Thank you, Sonny Boy Williamson III! You're starting the new year off right 🎸🔥
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:39:04 AM
Odd that Clapton doesn't seem to be playing slide on his tribute to Elmore but if any guitarist can make fretted playing sound like slide it may be him.

Jumpin' mix of powerful tracks this morning, SBW 3rd. Solid! Just the thing to get us stoked for 2022. Wishing everyone a Happy -- and, especially, a Healthy -- New Year.
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:17:05 AM
Thanks Richard!

Wow! Alan Lomax hits gold again.
-ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ-💀 11:34:33 AM
I agree and concur with DJ DaveTheObscure!
Richard from Rocky Hill 11:43:44 AM
@ ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ & ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ Yes indeed! There have been a number of criticisms of Alan Lomax and his father John on issues of methodology, theories of music & the arts, relations with women & minorities. Some criticisms may have validity, some may not. But clearly ... if Alan Lomax hadn't recorded the prison work gang song and interview proceeding it that we just heard, would anyone else have done it? Or (more likely) would it have been lost forever?
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:45:44 AM
Good points all around Richard! I thought this interview was a good example of how the Lomaxes are often looking for certain types of answers, and you can hear the interview subjects try to figure out what they want to hear.
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:46:00 AM
As with the question about what makes a good work song leader
Richard from Rocky Hill 11:51:51 AM
@ Sonny Boy III (host) Yes, a good example of "the anthropologist effect": Is the researcher (and perhaps unconsciously) asking leading questions to get an answer that supports their personal theories? And/or is the informant being courteous with this guest and politely giving an answer that the guest wants to hear?
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:53:37 AM
With the added complication of a power differential between the white man with the microphone and the incarcerated black man in Mississippi, who called Lomax simply "boss"
Richard from Rocky Hill 11:54:29 AM
But I do think the interviewee gave honest and valuable answers about what makes a good work song leader -- especially the priority of knowing, feeling and transmitting the authentic timing & rhythms of the work song.
-ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ-💀 11:55:53 AM
Oh, more controversies!?! Through the lens of 2022?!? Say it ain’t so!!!
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:56:19 AM
I agree Richard -- once he figured out what Lomax meant. But it's clear that at first the question - at least as posed - was surprising to the interviewee, which shows at least that what seemed like an obvious question to Lomax wasn't as obvious to him!
-ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ-💀 11:57:12 AM
DJ Sonny Boy Williamson III, many thanks for another great show! Always luv the BLUES! Cheers and kind regards to you!
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:57:29 AM
Thank you Mr. Malcontent!
Tony Orlando & Mok 11:58:29 AM
👏
Richard from Rocky Hill 11:58:59 AM
@ Sonny Boy III (host) Oh my yes! An incarcerated black man at Parchman prison farm is not going to be anything but deferential to a visiting white scholar -- especially as there was likely one or more guards standing right there who would react very strongly to anything they might deem to be so-called "uppity" talk from the inmate.
Richard from Rocky Hill 11:59:42 AM
Thanks again for a marvelous start to your 2022 season.
Sonny Boy III (host) 12:00:27 PM
Thanks everyone!
