I used to have an 8 track deck up until the later 90s but it broke on me.

Those metal splitters used to let go and I'd end up breaking into the cartridge to fix them at the kitchen table.

Homer Quincy Smith (December 2, 1902, Florence, Alabama, USA) was founder and first tenor of The Southernaires. Formed in 1929, the Southernaires were a black gospel vocal quartet that found success via the radio, without making much of an impact in the area of phonograph record sales.

Hi there, SBW3... good morning chatroom peeps. I am enjoying the show. -- SBW3, a short bit ago you were writing about the "spooky cue". My guess would be it is a musical cue leftover from silent films and the organ accompanist days. (I am not old enough to first hand know this, though).

early in his life the recently deceased jazz historian Phil Schaap knew Rev. Davis as neighbors in Hollis Park, Queens

@ Vaughn Skywatcher Heintz Yep, "Garden Stater Stomp" is WONDERFUL! Using all those true New Jersey town names ... many of which were Leni Lenape/Delaware first Americans place names. Van Ronk said he got the ideas while changing a tire on the shoulder of a busy NJ highway, looked up and saw a mileage sign that had 3 or 4 of such marvelous names. And as he pronounced them to himself while working on the tire change, he realized they made a mini-poem! ;-))

I may have been wrong about Harlem.

I seen Dave Van Ronk play one time.

Was at Philadelphia Folk Fest in the 90s I think.

Rev. Davis may have been in Harlem later? But Phil knew him when he was growing up, so in the 1950s-60s? And I happened to note that Davis was born in Laurens, SC, about the same time and place as my grandmother.

Phil also personally knew a lot of famous jazz musicians who lived in Hollis back then.
