there ya go
Lizbot (host) 7:35:04 PM
Cheer-Accident likes to play around with locked grooves like that too. and sometimes recreate them live!
Alan Pasnyk 7:35:47 PM
Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me!
Lizbot (host) 7:35:56 PM
@Alan - Ha!
Lizbot (host) 7:36:22 PM
@Alan - For real, I'm already thinking about DevilPlusGhoul. Killbot is lurking
Lizbot (host) 7:36:43 PM
When the sun sets early, but brain seeks darker music.
Alan Pasnyk 7:37:17 PM
@ Lizbot: Love it ! Devil PG!
Christine 🦊 7:38:03 PM
A glitch music track on Austin's show earlier today totally fooled me
Christine 🦊 7:38:41 PM
👹 ➕ 👻 is coming....
Lizbot (host) 7:38:44 PM
@Christine - I know that can bother some, but I personally love that trickery!
Alan Pasnyk 7:39:50 PM
Maybe it's all about the Waiting for it to stop, then continue, building suspense??
Lizbot (host) 7:40:05 PM
@Christine - YESSSS. Lemme know what you wanna hear! I wonder if I'll have 6 hours this time like the past few years...I don't know yet. We'll see. I always run outta time when I have 6 hours so 3 is really gonna be tight. I think I did 3 last year for DevilPlusGhoul...
Christine 🦊 7:40:55 PM
Today on Austin's show I learned there was a "glitch music" sub-genre. See? PRB is educational on a daily basis!
Lizbot (host) 7:44:54 PM
@Christine - Nice! I love some glitch! that genre co-inhabited the folktronic genre for a bit in the early to mid 2000s
Lizbot (host) 7:45:34 PM
@Christine - Flanafi with Ape School goes in a glitch direction at times, but is also so lo-fi and word soup-y,. I love it!
Lizbot (host) 7:47:25 PM
The great Philly jazz bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma was playing Esther Phillips at his house last week when my husband visited, so I had to play some Ester this week!
Lizbot (host) 7:51:49 PM
@ALan - Sorry I didn't fit in the Fripp bath station ID! I might still get it in after this song, but then the last track would run outta time! Keeping a tight air-schedule today!
Lizbot (host) 7:53:11 PM
BTW everyone, I will be at my kid's Back to School Night next week. I intend to still do a show, but next Thursday, but it will have to be prerecorded, so the chat might be off then, UNLESS I get bored at Back to School Night (likely) and chat clandestinely in the classroom
Lizbot (host) 7:54:50 PM
@Alan - I'll have to play it next week!
Christine 🦊 7:55:51 PM
Another 💎 of a show. Thank you, Lizbot 🤖! Great chatting with everyone!
Lizbot (host) 7:57:13 PM
Last song - Two years ago tonight at this very moment I was at the King Crimson 50th Anniversary show at The Met, and they performed Easy Money, and also Cat Food, two songs they don't usually play live anymore. So this is to commemorate that show, which also had Mr. Various and Mickey from The Sprawl in attendance
Alan Pasnyk 7:57:24 PM
@Lizbot: It'll be a surprise! Thanks for the fun time and tribute. Signing off the chat now, but will continue on the FM. Be seeing Y'all Take care!
Lizbot (host) 7:57:25 PM
Thanks, Christine! G'night!
Rob from Maryland 7:57:46 PM
Great show, Lizbot. It was nice hearing those Delta 5 songs (albeit for the sad reason). See you in a week or two!
Lizbot (host) 7:57:51 PM
Thanks, Alan! G'night! Thanks for hanging
Lizbot (host) 7:58:53 PM
Thanks, Rob! I'll be back next week, and I'll probably have the chat open, I'll just have to prerecord and not be live then due to Back to School Night, which my daughter's school ALWAYS put on a Thursday for some reason!
jimbeaux 7:59:00 PM
I shall be digging into Chrome Hoof forthwith...
Lizbot (host) 7:59:39 PM
@jimbeaux - Cuneiform rarely steers me wrong
