@ Christine: Last night I watched a Facebook interview that Derrick Pitts of The Franklin Institute had with the Project Engineer of the Webb, Very Interesting and Inspiring. It's been recorded on Facebook. You can use the TFI website to get to it...

The Webb will be launched to a very stable L2 point one million miles away. It is an Infrared Telescope that will look past where Hubble could see, to see Galaxies first Forming!!! WOW!!!!

@ Rob,Just today I got some film photos back that were shot last fall of a few common loons. I was very pleased to say the least.

In DC on Monday, it's overhead starting at 6:16 pm. Hopefully I'll remember

The Webb Infrared Telescope is soooo coool that it has to be cooled to almost absolute zero, around -450 degrees F !!

They tend to build their nest right near the waters edge cause their walking is not great at all.

That's interesting, CL, I wonder how that evolution occurred...they never had to go on land I guess...

five species are Red-throated Loon Gavia stellata, Pacific Loon Gavia pacifica, Arctic Loon Gavia arctica, Yellow-billed Loon Gavia adamsii, and Common Loon Gavia immer

Was unfamilair with the Arctic loon, photos looks very beautiful from quick search.

The "loon" that means "a crazy, foolish or silly person" comes from the Middle English "loun." Originally, this "loon," which entered English in the 1400s, meant "a lout, idler, rogue," and later this negative definition was extended to mean "a crazy person or simpleton."

I first saw loons when I was kid on vacation in Maine. I still have a little soapstone figurine on my shelf.

I love to hear the loons in Maine.

That's ccol, Addie. I think I would like to start a collection of water fowl carvings..I have no where to really display them though.

We have an amazing birds of Vermont museum nearby me and all the “specimens” are hand carved, mostly by one man!

I've seen Common Loons from my house, which is miles from any lake. The loons were migrating.

I also once heard the classing loon yodel coming from a high-flying loon, in DC, which was also migrating

Addie, I was unfamilar with that museum. I am certainly going to check it out come next spring when I make it back up north.
