Good morning and welcome to Sangeet.

In today's program, the Carnatic portions feature "Ragam-Tanam-Pallavi" (RTP).

It is one of the most complete aspects of Indian classical music, demonstrating the entire gamut of talents and the depth of knowledge of the musician.

And the Hindustani portions focus on Raga Bahar.

If you are new to Indian Classical Music, listening to different performances of the same raga is a good way to begin to recognize and distinguish the individual ragas.

Certain ragas have characteristic note sequences that make them easy to recognize.

These mixed ragas are a feature of Hindustani music, and are not often found in Carnatic music.

One way ragas can be blended is by using notes of one raga while ascending the scale, and the other while descending.

The technique is intricate, and it's not easy to do properly. Usually it's only attempted by the most skilled musicians.
